    Rook

The silence in the iron-walled quarters is a physical weight, pressing down on my lungs until I can barely draw a breath.

Mara stands by the door, her hand resting against the cold steel bulkhead. She hasn’t run. She hasn’t called the military police to drag the Republic’s favorite battery out into the canyon to hang. But the sheer, devastating clarity in her eyes as she looks at the pulsing violet scars on my chest is a condemnation worse than any court-martial.

I look down at my own hands. My leather gloves are stained with the white bone-dust of the canyon and the dark grease of the wyvern’s command yoke. For three years, I have told myself I was a victim of the commandant’s necromancers. I told myself I didn’t hold the knife that cut the tethers to my wingmen. But sitting here, under the blinding, uncompromising light of Mara’s judgment, the self-pity burns away, leaving only a cold, sickening truth.

I have worn their deaths as a shield. I let the contract keep me breathing because I was too much of a coward to accept the fatal crash.

I reach down to the tactical sheath strapped to my thigh and draw my combat knife. The carbon-steel blade whispers against the hardened leather.

Mara stiffens, her hand dropping to her sidearm. "What are you doing?"

I reverse my grip on the handle, pressing the cold, razor-sharp tip directly against the center of my sternum, right where the thickest cluster of violet, necrotic scars converges over my heart. The biometric seal of the contract is buried deep in the muscle tissue here, anchored to my spine.

"I am the lock," I say, my voice steady, stripped of the gravelly armor I use to terrify the junior cadets. "If my vitals drop, the contract pulls from the squad. But if I carve the physical anchor out of my own chest, the tethers snap. The necromancy unravels."

I press the blade in. A bead of dark red blood wells up around the steel, stark against the sickly violet glow of the scars.

"Stop!" Mara crosses the room in two strides.

Her hand clamps around my wrist, her grip bruising, desperate. The sheer physical heat of her touch sends a violent jolt up my arm, jarring my intent.

"Let go, Sol," I grit out, my jaw tight. "It’s the only way to break the engine’s feed. If I don’t sever it, the next time I fly, it will kill whoever they assign to my wing."

"If you carve into your sternum with a combat knife, you will puncture your own aorta and bleed to death in three minutes," she snaps, her dark eyes blazing with a fierce, uncompromising fire. "And if you die, Ashwake loses its anchor, the military maintains control of the canyon, and my ancestors stay buried in this slaughterhouse forever. You don’t get to take the easy way out, Calder. You don’t get to just die and leave the debt unpaid."

"Then what do you want from me?" I demand, my control finally fracturing. "I am a walking bomb built of stolen time!"

"I want you to aim the bomb," she says, her voice dropping to a low, lethal whisper.

She pulls my hand away from my chest, forcing me to lower the knife, but she doesn’t release my wrist. She traces the edge of the violet scar with her thumb, her touch no longer recoiling, but calculating.

"The commandant didn’t just build this contract for you," she says, her mind racing, piecing the tactical puzzle together faster than a Republic supercomputer. "You said it yourself. You are a prototype for handling the necrotic backlash of the sun artillery. If we expose your contract alongside the bone ledgers from the Anatomy Archive, we have proof of the war crimes. We can show the sovereign nations what Red Meridian is actually building."

I stare at her, the sheer audacity of her plan cutting through my despair. "The archive is locked down. The military police sealed it after the canyon collapsed."

"They sealed the main doors," Mara says, a sharp, dangerous smile curving her lips. "But you said you knew every blind spot in this college. Are you going to sit here and bleed for five ghosts, Rook, or are you going to help me burn this empire down?"

    Mara

The service corridors beneath the Anvil are narrow, suffocating, and reek of stagnant water and rust.

I follow closely behind Rook, my boots making no sound on the metal grating. He moves through the subterranean darkness with a terrifying, fluid grace, a predator perfectly adapted to the Republic’s darkest corners. He has pulled his black canvas flight shirt back on, hiding the violet scars, but the heavy tactical vest and combat harness stay behind. We need speed, not armor.

"The MPs set up kinetic wards on the lower stairwells," Rook whispers, halting suddenly and pressing his back against the damp concrete wall.

I peek around his shoulder. At the end of the corridor, a faint, pulsing red laser grid blocks the entrance to the ventilation shaft that drops into the Anatomy Archive.

"Can you bypass it?" I ask softly, my shoulder brushing his arm.

