    — The Penthouse Has No Blind Spot

    MARA

The ringing in my ears sounds like the high-pitched whine of a slot machine paying out a jackpot, relentless and synthetic.

I peel my cheek off the floor. It isn’t the oil-stained concrete of the Halcyon Crown’s VIP parking garage anymore. The surface beneath me is absolute, seamless marble, radiating a controlled, artificial warmth. My lungs burn as I drag in a breath, tasting ozone, sterile air conditioning, and the faint, coppery tang of fresh blood.

Ground yourself, the negotiator training whispers in the back of my mind. Identify three physical anchors. Establish the baseline.

One: the marble under my palms. Two: the heavy, suffocating silence of a room engineered to keep the world out. Three: the memory of my windshield exploding into a thousand glittering diamonds of safety glass.

I push myself up onto my knees, my pencil skirt twisting uncomfortably around my thighs. Adrenaline is a liar. It masks pain, paints the world in hyper-focused vignettes, and makes you believe you are safe when you are simply in the eye of the hurricane. I quickly run my hands over my ribs, my arms, my throat. No bullet holes. No active bleeding. I am physically intact.

The last seventeen minutes are a fractured montage. Walking to my Honda Civic after a grueling fourteen-hour mediation session with the dealers’ union. The sudden, unnatural dimming of the garage lights. The hollow pop-pop-pop of a suppressed weapon echoing off the concrete pillars. And then, a massive, unyielding physical force slamming into me, dragging me behind the reinforced concrete of a support beam just as a bullet tore through the space where my chest had been a fraction of a second before.

I scan my new environment. It is a penthouse, but not one designed for hospitality. The architecture is brutalist luxury—vast expanses of slate, brushed steel, and floor-to-ceiling glass offering a panoramic, dizzying view of the Las Vegas Strip. The neon glow of the desert city bleeds into the room, painting the sharp angles of the furniture in toxic shades of magenta and electric blue.

But there is no art on the walls. No personal artifacts. The space feels less like a home and more like a high-altitude observation deck. A cage suspended in the sky.

    "Stay exactly where you are."

The voice is a low, chest-deep rumble that resonates in the cavernous space. It belongs to the man who pulled me from the line of fire. I snap my head toward the foyer, my hypervigilance spiking as my eyes lock onto him.

    ROMAN

The scent of her fear is distinct—citrus from her perfume cut with the sharp, acidic spike of cold sweat.

I ignore the burning sensation in my left shoulder where a ricochet tore through my tactical jacket and grazed the muscle. It’s a superficial flesh wound. Irrelevant. My focus is entirely on the environmental controls embedded in the steel panel by the reinforced front door.

I press my thumb against the biometric scanner. The system chimes, a low, affirmative note.

“Lockdown protocol initiated,” the automated voice murmurs.

I watch the sequence cascade through the penthouse. The heavy steel deadbolts engage with a synchronized, final-sounding clack. Above us, the ventilation grilles seal themselves behind secondary blast dampers. And then, the floor-to-ceiling electrochromic glass surrounding the entire perimeter of the penthouse reacts.

The glittering, chaotic expanse of the Las Vegas Strip vanishes, replaced by a solid, impenetrable wall of opaque white frost. The neon bleeds away. The room is instantly plunged into a stark, clinical brightness, illuminated by recessed LED strips that cast no shadows.

I control the sightlines. I control the air. I control the access. No one gets in.

I turn to look at Mara. She is on her knees in the center of the living area, her posture rigid. She isn’t crying. She isn’t screaming. Her eyes are darting rapidly, taking in the dimensions of the room, the locked door, the frosted glass. She is mapping the exits. She is a crisis negotiator; her brain is wired to deconstruct threats and find leverage.

I track her heart rate by the rapid pulse fluttering at the hollow of her throat. It’s elevated, but she is forcing her breathing to slow down. Count of four in, count of four out. It’s a textbook grounding technique. She is spectacular to watch.

For nine months, I have monitored her through screens, through encrypted audio feeds, through the sterile distance of the Halcyon Crown’s surveillance network. But seeing her here, breathing my air, displacing the space in my sanctuary, is a heavy, kinetic impact that hits me square in the chest.

She is bleeding from a small scrape on her cheekbone where the pavement caught her. The sight of it makes my jaw clench. The casino’s wet-work team was sloppy. They shouldn’t have gotten that close.

I step away from the door and move into the main living space. I don’t walk like a man in a panic. I move with deliberate, heavy steps, letting the sound of my boots on the marble announce my presence, letting my physical size command the gravity of the room. I need her to understand exactly where the power lies, not to frighten her, but to establish absolute order in the chaos.

"The immediate perimeter is secure," I say, my voice steady. "The elevator is locked down. The service corridors are dead. You are safe."

    MARA

    Safe.

The word sounds like a threat rolling off his tongue.

I slowly push myself to my feet, brushing off my skirt, forcing myself to stand at my full height. I will not negotiate from my knees. I look at the man who brought me here.

He is tall, aggressively built, moving with the terrifying, coiled grace of a predator that doesn’t need to rush because it already owns the territory. He’s dressed in dark, tactical clothing that belongs in a war zone, not a casino boardroom. There is blood on his shoulder, soaking into the black fabric, but he moves as if it isn’t even there. His eyes are sharp, analytical, tracking my every micro-expression with a predatory intensity that makes my skin crawl.

"Who are you?" I demand, keeping my voice level, stripping the tremor out of it through sheer willpower.

    "Roman Bell," he says simply.
