    ORS

The deafening roar of the inverted ocean vibrates through the soles of my iron sabatons.

I stand at the massive, arched window of the Eclipse Palace, my aged, calcified joints screaming in protest, and watch the city I sacrificed thirteen years of my life to protect tear itself to pieces.

Gravity is broken. The black water of the grand canals is not flooding the streets; it is ripping upward. Colossal, twisting pillars of brine and debris surge toward the bruised purple sky, pulled by the localized singularity of the eclipse. I watch a heavy merchant galleon, its hull slick with algae, snap its mooring lines and float helplessly into the air, spinning end over end before shattering against the underside of a rising stone bridge.

The screams of the populace below are a distant, chaotic hum, but they echo in the hollow cage of my chest.

    The city shall rise.

Sera’s new law didn’t lift the bedrock. It inverted the pull of the earth. We didn’t save Venice. We executed it in a completely new way.

"The architecture is shifting," I rumble, turning away from the nightmare outside.

The vast, obsidian-floored antechamber we just forged with our combined resonance is cracking. Deep fissures race across the polished stone, glowing with a sickly, corrupted yellow light. The massive crystal on the pedestal, the anchor point of the law, throbs with an erratic, violent pulse.

Sera is on her hands and knees near the pedestal, clutching her ribs where the stolen law still burns across her pale skin. She is trembling violently, staring at her own hands as if they belong to a monster.

"I wrote exactly what I wanted," she whispers, her voice cracking. "I commanded the water to lift the stone. Why did it do this?"

"Because you were manipulated," Lucan says.

The priest turns away from the window, his white mantle stained with dust and blood. His eyes are hollow, but his hands ignite with a harsh, defensive golden light. He doesn’t look at Sera. He looks directly at the thief who just sacrificed his own face to save us.

    VALE

The numbness on the left side of my jaw is absolute. I reach up, brushing my fingers against my skin. The flesh is there, but the concept of my own face feels completely blank in my mind. I am a stranger inside my own skull, all to buy us a door out of a falling tower.

And my reward is the blinding, searing heat of the priest’s magic aimed directly at my throat.

"You shaped this room," Lucan snarls, advancing on me. The golden light whips from his fingers, leaving smoking scorch marks on the obsidian floor. "The shadows guided us to the pedestal. The architecture accommodated us too easily. You corrupted the circuit, thief."

I push off the marble pillar, my muscles screaming in protest. I force a sharp, mocking smile, though I know it looks entirely alien to him. He doesn’t remember the man I was an hour ago. He only sees a criminal wearing his ruined coat.

"I shaped the dark you fed me, Priest," I snap back, the air plummeting in temperature as shadows pool around my boots, hardening into defensive spikes. "I didn’t program this vault. But I know exactly who built the Vessel you just used as a battery."

Lucan freezes. The golden light in his hands flickers wildly.

Sera looks up, her breath hitching. "What are you talking about?"

I don’t look at her. I keep my eyes locked on Lucan, watching the holy man’s self-righteous armor crack. "I was in the Sacrarium Archives with you, Lucan. I saw the ledger when your light hit it. I read the glowing ink."

I take a step forward, letting the cold shadow strip the heat from the air. "Tell her, Your Holiness. Tell her how she got the brand on her neck. Tell her about Experiment 118, and the orphans your divine Church bled dry to manufacture a Conduit because a natural one didn’t exist."

The silence in the room is absolute, save for the catastrophic roar of the water outside.

Sera stares at Lucan. The betrayal is a physical blow, striking her so hard she physically recoils. She thought she was a divine anomaly who failed her city. To learn she is a butcher’s experiment, crafted by the very institution that condemned her—it shatters the last fragile piece of her foundation.

"You knew," Sera breathes, her voice a hollow, agonizing rasp. "You knew they made me."

"I learned it today," Lucan says, his voice breaking. The golden light dies completely, leaving his hands empty and shaking. He takes a desperate step toward her. "Sera, I swear to you, I didn’t know—"

The obsidian floor violently ruptures beneath our feet.

    SERA

The argument vanishes in a deafening crack of shattering stone.

The pedestal holding the massive crystal implodes, sending shards of shadow and light exploding across the room. I throw my arms up to shield my face, but the shockwave isn’t explosive; it is a localized, terrifying vacuum.

A new, massive doorway tears open behind the ruined pedestal. It doesn’t lead to another antechamber. It leads straight down, into a vertical shaft of spiraling black marble and blinding gold script. The absolute core of the Eclipse Palace.

The magnetic pull of the shaft latches directly onto the burning characters branded across my ribs.

    Conduct.

The command isn’t mine. It comes from the dark.

I am violently yanked backward, my bare feet dragging across the fractured obsidian. The sheer force of the pull strips the breath from my lungs.

    "Sera!"

Vale lunges forward, his shadows whipping out like grappling hooks to wrap around my waist. The darkness bites into my skin, freezing and desperate, but the pull of the core is impossibly strong. It drags me toward the edge of the shaft, pulling Vale across the floor with me.

Ors roars, his massive, aged frame charging through the dust. He throws himself to the ground, his iron-clad hands grabbing Vale’s boots just as the thief is pulled over the precipice. Lucan dives beside them, grabbing the collar of Vale’s coat.

A chain of four bodies, desperately resisting the gravity of the Palace.

But the architecture here does not obey our will. The floor tilts at a dizzying sixty-degree angle. The friction vanishes.

    We slide over the edge.

We fall into the dark, tumbling down a spiraling vortex of golden laws and black marble. The descent is frictionless, a terrifying plunge into the absolute center of the world’s operating system.

We crash onto a floor of solid white stone.

I roll to a stop, gasping for air, the brand on my ribs screaming in agony. I push myself up onto my hands and knees. The air here smells of ozone, old blood, and a terrifying, static electricity.

