Where forbidden tales are told.

The neighboring peaks answer through their roots.

For centuries they competed to reach heaven, each fed by bodies and false promises. Now the anchors make a horizontal network. When the Eater bites one mountain, six others pull it away. Valleys become strong because no summit stands alone.

The heart leaves my ribs and enters the network. I keep scars shaped like a map across my chest, but I remain human.

Aro uses the last of his storm-blood to lower our peak. Villages once separated by lethal altitude meet along new ridges. The sky monastery descends below the cloud line and loses its claim to divine isolation.

The Eater attacks once more. Instead of feeding it a city, the network opens an empty gorge and lets the creature bite stone threaded with poisoned lightning from Aethelgard’s old engines. It retreats beneath the world, wounded and no longer worshiped as inevitable.

Afterward, every staircase built for sacrifice becomes a rescue route running both upward and down. Altitude stations hold communal oxygen. No ruler may control a breath tether. Promises are written with expiration dates so a mountain cannot feed forever on an oath nobody remembers making.

Aro declines the storm throne. Without wings, he walks the routes he once surveyed from above. I establish a courier service whose letters are never sealed against the person carrying them. Clients hate the policy until it prevents the next war.

Our first delivery together is a blank page from the valley to the former sky monastery. The sender wants the recipients to decide what future belongs on it.

At a high pass, Aro renews our oxygen link by asking rather than commanding. The shared rhythm steadies us in the thin air.

“Are we a team now?” he asks.

The atmosphere waits to judge my answer.

“For the next mile,” I say. “Ask again at the marker.”

No snow rises from the promise. It is small enough to be true.

We walk between peaks that have stopped measuring worth by height. Below us, the new stairways carry medicine, arguments, children, and open letters in both directions.

The mountain does not climb at dawn.

It remains—rooted not in a sacrificed body, but in every hand that chose to hold the line.
