The Hollow of the Ribs was a massive, vaulted chamber of petrified bone, carpeted in thick layers of soft, bioluminescent moss that glowed in reactive waves of cyan and silver. The air here was heavy, still, and fragrant with the scent of ancient amber.
Rho knelt in the moss, his heavy black carapace radiating a blistering heat from the friction of their descent. His spiracles flared, pulling in deep, ragged breaths that shuddered through his massive frame. Sevraine lay sprawled a few feet away, her amber wings splayed open to bleed off the excess thermal energy of the drop.
Between them, the thick blue neural thread pulsed with a steady, blinding rhythm, anchoring the base of her neck to his shoulder.
Sevraine pushed herself up on trembling arms. Her copper-green armor was scuffed with bone-dust, but her electric field hummed with the sheer, exhilarating relief of survival. She looked at the colossal warrior kneeling before her. He had not fought her commands. He had surrendered his wings, his breath, and his life to her absolute control.
"We made it," Sevraine breathed, her antennae sweeping forward. She raised her right hand, preparing to sever the connection, to release his nervous system from her grip. "I will snap the tether now."
"No."
The word was a low, rumbling bass that vibrated through the floor and directly up into Sevraine’s chitin.
Rho lifted his head. His compound eyes locked onto hers in the dim cyan light of the moss. He didn’t move his arms—he couldn’t, she still held the localized lock on his hinges—but his electric field shifted. The residual amber of his adrenaline burned away, replaced by a deep, oceanic copper-green that rushed over Sevraine like a physical wave of heat. It was a pure, unadulterated invitation.
"Commander—"
"Keep it," Rho murmured, his voice thick, heavy with an exhaustion that was not physical, but psychic. "Don’t sever it yet. I yield the tether."
Sevraine’s spiracles hitched. She crawled forward over the soft moss, the blue thread shortening between them, growing thicker, more brilliant. She stopped when her knees brushed the solid black plating of his thighs. The heat rolling off him was intoxicating.
"You are safe now, Rho," Sevraine whispered, her delicate antennae extending to brush against the heavy black stalks of his own. "You don’t have to force yourself to submit anymore. The drop is over."
"I am not forcing anything," Rho said, leaning into her touch. "My entire life is a war of attrition, Oracle. Every second of every day, my blood-curse burns to keep my mind my own. I have never, in thirty-three years, been allowed to lay my armor down." He tilted his head, exposing the glowing injection site where her stinger had pierced him. "When you took control in the chute… it was the first time I have ever felt silence. I didn’t have to carry the weight. You carried it for me."
Sevraine’s INFJ heart ached at the raw, jagged vulnerability beneath his commanding exterior. The ENTJ revolutionary, the man who built his entire identity around absolute autonomy, was begging her to take his burdens.
"I hated my stinger," Sevraine confessed, her voice dropping to a resonant purr as she stroked his cheek-plate. "I was raised to believe this venom was a chain. But feeling you in my mind… feeling your trust… I crave it."
Rho’s mandibles parted. "Then take it. All of it."
Sevraine did not hesitate. Her copper-green aura flared, merging with his. Through the blue thread, she sent a wave of liquid warmth crashing into his nervous system.
"I claim your wrists," she commanded softly.
She lifted her hands. Guided entirely by her mental pressure down the tether, Rho’s massive arms moved. She guided them upward, raising his hands above his head. With a focused thought, she locked the joints. His heavy wrists froze in mid-air, immobilized by her will, leaving his broad chest completely exposed to her.
Rho let out a deep, shuddering groan, his head falling back. The surrender of his physical defenses was an agonizingly sweet relief.
Sevraine leaned in, pressing her copper-green thorax flush against his matte-black chest. The physical contact completed a thermal circuit. The blistering heat of his carapace flowed into her, while the cool, regulating calm of her biology washed into him.
She began to hum. Her amber wings vibrated at a specialized, deeply sensual low frequency. The sound was a physical weight in the cavern, pressing against Rho’s nerve clusters. She used the blue thread to heighten his sensory receptors, rewarding his perfect stillness with cascading waves of euphoric pressure.
Every time she shifted her weight, sliding her armor against his, she sent a targeted burst of venom-laced electricity into his locked joints, sending shivers violently through his massive frame. He couldn’t reach for her. He couldn’t embrace her. He could only endure the agonizing, beautiful overstimulation of her absolute control.
