The sanctuary was a fortress woven from living shadow and ancient ironwood, buried so deeply in the Whispering Woods that the air tasted of frost and forgotten centuries.
Varek hit the heavy timber doors with enough force to splinter a lesser barrier, his massive wings flaring backward to arrest their momentum. He carried Nessa entirely off her feet, his armor scored and smoking from the residual magic of the vault traps, his breathing ragged. He kicked the doors shut behind them, instantly dragging his bleeding palm across the runic lock mechanism embedded in the wood.
A heavy, resonant thrum vibrated through the floorboards as the blood-wards activated, sealing the cabin in a dome of impenetrable, cloaking magic.
Only then did Varek let his wings collapse. They folded heavily against his back, the leathery joints trembling with absolute exhaustion. He set Nessa down on her feet, his hands lingering on her waist for a fraction of a second longer than necessary before he forced himself to step back.
"We are secure," he rasped, his voice rough as gravel. "The wards are tied to my bloodline. The Vault-Keepers cannot track us here, and the court does not know this place exists."
Nessa stumbled backward, her spine hitting the edge of a heavy, fur-draped mahogany table. The cabin was dimly lit by a hearth fire that had flared to life the moment they crossed the threshold, casting dancing orange shadows across walls lined with ancient tomes and tarnished weaponry.
Her heart was hammering a frantic, violent rhythm against her ribs. They had spent the last hour running through a subterranean labyrinth of traps, hunted by mechanical nightmares, only to burst into the freezing night sky with Varek flying them blind through a magical storm.
She looked at him. The tyrant of Nightglass Court looked entirely ruined.
His dark leather coat was shredded at the shoulder. A jagged laceration ran down his left bicep, bleeding sluggishly, the blood hissing slightly as it reacted to the ambient magic in the air. The perfect, aristocratic mask of cold indifference he wore in the throne room was gone, replaced by a raw, predatory fatigue.
"You’re bleeding," Nessa said. Her voice shook, betraying the adrenaline still crashing through her system.
Varek glanced down at his arm with mild annoyance, as if the wound were a minor inconvenience rather than a deep, tearing gash. "It is nothing. The silver from the trap slows the healing, but it will close."
He moved toward the hearth, unbuckling the heavy leather cuirass of his armor. He cast it aside, the metal clattering loudly against the stone floor. Beneath it, his dark tunic was torn and stained. He gripped the hem and pulled it over his head, leaving him bare from the waist up.
Nessa’s breath hitched in her throat.
His torso was a map of violent history. Faded scars crisscrossed his chest and abdomen, pale lines against his skin, evidence of a lifetime spent fighting for a throne built on lies. The massive, powerful musculature of his back shifted as his wings flexed, the dark appendages catching the firelight. But it was the fresh wound on his arm that drew her forensic sight.
Even without activating her magic, she could see the faint, sickly silver glow of the trap’s poison eating at the edges of the laceration.
"Sit down," Nessa commanded, her professional instincts overriding her terror.
Varek paused, looking over his shoulder at her. His violet eyes were dark, tracking her movements with an intense, unreadable focus.
"I said sit down, Varek." She pushed off the table, her ruined silk gown rustling around her legs. She walked to a small iron basin resting on a side table and grabbed a clean linen cloth. "I am an investigator, but I also have medical training. If that silver reaches your bloodstream, your immortal healing won’t matter."
For a moment, he looked as though he might refuse, the proud, stubborn tyrant warring with the battered man. But then, slowly, he lowered himself onto the edge of a heavy armchair near the fire, resting his elbows on his knees.
Nessa knelt beside him. She took the vial of dark, viscous salve he had used on her collarbone earlier, which he had tossed onto the table. Her hands were still trembling slightly as she uncorked it.
"This will burn," she warned softly.
"I am accustomed to burning," he murmured, his gaze dropping to her face.
She poured a small amount of the salve onto the linen and pressed it firmly against the gash on his bicep. Varek didn’t flinch. He didn’t make a sound. The only indication that he felt anything at all was the sudden, sharp flex of his jaw and the way his massive hand gripped the wooden armrest of the chair, the wood groaning in protest.
The proximity between them was suddenly suffocating.
The adrenaline of their escape was fading, leaving something much more dangerous in its wake. In the quiet, fire-lit cabin, the crushing weight of the Court, the trials, and the memory-vaults felt a thousand miles away. Here, there were no spies. There were no assassins. There was only the heat of the fire, the smell of ozone and jasmine, and the heavy, invisible tether connecting them, humming with a warm, frantic energy.
