The heavy iron shears slip from my grip.

They hit the painted cedar floorboards with a dull, heavy thud that echoes through the vast, greyscale rafters of the Night Parade. I do not look down at them. I keep my eyes locked on Aoi. The silver master line—the thread that would have severed this pocket dimension and returned me to the waking, lying capital—hums faintly in the space between us, entirely uncut.

I reach into my robe, my fingers brushing the leather spine of my notebook. The instinct to pull it out, to document the exact angle of her chin and the terrifying, beautiful stillness of her posture, is a phantom ache in my wrist. I force my hand to drop empty to my side. I do not want to record her. I want to experience her without the lens of my own broken paranoia.

Aoi stares at the fallen shears. For a fraction of a second, the absolute, architectural control that governs her every movement fractures. Her dark eyes lift to mine, and the apex predator of the woven dark softens into something devastatingly human.

    She steps across the distance.

There is no silk now. No glowing threads, no chitinous shifting in the shadows, no monstrous appendages hovering in the ink-washed dark. There is only the woman. Aoi reaches up, her bare hands framing my jaw. Her skin is impossibly warm against the freezing ambient air of the paper world.

"You did not cut it," she whispers, her thumb tracing the line of my cheekbone.

"I am exactly where I chose to be," I answer.

She exhales, a ragged, uneven sound that strips away the last of the court musician’s rigid facade. She pulls my mouth down to hers. The kiss is not measured or polite; it is a collision. I taste plum blossoms and the sharp, metallic tang of adrenaline. My hands find her waist, pulling her flush against me. The heavy layers of her dark silk robes are an infuriating barrier. I drag the fabric off her shoulders, the expensive material pooling in the monochrome shadows at our feet.

She is entirely human, perfectly formed, and burning with a heat that makes my pulse hammer in my throat. I shed my own layered garments, kicking them aside until there is nothing between us but skin.

Aoi pushes me back against the smooth paper partition of the floating pavilion. The wood groans under my weight. She follows me down, her thigh pressing between mine, the friction sending a violent shock of heat straight to my core. I map the dip of her spine, the soft, heavy weight of her breasts pressing against my chest, the frantic thrum of her heartbeat under my palm. My clan spent years trying to scrub my mind empty, to make me a hollow vessel, but they cannot erase this. They cannot reach the blistering, undeniable reality of her mouth trailing down my neck, her teeth scraping lightly against my collarbone.

She swings a leg over my hips, straddling me. She looks down at me, her dark hair falling in heavy curtains around our faces, creating a private, shadowed tent. Her hands slide down my chest, her fingernails leaving faint, flushed crescents on my skin—physical evidence that I am here, that I am hers, that this is real.

"Look at me," she commands softly.

I hold her gaze as she guides me inside her. The breath tears from my throat. It is a slow, agonizingly tight slide that leaves me completely unmoored. She sinks down fully, taking all of me, her head throwing back as a sharp gasp escapes her lips. I grip her hips, my thumbs pressing deep into the soft flesh of her waist, anchoring her to me as she begins to move. The rhythm is relentless, perfectly matched to the frantic, erratic pounding of my own heart. The friction is a localized fire, burning away every lie I have ever been forced to swallow.

I thrust upward, chasing the profound, heavy friction, entirely consumed by the slick heat of her body and the desperate sounds she makes into the quiet air. My hands slide up her back, tangling in her hair, pulling her down for a bruised, open-mouthed kiss as the tension in my spine snaps. I completely unravel beneath her, a violent, shuddering release that empties my lungs. A heartbeat later, Aoi cries out, her nails digging into my shoulders as her body clenches tightly around mine, shivering through her own climax.

We collapse against each other on the ink-stained floorboards, our chests heaving, slick with sweat.

I pull her into my arms, burying my face in the damp hair at the nape of her neck. Above us, the massive, glowing chrysalises hang peacefully in the rafters. The silver threads hum with a low, steady frequency. The beasts born of the court’s deception are contained. The capital is safe, locked away in its own ignorance, while the two of us lie hidden in the quiet belly of the Night Parade.

I close my eyes, feeling the steady rise and fall of her breathing against my chest. This works, I think. We can stay in the shadows. We can manage the rot of the waking world from here. I don’t need the notebook anymore. I have her.

A sudden, sharp tearing sound echoes across the pavilion.

I snap my eyes open. The paper wall adjacent to us buckles inward. The greyscale ink of the floorboards begins to smear, bleeding upward like water hitting dry parchment.

Aoi sits up abruptly, snatching her silk robe from the floor and pulling it over her bare shoulders. The ambient glow of the suspended chrysalises stutters, flashing violently. The silver master thread anchored above us is vibrating so hard it is beginning to fray.

"What is happening?" I ask, scrambling for my discarded clothes.

"The architecture," Aoi says, her voice tight with a sudden, absolute terror I have never heard from her before. She looks up at the buckling ceiling. "Someone in the waking court is telling a lie. A lie so massive, so structurally devastating, that the ink cannot contain it."

The floating stairs leading to our platform shatter into black dust.

"The scroll," Aoi whispers, grabbing my wrist as the pavilion floor tilts violently beneath us. "The Emperor is closing the scroll."

A deafening roar tears through the dimension as the negative space of the courtyard collapses inward. The quiet intimacy of the shadows is violently ripped away.

The ink swallows the light, and the paper world crushes down on top of us.
