Where forbidden tales are told.

My palm rests flat against the cold brass of the master kill-switch. Veyra’s hand covers mine, the heat of her skin burning through the thin leather of her glove, pressing my fingers down. Turn it. The invitation is a total surrender, a terrifying relinquishing of power from the tyrant who controls the world.

I wrap my fingers around the heavy brass grip. I pull downward.

    The lever refuses to yield.

Instead of the satisfying heavy clack of a mechanical disconnect, a violent shudder tears through the floorboards, traveling up my boots and rattling my teeth. But it is not the quiet of a dying engine. A deafening, localized explosion rocks the aft-hull, throwing both of us against the edge of the console. The raiders outside haven’t retreated; they have breached the exterior atmospheric seals. The violent howl of the ash-storm floods the lower intake vents, a wall of pure kinetic drag slamming into the side of the Last Meridian.

The console blares a continuous, ear-splitting shriek. Harsh red warning runes cascade down the shattered glass touch-plates.

The engine is starving. Deprived of its aerodynamic shielding and fighting the sheer weight of the storm, the furnace’s consumption rate spikes exponentially. The mechanical groan of the massive iron wheels beneath us shifts into a desperate, grinding whine. The readouts flash a single, brutal demand: the core requires a massive infusion of kinetic witness-energy to maintain thrust. It needs a thousand names, immediately, or the train will stall and drop the entire city into the abyss.

"The atmospheric locks are gone," Veyra says, her voice tight as she pushes off the console, blood trickling from a cut on her cheekbone. She reaches for her wrist-cuff to issue a command to the Praetorians.

But I am not looking at the readouts. I am looking at the star-metal core.

The emergency override has cracked the heavy containment housing open. Blinding, icy blue light floods the cargo bay, washing out the harsh red emergency strobes. I raise my arm to shield my eyes, but the light seems to bypass my retinas entirely, striking directly at the base of my skull. The raw star-metal spins, emitting a low, oscillating hum. The frequency catches in my chest. It is not just a sound; it is a physical weight, vibrating in exact, terrifying synchronization with the frantic rhythm of my own pulse. The air pressure in the room plummets so fast my ears pop. Every nerve ending in my body stands on edge, drawn toward the glowing metal like iron dust to a magnet.

The nine jagged runes etched into the rim of the housing ignite. My back-door code. My signature.

From the blinding epicenter of the core, an audio-kinetic playback triggers. It is the master authentication protocol, designed to awaken only when the engine redlines under the biometric proximity of its creator.

The voice that fills the cavernous bay is not a digitized synthetic tone.

    It is mine.

It is my voice, calm, cold, and stripped entirely of the rough, street-level rasp I have worn as a smuggler for a decade. The sound of it freezes the blood in my veins.

Protocol Alpha engaged, my voice echoes over the roaring alarms, vibrating through the steel bulkheads. The caloric yield of a true name is the only energy dense enough to sustain perpetual combustion. The harvest is necessary. Veyra, you must wipe my identity from the archives and from your own mind.

I stagger backward, my spine hitting the heavy iron blast door. The air leaves my lungs.

If the warlords capture me, they capture the master cipher, the recording continues, the ruthless logic of the words slicing through the chaos of the room. I will design the harvest. I will build the engine. Then you will erase me. I will plant a false revenge imperative in my own mind—a fabricated desire to kill the Regent of the Last Meridian. It is the only psychological drive strong enough to guarantee I will fight my way back to you when the city reaches the edge of the wastes.

The phantom reality I have lived in for ten years shatters into a thousand jagged pieces. Every lie I thought I was telling to infiltrate this court, every piece of fake history I built to survive the under-wastes, was a script I wrote for myself. I am not a nameless thief who broke into a tyrant’s fortress. The invisibility that has haunted me, the agonizing feeling that the world refused to see me, was a cage I locked myself inside to protect the ultimate weapon.

I stare at my trembling hands. I suddenly see the invisible, indelible blood of a hundred thousand harvested citizens coating my fingers. I built the slaughterhouse. I drafted the mathematics of their erasure.

Veyra steps into the blinding blue light of the core.

She does not look like a tyrant whose empire is crumbling. She looks like a woman who has carried the weight of a rotting sky for a decade, finally allowed to set it down. The heavy silver crown on her brow pulses violently, burning a fresh, agonizing year from her lifespan right before my eyes, darkening the stark white streak at her temple, smoothing the lines of exhaustion around her mouth. She burns her own life to hold onto the single memory she refused to let my command erase.

"I kept it running," Veyra whispers. The absolute devastation in her dark eyes strips away the last of my defenses. "Just like you asked me to. I took their names. I took the hatred of the entire city. I became the monster of the Last Meridian, and I kept this engine moving so there would be a world left when your script finally brought you home."

The truth is a kinetic strike that breaks my reality in half. The great engine beneath our feet screams for its fuel, a starving beast waiting to be fed by the hands of its master. The greatest villain on this train is not the woman standing in front of me, bleeding her own youth into a piece of silver just to remember the girl she loved.

The monster is the ghost I erased myself to become.