Nessa focused desperately on the wound, cleaning the edges, refusing to look up. She could feel the heat radiating from his bare chest. She could hear the slow, steady intake of his breath, feeling the slight expansion of his ribs inches from her face.
"Why did you throw yourself over me in the vault?" she asked quietly, her voice barely carrying over the crackle of the hearth. "When the trap went off. You took the brunt of the shrapnel to shield me."
"You are my truth-knife," Varek said, though the words lacked their usual cold authority. "You are essential to the trials."
"Don’t lie to me," Nessa snapped, finally looking up, her eyes flashing with defiance. She met his violet gaze, refusing to back down. "I saw the way you looked at me. I felt your hands on me in the dark. A king protects an asset. A man throws himself on a bomb."
Varek’s breath hitched. The air in the cabin grew instantly heavier, thick with an electric, undeniable friction.
He moved so fast she didn’t have time to blink. His hand released the armrest and shot out, his large, calloused fingers wrapping around her wrist. He didn’t hurt her, but his grip was absolute. He pulled her forward, off her knees, forcing her to stand between his parted thighs as he sat in the chair.
Nessa gasped, her hands instinctively coming up to rest flat against his bare chest to steady herself. His skin was scorching hot. Her heart vaulted into her throat as she stared down into his face, entirely captured by the raw, predatory hunger blazing in his eyes.
"You want the truth, investigator?" Varek growled, his voice a low, vibrating rumble that sent a shockwave straight through her core. "The truth is that I am a monster who dragged you into a nightmare. The truth is that I should lock you in a tower, use your sight to secure my throne, and never let you see the sun again."
His free hand came up, his fingers sliding into the hair at the nape of her neck, tilting her head back slightly.
"But the absolute truth," he whispered, his thumb dragging across her lower lip, "is that the moment you offered your own blood to that altar to spare a servant, you shattered every defense I have left. The truth is that I am entirely, terrifyingly consumed by you."
Nessa stopped breathing.
The confession was a physical blow, tearing down the last of her analytical walls. She had spent twelve years closing herself off, building a fortress of logic and cold forensics to survive a world that took her sister. But standing here, held by a tyrant who was bleeding for her, the fortress crumbled into dust.
"Varek," she breathed, her fingers curling into the hard muscle of his chest.
"Listen to me," Varek said, his tone turning fiercely serious, his violet eyes locking onto hers with a devastating clarity. "The tether binds your location to mine. It does not bind your will. If I touch you now, Nessa, it is not as your captor. It is not a command, and it is not a consequence of this cursed magic."
He slowly released her wrist, holding both of his hands up, palms open, a gesture of absolute surrender from a creature built for war.
"Tell me to step back," he commanded softly, his chest heaving. "Give me the word, and I will cross this room, and I will not touch you again. The choice is yours. Only yours."
Nessa looked at him. She saw the lethal danger he represented. She knew the logical, safe choice. But logic had nothing to do with the inferno burning in her veins, or the desperate, aching pull she felt toward the broken king hiding beneath the armor.
She didn’t speak the word.
Instead, she stepped forward, closing the final inch between them. She reached down, her hands framing his face, her thumbs tracing the sharp, aristocratic cut of his cheekbones.
"Don’t step back," she whispered.
Varek let out a sound that was half-groan, half-prayer.
He stood up, capturing her mouth in a searing, devastating kiss. It was completely different from the desperate collision in the vault. This was deliberate. This was a claim. His mouth moved over hers with a hungry, consuming rhythm, his tongue sweeping past her lips, tasting her, devouring her breath.
Nessa melted against him, a soft, involuntary moan slipping from her throat. Her arms wrapped around his neck, holding on as he wrapped his massive arms around her waist, lifting her clean off the floor.
He carried her across the cabin, his mouth never leaving hers, their bodies pressed flush together. He laid her down on the heavy furs of the large, wrought-iron bed in the corner of the room, following her down immediately.
His wings flared out, forming a dark, protective canopy over them, shutting out the rest of the world until there was only the heat of the fire and the heat of his skin.
"Are you sure?" Varek asked against her lips, his voice ragged, giving her one final out, though his hands were trembling with the effort of holding back.
"Yes," Nessa breathed, pulling him down to her. "God, yes, Varek. Please."