"Usually, I’d throw a bone-construct at it to absorb the lethal shock," he replies, his eyes narrowing as he studies the grid. "But any necrotic magic will trigger the base alarms. We have to short it out manually."

He doesn’t hesitate. He draws his combat knife again, slicing a clean, deep line across the palm of his left hand.

I wince, instinctively reaching for him, but he shakes his head. He steps up to the control box mounted on the wall. The Republic’s kinetic wards run on synthetic marrow, which reacts violently to living blood. Rook forces his bleeding hand directly into the exposed circuitry of the box.

A sharp, crackling hiss echoes in the corridor. Rook’s jaw locks, the muscles in his neck cording with agonizing tension as the electrical current tears through his arm, but he holds his hand steady. He isn’t using his death-rider magic. He isn’t pulling from his tethers. He is taking the pain, raw and unmitigated, paying for the breach with his own physical body.

The red laser grid sputters, flickers, and dies.

Rook rips his hand back, exhaling a ragged breath. His palm is severely burned, the edges of the cut blackened, but he doesn’t pause to bandage it. He just gives me a sharp nod and slides into the narrow ventilation shaft.

    I follow him down.

The drop lands us directly in the center of the Anatomy Archive. The emergency chemical lights cast a sickly green pallor over the glass cabinets. The iron reading table is still in the center of the room, exactly where we left it. My breath catches in my throat as I look at the edge of the table, the memory of his hands on my skin, the searing heat of his mouth, crashing back into me.

Rook doesn’t look at the table. He is entirely focused on the floor.

The bone ledgers—the evidence of my people’s genocide and the blueprint for the sun artillery—are exactly where he swept them aside hours ago. The MPs must have focused their sweep on the collapsed walls, missing the scattered scrolls in the dark.

I drop to my knees, frantically gathering the thin, delicate shavings of bone. My fingers tingle as they brush the ancient glyphs, the dormant echoes of my ancestors whispering against my skin.

"Got them," I say, sliding the ledgers into a waterproof canvas tube I pulled from Rook’s gear.

"We need to move," Rook says, his head snapping toward the heavy steel doors at the far end of the archive.

A low, mechanical hum begins to vibrate through the obsidian floor. The kinetic ward didn’t trigger the alarm, but the sudden absence of current must have alerted a patrol. Heavy, synchronized footsteps echo in the hallway outside.

"Up," Rook commands, grabbing my arm and hauling me toward a massive, fossilized rib that curves toward the ceiling. "Climb. We take the marrow-chasm up to the old sniper nests."

I sling the canvas tube across my back and scramble up the petrified bone, my fingers finding the porous handholds with desperate speed. Rook is right behind me, his burned hand slowing him down, but his sheer strength forces him upward.

We reach the jagged fissure in the cavern roof just as the steel doors of the archive blow inward in a shower of sparks and smoke.

    Rook

The sniper nest is a hollowed-out alcove high in the canyon wall, invisible from the ground and exposed only to the vast, star-choked sky of the desert.

I pull myself over the ledge, collapsing onto the dusty stone floor. My lungs burn, and the muscles in my burned hand are spasming violently. Mara hauls herself up behind me, instantly scrambling to her feet to check the perimeter, her sidearm drawn.

"We’re clear," she breathes, holstering the weapon and turning toward me.

She drops the canvas tube containing the ledgers and falls to her knees beside me. She grabs my left hand, her fingers remarkably gentle as she examines the blackened, bleeding burn across my palm.

"You didn’t use the tethers," she says quietly, her dark eyes lifting to meet mine in the shadows.

"I told you," I rasp, leaning my head back against the cold stone of the alcove. "I’m done being a battery."

She reaches into one of her tactical pockets, pulling out a small roll of field bandages and a tin of burn salve. She works quickly, her movements precise and efficient, coating the wound in the numbing gel before wrapping it tight. The physical relief is immediate, but it is nothing compared to the profound, terrifying heat of her presence.

When she finishes tying off the bandage, she doesn’t let go of my hand.

I look at her, the wind whipping her dark hair across her cheek. The sheer, overwhelming reality of what we just did settles over me. We just stole the Republic’s darkest secret. There is no going back to the barracks. There is no finishing the trials. We are outlaws, traitors, entirely alone in the highest reaches of the canyon.

