Where forbidden tales are told.

My apartment is suffocatingly quiet, filled only with the low, digitized drone of the morning news broadcast. I sit at my kitchen island, staring blindly at the television screen. The ticker at the bottom of the screen flashes in a relentless, crimson loop: VOSS INSTITUTE HEIR DISSOLVES PRIVATE TRUST, DONATES ENTIRE COLLECTION TO STATE ARCHIVES.

It is an absolute surrender. Callum is gutting his own empire, stripping his family of the very leverage they have hoarded for centuries. He is emptying the vaults, throwing the doors wide open for public auditors to tear through the history of the Voss legacy.

A sharp knock at my door breaks the trance.

I find a bonded courier standing in the hallway, holding a heavy, climate-sealed archival box. He checks my ID, demands a signature, and leaves without a word. I carry the box to the kitchen counter, my hands moving with a numb, mechanical precision. The moment I slice through the heavy tamper-evident tape, the faint scent of sterile nitrogen and old vellum wafts up, instantly dragging me back into the dark of the subterranean bunker.

Inside the box rests the pristine, unburnt Folio 44. Beneath it is a stack of the shadow ledgers and the Geneva black-market auction manifests.

And resting on top of it all is a single, heavy envelope, unsealed.

I pull the thick parchment out. It is a sworn affidavit, addressed directly to the District Attorney’s office. The handwriting is aggressive, meticulous, and entirely steady. It is a forensic, line-by-line confession to the arson of the municipal wing three years ago. Callum details the accelerants used, the entry points, his motive to destroy the auction records his father was hiding, and his catastrophic failure to realize Julian and I were still inside the building.

He didn’t just give me the evidence of his family’s corruption. He loaded the gun, cocked the hammer, and placed it directly into my hands. He is choosing a prison cell over my silence.

The heavy, suffocating pressure of the choice settles onto my chest. If I destroy this confession, I can use the ledgers to burn Sterling and the board, avenging Julian while keeping the man I love out of a cage. I can finally protect the phantom thief who mapped the ruins of my skin with such devastating reverence.

I press my thumb against the jagged, raised tissue of my wrist, letting the physical ache anchor me. Then, I slide the confession back into the envelope, pack the box into my leather satchel, and walk out the door.

Two hours later, the top-floor boardroom of the Voss Institute is a theater of sterilized intimidation.

Director Sterling sits at the head of the sprawling mahogany table, flanked by two corporate attorneys. To his right sits a woman I do not recognize, wearing a sharp grey suit and an expression of profound boredom. A brass nameplate in front of her reads: Elena Rostova, State Investigator.

Sterling pushes a thick legal document across the polished wood.

"The board is prepared to be generous, Rafael," Sterling says, his voice dripping with condescending magnanimity. "We recognize the trauma you endured three years ago has… compromised your judgment. Sign the non-disclosure agreement. Admit your negligence regarding the security breach last night, and hand over whatever scraps the thief left behind. In exchange, the institute will not pursue criminal charges against you, and we will handle Mr. Voss’s recent, unfortunate mental breakdown internally."

They want me to take the fall for the phantom thief, allowing them to quietly suppress Callum’s massive donation and bury the shadow ledgers forever. Sterling is offering me a clean escape. All I have to do is let the dead stay buried.

I look at the expensive Montblanc pen resting on top of the NDA. I look at Sterling’s perfectly tailored suit, immaculate and entirely free of ash.

I close my eyes for a fraction of a second. I remember the smell of Julian’s burning hair. I remember the agonizing heat of the halon room, the way Callum’s hands had gripped my waist, pulling me into his own private hell. I realize, with a freezing, crystalline clarity, that if I accept this deal, if I hide Callum’s crime to save him, I am laying the exact same foundation of lies that the Voss family built their empire upon. I cannot save him without becoming the monster he has been trying to destroy.

"I am not signing your NDA, Director," I say. My voice is quiet, but it carries a lethal, unbending edge that makes Sterling’s smug expression falter.

I reach into my leather satchel. I do not slide the documents to Sterling. I bypass him entirely, pushing the heavy archival box across the mahogany table until it stops directly in front of Elena Rostova, the state investigator.

"Inside that box is Folio 44," I state, my voice ringing off the glass walls of the boardroom. "Along with three centuries of black-market auction manifests proving the Voss Institute’s board of directors has been systematically selling municipal assets and destroying the public records to cover their tracks."

Sterling lunges forward, his face draining of blood. "Soria, you are violating—"

"I’m not finished," I snap, the command in my tone pinning him to his chair.

I pull the final envelope from my satchel and place it perfectly centered on the table. The silence in the room turns into a vacuum, thick and violently charged.

"That is a signed, physical confession from Callum Voss," I say, forcing the words through the agonizing constriction in my throat. I look Sterling dead in the eye, watching his empire burn to the ground in real time. "Detailing exactly how he initiated the fire that destroyed the municipal wing three years ago. The fire you used to cover up your thefts. The fire that killed Julian."

I step back from the table, leaving the absolute ruin of the Voss legacy, and the man I love, laid bare under the fluorescent lights.