The ruined silk of her gown was dispatched with ruthless efficiency, cast aside into the shadows. Varek was a revelation of restraint and power. He didn’t rush. He worshipped her. Every touch of his calloused hands, every sweep of his mouth across her bare skin was designed to unravel her.
He mapped the curves of her body as if she were the most precious, fragile artifact in his kingdom. His mouth trailed burning kisses down her jaw, her throat, lingering on the sensitive skin of her breasts, drawing choked, breathless gasps from her lips. The friction of his heavy, muscled body against her soft skin sent sparks of electricity racing along her nerves.
When he finally settled himself between her thighs, the tension was unbearable, a bowstring pulled back to its absolute limit.
He caught her gaze, his violet eyes dark and completely unguarded. He linked his fingers with hers, pinning her hands gently to the furs beside her head.
"Mine," he whispered, a vow spoken without magic, but with absolute conviction.
He pushed forward, filling her completely.
Nessa arched off the bed, a sharp gasp tearing from her throat at the sudden, overwhelming sensation. Varek froze instantly, his muscles locking tight.
"Did I hurt you?" he demanded, panic flashing in his eyes.
"No," she gasped, her nails digging into the backs of his hands. "No, Varek. Don’t stop. Move."
He let out a shuddering breath, lowering his forehead to rest against hers, and began to move. The rhythm was slow at first, deep and punishingly deliberate. But as Nessa’s hips rose to meet his thrusts, as her hands broke free to drag down his scarred back, pulling him closer, the restraint shattered.
It became a primal, blinding storm. The physical connection was a mirror of their magical one, a devastating fusion of heat and gravity. Nessa lost herself entirely in the sensory overload—the smell of him, the heavy glide of his sweat-slicked skin, the low, feral sounds he made in the back of his throat.
The world narrowed to the point of contact between them, spiraling tighter and tighter. Nessa’s breath turned into ragged sobs, the pleasure building to a sharp, agonizing peak.
"Varek," she cried out, her eyes flying open, her body bowing upward as the climax hit her like a lightning strike, shattering her completely.
Varek followed her over the edge a second later with a raw, guttural shout, burying his face in the curve of her neck as his body seized, pouring his release into her.
They collapsed together on the furs, their breathing a chaotic symphony in the quiet cabin. Varek rolled to the side, but he refused to let her go, pulling her flush against his side, tucking her head under his chin. His heavy wing draped protectively over her legs, a warm, leathery blanket.
For a long time, neither of them spoke. The afterglow was a profound, heavy peace that Nessa had not felt in twelve years.
Eventually, Varek shifted. He reached out to the bedside table, grabbing a small, silver dagger.
Nessa tensed slightly, but he only gave her a reassuring look. He placed the sharp edge of the blade against the center of his own chest, right over his heart, and pressed. A single drop of crimson blood welled up.
He handed the dagger to her, offering the hilt.
"The tether around your neck is a chain," Varek said softly, his eyes tracing her face. "A coercive lock. I cannot remove it until the trials are over, or the magic will kill us both. But I will not let it be the only thing that binds us."
He reached out, his thumb gently pressing against the spot above her heart.
"Give me a drop of your blood, Nessa," he asked. "Freely. No magic. No coercive rules. Let me swear a true vow to you."
Nessa looked at the blade, then at the man who had just dismantled her entire world in the dark. Without hesitation, she took the dagger. She pricked her own chest, a mirror to his wound.
Varek pressed his chest against hers, skin to skin, blood to blood.
"My life for yours," he whispered, the words echoing with a terrifying, absolute sincerity. "My crown for your safety. I vow this, Nessa Calder. Unbroken."
A faint, golden warmth bloomed between their chests, a feeling entirely different from the harsh, jagged magic of the Court. It was a vow of choice. It was beautiful.
Nessa closed her eyes, burying her face in his chest, finally, truly safe.
The fire had burned down to glowing red embers when Nessa woke.
The cabin was freezing, the chill of the forest seeping through the ironwood walls. Varek was fast asleep beside her, his chest rising and falling in a deep, even rhythm. The exhaustion of the day had finally claimed him, pulling him into a profound slumber.
Nessa shivered, carefully sliding out from under the heavy drape of his wing. She needed water, and she needed something to wear against the biting cold.
She walked quietly across the stone floor, her bare feet making no sound. She spotted Varek’s discarded leather coat near the hearth. It was heavy and lined with fur—perfect to ward off the chill until she could find her own ruined dress.
