Where forbidden tales are told.

I am still holding the open ledger when the perimeter alarms begin to scream.

The sound is a high, mechanical shrieking that vibrates straight through the stone floor and rattles the surgical trays. Above us, the heavy, synchronized thud of dozens of military boots hits the main courtyard. The containment wards of the Collegium are not breaking; they are being manually dismantled from the outside.

Dr. Edrin Vale jolts awake at the desk.

He blinks, the narcotic haze of exhaustion and our shared intimacy instantly vanishing. His gray eyes snap to the iron doors, then to me. He stops. He sees the heavy leather-bound journal in my hands. He sees the page detailing the primer sequence, the marrow-rot, the exact dates he seeded the academy’s own students.

The silence between us is sudden and absolute, heavier than the alarms blaring above.

"You brought the sickness inside," I say. My voice does not sound like my own. It is flat, hollowed out.

Vale does not reach for the book. He slowly stands up from the desk. The pale, petrified stone jutting from his lower ribs—the exact mirror of my own mutilation—catches the dim emergency light.

"The Council was secretly stockpiling weaponized strains from the Capital," Vale says, his tone perfectly even, a clinical defense. "They were waiting for a stable human frame to pour them into. The only way to expose the stockpile, to force the military inspectorate to cross the Collegium’s threshold, was to trigger a localized event that the academics could not cover up."

He speaks of an outbreak like it is a mathematical equation.

"You infected your own students to bait a trap," I say, taking a step back. The petrified ridge on my side drags at my posture, a heavy, dead weight. "And you needed someone to take the fall. Someone strong enough to act as the ultimate containment unit when you finally pulled the plague out to prove your point."

Vale steps toward me, his scarred hands rising. "Tomas—"

The heavy iron doors of the dissection theater are blown completely off their hinges.

Smoke and pulverized stone flood the room. Adjutant Thorne strides through the debris, flanked by a dozen heavily armed military science operatives. Behind them, clutching their pristine white coats, are the senior members of the Collegium Council.

Thorne’s eyes sweep the room. They drag over the twelve unconscious, cured students on the floor, over Vale’s half-dressed, scarred form, and finally land on me. He smiles. It is a terrifying, sterile expression.

"Fascinating," Thorne murmurs, the leather of his gloves stretching tightly over his knuckles. "The perimeter sensors recorded a mass extraction, but no fatalities. You survived the apex strain, Captain Rell. Just as your original combat file predicted."

The floor drops out from under me.

"His original file?" Vale asks, his voice sharpening, shifting his weight to put himself between me and the soldiers.

"Oh, come now, Dr. Vale," one of the Council members sneers, stepping out from behind Thorne’s bulk. "You didn’t truly believe the high command sent an inspector just to audit your ledger? Captain Rell was deployed because his skin survived the sigil-trials three years ago. He was always meant to be the final vessel for the courtyard stockpile. You merely did us the favor of testing his capacity."

The military did not send me to investigate a rogue anatomist. They sent me to be the jar he poured the poison into.

I look at Vale. His shoulders are rigid. He is staring at Thorne, but the realization is already washing over his face. He engineered the outbreak to expose the Council, but the Council used his outbreak to condition their ultimate weapon.

And then, the final, crushing piece of the architecture clicks into place in my mind.

I look at the petrified stone anchoring my ribs. I look at the man who refused to touch the unconsenting, the man who demanded I speak the words of surrender before he shared the curse.

No physical or magical transfer shall be initiated upon the Inspector’s body without spoken, conscious, and revocable consent.

I had written the law. Edrin Vale had simply found a way to make me agree.

He didn’t share the curse to save me. He shared it to anchor me to this basement. He gave me the illusion of absolute autonomy, he gave me safety, he stripped off my armor in the dark, all so I would willingly open my veins and act as the anvil for his mass extraction. Every touch, every ragged breath, every quiet reassurance was a precise, calculated mechanism to secure a weaponized consent. He used my own boundaries to manipulate me into the exact position he required.

I am not a man to him. I am just a different kind of patient on the slate slab.

"Step away from the asset, Doctor," Thorne commands, drawing a sigil-pen from his dark uniform.

Vale does not move. The necrotic black veins on his arms begin to pulse. The air warps with the violent, chemical reek of silver-alcohol as the forty-nine curses in his blood prepare to breach the surface. "You will not take him."

"We don’t have to," the Council member says, raising a small, crystalline ward-key.

The academic does not aim the key at me. He aims it at Vale’s desk. The ward-key flashes, and the privacy seals on the desk shatter completely. The open ledger in my hand glows with a sickly light, projecting Vale’s meticulously dated outbreak schedules onto the stone wall for the entire military detachment to see.

The proof of his treason, undeniable and absolute.

"Dr. Edrin Vale," the Council member announces, his voice echoing in the dead silence. "For the deliberate deployment of lethal curses upon the student body, your academic license is permanently revoked. You are stripped of all localized protections."

The academic twists the crystalline key.

The stone floor beneath Vale erupts with blinding white sigils. Shackles of solid, weaponized light snap around Vale’s ankles and wrists, dragging him violently to his knees. The ambient magic in the room is instantly suffocated. The black chitinous armor trying to form on his neck dissolves into ash. His magic is neutralized.

Thorne steps past the kneeling, shackled anatomist. He stops directly in front of me, holding out a pair of heavy, iron-lined restraints.

"Captain Rell," Thorne says smoothly. "Your audit is concluded. It is time to return to the laboratory."
