Where forbidden tales are told.

The inner sanctum of the basalt spire is absolutely silent. The heavy iron doors shut behind us, cutting off the wails of the Midnight Market and the metallic scent of the executed rebel shadow.

I drop the magistrate’s crystal core onto the black obsidian table. My hands are shaking. I grip the edge of the stone to steady myself, but the beast inside me is thrashing against my ribs, tearing at the fresh, blackened scar where the shadow’s final desire burned into my flesh. The pain is blinding. It feels like my chest cavity is packed with shattered glass and freezing water.

I do not hear Lien Chau approach. Without her shadow, her footsteps lack their usual absolute symmetry, making her silent in the dark.

"Let me see it," she says.

I flinch as her fingers brush the heavy fabric of my dark tunic. "Don’t touch me, Magistrate. Your light will only agitate the wound."

"I said, let me see it," she repeats, her voice stripped of the Sun Court’s ceremonial lacquer. There is no command in it, only a quiet, unyielding weight.

She steps into my personal space. I am taller, broader, entirely lethal, but I do not push her away. I let her push the heavy wool of my tunic off my left shoulder. The cold air of the room hits the raw, weeping brand on my ribs. Lien Chau’s breath catches. Under the bruised purple light filtering through the high archways, the scar is a jagged, glowing lattice of dying rot. And around it, layering my side, are dozens of older, silvered scars.

Her fingers hover over the damaged skin. Her living heat radiates against my freezing flesh.

"You do not just execute them," she murmurs, her thumb tracing the edge of an old silver mark, mapping the violence I have swallowed. "You filter the sickness. You take their starvation into your own body so it does not spread. Every single time."

"It is the cost of absolute control," I say, my voice grating. I look down at her. Her bruised-sky eyes are wide, processing the reality of the monster she came to judge.

"It is the cost of not wanting to be left alone," she corrects softly.

The observation cuts deeper than any blade. The air pressure in the room shifts. The distance between us suddenly feels impossible to tolerate.

I reach up and capture her wrist. Her pulse beats frantically against my thumb.

"You are a magistrate of the sun," I say, the feral resonance bleeding into my words. "You are supposed to judge the dark, not bandage it."

"Then I resign my post for the night," Lien Chau breathes.

She steps closer, completely erasing the gap between us. The sheer, overwhelming heat of her body presses against mine. The beast roars, demanding I consume, but I force it down. I will not be a monster right now. I will be human. My claws retract, melting into blunt fingernails. I slide my hands up her arms, feeling the fine tremble in her muscles.

She fears engulfment. She fears being swallowed by the dark, losing her identity to the crush of another’s gravity. I know this. I feel her terror mingling with her desire, a sharp, intoxicating ozone tang.

I back her slowly against the obsidian table.

"Look at me," I command, my voice a low vibration against her mouth. "I am not swallowing you. You are right here. Tell me to stop, Lien Chau, and I will step away."

She grips the lapels of my tunic, her knuckles white. "Don’t you dare."

She pulls me down. Her mouth is frantic, tasting of sterile sunlight and desperate, grounding reality. The collision shatters the last of my control. I kiss her back with a hunger that has nothing to do with souls and everything to do with the woman in my arms. I lift her by the waist, setting her on the edge of the stone table.

The white and gold silks of her uniform are a barrier. I dismantle them. I pull the heavy sash loose, letting the immaculate fabric fall away to reveal the frantic rise and fall of her chest. Her skin is flushed, burning hot against the freezing temperature of my domain. I shed my own tunic, letting the dark wool pool on the floor.

When my bare chest presses against hers, the contrast is a physical shock. Ice and fire. She gasps, arching into the touch, her hands sliding up my spine to anchor herself in my hair.

I map the lines of her body with my mouth, tracing the collarbone, the frantic pulse at her throat, the soft, trembling curve of her waist. Every touch is deliberate, a grounding anchor proving she is entirely herself, entirely separate, yet completely mine in this single fraction of time. I part her thighs, stepping into the cradle of her hips.

"Ta Uyen," she gasps, her voice fracturing.

I sink my fingers into her hips, holding her steady. I guide myself against her, watching her face as I slowly press inside. She cries out, a sharp, beautiful sound that echoes off the vaulted ceiling. She arches, her nails digging half-moons into my shoulders. I freeze, letting her adjust to the stretch, the absolute, overwhelming fullness of the connection.

"I have you," I whisper against her jaw.

She nods frantically, pulling my hips forward. I begin to move. The rhythm is deep and punishingly slow. The friction generates a heat that threatens to burn the remaining shadows from the room. Lien Chau falls apart beneath me, her breath coming in ragged sobs, her body trembling with every thrust. She is not losing herself; she is finding exactly where her edges meet mine. When she shatters, her cry tears through the silence, her muscles clamping down on me so hard I see white. I follow a heartbeat later, burying my face in her neck, surrendering the crown, the realm, and the beast to the sheer, terrifying weight of her embrace.

For a long time, there is only the sound of our ragged breathing in the cold air.

I pull back, smoothing the damp hair from her forehead. She looks entirely ruined, entirely beautiful. The rigid magistrate is gone.

I turn and pick up the crystallized core of her shadow from the table. It pulses with a faint, corrupted gold.

"Sit up," I tell her quietly.

She obeys, pulling a sheet of dark velvet around her shoulders. She watches as I hold the core between my palms. The beast is sated, asleep. My mind is entirely clear. I do not use my jaws. I use my hands. I press my thumbs into the center of the crystal and exert a terrifying, surgical pressure.

I pull the starvation out. It manifests as a writhing, oily black thread of rot. I strip it from the pure gold of her soul, inch by agonizing inch, until the rot snaps. I crush the sickness in my fist, letting it turn to ash.

The crystal in my hand glows with a brilliant, unblemished sunlight. I have cured the leader of the rebellion without eating her.

I place the healed core into Lien Chau’s lap. "It is clean. You can take it back. You can go home whole."

Lien Chau stares at the glowing stone. Her eyes fill with tears. The profound weight of the surrender—my refusal to cage her, my refusal to consume her—hits her all at once. She reaches for her discarded white robes, her hands trembling so violently she can barely grip the silk.

As she pulls the fabric up, a hidden pocket catches on the edge of the obsidian table.

A heavy scroll falls to the floor.

The impact cracks the wax seal. The parchment unrolls, revealing a block of text forged in blinding, sterile Sun Court magic.

I step forward, the residual warmth of her skin still clinging to mine, and look down.

It is not an arrest warrant.

Order of Absolute Erasure, the glowing letters read. Target: The Eclipse Eater. Authorization to detonate the dawn-core upon proximity.

The air in the room instantly drops to freezing. The gentle intimacy we just built solidifies into ice. She did not come here to arrest a thief. She came here carrying a bomb meant to annihilate me and my entire realm.

Lien Chau freezes, the white silk clutched to her chest. "Ta Uyen, wait. I can explain—"

Before the words fully leave her mouth, the high, arched windows of the sanctum explode with a blinding, unnatural glare. It is not the purple glow of the eclipse. It is a violent, searing flare of golden magic detonating high in the sky of the Underworld.

    The Sun Court’s invasion signal.
