Where forbidden tales are told.

The heat radiating from the burning cliff face is a physical weight, pressing against my spine as I stare down at the dark, churning water of the tidal pool. The automated submersible bobs violently in the surf, its titanium hatch popped open, exposing the sterile, illuminated cabin inside. It is a one-way ticket to absolute anonymity. It is everything I have clawed, lied, and bled for over the last three years.

I look back up the jagged rocks. The utility tunnel is vomiting thick, black smoke. Dorian stands directly in front of it, a monolithic shadow against the brilliant, apocalyptic orange of the kinetic strikes. He is completely unarmed. I can hear the guttural shouts of the cartel mercenaries breaching the treeline above him, the metallic clatter of fresh magazines being slammed into automatic rifles.

He is going to die. He is going to let them tear him apart, simply because his twisted, pathological contract dictates that my freedom requires his absolute absence.

My breath hitches, the salt spray stinging my raw throat. Three years of running, of fracturing my identity into a dozen different masks, all driven by the terror of being consumed. But as I stare at the open hatch of the sub, a horrifying clarity pierces through the panic. If I get into that metal tube alone, if I leave the architect of my cage to burn on this rock, I am not stepping into freedom. I am just stepping into a colder, emptier cage. I will spend the rest of my life looking over my shoulder, not for a hunter, but for a ghost I chose not to save.

I don’t climb down to the water. I pivot, my bare feet slipping on the slick coral, and lunge toward the emergency supply cache bolted to the rock wall near the path’s entrance.

I rip the plastic seal off a marine flare gun. It is heavy, bright orange, and loaded with a single, high-intensity phosphorus shell. I don’t hesitate. I sprint back up the treacherous, crumbling incline, the blistering heat of the burning jungle searing my skin.

Dorian is backing up, slowly drawing a combat knife from his boot as three cartel enforcers emerge from the smoke, their rifles raised.

"Dorian!" I scream, the sound tearing my vocal cords.

He flinches, his head snapping toward me, his dark eyes widening in absolute, paralyzing shock. For the first time since I met him, the immaculate, calculating bounty hunter completely loses his composure. He looks at me like I am a hallucination.

I don’t give the mercenaries time to adjust their aim. I raise the flare gun, point it directly at the canopy of dry, dead palm fronds dangling just above their position, and pull the trigger.

The phosphorus shell explodes in a blinding arc of white-hot fire. The canopy instantly ignites, raining a torrential downpour of burning ash and flaming debris directly onto the enforcers. They scream, dropping their weapons to shield their faces.

I don’t stop running. I crash into Dorian, grabbing the collar of his ruined shirt, the momentum nearly sending us both tumbling off the ledge.

"I did not give you permission to die!" I snarl, my fingers twisting violently into the fabric. "Move!"

I don’t wait for his brain to catch up to the sheer insanity of my choice. I drag him down the jagged path. The air above us is shredded by blind, panicked gunfire, bullets sparking against the wet rocks. We hit the edge of the tidal pool, the dark water surging around our calves. I shove him toward the open hatch of the submersible, scrambling in right behind him.

The moment we clear the rim, I hit the emergency seal override. The heavy titanium hatch slams shut, locking into place with a definitive, hydraulic hiss. The deafening roar of the burning island is instantly severed, replaced by the low, steady thrum of the sub’s electric turbines.

I slam my palm against the dive console. The sub violently pitches forward, plunging beneath the surface in a stomach-dropping descent. The heavy G-force presses me back against the bulkhead. Through the reinforced glass viewport, the fiery glow of Cayo Gata rapidly fades into the crushing, icy blackness of the Caribbean trench. We slip entirely under the electromagnetic floor of the orbital geofence, descending into absolute silence.

The cabin is painfully small, illuminated only by the soft blue glow of the instrument panels. The air is thick with the smell of sweat, ozone, and smoke.

I slide down the metal wall, my chest heaving, the adrenaline crash hitting me so hard my vision spots. I pull the small, metallic master drive of the relief funds from my bra, tossing it onto the console. The green light pulses steadily, confirming the sixth deed protocol is actively dispersing the funds into five thousand separate wallets. The ghost is scattered. The hunt is dead.

Dorian is sitting across from me, his long legs cramped in the narrow space. He is staring at me. The absolute, suffocating intensity of his gaze is back, but the architecture of it has fundamentally changed. The cold, calculating possessiveness is gone, replaced by a raw, devastating awe.

He reaches out, his hand trembling—a microscopic tremor that speaks volumes. He doesn’t grab my waist. He doesn’t pin me down. He gently brushes a strand of salt-crusted hair away from my cheek.

"You came back," he whispers, his voice thick, rough, tearing through the quiet hum of the cabin. It isn’t a question. It is the vocalization of a shattered worldview. The man whose entire existence was defined by the terror of losing a trace just realized that the only way to keep me was to leave the door wide open.

"I came back for Penelope," I correct him, leaning my face into his palm, finally allowing the sheer, physical weight of his touch to ground me. "Trixie would have taken the boat. Lena would have shot you. But I draw the lines now. You built the cage, Dorian. But I hold the master key."

His jaw clenches, the muscle ticking violently under his skin. He leans forward, closing the cramped distance between us, his forehead resting against mine. "Whatever you want. Wherever you go."

"We are going to Paris," I tell him, my mind already spinning the intricate threads of a new web, the Ne-dominant chaos finally finding a stable anchor. "There is a hedge fund manager in the eighth arrondissement who made a fortune shorting pharmaceutical stocks during a crisis. He thinks his digital fortress is impenetrable."

Dorian lets out a low, dark chuckle that vibrates straight into my chest. His thumb traces the curve of my lower lip. The predator hasn’t changed his nature; he has just accepted a new handler. "And what is my role in this acquisition?"

"You are the failsafe," I whisper, closing my eyes as his lips brush against mine, a promise of violence and absolute devotion. "You watch the exits. You track the variables. You play the obsessive shadow." I open my eyes, meeting the dark, endless void of his gaze with a feral, uncompromising light of my own. "But if I say we run, we run. If I drop the mask, the game stops. You only get to chase me if I am the one leading the hunt."

The sub descends deeper into the dark, carrying us away from the burning wreckage of the past. The fear of being consumed is finally dead, replaced by the terrifying, exhilarating thrill of mutual destruction. He bought the island, he built the trap, but as his mouth crushes against mine in the cramped, freezing depths of the ocean, we both know exactly who owns the game.
