Where forbidden tales are told.

The fluorescent lights of the conservation lab buzz with a clinical, unforgiving glare. It is seven in the morning. My skin still hums with the phantom pressure of Callum’s hands, a dangerous, intoxicating heat that feels entirely at odds with the sterile steel of my workstation. I have not slept. The titanium briefcase containing Folio 44 sits locked in my desk, but right now, my focus is on the single black leather glove resting on the green cutting mat—the one Callum discarded in the bunker.

I pick up a micro-scalpel and carefully scrape a line of residue from the stitching near the thumb. Under the microscope, the black dust isn’t just dirt from the subterranean stacks. It is a coarse, crystalline soot.

My chest tightens, a sudden, instinctual warning bell ringing in the back of my skull.

I transfer the microscopic flakes into a glass vial, add a drop of nitric acid solvent, and slide it into the lab’s mass spectrometer. The machine whirs to life, plotting the chemical composition on the monitor. I pull up the encrypted coroner’s report from three years ago—the forensic breakdown of the accelerant that incinerated the municipal wing.

The progress bar ticks across the screen. My scarred wrist aches with a dull, rhythmic throb, a physical echo of a nightmare trying to breach the surface.

    The graph spikes.

I stare at the monitor, the breath leaving my lungs in a single, ragged exhale. The signature is a flawless, one-to-hundred match. Potassium chlorate, antimony sulfide, and a highly specific, antique white phosphorus compound. It is the chemical makeup of nineteenth-century parlor matches, a rare variant stored exclusively in the climate-controlled display cases of the Voss family’s private collection.

The world abruptly tilts on its axis. The heavy, impenetrable architecture of the Voss Archive seems to collapse inward, suffocating me.

Every disparate piece of the puzzle snaps together with a brutal, geometric precision. Callum’s paralyzing terror at the sound of a striking match in the courtyard. The obsessive, suicidal crusade to steal back the names of the dead. The way he had traced the ruined topography of my burn scars in the dark of the halon room—it hadn’t just been reverence.

It was the crushing, suffocating weight of absolute guilt.

Callum didn’t just know about the fire that killed Julian. He didn’t just cover it up. Callum lit the match. The man who had kissed me like I was his salvation was the exact same man who had condemned me to the flames. The intimacy we shared just hours ago curdles into something violently toxic, a poison seeping directly into my bloodstream.

"I didn’t know he was in the building."

The voice comes from the doorway. I do not jump. The shock has paralyzed my nervous system, leaving behind only a freezing, crystalline clarity.

Callum stands on the threshold of the lab. He has stripped off his dark overcoat, his white shirt unbuttoned at the collar, making him look devastatingly human. He looks at the glowing monitor, reading the chemical graph, and he does not take a single step forward. The stoic, aristocratic mask is completely gone, leaving only the hollowed-out wreckage of a man waiting for the executioner’s blade.

"Julian was close to the auction ledgers," Callum says, his voice a deadened, gravelly rasp. "My father was going to have him killed and stage it as a break-in. I thought… I thought if I burned the municipal wing down, if I destroyed the ledgers first, the board would have no motive. I thought I was saving him."

I grip the edge of the steel table so hard my scarred knuckles turn white. "You burned him alive."

"I set the fire in the empty annex," Callum whispers, a fractured, agonizing sound. "I didn’t know he had gone back inside to pull the backups. I didn’t know you would go in after him. I have spent every single day of the last three years trying to burn in his place."

He is offering me his throat. He is begging for my hatred, because it is the only penance that makes sense to him. But before the venom can spill from my lips, the heavy glass doors of the conservation lab are violently forced open.

Director Sterling storms into the room, his face flushed with a terrifying, triumphant rage. He is flanked by three armed security contractors.

"We ran a full ultraviolet sweep of the subterranean levels this morning," Sterling spits, his eyes darting from Callum to me, locking onto the discarded leather glove on my desk. "The cyan dye on the vault keypad. The overridden cameras. We have you on tape, Rafael. You didn’t just fail to secure the archive. You conspired with the thief."

Sterling turns to the guards. "Lock the building down. Call the police. I want Soria brought up on corporate espionage and grand larceny, and I want the board convened immediately to strip Mr. Voss of his administrative immunity."

The trap has finally snapped shut. Sterling has everything he needs to bury the truth forever, using the very investigation I started.

Callum steps forward, placing himself between the armed guards and my workstation, his posture instantly hardening into lethal defiance. He is ready to fight them, ready to tear the room apart to get me out.

But the paradigm in my mind has already shifted permanently.

I look at Sterling, the architect of the cover-up. I look at Callum, the architect of the fire. They are two sides of the same rotting, poisonous coin, fighting over the ashes of my life.

"Don’t bother," I say, my voice cutting through the tension like a scalpel.

I step out from behind the desk. I do not look at Callum. I do not let him see the absolute ruin inside me. I strip off my nitrile gloves and drop them onto the floor.

"You can have him," I tell Sterling, my eyes devoid of anything resembling warmth. "He’s the Redactor. He burned the municipal wing. And I am entirely done bleeding for the Voss estate."

I shoulder past the security contractors, walking out into the harsh morning light, leaving the man I love to the wolves he created.
