Where forbidden tales are told.

I run toward the deepest crevasse.

If I freeze myself below the library’s memory line, the page cannot complete its testimony. It is an elegant solution of the sort tyrants and smugglers admire: one body exchanged for thousands.

    Eirik follows.

At the brink, I begin returning names. I speak every forbidden nation, village, and family I carried in hidden pages. The library answers by restoring their shelves. Forgotten people appear inside the glacier not as armies but as witnesses able to contradict the false summer.

Wardens surround us. They demand Eirik seal the shelves and preserve imperial chronology.

    He removes the ice crown.

The object contains every memory he surrendered to rule without hesitation: his mother’s face, his first love, the sound of his brother laughing before the fever. He strikes it against the crevasse wall.

    The crown breaks.

Heat and grief explode through the library. Eirik falls to his knees, suddenly human enough to bleed. His authority over winter vanishes, but the released memories give the witnesses warmth. They step from their shelves and begin telling history in conflicting voices.

No single testimony can now start the first war.

The false page tears free from my skin.

Above us, however, the glacier loses its ruler’s cold. Twelve preserved battlefields thaw at once. Cannons, cavalry, old rage, and unfinished orders rain through the ceiling.

Eirik reaches me without a crown, his hands shaking from sensation.

“I cannot stop winter,” he says.

“Good. We need a filter, not another prison.”

We join hands as the first frozen army falls toward us.
