The scent of blood was no longer a clinical observation; it was the atmosphere itself.

The Red Dogs had torn through the bunker with the mindless savagery of starving wolves. Shelves had been overturned, glass cabinets shattered into dust, and the sterile white tiles of my medical bay were now slick with the debris of a life systematically dismantled. Marcus, the man with the scarred lip, stood over me, his rifle barrel pressed hard against my collarbone.

"The boss wants you to watch, Rowan," Marcus spat, his grin revealing rotted teeth. "He wants you to see exactly what happens to an Enforcer who thinks she’s bigger than the syndicate."

I didn’t struggle. My hands were bound behind my back with heavy-duty zip ties, the plastic biting into my wrists. I didn’t care about the pain. I didn’t care about the gun. My eyes were locked onto Elara. She was being held by two of Marcus’s men on the far side of the room, her hair disheveled, her scrubs torn, but her gaze—that fierce, analytical, unbroken gaze—was fixed entirely on me.

"Leave her out of this," I growled, my voice sounding like gravel under a boot. "This is between you, me, and Silas. She’s just a debtor."

"She’s a bargaining chip now," Marcus laughed, shifting his rifle to rest against my chest while he reached into his pocket for his radio. "Silas is on his way. He wants to execute the final whistle himself."

I watched the red light on the server key sitting on the desk just out of reach.

My heart was a drum, but my mind was cold, calculating, and surgical. I had spent five years learning how to hold a steady hand under the most grotesque pressure. Rowan thought she was the only one capable of sacrifice. She thought she was the only one who could play the part of the monster to save the innocent.

    She was wrong.

"Hey," I called out, my voice cracking, then steadying. I looked at the man holding my arm. "If you’re going to kill me, at least let me take this off. It’s cutting off my circulation."

The guard glanced at Marcus, then back at me, a cruel smirk playing on his lips. He loosened his grip on my left arm to reach for the restraints on my wrists. It was the moment of weakness I needed.

I didn’t go for his eyes. I went for the femoral artery in his thigh, driving the small, jagged piece of glass I had palmed from the shattered cabinet directly into the soft tissue.

He shrieked, his grip failing instantly. I didn’t hesitate. I lunged, not for the door, but for the table. I grabbed the vial of high-concentration adrenaline I had cataloged during the long, sleepless night—the one meant for emergency cardiac restarts.

"Elara, no!" I screamed, the sound tearing through the room.

She didn’t stop. She didn’t look back. She darted through the chaos of the room, her movements fluid and precise, a blur of motion amidst the lumbering, violent men. Marcus turned, his rifle swinging toward her, but she was already at the server rack.

She slammed the server key into the port, the terminal flickering to life with a blinding, neon-blue glow.

"Drop your weapons!" Elara shouted, her voice amplified by the room’s emergency speakers. "I’ve just uploaded the entire syndicate database to every precinct, every news outlet, and every rival crew in the city. If I die, the encryption fails, and the leak becomes public domain. Silas loses everything in thirty seconds."

The room went deathly silent. Even Marcus froze, his finger hovering over the trigger.

"She’s bluffing," Marcus snarled, though his voice wavered.

"Am I?" Elara asked, her hand hovering over the ‘delete’ key. "Kill me, and you’ll be the first ones the police come for when they see your names on the payroll."

The silence was heavy, thick with the smell of smoke and impending death. Marcus took a step forward, his eyes darting between me and the glowing terminal.

"You don’t have the guts," he whispered, raising his rifle.

I looked at Rowan. She was staring at me with a mixture of agony and awe. I saw the way her gaze shifted to the side of the room, where Silas Thorne had just entered, his silver cane tapping against the concrete, a small, polite smile on his face.

"Well done, Dr. Quinn," Silas said, his voice echoing. "Truly. But you forgot one detail."

He pulled a small remote from his pocket. "The bunker isn’t just a fortress. It’s a furnace."

He pressed the button. The fire suppression system didn’t activate with foam or water. It activated with a high-pressure burst of incendiary gas.

    Everything turned to flame.

The heat was instantaneous, a roaring wall of white-hot air that knocked the breath out of my lungs. The Red Dogs screamed, but their voices were swallowed by the inferno.

I broke my zip ties, the plastic snapping under the sheer, desperate surge of adrenaline. I didn’t run for the exit. I lunged through the flames, my skin searing, my lungs burning as I navigated the carnage to reach her.

Elara was slumped against the terminal, the fire licking at her hair. I scooped her up, shielding her with my own body, my leather coat acting as a temporary barrier against the flash-heat.

Then, a shot rang out—a sharp, deafening crack that cut through the roar of the fire.

A bullet caught me in the shoulder, the force of the impact spinning me around. I collapsed, the pain a white-hot spike that pierced through the sensory overload of the heat. Silas stood at the edge of the fire, his gun leveled at us, his face a mask of cold, aristocratic detachment.

"A pity," he murmured, his thumb moving to pull the trigger for the final shot. "But every debt must be settled."
