Where forbidden tales are told.

    Maeve

Local 109 sits at the edge of the company town line like a concrete bunker defying a storm. The windows are barred, the heavy steel doors reinforced by generations of striking miners who learned the hard way that the Black family’s enforcers do not respect picket lines.

Tonight, the perimeter is quiet, but the tension in the air is thick enough to choke on. The sky above is bleeding into a bruised, rust-colored red. The Blood Moon is rising.

I step out of the treeline, the crunch of pine needles loud under my boots. The four massive coal wolves flank me, their bodies shifting and crackling with static energy, casting long, unnatural shadows against the gravel parking lot. Gideon walks a half-step behind me. He is a terrifying silhouette in his torn canvas jacket, his pale eyes catching the sickly red light from the sky, but he keeps his hands visible and his posture deferential. He knows exactly what his presence means here.

I pound my fist against the reinforced steel door of the union hall. Three heavy, rhythmic strikes.

A heavy deadbolt slides back. The door cracks open, and the barrel of a twelve-gauge shotgun slides out, aimed directly at my chest.

"Step into the light," a gruff voice demands. It’s Miller, the foreman from Shaft 4.

"Lower the gun, Miller," I say, stepping forward so the harsh yellow glare of the porch light hits my soot-stained face. "It’s Inspector Rook."

The door swings wider, revealing Miller and half a dozen night-shift miners, all armed with hunting rifles and heavy iron pickaxes. Their relief at seeing me alive instantly vaporizes the second they register who is standing behind me, and what is flanking my sides.

The men stumble back, weapons raising, a cacophony of panicked shouts filling the small foyer.

"Black!" Miller bellows, racking the pump of his shotgun and aiming it straight at Gideon’s face. "The bastard’s got the inspector! Take him down!"

The coal wolves react instantly. With a sound like grinding tectonic plates, two of the beasts surge forward, placing their massive, smoke-shifting bodies between the gun barrels and Gideon. Their ember-eyes flare, and the air pressure in the room drops so violently that the men gasp for breath.

"Stand down!" I bark, my voice laced with the raw, ancient resonance of the deep earth. The command hits the room like a physical shockwave. The wolves freeze, their jaws inches from the miners, waiting for my final word.

The men stare at me in absolute terror. They have spent their lives digging into the mountain, but they have never seen the mountain walk into their hall.

"He is with me," I state, projecting total, unwavering authority. I step past the wolves, forcing Miller to lower his weapon or shoot through me. "The main shaft collapsed. The ancestral tunnels are breached. The Black family is forcing the Blood Moon ritual early, and they are locking down the town to cull sacrifices."

Miller lowers the shotgun, his hands trembling. "Inspector… what are those things?"

"They are the mountain," I say, refusing to elaborate on my bloodline. "And they are the only reason we aren’t buried under two miles of rock. Now, clear the main table. I need a tactical map of the Black estate."

I don’t wait for permission. I walk past the stunned men, moving into the cavernous main hall of the union house. The room smells of stale coffee, cheap tobacco, and decades of frustrated sweat. It is the absolute antithesis of the Black family’s sterilized, opulent boardroom. It is human, gritty, and fiercely real.

Gideon follows me, drawing terrified, hateful stares from the workers, but no one makes a move against him. The wolves scatter, taking up defensive positions at the windows and doors.

I drop the oilcloth-wrapped bundle of files Gideon gave me onto the long oak table in the center of the room. I spread the blueprints out, flattening the curling edges.

"My father’s enforcers are sweeping the residential sectors," Gideon says, stepping up to the opposite side of the table. He speaks directly to me, completely ignoring the armed men encircling us. "They are looking for Julian. My brother is the backup sacrifice for the gate."

"Then we make sure they never reach the town line," I say.

I place my palms flat on the architectural schematic of the Black family mansion. I close my eyes, reaching for the blood-tie that hums in my veins, connecting my pulse to the static charge of the dust.

Hunt, I command the deep earth. Trap them in their cage.

The air in the union hall crackles. The two wolves standing guard by the front door dissolve instantly, their bodies collapsing into a fine black powder that shoots under the doorframe and out into the night wind. I feel them racing across the valley, their mass expanding as they draw on the coal dust embedded in the roads and the hillsides.

Within seconds, the psychic feedback hits me. A perimeter of shifting black dust and localized kinetic force surrounds the iron gates of the Black estate. The siege is set.

"The mansion is contained," I announce, opening my eyes to look at the room. "Nothing gets out. But the enforcers already in the town—"

"Are here," a new voice interrupts from the back hallway.

    Gideon

I turn toward the corridor leading to the rear loading dock.

Julian stands in the doorway, flanked by three massive, soot-covered union mechanics holding heavy steel wrenches. My younger brother is pale, his expensive silk shirt torn at the shoulder, his hands trembling. He is twenty-two, barely initiated into the family’s dark operations, and utterly terrified.

