Where forbidden tales are told.

I pull my hand from the soaked, ruined lining of my bikini top. The manual titanium override key catches the harsh, sterile blue light of the server farm. I do not point it at Elias like a weapon; I hold it flat on my palm, an offering and a threat rolled into a few ounces of jagged metal.

"The deep-water submersible docked in the lower marine bay," I say, my voice steady, entirely stripped of the panicked tremor I had weaponized upstairs. "It runs on a closed-loop analog system. It isn’t connected to your syndicate’s monitors. I secured this key from the harbormaster’s safe three days ago. I could have swiped my way into the bay and dropped into the Marianas Trench while you were locking the blast doors."

Elias stares at the metal resting on my skin. The muscle in his jaw leaps. For the first time since the hurricane made landfall, the immaculate, terrifying calculus in his dark eyes fractures. He is calculating my trajectory and finding it entirely irrational.

"But you are here," he states, the words slow, heavy with a dangerous realization. "You had an unmonitored exit, and you followed me into a sealed vault."

"Because running doesn’t burn the syndicate to the ground. It just leaves them free to pull the plug on that hospital room," I reply, stepping directly into his personal space, closing the physical gap until the heat of his chest radiates against my shivering shoulders. "I am not a variable you need to manage, Elias. I am the only partner who can rewrite the board. But my alliance comes with a price. Turn on the purge pumps. Drain the transit stairwell."

    "They are already dead, Tamsin."

"No, they are drowning," I correct sharply, my finger tapping the heavy mechanical keyboard of the main console. "They are dirty capital, and right now, we need a smokescreen. If you let them die, the syndicate gets their money. If we save them and lock them in the secondary holding pens, we can bleed their biometric signatures to authorize a total drain of the Ouroboros relief funds into an account the cartel can’t track. Save them, or I take this key, walk to the sub, and leave you here to explain to the wolves why your servers are empty."

Elias looks at the titanium key, then at my face. He doesn’t see a victim. He sees a mirror. Without breaking eye contact, his hand moves to the console. He punches in a rapid fourteen-digit sequence and slams the execution key.

Deep within the bedrock walls, a massive, concussive thud reverberates, followed by the deafening roar of industrial turbines spinning up. On the secondary security monitor, the black, churning water filling the stairwell suddenly begins to vortex. The localized drainage valves have opened. Within ninety seconds, the water level plummets, revealing the battered, coughing forms of Marcus and Julian tangled in the steel grating. The pneumatic doors of the lower decontamination lock hiss open, dragging them inside before sealing shut with a definitive, airtight lock. They are alive. They are also entirely trapped behind six inches of reinforced glass.

I let out a breath I didn’t know I was holding. The silver mylar blanket slips from my shoulders, pooling on the steel floor. I am freezing, my skin pebbled with goosebumps beneath the neon pink synthetic fabric of my disguise.

"The honeypot is over," I murmur, reaching behind my neck and snapping the string of the bikini. I let it drop. I don’t care about modesty; there is no room for it in a tomb. I walk past Elias to the emergency supply cache built into the far wall, yanking out a black tactical turtleneck and a pair of canvas cargo pants. I pull them on, the heavy, dry fabric grounding me, turning me back into Tamsin Reyes, the investigator who thrives in the wreckage.

When I turn back, Elias has not moved. He is watching me with a gaze so intensely focused it feels like a physical touch. The glacial architect is gone. In the dim blue light, with his wet dress shirt clinging to his ribs and his dark hair falling across his forehead, he looks violently human.

"You orchestrated this," he says, his voice a low rumble that vibrates through the steel grating beneath my bare feet. "The clumsy escort act. The forced entry into my network. You wanted me to pull you into the dark."

"I wanted the mastermind," I correct, walking back to the center of the command pit. "I just didn’t expect the mastermind to be wearing a collar."

I reach out, my fingers brushing the damp fabric of his collar, trailing down the strong, rigid line of his neck. The air between us is suddenly devoid of oxygen. The storm raging above us—the Category 5 apocalypse tearing the island apart—pales in comparison to the electric, suffocating tension humming in the server room. I am standing in the epicenter of a multi-billion-dollar fraud, locked in a bunker with a mass murderer, and all I can feel is the gravitational pull of his desperation.

Elias’s hand snaps up, his fingers wrapping around my wrist. It isn’t a restraint; it is an anchor. His thumb presses into my pulse point, feeling the frantic, erratic beat of my heart.

"You have no idea what you have tethered yourself to, Tamsin," he breathes, stepping so close our thighs brush. The scent of ozone, cedar, and pure adrenaline is intoxicating. "If you stay, there is no rescue. There is only the lie we build together."

"I’ve never been interested in being rescued," I whisper, twisting my wrist out of his grip, only to slide both my hands up into his dark hair. I pull him down.

The collision of our mouths is not gentle. It is a violent, desperate exchange of power, a physical sealing of a lethal contract. He tastes like cold rain and ruin. Elias groans, a harsh, jagged sound, and his hands drop to my waist, hauling me flush against his hard, muscular frame. He backs me up against the humming edge of the server rack, his mouth trailing fire down my jaw, biting lightly at my collarbone. It is a total, devastating surrender of control from a man who has built his entire life around maintaining it. I drag my nails down his spine, a silent, vicious promise that I am right here in the dark with him, by my own choice, on my own terms.

His hand slides under the hem of my tactical shirt, his rough palm scorching the bare skin of my stomach, moving upward. The heat between us is absolute, blinding, entirely eclipsing the horrors waiting above ground.

Then, the primary console emits a piercing, high-frequency chime.

Elias freezes, his lips hovering an inch from my neck, his chest heaving against mine. We both turn our heads toward the array of monitors. The localized radar screen, entirely consumed by the massive red swirl of Ouroboros, is flashing with a brilliant, impossible white beacon.

UPLINK ESTABLISHED. EMERGENCY EXTRACTION VEHICLE INBOUND. ETA: 12 MINUTES.

We stare at the screen, the raw, heavy intimacy of the moment shattered by the glaring light of salvation. It is mathematically impossible for any rescue vessel to penetrate the eye wall of a Category 5 hurricane. But the signal is there, bright and undeniable, burning through the storm.
