Where forbidden tales are told.

A broken promise looked like shattered frost beneath the skin.

Nessa Calder adjusted the harsh, halogen glare of the morgue light, her gloved fingers pressing firmly against the cold, graying sternum of the John Doe on the stainless steel table. To a normal medical examiner, the cause of death would be a mystery—a massive, internal hemorrhage with no clear point of origin, the organs simply shredded as if by invisible shrapnel.

But Nessa was not a normal examiner, and she did not see the world through normal eyes.

She leaned closer, her breath fogging the edge of her protective visor. She let her focus shift, dropping the veil of mundane sight to let her innate forensic magic bleed into her vision. Immediately, the autopsy suite plunged into a muted grayscale, save for the corpse on the table.

Beneath the dead man’s chest, a lattice of jagged, luminescent crimson thorns pulsed with residual magic. They were woven through his ribs, wrapped in a suffocating embrace around his motionless heart. The thorns had grown inward, violently tearing through tissue and muscle the exact second he had broken whatever fae contract he had been foolish enough to sign.

"You promised them something you couldn’t deliver, didn’t you?" Nessa murmured to the empty, tile-lined room. Her voice was flat, devoid of pity.

She picked up a surgical scalpel, scoring a clean, precise line down the center of the chest. She didn’t need to open him up to see the magic, but she needed to document the physical toll for the precinct’s archive. Vows were not metaphors. In the underground economy of the city, where desperate humans traded favors with the hidden fae, words were literal, fatal bindings. A vow of loyalty manifested as an iron collar only the magic-sighted could see. A promise of debt became chains dragging from the soul.

And breaking those vows? It resulted in this. A horrific, organic explosion of the contract’s symbol from the inside out.

Nessa cataloged the fracture points. The thorns were Nightglass magic. The signature was unmistakable: sharp, brutal, and smelling faintly of ozone and crushed black roses, even in death. It was the third Nightglass-related fatality on her table this month.

She reached for her recorder, pressing the button with the back of a bloody glove. "Subject three. Male, late thirties. Cause of death: systemic internal lacerations due to a ruptured blood-oath. Origin of magic: Nightglass Court. The structural integrity of the thorns suggests a mid-level enforcer, possibly a—"

The temperature in the morgue plummeted thirty degrees in a single second.

Nessa’s breath plumed in the sudden, freezing air. The halogen lights flickered, buzzing like dying wasps, before snapping out entirely. Emergency backup generators kicked in a moment later, bathing the stainless steel room in a sickly, pulsing red glow.

She didn’t freeze. Twelve years of living with a hollowed-out chest, of knowing exactly what monstrous things lurked in the shadows since her sister vanished into them, had burned the panic out of her instincts. Nessa dropped the recorder, her hand snapping instantly to the heavy, iron-forged bone saw resting on the surgical tray.

Shadows detached themselves from the corners of the room. They didn’t just lengthen; they bled upward, defying gravity, pooling into a solid, towering mass at the foot of the autopsy table.

"A mid-level enforcer," a voice resonated from the darkness. It was a sound that vibrated in the marrow of Nessa’s bones, dark and smooth as obsidian glass, layered with an ancient, predatory arrogance. "Your analytical skills are profoundly insulting, investigator."

The shadows peeled back like a velvet curtain, revealing the nightmare standing in her locked morgue.

    Varek Thorn.

Nessa had seen sketches. She had read the forbidden, redacted files in the deepest vaults of the human arcane division. But ink on paper could not capture the sheer, suffocating gravity of the tyrant of Nightglass Court.

He was devastatingly tall, clad in seamlessly tailored dark leather and armor that seemed to absorb the red emergency lights. A pair of massive, leathery wings rested folded behind his broad shoulders—not the delicate, iridescent wings of the Seelie, but brutal, jagged things that looked forged from night sky and razor wire. His face was a study in lethal, aristocratic angles: high cheekbones, a sharp jaw, and eyes the terrifying, luminous violet of a dying star.

He moved toward her, the silence of his footfalls entirely at odds with his size.

"Stay exactly where you are," Nessa commanded, gripping the iron bone saw, aiming the serrated edge toward him. Iron was toxic to most fae. She hoped to god the tyrant was not immune. "You’re in a federal quarantine zone. The wards on this building will trigger a lethal arcane back-blast if you take another step."

Varek didn’t stop. He didn’t even slow down. He merely tilted his head, a dark, mocking amusement curling the corner of his mouth. He stepped directly through the invisible tripwire of her wards. A violent spark of blue energy snapped against his chest, but he simply brushed it away like a speck of dust, leaving a faint scent of burning ozone in the air.