The blue thread between them burned a brilliant, blinding white at its core, a flawless synchronization of their minds. He offered his total presence; she offered her total empathy. They were a single, perfectly integrated organism, communicating entirely through heat, vibration, and the shared, pulsing light of the Vow.
The intimacy peaked in a crescendo of wing-beats, the acoustic resonance shattering the silence of the hollow, echoing up into the ribs of the dead god.
As the peak subsided, the intense copper-green light of their auras softened to a warm, glowing ember. Sevraine rested her chin against his shoulder-guard, her breathing hitched and ragged. Rho’s arms remained locked above his head, his chest heaving, utterly spent, yet his electric field projected a profound, unshakeable peace.
He had not fought her for a single second.
Slowly, Rho uncurled the fingers of his locked left hand. Resting perfectly intact in the center of his palm was the hard, red antidote seed. He had held his salvation the entire time, choosing her command over his freedom in every consecutive heartbeat.
Sevraine smiled against his armor. She shifted back slightly, dropping her wings to a different, therapeutic frequency—the biological aftercare of the waspfolk. The low, purring vibration massaged his chest, breaking up the lactic acid in his muscles and restoring the uninhibited flow of his hemolymph.
"Crush the seed," Sevraine whispered, her antennae stroking his face. "It’s time to come back to me."
Rho closed his fist. With a sharp crack, the red seed fractured.
Instantly, a wave of cool, white energy washed over his carapace. The venom in his nervous system neutralized in a chemical flash. The thick blue thread connecting them dissolved into harmless, sparkling mist.
Rho’s arms dropped. His autonomy returned smoothly, without the violent whiplash of a forced severing. He caught Sevraine by the waist, his massive hands gentle as he pulled her back against his chest, burying his face in the crook of her neck.
"Flawless," he rumbled, his voice heavy with contentment.
Then, Sevraine screamed.
It was a piercing, horrific sound of absolute agony. Her body arched backward, rigid, her copper-green armor instantly dulling to a sickly, oxidized gray.
From the impenetrable darkness of the cavern ceiling far above, a ghostly, jagged blue thread shot downward like a lightning bolt. It bypassed Rho entirely, slamming violently into the center of Sevraine’s chest-plate, hooking directly into her primary neural cluster.
Rho’s combat instincts, dormant seconds ago, exploded into terrifying violence. He shoved Sevraine behind him and stood, his arm-blades deploying from his forearms with a metallic shhhk. He searched the darkness, his electric field flaring into a blinding, murderous red.
There was no enemy. Only the ethereal, jagged blue cable attached to the Oracle.
Sevraine thrashed on the moss, her hands clawing at her own chest, trying to rip the phantom thread away. "Voices!" she shrieked, her antennae sparking with chaotic static. "Too many! They’re screaming—"
Rho didn’t understand the magic, but he understood the threat. He lunged forward and grabbed the ghostly blue thread with his bare hands.
The moment his skin made contact with the corrupt magic, his ancient blood-curse flared. Black, ethereal fire erupted from his palms, roaring up his arms. The curse identified the hostile neural invasion and sought to incinerate it. The heat was agonizing, burning his own chitin, but he clamped his massive jaw shut and squeezed the thread harder, channeling his absolute defiance into the ethereal construct.
The jagged thread hissed, boiling under the black fire of his curse, and with a sound like snapping steel, it shattered.
Sevraine collapsed, gasping violently, her spiracles pulling in desperate lungfuls of air.
Rho fell to his knees beside her, his hands smoking, the black fire receding back into his veins. He scooped her up, his antennae urgently checking her vitals. "Sevraine! What was that? A marrow-trap?"
Sevraine clutched his forearms, her compound eyes wide with sheer, unadulterated horror. She wasn’t looking at him; she was staring through him, processing the data dump that had just been forced into her brain.
"Not a trap," she panted, her voice cracking. "A tether. I saw it, Rho. When the thread attached, I saw the network."
She pulled herself up, her hands trembling so badly they clicked against his armor. She scrambled off his lap and dropped to her knees in the dirt beneath the moss. She frantically gathered a handful of crushed, glowing cyan sap and began to draw erratic, frantic lines in the soil.
