Where forbidden tales are told.

The drop is a sensory void, a rushing blindness of screaming wind and falling ash.

I expect the impact to shatter my legs, to fracture my blue-white glaze into a thousand useless pieces. But Nyra twists us in mid-air. She takes the brunt of the landing.

We crash into a mountain of discarded porcelain. The Scrap Abyss. The kingdom’s graveyard for broken tools.

Shards of old, dead Porcelai crunch beneath her boots as she rolls, absorbing the kinetic force, shielding my fragile frame with her own body. We slide down the shifting dune of ceramic bones, coming to a halt at the bottom of the trench.

The acid mist is thick here. It smells of copper and decay. It immediately begins to bite at the edges of my joints.

    Then, the sound comes.

From the upper tiers of the capital, the massive brass amplification horns begin to broadcast. The voice of the Royal Herald echoes down the canyon walls, distorted but perfectly legible.

"Alert. Designation Senn, Archivist F3. Property of the Crown. Treason."

The words hit me harder than the fall.

"Bounty active. All Vanguard units, lethal force authorized. Any citizen harboring the defective unit will face immediate Re-firing."

    I freeze.

For thirty-seven years, my name was never spoken aloud by the court. I wrote their treaties. I cataloged their wars. Princes and Dukes signed their names over my meticulous handwriting, claiming my intellect as their own. I was designed to be invisible, a ghost in the Archives. I spent decades burying tiny, cryptographic fragments of my consciousness into the margins of the ledgers, just to prove to myself that I existed.

Now, my name is echoing across the entire capital. Every aristocrat, every guard, every citizen is hearing it. My private, desperate rebellion has been dragged into the glaring light of the court. I am no longer invisible. I am the most hunted object on Oris.

I clutch the stolen ledger tighter against my chest.

Nyra rises. She doesn’t groan; we don’t have lungs to force air through vocal cords. But her heat core emits a high, whining screech of mechanical distress.

Her left arm, from the elbow down, is a ruin of jagged black enamel and thrashing gold wires.

    "Move," she vibrates.

She leads us through the toxic fog, navigating the maze of hollowed-out industrial shells and rusted iron struts. We slip into the belly of an ancient, discarded smelting kiln, shielding ourselves from the corrosive drizzle.

In the dim, greenish light of the ambient mist, I open the heavy iron-bound ledger.

The pages are not paper. They are micro-thin sheets of pressed ceramic, etched with the kingdom’s structural code. I run my white-glazed fingers over the indentations, reading the data through tactile interface. The heat from my fingertips decrypts the royal ciphers layer by layer.

"This is not a simple purge of defectives," I say. My voice is tight, analytical. The archivist taking over the fugitive.

I trace the column of scheduled activations.

"The Re-firing courtyard wasn’t just prepping for the criminals. Look at the volume."

Nyra stands by the entrance of the kiln, scanning the mist. She doesn’t look at the book.

"Ten thousand units," I whisper, the sheer scale of the math chilling my core. "Tomorrow at dawn. They are going to forcibly recall every archivist, every domestic servant, every courier in the lower rings. They aren’t just melting down the broken ones. They are wiping the entire caste to forge a Vanguard army."

The logic is flawless. An army that has no memory of ever being anything else. An army that cannot question the crown, because the crown holds the key to their very existence. I stole the ledger to save a few names. I am holding the death warrant of our entire species.

Nyra finally steps back from the entrance.

She drops to one knee. Her right hand, sharp and perfectly lethal, reaches into a concealed compartment in her thigh plate. She extracts a small, heated stylus and a spool of raw, unprogrammed memory-gold.

She begins to solder her shattered forearm.

I stop reading. I watch her.

The gold in a Porcelai’s joints is not just connective tissue. It is our nervous system. It is the physical housing of our learned skills, our reflexes, our memories. When we break, we repair the fracture with new gold, but the cost is absolute: whatever data was stored in that specific sector of wire is permanently erased. You survive, but you lose a piece of yourself.

Nyra presses the searing stylus against the exposed, thrashing wires of her arm.

    The molten gold flows.

Her entire frame violently shudders. It is an involuntary physical flinch, a spasm of raw loss. Her four golden eyes dim for a microsecond as a chunk of her neural pathway is burned away and replaced with blank metal.

She doesn’t stop. She methodically seals the next crack. Another violent shudder. Another erasure.

I stare at the web of red kintsugi lines that already map her black enamel shell. She is covered in them. Scars of old repairs. Every red line is a time she was broken. Every red line is a skill she had to forget, a memory she had to burn to stay functional.

She does this too smoothly. The routine is practiced. She is a patchwork of erased selves, constantly overwriting her own existence to keep fighting.

The solder cools, hardening into a bright, sterile seam of new gold.

Nyra powers down the stylus. She looks up.

A royal bodyguard is programmed for perimeter defense. Her optics should be scanning the shadows, her core calculating threat vectors, her auditory sensors tuned to the sound of approaching hounds.

Instead, her four eyes lock onto my face.

The heat radiating from her repaired wires is wrong. It is not the steady, amber glow of a protector. It is a feverish, jagged crimson.

She stares at me with an intensity that feels like a physical pressure against my chest. She isn’t looking at the stolen ledger. She isn’t looking at the acid mist. She is looking at the way the dim light catches the edge of my jaw, the way my fingers curl around the ceramic pages.

It is an obsession. A desperate, starving fixation that completely contradicts the standard logic of her archetype.

I am supposed to be invisible. She was built to be a shadow. Yet she looks at me as if I am the center of gravity, the only object keeping her tethered to the ground.

    Why?

I was assigned a standard Vanguard shadow-unit. They are supposed to be interchangeable. But the way she threw herself into the halberd blade to save me… the way her core is running dangerously hot just by maintaining eye contact with me…

It makes me question the fundamental architecture of her mind. What is she really programmed to do?

I set the ledger down on the ash-covered floor.

    I reach out.

"Your internal fans are failing to vent," I say quietly. "You are running too hot. You’ll crack your own chest plate."

I press two of my white, translucent fingers against the edge of the new gold seam on her forearm, intending to measure the thermal output.

The moment our skin touches, the compressed space between us collapses.

The resonance chamber hollowed out in her pelvis emits a sudden, deep hum. It vibrates through the air and strikes my own core, syncing our internal rhythms.

The physical contact completes a circuit.

A surge of heat arcs from her raw, freshly soldered gold wire directly into my fingertips.

It is not a memory she just erased. It is something deeper. A baseline directive, buried beneath layers of standard Vanguard code, untouched by the fire.

The data playback flashes across my consciousness in a blinding, violent burst of red text and cold intent.

    Directive: Maintain proximity to F3-White.

    Condition: Absolute.

Sub-routine: Assassinate Senn upon activation of the Royal Seal.

My hand jerks back from her arm as if I have been burned.

I look at the creature kneeling before me. The bodyguard who just shattered her own body to save my life. The obsession in her eyes hasn’t wavered.

    She is not my protector.

She is my executioner, waiting for a signal.
