Where forbidden tales are told.

The abyssal heartbeat echoing from the aurora egg perfectly synchronizes with the leviathan thrashing in the suspended ocean above us.

I do not drop the command scale. The jagged iron star burns in my palm, pulsing with the suppressed kinetic fire of Eirik’s lindworm blood. If the leviathan breaks the firmament, we are dead. If the egg detonates, we are dead. The math is brutal, cold, and entirely linear. The kinetic light trapped in the shell must be filtered through Eirik’s iron scales to rebuild the sky, but without a carved memory to anchor it, the raw magic will incinerate his nervous system.

Unless the anchor is living. Unless the circuit is me.

"Take off your armor," I tell him.

The command rings hollow in the massive, freezing cavern, but the authority in it is absolute. I hold his leash. Eirik stares at the glowing egg on the ice, then up at the dark vortex of the ocean. He does not argue. He reaches for the heavy buckles at his shoulders.

The thick, scarred mammoth-leather hits the frost with a dull thud.

He stands bare-chested in the dead zone. Patches of dark iron scales map his collarbones, his ribs, the heavy muscles of his abdomen. The raw, smooth void over his heart—where he ripped out the memory of Skaal to build our last bridge—is an ugly, gaping vulnerability. He is a predator who has ruled the skies for a decade, capable of snapping longships in half.

He drops to his knees on the jagged bedrock.

He makes himself lower than me. He places his massive hands flat on his thighs, exposing his throat, his chest, the ruined geography of his sacrifices. He surrenders the physical space completely, waiting for my stylus.

I kneel between his parted thighs. The ambient cold rolling off his iron scales bites through my trousers. I uncap the obsidian ink-vial. I dip the carving stylus.

"The old law took your memories to give you flashes of sensation," I say, my voice dropping to a low murmur. I press the cold metal tip of the stylus against the bare patch of iron over his heart. "This is a consent circuit. It doesn’t take. It reflects. You will only feel what I allow you to feel. You will only feel me."

    "Carve it," he rasps.

I press down. The ink bites into the iron.

I drag the stylus in a sharp, leftward slant, cutting the first line of a binding rune. The second the ink settles, the command scale in my left hand flares with blinding heat. The tether snaps into place.

Eirik’s spine arches violently. A raw, guttural sound tears out of his throat.

The iron scale beneath my stylus doesn’t just warm. It ignites with the exact temperature of my own fingertips. Ten years of absolute numbness shatters in a fraction of a second. His pale eyes snap wide open, blown and wild with the sudden, agonizing shock of tactile input.

He looks down at my hand resting on his chest. He can feel the pressure of my palm. He can feel the frantic, hammering rhythm of my pulse transferring directly into his iron.

    "Sigrid," he chokes out.

The green light of the aurora egg surges, feeding off the closed circuit. The gravity in the cavern wavers, snaps, and dissolves.

The heavy leather satchel floats upward. My boots lose contact with the ice. We drift, completely weightless, anchored only by the point where my hand presses into his chest.

Eirik’s hands come up. He grips my hips, pulling me flush against him in the zero-gravity void. His touch is desperate, bruising, starving. Through the tether, the sensation echoes back into me—I feel the crushing awe in his mind, the terrifying, overwhelming relief of simply being touched without destroying the thing he is touching.

My own breath catches. I drop the stylus. It drifts away into the mist.

I fist my hands in his silver-blonde hair and pull his mouth to mine.

The kiss is a collision. He tastes like ozone and deep-sea frost, but the heat flooding through the tether is entirely human. We strip away the remaining barriers in a frantic, weightless tangle of limbs and discarded cloth. Without gravity, leverage is entirely dependent on friction. He wraps his heavy arms around my back, crushing me against his iron-scaled chest, finding his anchor in the hollow of my throat.

When he enters me, the tether overloads.

I don’t just feel the physical slide of him, the heavy, desperate friction of his hips driving upward. I feel his sensation of it. The circuit feeds my pleasure back into his nervous system, amplifying it, bouncing it between us in a blinding loop. The iron scales grinding against my bare skin are no longer cold metal—they are entirely alive, searing with the friction of our bodies. He buries his face in my neck, groaning, his control completely fracturing. Every thrust pulls the kinetic energy from the floating aurora egg, channeling the apocalypse through the rhythm of our sweat, our breath, the violent, claiming grip of his hands on my thighs.

We ride the edge of the world coming apart, suspended in the emerald light, burning the cataclysm down to the exact shape of each other.

The climax hits with the force of a collapsing star.

My vision whites out. Eirik’s roar vibrates through my sternum, a sound of absolute, shattering release. The green light of the egg pulses outward, shooting up into the oceanic ceiling, knitting the fractured firmament back together with thick, glowing bands of rune-light.

We drift slowly back down, gravity reasserting itself as the magic settles.

My back hits the cold ice of the bedrock. Eirik’s heavy, sweat-slicked weight settles over me, his face still buried in the curve of my shoulder. His breath comes in ragged, uneven tears.

But as the physical rush drains away, the tether remains open.

A shadow bleeds across the bond. It is sharp, sudden, and acrid. The phantom smell of burning pine. The sound of three hundred wooden hulls splintering in the dark water. Eirik stiffens above me. The survivor’s guilt, buried so deep beneath his iron, flinches violently away from the warmth of the intimacy. He tries to shut it down, retreating into the cold logic of a warlord who does not deserve to feel pleasure.

I run my hand down his spine, trying to ground him.

He pushes up on his forearms, creating a small space between us. His chest heaves. He looks down at the center of his collarbone, where the fresh ink of the consent rune glows faintly against the dark iron.

He reaches up. His large, trembling finger traces the shape of the rune.

He traces the sharp, leftward slant. The slight, imperfect curve of the binding line. The exact, unmistakable signature of the handwriting.

The tether between us goes dead silent.

Eirik’s eyes lift slowly from the scar on his chest to my face. The absolute, terrifying lack of heat radiates from him once more, severing the warmth of the aftershock. He recognizes the stroke of the chisel.

    "You," he whispers.
