Where forbidden tales are told.

The chains suspended from the ceiling dig so deeply into my wrists that I can no longer feel my fingers. The pain in my shoulders is a dull, tearing fire, but it is nothing compared to the absolute, hollow void expanding in my chest.

Blood drips steadily from my chin, splashing onto the pristine white floor of the operative theater. Silas is standing behind the command console, his tailored suit immaculate, his smile sharp and satisfied. Ryn is leaning against the wall, swirling his green gin. But my eyes are locked entirely on the massive, heavily armored figure standing in the open blast doorway.

    Kaelen.

I stare at him through the haze of my own exhaustion. This is the part where the story ends. This is the part where the logic of the Ashlands reasserts itself. I am a broken tool, a living cipher worth billions of credits, and he is a mercenary who survives by cutting his losses. I expect him to look at me with cold, calculating detachment. I expect him to negotiate a price with Silas, or turn his back and walk away into the acid rain.

But as the heavy, concussive silence stretches through the room, Kaelen’s organic eye locks onto the shallow, bleeding cuts carved into my chest.

The low, predatory hum of his spinal servos does not just vibrate; it shrieks. The air in the room pressure-drops, heavy with the sudden, suffocating promise of absolute slaughter. He does not look at me like a compromised asset. He looks at the chains holding me as a personal, unforgivable offense.

"Kill him," Silas sighs, waving a hand toward the doorway.

The sterile white walls of the theater suddenly detach, revealing hidden alcoves. A dozen heavily augmented elite guards step into the room, their plasma rifles whining as they power up.

Kaelen does not retreat. He does not seek cover. He steps forward.

The room explodes into blinding light and deafening noise. I squeeze my eyes shut, flinching as stray plasma rounds scorch the air inches from my face. Kaelen is a terrifying blur of kinetic violence. He tears through the guards not with tactical precision, but with a raw, desperate brutality that completely ignores his own defense. He takes a grazing hit to his heavily plated shoulder, entirely unfazed, and drives his chrome fist through the visor of the nearest guard.

Ryn drops his glass, his mocking smile vanishing as he scrambles for the secondary exit. Silas barks frantic orders, backing away from the console as his elite squad is systematically dismantled.

I pull desperately at my chains, my breath coming in ragged gasps. Tick. Whir. Click. The stabilizer in my chest is whining erratically, damaged by the electrical shocks Silas used during the interrogation.

    "Jax!"

Kaelen’s voice is a terrifying, synthetic roar. He clears the space between us, his armor scorched black, leaking viscous hydraulic fluid. One of the surviving guards, bleeding from a shattered jaw, raises a heavy pulse-cannon, aiming directly at my suspended body.

I see the weapon charge. There is nowhere to swing, nowhere to hide.

Kaelen does not fire back. There is no time. Instead, he throws his massive, heavy frame directly into the line of fire, wrapping his arms around my waist and twisting us so his back takes the full brunt of the shot.

The concussive force of the pulse-cannon is deafening. The blast strikes Kaelen squarely between the shoulder blades, right where his synthetic plating fuses with his organic spine. A sickening crunch echoes through the room, followed by the sharp scent of melting polymer and burning flesh. Kaelen grunts—a raw, agonizing sound—but his grip on me does not loosen a fraction of an inch.

He raises his heavy, overheated chrome hand, grabs the industrial steel chain above my head, and brutally snaps it in half.

I collapse into him. We hit the floor together, sliding across the slick, bloodstained tiles. My knees give out, the trauma and blood loss finally catching up to me, but Kaelen immediately hauls me up. His left arm is hanging uselessly at his side, the servos completely fried by the blast, sparking with erratic blue electricity.

"Can you run?" he grinds out, his breathing heavy, uneven.

I look at the smoking crater in his back armor. He took a lethal hit. For me. The fundamental rule of my entire existence—that no one in the Ashlands ever stays, that I am entirely disposable—shatters into a million irreparable pieces. My throat tightens so violently I can barely breathe.

"Yes," I choke out, grabbing the heavy tactical strap across his chest. "I’ve got you."

He raises his remaining sidearm, blindly firing three rounds toward the command console to keep Silas pinned down, and drags me toward the eastern maintenance corridor.

