The interior of the study is a tomb of shadows, illuminated only by the jagged flashes of lightning tearing through the Chicago sky.
I do not turn on the brass reading lamp. I move entirely by memory and the pale moonlight spilling across the Persian rug. The grey maintenance card is slick with the sweat of my palm. I step past the heavy mahogany desk, ignoring the silver Zippo lighter that mocks me from the darkness. My focus is entirely on the wall panel behind Nikolai’s leather chair.
I run my fingers along the seam of the dark oak wainscoting until I feel the microscopic groove. I press. A section of the wood pops outward with a quiet click, revealing a recessed wall safe. The electronic keypad pulses with a steady, yellow maintenance light.
My heart hammers against my ribs, a frantic, violent rhythm.
I slide the stolen magnetic card into the override slot. The machine hums, a low vibration that travels up my forearm, before the heavy steel bolts retract with a heavy, metallic clack. I pull the safe open. Inside, resting on a velvet shelf, is a thick, leather-bound book. The ledger. The physical record of my father’s sins, and the only leverage I have to destroy the monster who bought me.
I reach inside and curl my fingers around the cold leather spine.
"I was wondering how long it would take you to find it."
The voice is a low, gravelly rasp that paralyzes my lungs. It does not come from the hallway. It comes from the deepest, pitch-black corner of the study.
A heavy click echoes through the room. The ambient security lights flare to life, bathing the study in a dim, blood-red glow.
Nikolai is sitting in a wingback chair by the fireplace, a crystal glass of amber liquid resting loosely in his hand. He isn’t wearing his suit jacket. His white shirt is unbuttoned at the collar, his sleeves rolled up to expose the dark, jagged ink of Bratva tattoos crawling up his forearms. He looks entirely relaxed, but it is the terrifying stillness of a predator that has just watched its prey step willingly into the center of the trap.
He didn’t follow me in. He had been sitting here in the dark the entire time. Waiting.
Nikolai
She freezes, her hand still inside the open safe.
In the crimson emergency lighting, Anya looks like a marble statue of a fallen angel. Her silk nightgown clings to the curves of her hips, her dark hair tumbling over her bare shoulders. She is beautiful, and she is a liar.
The beast inside my chest thrashes, howling at the absolute confirmation of her betrayal. I gave her the keys to her own cage, and she immediately used them to dig a knife into my spine. I should call Viktor. I should have her dragged to the basement and stripped of her protections. That is the law of the Bratva.
But as I stand up from the chair, the glass of whiskey shattering against the brick hearth, I don’t reach for my radio. I walk toward her.
"You took the grey card from the dining room," I say, my voice vibrating with a lethal frequency. "You bypassed the cameras. You crept through my house in the dead of night to steal from me."
She doesn’t speak. She pulls her hand out of the safe, clutching the heavy leather ledger, and takes a slow step backward until her spine hits the edge of the mahogany desk.
"Are you going to shoot me?" she whispers. Her voice is remarkably steady, but I can see the violent, rapid rise and fall of her chest.
"Shooting you would be entirely too merciful, ptichka," I murmur.
I close the distance between us in three long strides. I don’t give her a chance to run. I plant my hands on the edge of the desk, boxing her in, trapping her exactly as I did in the bedroom. But this time, the fragile illusion of a truce is shattered.
I crowd into her space, my chest pressing against the soft curve of her breasts. The scent of her—vanilla, rain, and the sharp metallic tang of sheer panic—floods my senses. I reach down, my large hands gripping her hips with brutal, unforgiving possession. I am going to tear away every lie she is wearing. I am going to break the cold, aristocratic facade until nothing is left but the raw, trembling girl underneath.
Anya
He is a wall of heat and fury. The sheer physical power of him radiates like an open furnace.
His fingers dig into my waist through the thin silk of my nightgown, his thumbs pressing deeply into my hip bones. The sensory overload is instantaneous. The smell of the spilled whiskey, the heavy rhythm of his breathing, the rough calluses of his hands burning against my skin.
He leans down, his mouth hovering a fraction of an inch from my lips. "Show me what you are hiding, Anya."
He is going to search me. He is going to pry the ledger from my fingers. If he takes it, I have nothing. I am just another casualty of the syndicate.
The survival instinct overrides my terror. If I cannot fight his strength, I have to completely derail his focus.
I don’t push him away. Instead, I slide the ledger behind my back, pressing it flat against the mahogany surface of the desk. With my hands suddenly free, I reach up, tangling my fingers in his dark hair, and pull his mouth down to mine.