"Human wards," he murmured, his violet eyes locking onto hers. "How quaint. Like building a fence of twigs to keep out a hurricane."

He rounded the autopsy table. The sheer physical presence of him was a suffocating pressure in the room, making it hard for Nessa to draw breath. The air crackled with raw, unbridled power—the kind of magic that bent reality, that forced words into chains.

"What do you want?" she demanded, refusing to back away, though every survival instinct screamed at her to run. She kept the iron blade steady. "If you’re here to silence the investigation on this man, you’re too late. The files are already uploaded."

"I do not care about the carrion on your table," Varek said dismissively, barely glancing at the corpse. He stopped mere inches from the tip of her weapon. "I am here for the woman who can read the marrow of a broken promise."

He moved with a speed that defied physics. Before Nessa’s brain could register the shift in space, Varek’s hand lashed out. He didn’t grab the weapon; he bypassed it entirely, his large, leather-clad fingers wrapping firmly around her wrist.

A jolt of pure, searing heat shot up her arm. It wasn’t pain, exactly, but an intense, magnetic shock that made her gasp. His grip was an iron vise, immovable, yet strangely carefully modulated—restraining her without snapping her fragile human bones.

"Let go of me," she snarled, twisting her arm violently.

Varek easily absorbed her struggle, stepping deep into her personal space. He was so close she could feel the heat radiating from his chest, could smell the intoxicating, dangerous scent of him—night-blooming jasmine, cold stone, and violence. He looked down at her with a terrifying intensity, his gaze mapping the furious contours of her face.

"Nessa Calder," he breathed, tasting her name on his tongue as if assessing its vintage. "Twenty-seven. Orphaned by the veil. A prodigy in the morbid science of dead oaths. You look at a corpse and see the exact shape of the lie that killed them."

"It’s not a parlor trick," she hissed, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. She refused to look away from those hypnotic violet eyes. "And I don’t work for the fae. I put them in the ground."

"Bold," Varek noted, the low rumble of his voice vibrating against her chest. His thumb stroked a slow, deliberate line over her racing pulse point at her wrist. The touch was wildly inappropriate, highly charged, and sent a chaotic spike of adrenaline straight to her brain. "But entirely irrelevant. You are coming with me."

"The hell I am." Nessa brought her free hand up, aiming a vicious strike with a silver scalpel she had palmed from the tray.

Varek caught her other wrist mid-strike, pinning both her arms against his chest in one fluid, effortless motion. The proximity was sudden and overwhelming. She was crushed against the hard lines of his armor, her soft human frame trapped against immortal, unyielding strength.

"Fight me if you must, little truth-seeker," he whispered, his lips brushing dangerously close to the shell of her ear, sending an involuntary shiver down her spine. "But understand this: you are no longer a resident of this mundane world. Your life here ended the moment I walked through that door."

Panic, cold and sharp, finally pierced through her anger. He wasn’t here to kill her to cover up a crime. He was here to take her.

"You can’t," she breathed, struggling against his grip, but it was like fighting a mountain. "The treaties—"

"The treaties are ink on paper," Varek interrupted coldly. "I deal in blood and glass."

He released one of her wrists, only to slide his massive hand to the back of her neck, his long fingers tangling in the hair at the nape of her neck. He tilted her head back, forcing her to look up at him. The touch was possessive, a stark declaration of dominance that made her breath hitch.

"Close your eyes, Nessa Calder," he commanded, his voice suddenly layered with a heavy, hypnotic magic. "The crossing is rarely kind to human minds."

    "Go to hell," she spat.

Varek smiled, a dark, devastating expression. "We are already on our way."

He spread his obsidian wings, the massive appendages engulfing the red-lit morgue in total darkness. He pulled her flush against his body, enveloping her in a cocoon of leather, body heat, and ancient magic.

    Then, reality tore open.

It was not a smooth transition. It felt as though she had been thrown into a frozen hurricane. The sound of tearing metal and screaming wind filled her ears. Pressure crushed her lungs, driving the air from her chest. Vertigo violently spun her equilibrium, making her feel as though she were falling upward through an ocean of black glass.

Through the terrifying, sensory overload, the only anchor in the void was Varek. His grip on her neck and waist was absolute, shielding her from the worst of the arcane pressure. She hated him for it, hated that she had to cling to the armored expanse of his chest just to keep her mind from splintering into a thousand pieces.

And then, as abruptly as it began, the violent motion ceased.

Gravity slammed back into place. Nessa stumbled forward as Varek released his iron grip, her knees hitting a floor that felt like polished ice. She gasped for air, her lungs burning, her vision swimming with afterimages of the void.

"Breathe," Varek’s voice came from above her, calm and unaffected.

