    VALE

The cold steel of Lucan’s broadsword presses exactly over my sternum.

I look up from the hard slate tiles of the rooftop. The priest’s face is a mask of lethal, blank hostility. The golden light of his magic still flickers faintly at his fingertips, illuminating the torn white silk of the mantle I draped over Sera hours ago, which I am now wearing.

"Who are you?" Lucan demands again, his voice a low, commanding whip crack. "Give me one reason not to burn you where you sit."

The pain of the memory-extraction is a hollow, freezing cavern in my skull. I reached into my own identity, grabbed the concept of my face, and tore it out to shape the shadow corridor that saved us from the falling tower. I knew there would be a cost. But seeing it—seeing the absolute void of recognition in the eyes of a man I just fought beside—is a different kind of violence.

I force a lazy, arrogant smirk onto my mouth. It feels strange, as if the muscles of my jaw are no longer entirely my own.

"I’m the guy who just pulled your pious ass out of a collapsing belfry," I drawl, leaning back against the chimney, pretending the blade at my heart doesn’t bother me. "You’re welcome, by the way."

Lucan’s eyes narrow. The golden light flares, a lie-detector responding to a half-truth. He pushes the tip of the sword a fraction of an inch deeper, piercing the fabric of the coat.

    "Stop!"

Sera scrambles across the slate. She doesn’t just push the blade away; she steps directly between us, putting her back to the priest and facing me. Her breath is ragged, her dark hair wild and caked with stone dust.

She drops to her knees in front of me and cups my face in both of her hands.

The touch is electric. It grounds me instantly, pulling me back from the numb, floating disassociation of the shadow-loss.

"His name is Vale," Sera says, her voice trembling but fierce. She looks deeply into my eyes, her thumbs brushing across my cheekbones, tracing the line of my jaw where the phantom sensation of my erased scar still lingers. "He is the Shaper. He is the only reason we are alive."

I stare at her, my breath hitching in my throat. She remembers. The magic wiped me from Lucan’s mind, and likely from the executioner’s, but Sera’s memory remains untouched. Because she is the Conduit. The magic flows through her; it doesn’t overwrite her.

"You remember me," I whisper, the smirk finally dropping.

"I remember you," she affirms, her thumbs pressing harder into my skin, anchoring me to the physical world. She turns her head to look over her shoulder at the priest. "Put the sword down, Lucan. He is part of the circuit. We cannot open the Palace without him."

Lucan stares at me for a long, heavy moment. He looks at my hands, at the shadows still clinging stubbornly to my boots. He doesn’t know me, but he sees the protective, desperate way Sera is shielding my body. Slowly, reluctantly, he lowers the blade.

    SERA

The air around us is thick, vibrating with the latent energy of the eclipse above.

We are not just on a rooftop. The shadow corridor didn’t just move us geographically; it moved us dimensionally. The edges of the slate tiles blur into a swirling, chaotic vortex of gold and black. We are standing on the physical threshold of the Eclipse Palace, the phantom realm where the laws of the world are anchored.

"The architecture isn’t formed," I say, standing up. The black characters on my ribs throb with a dull, persistent ache. "The Palace isn’t a physical place you can just walk into. It has to be shaped by the circuit. By us."

Ors approaches. The Bell Knight looks devastatingly older, the silver in his hair gleaming under the purple sky, the lines on his face carved deep by the decades he burned to hold the falling tower.

"We rushed it in the square," Ors says, his voice a heavy rumble. "We forced the door open with panic. If we do that here, the raw magic will tear us apart before we reach the center."

"So we don’t rush," I say.

I look at the three of them. The tension is a physical wire pulled taut between us. We are battered, bleeding, and entirely stripped of our old lives. The priest who lost his god. The thief who lost his face. The knight who lost his time. And me, the Vessel built from stolen blood.

"Absolute resonance," I tell them, my voice dropping to a low, steady register. "We need to sync perfectly. Heartbeat, breath, magic. Everything. No walls. No holding back."

I raise my hands, turning my palms toward the sky. "Stop Protocol remains absolute. Palms down on the stone, and it all ends. Do you agree?"

Lucan nods, his eyes dark and intense. Vale gives a slow, hungry nod. Ors simply steps forward, his massive presence a silent vow.

I reach down and pull the ruined, blood-stained fabric of my shift over my head, letting it fall to the slate. I stand completely bare beneath the violent sky, the golden and black runes of the stolen laws glowing across my pale skin.

"Ignite," I whisper, looking at the priest.

