We flee through collapsing centuries.
Meltwater carries soldiers from twelve preserved wars into the same corridor. They awaken believing their enemies still live. Arrows cross rifle fire. Cavalry charges through a revolution that has not happened yet.
Eirik raises walls of ice to separate the armies. Each wall costs another beat of his thawing heart. I use smuggler marks to redirect civilians through shelves labeled as fiction—the only passages history ignores.
Library wardens corner us at the Chronology Well. They display the identities ruined by my counterfeit memories: a woman who bought a childhood with a living mother and forgot the mother who raised her; a prince who purchased courage from a hero and started a needless war.
My lies were not harmless alternatives. They occupied space inside real people.
Eirik does not defend me.
The summer page opens by itself. Its ink rearranges into my handwriting—older, steadier, written by a future Sable who survived the coming spring. She planted the false summer to force the library open because every peaceful attempt failed.
The page shows what happens if it melts completely: I become the witness whose testimony resurrects the first massacre. Twelve armies recognize one another, and the civil wars begin again with modern weapons.
Eirik looks at me as if I am both woman and catastrophe.
“Freeze me with it,” I say.
“That would preserve the trigger forever.”
“Then erase me.”
His old answer would have been yes.
He closes his fist instead. “No more peace purchased by deleting a person.”
The decision comes too late to save us from the page. It melts into my skin. Every soldier in the library turns toward me, recognizing the false witness they need.
Through the tether I feel Eirik’s terror—not that I will destroy his empire, but that history will take me before he can choose me outside it.
The glacier announces my new title in every archive:
SABLE KEST — AUTHOR OF THE FIRST WAR.