I kiss him with all the desperate, violent energy I have left in my body.
It is not a kiss of surrender. It is an act of war. I bite down on his lower lip, tasting the copper tang of blood, parting my lips to let him in. I arch my back, pressing the ledger firmly against the wood so it won’t slip, while simultaneously molding my hips flush against his. I offer him the one thing he wants more than my confession. I offer him ownership.
A guttural groan rips through Nikolai’s chest. For a fraction of a second, he freezes, stunned by the sudden offensive. Then, the cage breaks.
Nikolai
The taste of her blood and her desperation destroys the last thread of my control.
I grip the back of her thighs, lifting her effortlessly off the floor and slamming her down onto the edge of the mahogany desk. Documents and pens scatter, crashing to the floor, but I don’t care. I push my body perfectly between her parted legs.
She is using her body as a shield. I know exactly what she is doing. She is trying to distract me from whatever she has hidden behind her back. But as my mouth devours hers, as I swallow her breathless gasps, the tactical logic of the pakhan evaporates into pure, primal lust.
I drag my hands up her thighs, catching the hem of her silk nightgown and pushing it up to her waist. Her skin is impossibly soft, burning hot against my calloused palms. I tear my mouth away from hers, dragging my teeth down the long, pale column of her throat.
"You think you can play me," I grind out against her skin, my hands gripping the delicate lace of her panties. "You think you can buy your way out of this with a kiss."
"Then stop," she gasps, her nails digging viciously into my shoulders.
I rip the lace effortlessly.
I don’t stop. I unbuckle my belt with one hand, my eyes locked on hers. I want to see her act through this. I want to see how long she can maintain the lie.
I push into her, hard and deep, without warning.
A sharp, ragged cry tears from her throat. Her back arches off the desk, her head throwing back to expose her neck. I wrap my hand around her throat—not tight enough to choke, just enough to anchor her to me, to claim the pulse racing wildly under my palm.
I move inside her with a rough, punishing rhythm. I want to break her open. But as the friction builds, the dynamic violently shifts in my arms.
She isn’t enduring this. She isn’t dissociating.
Her legs wrap tightly around my waist, locking me in. Her hands slide from my shoulders to my chest, her fingernails scraping desperately over my scars. She is matching my violence with her own frantic need. Her eyes are wide, glassy, the pupils blown completely black. The calculated manipulation has burned away, leaving only a raw, beautiful desperation. She is falling apart underneath me, gasping my name like a prayer, completely tethered to the physical reality of my body.
I bury my face in her neck, my own control snapping. I drive into her one final, brutal time, my vision whiting out as the climax rips through me, pouring into her with a heavy, possessive finality.
Anya
The silence that follows is deafening, broken only by the sound of our ragged breathing.
My body is entirely numb, tingling with a shocking, devastating euphoria that I was completely unprepared for. My mind is a shattered mirror. I had weaponized my body to protect a secret, but in the fire of his touch, I had forgotten the secret entirely. For a few terrifying minutes, I was not a Petrov captive, and he was not the Sokolov monster. We were just two desperate, broken things colliding in the dark.
Nikolai rests his forehead against mine. His chest heaves against me, slick with sweat. Slowly, the ruthless pakhan returns to his eyes. He pulls away from me, fixing his clothes with sharp, mechanical movements. He does not say a word. He turns his back, walking toward the adjoining private bathroom to wash the blood and sweat from his hands.
The click of the bathroom door closing shocks my brain back into survival mode.
I am still sitting on the edge of the desk. My hands are trembling violently.
I reach behind my back. My fingers brush against the cold leather of the ledger. I survived. I kept it hidden.
I pull the heavy book into my lap. The leather cover is bound by a thick, titanium strap, secured by a small digital combination lock. I had assumed the ledger was open in the safe, but the safe was merely the outer shell.
I squint in the red emergency light, looking closely at the digital display on the lock. I need to figure out how to crack it before I can send the data. But as my eyes focus on the glowing screen, my breath catches in my throat.
The lock is already disengaged.
The digital screen shows the four-digit master override code that Nikolai must have used to reset the system. The numbers glow in bright, undeniable crimson.
04-11.
I stare at the numbers, the cold reality of them turning my blood to ice.
April 11th.
It is my birthday.
He didn’t just claim me as a debt payment three days ago. He has had his encryption keys, his most guarded secrets, locked behind the date of my birth long before my father ever fell.