Lucan steps into my space. The heat radiating from his body is immediate and overwhelming. He drops to his knees before me, his hands sliding up the backs of my thighs. Golden light pours from his skin, searing into my nervous system. It isn’t just magic; it is raw, unfiltered desire, stripped of all his pious restraint. He presses his mouth to the skin of my stomach, his tongue hot and demanding. A sharp gasp tears from my throat, my hands tangling in his dark hair.

    "Shape," I gasp out.

Vale moves up behind me. The air plummets in temperature, a freezing, delicious contrast to Lucan’s blistering heat. Vale doesn’t touch me with his hands at first. He wraps the shadows around us, creating a cocoon of frictionless darkness that seals us off from the ruined city below. Then, his chest presses flush against my back. His arm wraps around my waist, pulling my hips back against the hard, heavy ridge of his arousal.

"I’ve got you," Vale murmurs against my ear, his breath sending shivers down my spine. His fingers slide down, parting my slick folds, stroking me with a precise, devastating rhythm that makes my knees buckle.

"Anchor," I cry out, my head falling back against Vale’s shoulder.

Ors steps in. He does not kneel. He stands tall, his broad, armored chest hovering inches from me. He reaches out with his large, calloused hands and grips my wrists.

    Clang.

The bell on his chest strikes, a deep, resonant tone that vibrates through the marrow of my bones. Time stretches. The frantic, overwhelming sensory input of Lucan’s mouth and Vale’s fingers slows, expanding into a vast, agonizingly perfect plateau of sensation.

I am the Conduit. I pull their power into my core.

Lucan rises, his golden eyes locked on mine. He undoes the fastenings of his breeches. The magic demands absolute vulnerability, a physical connection to ground the current. With Vale holding me steady from behind, Lucan steps forward and enters me.

I scream, a sound of pure, transcendent overload.

He is so thick, so impossibly hot. The Ignite magic surges inside me with every slow, deliberate thrust, turning my internal architecture into liquid gold. Vale’s shadows wrap around our joined bodies, amplifying the friction, turning every slide of skin against skin into a cascade of static electricity. Ors holds my wrists, his pulse syncing with Lucan’s thrusts, his bell tolling in a perfect, mesmerizing rhythm that dictates the exact pace of our shared breath.

"Give it to me," I sob, my nails biting into Ors’s forearms. "All of it."

The boundaries of who we are collapse. I feel Lucan’s hollow grief and his burning need for truth. I feel Vale’s terrifying fear of erasure and his desperate hunger to be seen. I feel Ors’s crushing burden of duty and his quiet, enduring devotion.

The pleasure builds, an ascending spiral that mirrors the magic. Lucan drives deeper, his jaw tight, his light blinding. Vale’s fingers find the exact center of my nerves, matching the priest’s rhythm.

"Sera," Lucan groans, his control shattering.

"Now," Ors commands, his bell striking a final, deafening note.

The climax rips through me, a violent, world-ending detonation of pleasure. Lucan empties into me, his golden light flashing white-hot. Vale shudders against my back, his shadows contracting sharply. Ors’s heartbeat slams into my pulse.

I take the massive, surging wave of our combined orgasm and blast it outward into the chaotic void.

    Conduct.

The magic tears out of my skin. It strikes the unformed air and hardens. Black marble pillars erupt from the mist. A floor of polished obsidian snaps into existence beneath our feet. High above, a vaulted ceiling of liquid gold arcs into a dome, mirroring the eclipse.

The Eclipse Palace forms around us, built entirely from the resonance of our pulse.

    ORS

The bell on my chest falls silent.

I release Sera’s wrists, my hands trembling. She slumps forward, panting, completely spent. Lucan catches her, wrapping his arms around her waist, his own chest heaving as the golden light fades from his skin. Vale steps back, leaning against a newly formed marble pillar, a dazed, raw look on his face.

I look around the chamber we just forged.

It is vast, silent, and terrifyingly beautiful. The architecture is sharp and flawless, a physical manifestation of the magic we just poured into it. But what strikes me is not the room. It is the sensation inside my own chest.

For thirteen years, the iron bell fused to my sternum has been a heavy, agonizing anchor. Every beat of my heart was a reminder of the time I had stolen, the war I had frozen, the unnatural weight of holding reality together.

But right now, standing in the center of the Palace we just created, the bell feels… light.

It beats with a normal, unburdened rhythm. The crushing weight of the chronal magic is gone, absorbed by the ambient power of the room. I take a deep breath, filling my aged lungs completely, without the sharp sting of calcified ribs.

"We did it," I rumble, my voice echoing off the obsidian floor.

I look toward the center of the vast chamber. There, resting on a pedestal of pure, solidified shadow, is a massive, glowing crystal. The heart of the room. The physical anchor of the law we came to steal.