"Kaelen," Sevraine choked out, drawing a massive circle. "The mass binding. When I performed the Emerald Vow on the altar… Kaelen didn’t just use me to bind the workers. He used the purity of my Vow as a trojan horse."
She drew hundreds of jagged lines feeding into the central circle. "The dead god’s nervous system rejects forced commands on a mass scale. It requires true consent to establish a deep link. Kaelen has been using my consented links—my ethical bindings—to establish the primary channels. And once my pure thread is anchored, he piggybacks thousands of forced, unconsenting souls onto my signature, bypassing the god’s immune response."
Rho stared at the glowing diagram in the dirt. The tactical reality settled over him like a suffocating blanket. "He is using your integrity to enslave the city."
"I am the lockpick," Sevraine whispered, a tear of glowing hemolymph welling in her eye. "Every time I showed mercy, every time I helped a volunteer… I opened a door for him to drag a thousand slaves through."
Rho’s jaw tightened. He reached out, his heavy hand resting over hers, stopping her frantic drawing. "Then we sever the network. We find the central node and we burn it out."
"If we cut the main line, the shockwave will kill the volunteers!" Sevraine argued, her Fe (extroverted feeling) screaming at the thought of the collateral damage. "The souls who chose to stay, the golden threads I saw in the network—they will be evaporated along with the forced ones. We can’t just destroy it. We have to sort it from the inside."
Rho withdrew his hand, his tactical mind calculating the impossible logistics. "How do you ‘sort’ millions of souls inside a dead god’s nervous system?"
"We reach the God’s Heart," Sevraine said, pointing a trembling finger into the dark expanse of the cavern. "The central neural node. The tap Kaelen uses to siphon the power. If we can interface with it, I can broadcast a ‘Choice’ frequency. I can forcefully untether the jagged lines and reinforce the golden ones."
"Can you survive interfacing with a node that size?" Rho demanded.
Sevraine looked up at him, the terrifying truth settling between them. "I can’t. My nervous system would fry in a microsecond. The only way to hack a system that massive is if I inject a conduit with a lethal dose of my venom. A subject strong enough to ground the psychic current of a million souls."
Silence descended on the hollow.
Rho looked down at his own massive, scarred hands. To act as the conduit, he would have to drop his blood-curse completely. He would have to open his mind to the screaming agony of the entire enslaved city, and trust Sevraine to filter it before it tore his consciousness apart.
He didn’t flinch. He slowly clicked his mandibles, a deep, resonant sound of absolute resolve. "We go to the Heart."
Before Sevraine could reply, the ground beneath them began to vibrate. It wasn’t the slow, tectonic groan of the god’s settling bones. It was a rapid, rhythmic thudding from the ceiling.
Sevraine’s antennae whipped upward, tasting the air. The scent of ozone and rotting marrow flooded the hollow.
"They tracked the broken thread," Sevraine hissed, scrambling to her feet, her hands reaching for her stinger.
From the impenetrable darkness above, dark shapes began to detach themselves from the ribs. They did not fall; they drifted down with terrifying, silent efficiency.
The Hollowed.
They landed in a wide perimeter around the bioluminescent moss bed. There were six of them. Elite, fully overridden undead warriors. They wore the bleached-white bone armor of the Inquisition, but their eye-sockets were completely hollowed out, glowing with a sickly, jagged blue light. They carried heavy, serrated great-swords.
What terrified Sevraine most was their silence. Waspfolk warriors always hummed before a strike—a biological necessity to warm up the wing muscles for combat bursts. The Hollowed were perfectly, unnaturally silent, their wings amputated to prevent the noise, their bodies puppeted entirely by Kaelen’s remote commands.
They raised their swords in perfect unison.
Rho stepped in front of Sevraine. He didn’t draw a weapon. Instead, he deployed his arm-blades with a violent shhhk, the obsidian edges gleaming in the cyan light. He rolled his heavy shoulders, shaking off the last remnants of their peaceful aftercare.
He turned his head slightly, offering his left shoulder to Sevraine. His electric field flared into a brilliant, blinding copper-green of absolute, lethal consent.
"Bind my left arm to your right, Oracle," Rho rumbled, a dark, predatory grin exposing his mandibles. "Let’s dance."