She picked up the coat, swinging it around her shoulders. As she did, she felt a heavy weight shift in the inner lining.
Nessa paused. She felt along the leather. The magical shrapnel from the vault trap had torn a deep gash through the shoulder of the coat, severing a hidden, interior seam. Slipping her fingers into the tear, she found a concealed pocket.
Her brow furrowed. She pulled out a small, folded piece of heavy parchment.
Curiosity, honed by years of forensic investigation, overrode her hesitation. She walked closer to the dying embers of the fire to catch the light, unfolding the letter.
The text was written in a complex fae cipher, a mess of swirling runes that meant nothing to her mortal eyes. But Nessa was a truth-seeker. She didn’t need to read the language; she could read the intent behind the ink.
She let her magic flare, the veil of the world dropping away.
The runes on the page untangled themselves, the latent magic of the author’s truth translating directly into her mind. It was a correspondence. A status report.
…The diplomatic envoy was eliminated precisely at the border, as instructed. The human authorities have been alerted. The investigator, Calder, has taken the bait and is currently examining the corpse. The scene is set for her extraction…
Nessa stopped breathing.
The room began to spin. The air turned to ash in her lungs.
…The staged murder functioned perfectly to draw her out of the Federal wards. The abduction will proceed tonight. The Court will believe she is a random human captive, shielding her true utility for the trials…
Varek hadn’t stumbled upon her in the morgue. He hadn’t just needed a truth-knife and taken the first one he found. He had orchestrated the entire thing. He had ordered the brutal murder of the fae envoy on her table just to lure her into his trap. The kidnapping, the terror, the collar around her neck—it was all a meticulously calculated, cold-blooded script.
Her hands shook violently as she read the final line of the missive.
…The Oracle has confirmed the timeline. Her prophecies remain absolute. Nightglass will be yours.
Nessa’s stomach violently revolted. She dropped the letter on the table as if it were coated in acid. She backed away, her mind fracturing into a thousand jagged pieces. Every gentle touch, every whispered confession, the blood-vow they had just sworn—it was all built on a foundation of sociopathic manipulation.
She bumped into the coat again, the leather slipping off her shoulder.
As it fell, something else dislodged from the torn, hidden pocket, hitting the stone floor with a heavy, metallic clink.
Nessa looked down.
Resting on the floor was a mask.
It was forged from pure silver, featureless and smooth, designed to cover the upper half of a face. It was the mask of the Oracle, the mysterious seer who had advised the Nightglass throne from the shadows for over a decade.
Nessa stared at it, a cold, creeping horror inching up her spine.
Slowly, she crouched down and picked it up. The metal was freezing against her palm. Without thinking, operating on pure, devastating instinct, she pushed her forensic sight into the silver, looking for the residual magical signature of the person who wore it.
Magic left a fingerprint. A unique resonance tied to the soul.
The mask flared with a blinding, familiar light. It wasn’t the jagged, cold magic of the fae. It was human. And it was a signature Nessa knew better than her own heartbeat. It was the exact, identical resonance of the blood that ran in her own veins.
The signature belonged to her sister, Elara.
The sister who had vanished twelve years ago. The sister Nessa had mourned, had spent her life trying to find, believing her dead or tortured in the dark.
Elara wasn’t dead. She was the Oracle. She had been serving Varek Thorn this entire time.
Varek knew. He knew exactly who Nessa was from the very beginning. He had used her sister’s prophecies to orchestrate her abduction, dragging her into this hell, sleeping with her, making her bleed for his throne.
A ragged, soundless sob tore its way out of Nessa’s throat.
The betrayal was so absolute, so profound, that it bypassed grief entirely and crystallized into pure, blinding, homicidal rage.
She turned away from the table. She walked to her ruined dress, reaching into the pocket. Her fingers closed around the cold, iron handle of her silver surgical scalpel.
The firelight cast long, monstrous shadows across the walls as she walked back to the heavy ironwood bed.
Varek was still asleep, lying on his back, his dark hair messy against the furs. He looked beautiful. He looked vulnerable. He looked like the man who had just promised his life for hers.
Nessa stood over him, the silver mask clutched in her left hand, the scalpel in her right. She looked at the faint, golden glow of the blood-vow they had shared, shining faintly on his chest. A lie. Another magnificent, flawless lie.
Her hand didn’t tremble as she leaned over the sleeping tyrant.
She placed the razor-sharp edge of the iron blade directly against the pulsing, vulnerable skin of his carotid artery.