I look back at the group. Sera is pulling her shift back on, her face flushed, her eyes shining with a fierce, unbelievable resilience. Lucan is watching her, the coldness gone from his face, replaced by a stunned, unguarded awe. Vale is watching the shadows, a faint, genuine smile touching his lips.

For the first time since the war, I feel something I thought I had burned out of myself long ago. Hope. It feels like a perfect victory.

    LUCAN

I pull the remains of my priestly vestments tight, though the cold I feel has nothing to do with the temperature of the room.

I watch Ors walk toward the crystal. I watch Sera follow him, her bare feet making no sound on the obsidian. I don’t remember the thief’s face, but I remember the way his shadows felt when they wrapped around us, insulating the raw power of my light. I trust the circuit. I trust the bond we just forged in blood and magic.

But my magic is Ignite. It exists to reveal the truth, even when the truth is buried.

I look at the architecture of the Palace. The grand, sweeping arches. The perfect symmetry of the pedestal holding the crystal.

I frown, a cold knot forming in my stomach.

The Eclipse Palace is the vault of the world’s laws. It is supposed to be impenetrable. We had to nearly kill ourselves to force the circuit open in the square, and we had to sync perfectly just to form the walls of this antechamber. It should be resisting us. It should be trying to expel the anomaly.

I raise my hand, letting a small spark of golden light illuminate the base of the pedestal.

The shadows cast by the crystal do not behave normally. They don’t stretch away from the light. They curve inward. They are structured, pre-arranged. I look at the floor. The obsidian tiles aren’t just a pattern; they are pathways, subtle grooves cut into the stone, guiding our footsteps directly to the center.

The Palace didn’t just yield to Vale’s shaping and my light. It accommodated us. The shadows actively helped form the room.

"Wait," I say, my voice sharp in the echoing silence.

Sera is already at the pedestal. She doesn’t hear me. She reaches out to the glowing crystal.

It was too easy. The resonance wasn’t just accepted; it was expected.

    SERA

The crystal hums with a deep, vibrating power. It is cold to the touch, smooth as glass, and entirely filled with shifting black fluid.

This is the Law of Water. The anchor point for the tides, the canals, the very sea that surrounds Venice.

I look down at my ribs. The brand the Palace gave me in the square pulses with a sick, burning light: The city must sink. It was the failsafe. The execution order for a city that had grown too corrupt, triggered by the early eclipse.

"I’m going to rewrite it," I tell the others. "I’m the Conduit. I hold the pen."

I press both my hands flat against the surface of the crystal.

    Conduct.

I pull the raw, formatting energy of the crystal directly into my skin. The pain is instantaneous and excruciating. It feels like a dozen red-hot needles carving into my flesh, digging under my collarbones, tracing the line of my sternum.

I grit my teeth, tasting copper, and force my will onto the magic. I visualize the black water of the canals. I visualize the people trapped in the lower wards. I will not let them drown because of a corrupt Church and a broken law.

The city shall rise, I command the magic. Erase the sink. Lift the stone.

The black fluid inside the crystal violently flashes gold. The burning characters on my ribs twist, the ink melting and re-forming under my skin, writing the new law into my flesh.

    THE CITY SHALL RISE.

I gasp, dropping to my knees as the connection breaks. The crystal goes dark, the law successfully extracted and overwritten into the Vessel.

"Sera!" Vale shouts, rushing forward to catch me.

I look up, a triumphant, exhausted smile breaking across my face. "I did it. The law is changed. The city…"

Before I can finish the sentence, the obsidian floor violently shudders.

It is not a small tremor. It is a massive, tectonic heave that throws Vale and me to the stone. The marble pillars groan, cracking under immense pressure.

"Look!" Ors bellows, pointing toward the massive, arched windows of the Palace that look down upon the phantom reflection of Venice.

I drag myself to the window, gripping the stone sill.

    The city is not rising.

Below us, the black water of the grand canals is churning violently. But it is not flowing out to sea. Gravity itself is fracturing. The water is tearing free from the canal beds, rushing upward in massive, inverted waterfalls. The sheer force of the reversed current is ripping the stone bridges apart. Whole gondolas, moorings, and the roofs of the lower wards are being sucked into the sky, pulled toward the eclipse.

    The city shall rise.

I didn’t lift the stone from the water. I reversed the gravity of the water itself.

"The law…" I stammer, horror turning my blood to ice. "I wrote exactly what it wanted."

Lucan grabs my shoulder, his face pale. "It was a trap, Sera. The machine wasn’t resisting us. It was waiting for you to plug in."

The ground shudders again, a deafening crack echoing through the Palace. The victory was false. The circuit we just poured our souls into didn’t save the city. It handed the keys to whatever intelligence is actually running this nightmare.