"Mara," I say, my voice thick. "I need you to witness something. As a bone-speaker."

She goes completely still, her eyes widening slightly as she senses the shift in the air. "Rook…"

I reach up with my uninjured hand, gripping the torn collar of my black shirt, and pull it off over my head, tossing it aside. The high desert moonlight hits the violent, violet scars branching across my chest. They are pulsing rapidly, agitated by the physical exertion of the climb, trying to desperately draw power from wingmen who are miles away.

"A bone-speaker can bind an oath to the dead," I say, my eyes locked on hers, completely bare, completely vulnerable. "I know the laws, Sol. An oath of restitution, sworn in blood and witnessed by a speaker, carries absolute magical weight."

"If you swear to return stolen years, the magic will strip the failsafe from your spine," she whispers, her voice trembling. "You will lose the Republic’s engine. If you sustain a fatal injury now, you will just die, Rook. Like a normal man."

"I have been dead for three years," I reply, leaning forward. "I want to live. But I will only do it on my own terms. Witness me."

Mara swallows hard, the fierce, analytical wall she keeps up finally crumbling, revealing the deep, profound empathy beneath. She reaches out, placing her bare hands flat against my chest, her palms covering the center of the violet brand.

"I witness you," she says, her voice ringing with ancient, undeniable authority.

I close my eyes, calling to mind the faces of the five cadets whose names are burned into my flesh. Miller. Vance. Torres. Chen. Hayes.

"I, Rook Calder, acknowledge the years stolen," I say, the words scraping out of my throat like shattered glass. "I revoke the contract. I sever the tethers. Whatever time was taken, I return to the marrow-chasms. I claim only my own life."

The moment the words leave my lips, a searing, blinding agony rips through my chest.

I throw my head back, a raw shout tearing from my throat. It feels as if a heavy, iron hook buried deep in my spine is suddenly, violently wrenched free. The violet light beneath my skin flares bright enough to illuminate the entire alcove, and then, with a sound like snapping cables, it shatters.

The sickening, unnatural hum in my veins dies completely.

I collapse forward, gasping for air, my forehead resting heavily against Mara’s shoulder. She catches my weight, her arms wrapping fiercely around my torso.

I look down at my chest. The scars are still there, deep and jagged, but the violet necrosis is gone. They are just pale, silvered tissue. Normal scars. Normal flesh.

"You did it," Mara whispers, her hands sliding up my back, her fingers tangling in my hair. She presses her lips against the side of my neck, her breath hot against my skin. "They’re gone. It’s just you now."

    Mara

The heavy, oppressive weight of the stolen lives that clung to him is completely vanished. Beneath my hands, his skin is scorching hot, his muscles trembling not with necrotic backlash, but with pure, absolute exhaustion and the sudden, terrifying reality of being mortal.

I pull back just enough to look at his face.

His gray eyes are blown wide, vulnerable, and completely fixated on me. The hardened, untouchable death-rider is gone. Here in the moonlight, stripped of his armor and his cursed magic, he is just a man who has finally laid down his sword.

A fierce, overwhelming wave of possessiveness and profound need crashes over me.

"Just me," he whispers, his gaze dropping to my mouth.

"That is all I ever wanted," I reply fiercely.

I don’t wait for him to move. I push him backward until his shoulders hit the smooth stone of the alcove wall. I straddle his hips, my knees bracketing his thighs. He lets out a ragged groan, his large hands immediately finding my waist, gripping me with a desperate, crushing strength.

I lean down and capture his mouth.

The kiss is completely different from the explosive, adrenaline-fueled collision in the observatory. This is deep, slow, and consuming. It is a worshipful, deliberate taking. His tongue sweeps into my mouth, tasting of salt and copper, claiming me with a thoroughness that makes my head spin. I melt against him, my hands mapping the broad expanse of his shoulders, tracing the heavy, silver scars that no longer pulse with stolen magic, but only with the frantic, heavy beat of his own heart.

He pulls away just enough to breathe, his forehead resting against mine.

"I need to touch you," he rasps, his hands moving to the hem of my military undershirt.

I sit back on my heels, raising my arms to let him pull the shirt over my head. He tosses it aside, his eyes completely darkening as he takes in my bare torso in the moonlight. I reach down and unfasten the heavy buckle of my tactical belt, pushing my pants and underwear down my legs in one fluid motion, kicking them away.