We stumble through the winding, dimly lit tunnels beneath the fortress. The alarms are blaring, bathing the concrete in a harsh, pulsing red light. The air is thick with smoke and the metallic tang of blood. Kaelen is slowing down. Every step he takes is heavy, uncoordinated. The stabilizing hum of his cybernetics is fluctuating wildly, groaning under the catastrophic damage to his power core.

I wrap my uninjured arm tightly around his waist, wedging my shoulder under his organic arm to take his weight. He is incredibly heavy, a mountain of dense muscle and dead iron, but I refuse to let him drop. My entire life has been defined by running away alone. But as I feel the erratic, failing rhythm of his breathing against my neck, an iron resolve anchors itself in my shattered chest. I will drag him through the mud, I will carry his armor, I will tear this world apart with my bare hands, but I will not let him die in the dark.

"Leave me," Kaelen rasps, his boots dragging against the rusted grating. "Core is… leaking. I’m dead weight, Jax. Go."

"Shut up," I snarl, tears of pure, furious adrenaline blurring my vision. "Rule three, right? Every command you issue is absolute. Well, my rule is you don’t get to die on me. Keep walking, you heavy bastard."

We reach a collapsed junction, sealing the heavy blast door behind us. The pursuit sounds muffled, distant. We are temporarily safe in the dark, suffocating belly of the ruins.

I ease Kaelen down against the damp, mold-covered concrete wall. He slumps heavily, his chin resting on his chest, the blue lights on his HUD flickering weakly. I drop to my knees beside him, my hands trembling as I try to inspect the catastrophic wound on his back.

But as I reach out, my vision violently pitches sideways.

A sudden, blinding spike of agony erupts in the center of my ribs. The world goes completely silent for a terrifying second, replaced by a high-pitched, continuous squeal.

    Whiiiiiiiiiine.

The bio-stabilizer in my chest. The electrical torture overloaded the primary capacitors, and the dead sprint through the tunnels drained the last fraction of its emergency battery. The erratic ticking stops entirely, replaced by a solid, terrifying red glow shining through the thin skin of my chest.

    My organic heart violently seizes.

I collapse onto the rusted grating, my hands clawing frantically at my own throat as my lungs refuse to draw air. The pain is absolute. It feels like a jagged piece of iron is being twisted directly into my sternum. I am suffocating, my body violently convulsing as the failing implant drags my heart into total cardiac arrest.

Through the blurring, darkening edges of my vision, I see Kaelen force his head up.

He sees the solid red light. He hears the continuous whine of the failing cipher.

He drags himself forward, his organic hand slipping on the wet concrete. His own breathing is shallow, his systems critically failing, but the look in his mismatched eyes is entirely, terrifyingly lucid. He knows exactly what is happening. My battery is dead. The cipher is shutting down, and it is taking my heart with it.

"Jax," his voice is a distorted, static-filled whisper.

I cannot answer. I am drowning on dry land, my fingers curling into the rusted floor.

Kaelen does not hesitate. He does not calculate the odds. He reaches into the gaping, smoking crater in his own chest armor, his fingers digging brutally into the tangled mess of wires, fused flesh, and chrome. He lets out a raw, guttural roar of absolute agony as he manually bypasses his own internal safety locks.

With a sickening crack of breaking ribs and tearing synthetic muscle, Kaelen rips the glowing, cylindrical micro-fusion core directly out of his own chest.

The hum of his spinal servos dies instantly. The ambient lights on his armor go completely dark.

He falls heavily over me, his trembling, blood-soaked hand pressing the glowing core directly against the failing adapter port on my chest. He forces the locking mechanism to engage, physically integrating his life source into my dying machinery.

A massive, violent surge of energy explodes through my chest. My spine arches off the floor as the stabilizer violently kicks back online, forcing my heart to beat with terrifying, artificial strength. Air rushes back into my lungs in a ragged, agonizing gasp.

I blink through the tears, my hands immediately flying up to grab his shoulders.

Kaelen is slumped flush against me. The immense heat of his body is rapidly fading. The terrifying strength that defined him is completely gone. His organic eye is half-open, staring at me, the harshness completely stripped away, leaving only a profound, devastating peace.

He rests his forehead heavily against my shoulder.

"Live, kid," he breathes, the sound barely more than a rush of air.

His eyes slide shut. The massive, armored weight of him goes entirely slack against my chest, and the last of his breath ghosts across my neck before he goes terrifyingly, absolutely still.