Nessa coughed, pushing herself up on her hands and knees. The air here was different. It was heavy, metallic, and tasted of old magic and impending storms. She blinked away the dizziness, forcing her eyes to focus on her surroundings.

She was no longer in the sterile, metallic confines of her morgue.

She knelt on a vast expanse of polished, midnight-blue stone that reflected the sky like a perfect mirror. And the sky above was a nightmare—a swirling vortex of violet and bruised-purple clouds, illuminated by jagged, silent flashes of silver lightning.

Nessa slowly rose to her feet, her hands trembling as she took in the architecture of Nightglass Court.

It was a fortress built of fear and promises. Colossal pillars of dark, crystalline glass stretched toward the storm-churned sky. But as Nessa’s forensic sight instinctively flared, she gasped, stumbling backward.

The pillars were not just stone. They were woven through with thousands upon thousands of luminescent, physical vows. Chains of glowing iron, massive briars of crimson thorns, and jagged rings of silver crowns were embedded directly into the architecture. The entire palace was held together by the literal, physical manifestations of centuries of magical contracts. The sheer density of the trapped magic made her eyes burn.

"Beautiful, isn’t it?" Varek asked. He stood a few feet away, his wings tucked neatly behind him once more, looking entirely at home in the center of the terrifying grandeur. "An empire built on the weight of a million promises."

Nessa’s mind raced, analytical and desperate. She was in the heart of enemy territory. The fae realm. The place where her sister had vanished. The place where humans were nothing but currency and cattle.

She looked at Varek, calculating her odds. He hadn’t killed her. He had expended massive energy to bring her here intact. That meant she had value. That meant she had leverage.

"You kidnapped me," she said, her voice remarkably steady despite the terror thrumming in her veins. She smoothed down her rumpled medical scrubs, a ridiculous outfit for the dark majesty of the fae court, but she refused to look small. "You breached human territory, violated the Concord, and brought me to Nightglass. Why?"

Varek’s eyes darkened. The brief flash of amusement was gone, replaced by a cold, calculating intensity. He stepped toward her, the sound of his boots echoing sharply on the glass floor.

"The Nightglass throne is empty," he said, his voice carrying across the vast, empty courtyard. "My predecessor is dead. By the laws of this Court, the crown cannot simply be taken by force. It must be won through the seven succession trials. A crucible of truth, designed to weed out the weak and the deceitful."

He stopped right in front of her. The sheer height of him forced her to crane her neck to meet his gaze.

"The nobility of this court is a den of vipers," Varek continued, his tone dripping with venom. "They lie with every breath. They twist their vows, finding loopholes in the magic to backstab and betray. I need to navigate a labyrinth of assassins and smiling traitors."

Nessa’s eyes widened slightly as the pieces snapped into place. "You need a lie-detector."

"I need a truth-knife," Varek corrected softly. He reached out, his knuckles brushing lightly, deliberately against her cheek. The touch sent a wildly inappropriate jolt of electricity straight to her core, making her breath catch. "I need someone who can look at a smiling fae lord and see the fractures of deceit hiding under his skin. I need your sight, Nessa."

"And if I refuse?" she challenged, tilting her chin up, refusing to lean into his touch. "If I tell you to rot, and let your vipers tear you apart?"

Varek’s expression didn’t change, but the air around them seemed to drop another ten degrees. His hand moved from her cheek, trailing slowly, dangerously down the side of her neck, before dropping to his side.

"You misunderstand the nature of our arrangement," he said softly.

He raised his hand and snapped his fingers.

Instantly, a sharp, burning sensation flared around Nessa’s throat. She gasped, her hands flying up to her neck. There was nothing there physically—no metal, no leather. But under her forensic sight, she saw it.

A heavy, glowing collar of ethereal, jagged glass had materialized around her neck. Attached to it was an invisible, heavy chain that trailed down the polished floor, the other end vanishing directly into the shadow at Varek’s feet.

"What did you do?" she choked out, fighting the urge to claw at her own skin. It wasn’t suffocating her, but the weight of it was undeniable, a phantom pressure that promised total ruin.

"A tether," Varek stated, his eyes glowing with ruthless authority. "A one-sided contract, bound by my blood, anchored to your life force. You cannot stray more than a hundred paces from my side without the glass shattering inward."

Nessa stared at him, the horrifying reality of her situation locking into place. She wasn’t just a captive; she was a conscripted asset in a lethal, magical war for a fae throne.

"You are my eyes for the trials, investigator," the winged tyrant declared, his voice echoing in the dark courtyard, sealing her fate. "You will find my traitors. You will expose their lies. Or we will both burn in the ashes of this Court."