We are in a perfectly circular chamber. There are no doors. No windows looking out over the destroyed city. The only object in the room is a massive, monolithic slab of pale stone resting in the center.

The Genesis Slab. The place where the first laws of the eclipse were carved.

"Stay back," Ors commands, pulling his broadsword. He steps in front of me, his silver hair plastered to his forehead with sweat.

Lucan pushes himself up, his eyes locked on the slab. He doesn’t listen to the knight. The Ignite magic in his veins is screaming, responding to the overwhelming presence of deception in the room. He walks toward the monolith, his hands blazing with white-hot, furious light.

    LUCAN

The truth demands to be dragged into the light.

I step past the Bell Knight, the white fire pouring from my palms and illuminating the cavernous core of the Palace. The light strikes the surface of the Genesis Slab, a monolith covered in thousands of lines of deeply carved, ancient script.

This is the prophecy. The master code that dictates the necessity of the Vessel, the requirement of the circuit, and the laws that govern the eclipse. It is the sacred text the Church has blindly followed for a century.

I press my burning hands flat against the cold stone.

Reveal it, I command my magic.

The golden light floods the carved letters, sinking deep into the porous stone. It doesn’t just translate the words. My magic strips away the layers of time and forgery, forcing the origin of the text to manifest.

The ancient script begins to twist. The formal, blocky letters melt and reform, revealing the true handwriting of the architect beneath the illusion.

I stare at the first line. My blood turns to freezing lead.

The handwriting is not ancient. It is a sharp, stylized script, ending with a violent, looping ‘V’ and a jagged cross-stroke. I have never seen it before, but the thief standing behind me violently inhales.

"That’s my signature," Vale whispers, his voice entirely devoid of its usual arrogance. He staggers forward, staring at the glowing letters. "That’s exactly how I write it. But I… I haven’t shown that to anyone."

"It’s not just your writing," Ors says, his heavy voice trembling.

The knight steps up beside me. He reaches out, not touching the stone, but holding his hand inches from the surface. The iron bell on his chest begins to vibrate, emitting a low, continuous hum.

    Hummmmm.

"The warding on this stone," Ors says, his eyes wide with horror. "It’s a temporal lock. It’s vibrating at the exact frequency of my heartbeat. It’s my Anchor."

I look down at my own hands. The golden light pouring into the stone isn’t fighting a foreign magic. It is sliding perfectly into pre-carved channels within the rock, resonating with a frequency identical to my own soul. The Ignite is the power source.

The retroactive recode slams into my mind, a devastating, world-ending realization.

The Eclipse Palace wasn’t built by gods. The prophecy wasn’t a divine mandate meant to test the city.

    It was written by us.

Ten, twenty, perhaps fifty years in the future. The older, corrupted versions of Vale, Ors, and myself.

I read the true text of the prophecy, the glowing words laid bare by my light. It doesn’t speak of saving Venice. It is an obsessive, suffocating schematic. It outlines exactly how to manipulate our past selves into forcing the circuit open. It dictates the creation of the Vessel by the Church, planting the seeds of my own faith just so I would eventually bring Sera here.

We didn’t break into the Palace. We were summoned to assume our thrones.

"They built a loop," I whisper, the horror choking me. I turn to look at Sera. "Our future selves. They couldn’t save the city and keep you at the same time. So they built this machine to reverse gravity, destroying the world outside so that this Palace would be the only thing left. They wrote the laws to trap you here."

Love, unchecked by morality and fueled by absolute power, had mutated into supreme ownership. The men we are destined to become sacrificed the entire world, and our own free will, just to ensure Sera could never leave this room.

    SERA

The realization hits me with the force of a physical execution.

I look at the three men standing around the slab. The thief who gave up his face. The knight who gave up his youth. The priest who gave up his god. They are looking at me with absolute terror, realizing that the monsters orchestrating my doom are wearing their faces.

"No," I say, taking a step backward. The brand on my ribs is burning so hot I can smell my own searing flesh. "No. We break it. We shut it down right now."

I raise both my hands and slam my palms flat against the solid white stone of the floor.

    Stop Protocol.

The absolute veto we agreed upon in the bathhouse. The failsafe that ensures my agency.

I press my palms down, waiting for the circuit to die. I wait for the golden light to extinguish, the shadows to retract, the bell to fall silent.

    Nothing happens.

The stone beneath my hands turns to liquid shadow. Vale’s future magic. The frictionless darkness wraps around my wrists like iron shackles, violently yanking my arms upward and pulling my palms away from the floor.

"Sera!" Vale shouts, plunging his own hands into the dark to fight the shadows, but the ambient magic of the core violently repels him, throwing him back against the wall.

"The Stop Protocol is void," Lucan yells, reading the burning text on the Genesis Slab. "They hard-coded an override into the prophecy. The circuit cannot be broken once the core is breached."

I scream as the shadows drag me toward the center of the room, pinning me spread-eagled against the cold, vertical face of the monolith.

    The circuit forces itself open.

I do not consent. They do not consent. But the future architecture of the Palace rips the magic out of them. A deafening toll erupts from Ors’s chest, freezing my muscles in place. Blinding golden light tears out of Lucan’s eyes and hands, striking my chest. Vale’s shadows wrap around my throat and thighs, locking me to the stone.

The agony is total. I am being force-fed a magic I cannot conduct.

The glowing letters on the slab crawl off the stone and slide onto my skin, burning new, permanent laws into my flesh. They are chaining me to the core. They are turning my body into the eternal battery required to keep the Palace floating above the ruined city forever.

I look at the three men fighting against their own magic, screaming my name as their future selves use their powers to crucify me.

There is no escape. The prophecy is absolute, and our love was nothing but the trap designed to forge the chains.