I am entirely naked before him, kneeling over his hips. The desert wind is cool against my skin, but the heat radiating from his body is a furnace.

Rook’s hands are shaking as he reaches out. He traces the curve of my waist, his rough palms sliding upward to cup my breasts. He strokes the sensitive peaks with his thumbs, watching my face as I bite my lip to stifle a moan.

"You are so beautiful," he murmurs, his voice thick with reverence. "I don’t deserve this. I don’t deserve you."

"Shut up," I whisper, leaning down to press a series of soft, lingering kisses along his jawline, down the corded muscle of his neck, and settling directly over the silver starburst of scars over his heart. I flick my tongue against the skin there, feeling the steady, rhythmic thud of his pulse. "You are exactly where you belong."

My hands move to the buckle of his tactical pants. He shifts his hips, helping me drag the heavy fabric down. He is already hard, a thick, heavy length of heated flesh that springs free the moment the constraint is gone.

I don’t hesitate. I grip his thick shaft, my thumb smearing a drop of pre-cum over the blunt tip. Rook’s breath hitches violently, his head falling back against the stone wall, the cords in his neck standing out in sharp relief.

"Mara," he warns, his hips arching involuntarily off the ground into my hand.

I smile against his skin. I straddle him completely, aligning myself over him. I can feel the slick, pulsing heat of my own arousal weeping down my thighs, desperate for the friction.

I sink down slowly, taking him inside me inch by agonizing inch.

The stretch is incredible, a deep, heavy fullness that makes my internal muscles quiver. Rook’s hands fly to my hips, gripping me tight, locking me in place as I take the last, breathtaking inch, seating him completely against my cervix.

We both freeze, gasping for air, the profound intimacy of the connection overwhelming the senses.

"Look at me," I command softly.

He opens his eyes, pinning me with a gaze so intensely devoted it steals the breath from my lungs.

I begin to move. I rise up on my knees, pulling almost entirely off of him before sinking back down with a wet, heavy slide. Rook lets out a low, guttural noise, his hands sliding from my hips to grip my thighs, his thumbs pressing into the soft flesh. I set the pace, slow and agonizingly deep, rolling my hips at the base of every thrust to maximize the friction against my clit.

The pleasure builds in thick, heavy waves. Without the terrifying resonance of the waking dragon or the violent adrenaline of a fight, every sensation is magnified, localized entirely on the physical reality of our bodies.

Rook can’t hold back. He lifts his hips, meeting my downward thrusts with powerful, driving upward surges. The slap of our skin echoes in the quiet alcove. He reaches between our bodies, his thumb finding my slick, swollen center, pressing down precisely as he drives upward inside me.

The combination of the deep internal stretch and the sharp, direct friction shatters my control.

I throw my head back, my nails digging into the scarred muscle of his chest as a blinding, cascading climax rips through me. I cry out his name, my internal muscles clamping down mercilessly around his cock, milking him with every spasm.

Rook arches off the stone, a raw, primal shout tearing from his chest. He drives into me one final, devastating time, holding himself deep inside me as his own climax hits, his body trembling violently beneath mine.

I collapse forward onto his chest, completely spent, my face buried in the crook of his neck. His arms wrap around me, holding me flush against him, our heartbeats slowly synchronizing in the quiet aftermath.

We stay like that for a long time, the cold desert wind howling outside the alcove, entirely separate from the warmth we have built in the dark. We have the ledgers. We broke the contract. For the first time, I allow myself to believe we might actually win.

Then, the floor beneath us begins to vibrate.

It isn’t the slow, tectonic shifting of Ashwake in the bedrock. This is a high-pitched, mechanical whine that sets my teeth on edge.

Rook goes rigid beneath me, his head snapping up.

A horrific, blinding beam of concentrated, synthetic sunlight erupts from the central tower of the Red Meridian campus, piercing straight up into the night sky. The sheer intensity of the light turns the entire canyon into a sterile, terrifying noon.

Simultaneously, the base klaxons begin to wail, but it isn’t the standard lockdown alarm. It is a complex, descending scale of three discordant notes.

Rook’s face goes entirely pale in the artificial glare.

"That’s the extinction code," he whispers, pushing me gently off him and scrambling for his discarded pants. "The sun artillery. They aren’t running a simulation, Mara. They are priming the weapon for a live fire."
