    Anya

The underground Bratva clinic smells of industrial bleach, copper, and sterile gauze.

It has been forty-eight hours since the shootout at the estate. I have not slept. I sit in the uncomfortable plastic chair at the end of the private recovery room, the heavy leather ledger resting securely on my lap. The blood on my hands has been scrubbed away, but I am still wearing Nikolai’s oversized, ruined suit jacket over my borrowed scrubs. It smells like him—smoke, ozone, and survival.

Viktor stands by the heavy steel door, his arms crossed over his chest. He looks exhausted, but his eyes remain sharp, tracking my every movement. He does not trust me. According to the syndicate’s logic, Nikolai is incapacitated, my family’s men breached the perimeter, and I am sitting here holding the nuclear codes to the Sokolov empire.

"The council is calling for a meeting," Viktor states, his voice a low, gravelly rumble that barely disturbs the rhythmic beeping of the heart monitor. "They want the ledger, Anya. They want to know the exact financial damage your father caused before they authorize the retaliation strikes."

I look at the thick, titanium strap binding the leather book. Three days ago, this object was my salvation. It was the key to my freedom, the leverage I needed to escape a forced marriage and tear down the monster who bought me.

But the monsters in the dark are not always the ones who hurt you. Sometimes, they are the ones who step in front of the bullets meant for your chest.

"The council gets nothing," I say softly, lifting my gaze to meet Viktor’s cold stare.

The lieutenant stiffens, his hand dropping instinctually toward the holster at his waist. "You do not give orders here."

"I am the pakhan’s wife," I reply, my voice perfectly steady, echoing the absolute, terrifying coldness Nikolai taught me. I stand up, the oversized jacket hanging heavily off my shoulders. I step toward Viktor, not breaking eye contact. "You will tell the council that the Petrov debt is settled in blood. If any capo questions Nikolai’s authority while he is recovering, you will tell them that I hold the ledger, and I will personally dismantle their offshore accounts before morning."

Viktor’s jaw clenches. He evaluates me, looking for the terrified captive he escorted from the chapel. But that girl died in the study, right next to the uncle who tried to execute her husband.

After a long, agonizing silence, Viktor gives a slow, deeply respectful nod. "Understood, gospozha."

    Nikolai

Pain is the first thing that registers. It is a blinding, radiating fire tearing through the right side of my torso, anchoring me violently to the physical world.

I force my eyes open. The harsh fluorescent lights of the clinic blur into sharp white halos before slowly resolving into the sterile ceiling tiles. The rhythmic, mechanical hiss of the ventilator and the steady beep of the monitors fill my ears.

I try to move my right arm, but a sudden, terrifying absence stops me.

    My hand is empty.

The last memory I have is the suffocating darkness of the study floor, the smell of my own blood pooling on the rug, and the frantic, racing pulse of Anya’s wrist trapped in my grip. I had held onto her with the absolute, desperate certainty that if I let go, the world would swallow her.

Panic, sharp and blinding, spikes through my chest. I turn my head, ignoring the tearing agony in my ribs.

    She is here.

Anya is standing near the foot of the hospital bed. She is wearing my ruined suit jacket, her dark hair pulled back into a messy knot. She is speaking to Viktor in a low, commanding tone, her posture rigid with an authority that sends a dark, possessive thrill straight to my core. I watch the way my lieutenant bows his head and steps out of the room, leaving her in absolute control of the space.

She turns around. Her icy blue eyes lock onto mine, and the breath catches in her throat.

The terrifying beast that has lived in my chest since I was a boy—the paranoia, the desperate need to control every variable to ensure my survival—suddenly goes completely, blissfully quiet. Looking at her, standing guard over my ruined body, I realize the cage is no longer necessary. I do not have to trap her to keep her.

    Anya

    He is awake.

I cross the room in three strides, dropping the heavy ledger onto the rolling metal bedside table. His face is pale, shadowed with exhaustion, and a thick labyrinth of bandages wraps around his torso. But his dark eyes are entirely lucid, tracking me with that familiar, predatory intensity.

"You are giving my lieutenant orders," Nikolai rasps, his voice rough from disuse.

"Someone has to keep the wolves in line while you sleep," I whisper, stopping right beside the rail of the bed. I want to touch him, to feel the heat of his skin and confirm he is truly tethered to the earth, but I am afraid of hurting him.

He doesn’t share my hesitation. He lifts his left hand, his calloused fingers wrapping weakly but firmly around my wrist, pulling me closer. The touch is a direct continuation of the grip he held as he bled out on the floor.

I look down at him, my heart hammering a frantic rhythm against my ribs. "The doctor said the bullet missed your lung by a fraction of an inch. You should be dead."

"I told you," he murmurs, his thumb brushing over my pulse point. "I am not a man who lets go of what belongs to him."

I look at the heavy leather ledger resting on the metal table. It is the physical manifestation of all the lies, the bloodshed, and the betrayal that brought us together. I reach for it, pulling it toward the edge of the table.

"They want this," I say quietly. "The council. Viktor. My father’s remaining men. It is a map to an empire."

Nikolai watches me. He does not ask for it. He does not command me to hand it over. He simply waits, giving me the absolute power to choose my own fate.

I reach into the pocket of my scrubs and pull out the silver Zippo lighter.

    Nikolai

She flips the lid of the silver lighter. The metallic clink echoes sharply in the quiet room.

The small, orange flame flares to life, illuminating the sharp, beautiful angles of her face. She doesn’t hesitate. She holds the corner of the heavy parchment pages over the fire.

    The dry paper catches instantly.

I watch in silent fascination as Anya drops the burning ledger into the stainless steel medical basin at the end of the bed. The flames consume the offshore accounts, the blackmail material, and the stolen Petrov wealth. She is burning her only leverage. She is destroying the weapon she endured a forced marriage to secure.

She stands over the basin, her face bathed in the golden light of the fire, watching the ashes curl and blacken until nothing is left but smoke.

When it is done, she turns back to me. She closes the lid of the Zippo and presses the warm, silver metal directly into my palm, folding my fingers over it.

It is a profound, earth-shattering surrender. She is not just giving up the debt; she is forgiving the blood on my hands. She understands the monster I am, the terrible things I have done in the name of her survival, and she is choosing to stand in the dark with me.

    Anya

The fire dies down, leaving the scent of charred paper hanging heavy in the sterile air.

Nikolai’s hand tightens around the silver lighter, but his eyes never leave mine. He pulls me down. I lean over the bed rails, pressing my forehead against his, inhaling the scent of him.

"No more secrets," I whisper against his lips.

"No more exits," he replies, his voice a low, gravelly promise.

He kisses me, a slow, deep claim that tastes of survival and ash. There are no illusions left between us. We are not good people. We are two dangerous, broken things that have collided in the ruins of a war, forging a bond in blood that neither time nor the syndicate will ever be able to break. I press my hand against the bandages over his heart, feeling the steady, powerful rhythm beneath my palm, finally knowing exactly where I belong.
