Where forbidden tales are told.

Eirik answers my question by opening the next door.

The chamber beyond contains no books, only weather. Snow hangs motionless above a black floor. The temperature changes according to whatever emotion enters strongest: my suspicion sharpens the air; his shame lowers it until our breath crystallizes.

“This room cannot be commanded,” he says. “It can only be answered.”

The thermal tether between us pulls tight. To cross, we must balance our heat—not let one person give while the other merely takes. We establish the rule aloud. Either can close the pact. Neither enters a memory uninvited.

    I open first.

Summer floods the chamber. I see Sable-at-nine running through grass where my erased village once stood. Eirik receives the smell of apricots, river mud, and ink warming on a teacher’s desk. In return he gives me his only summer: a battlefield hospital where he held ice against his brother’s fever and discovered cold could preserve what love could not cure.

    The room warms to rain.

Eirik’s frozen heart cracks beneath my palm. Not melts—cracks. Grief crosses his face without permission, followed by relief so naked he looks away.

    “Stay,” I say.

    He does.

Our kiss is careful, a meeting between two climates neither of us owns. The pact carries no command, only questions answered one breath at a time. For a moment the moving glacier stops groaning. Shelves outside align. The buried wars fall silent.

Then the summer page in my satchel sings the wrong melody.

I know every surviving song of my people. This one uses a marching rhythm written twenty years after our village vanished.

    Eirik hears it too.

Before I can examine the page, the chamber temperature spikes. The glacier splits from floor to ceiling. Meltwater punches through the wall and tears us apart.

Eirik catches my wrist, but the thermal tether burns white between us. Above, millions of frozen memories begin falling from their shelves.

The stolen summer is not thawing the library.

It is giving the library a false past—and history is breaking itself to make the lie come true.