"Julian," I breathe, the knot of dread in my chest finally loosening.

He stares at me, his eyes wide. "Gideon. They said you were dead. Father said the mine collapsed and you were gone. He sent the guard to my quarters… they had silver chains, Gideon. They were going to drag me to the altar."

"I know," I say softly, keeping my distance so I don’t spook him further. "You’re safe now."

Julian looks past me, his gaze locking onto Maeve. He sees the residual black dust swirling around her boots, the absolute command she holds over the room, and the two remaining coal wolves standing guard by the windows. He shrinks back. "Who is she?"

"I am the woman keeping your family’s monsters off your back," Maeve answers, her tone sharp and uncompromising. She walks around the table, stopping a few feet from Julian. She doesn’t offer comfort; she offers reality. "You are under the protection of Local 109. You are our hostage, and you are our leverage. Do you understand?"

Julian swallows hard, looking at me for confirmation. I nod.

"I yield him to your custody, Inspector," I say, my voice carrying clearly across the silent hall. The union men exchange bewildered looks. The heir to the company, surrendering his own blood to the workers. "He stays in the reinforced basement. He doesn’t leave this building until the Blood Moon sets."

Maeve studies me for a long moment, reading the complete surrender in my posture. I hold zero territorial power here. My wealth, my title, my family name—they are utterly useless in this room. I am standing in the stronghold of the people I was bred to rule, relying entirely on the mercy and the authority of the woman I tried to bury.

And I have never felt more alive.

"Take the boy downstairs," Maeve orders Miller. "Lock the vault door. Two men on guard. The rest of you, reinforce the window barricades. The wolves will handle the perimeter, but if anything gets past them, you use the silver-slugs in the lockbox."

The men scramble to obey her, the paralyzing shock broken by her decisive leadership. Julian is escorted away, casting one last desperate look at me before disappearing down the stairwell.

The hall erupts into organized chaos. Heavy wooden pallets are dragged across the floor, weapons are checked, and radios squawk to life.

Maeve watches the perimeter secure for a moment, the tension pulling tight across her shoulders. She is running on pure, unadulterated adrenaline, covered in the dirt of the ancestral mine, bleeding from a dozen small cuts, and bearing the psychic weight of a god’s prison.

She turns to me. Her dark eyes are bottomless, burning with a fierce, intelligent heat that makes my restored blood roar in my ears.

"The back office," she says, her voice dropping so only my enhanced hearing can catch it. "Now."

She doesn’t wait for my answer. She turns and walks down the narrow hallway behind the main desk. I follow her, the heavy thud of my boots entirely drowned out by the hammering of my own heart.

    Maeve

The local president’s office is small, windowless, and smells heavily of old paper and dust. A single, flickering fluorescent bulb illuminates a cramped metal desk, a filing cabinet, and a narrow, military-style canvas cot pushed against the concrete wall.

I step inside. Gideon follows, closing the heavy wooden door behind him. He reaches up and twists the brass deadbolt.

The lock clicks into place. The chaotic noise of the union hall outside instantly muffles into a low, distant hum.

    We are alone.

The physical captivity of the mine is gone. The medical emergency is resolved. We are standing on neutral, fortified ground, completely outside the jurisdiction of his father’s company and the reach of the enforcers. Every external pressure has been stripped away, leaving only the charged, suffocating gravity between us.

Gideon stays near the door. He is giving me the room. He is giving me the choice. His silver eyes track my every movement, dark with a hunger that goes far deeper than blood starvation. The restraint radiating from him is absolute, trembling violently against his predatory instincts.

I unclip the heavy tactical flashlight from my harness and set it on the desk. I unfasten the thick canvas belt around my waist, letting the heavy pry bar and utility knife clatter onto the metal surface.

"Are you certain?" Gideon asks, his voice a gravelly whisper that sends a shiver of pure heat straight down my spine. "Because if you cross this line with me, Maeve, I am not turning back. Not tonight. Not ever."

"I didn’t bring you in here to talk about turning back," I reply.

I step into his space. He is so tall, a solid wall of muscle and dangerous grace, but I don’t feel small in his shadow. I feel like the match that is about to ignite the powder keg.

I reach up and grip the thick lapels of his ruined canvas jacket. I pull him down, meeting him halfway.

The kiss is an explosion. It is nothing like the desperate, survival-fueled clash on the ridge. This is deliberate. This is possessive. Gideon groans, a deep, rumbling sound that vibrates against my chest, and his hands finally come up to touch me. He doesn’t grab; he frames my face, his large, cold palms tracking through my tangled, soot-caked hair.

He tastes like ozone, dark night, and the terrifying, beautiful edge of a monster completely surrendering its leash.

I push backward, breaking the kiss just enough to breathe, and drag him with me until the backs of my knees hit the edge of the narrow cot. I pull the heavy jacket off his shoulders, letting it drop to the concrete floor. The thermal shirt beneath is torn, revealing the pale, flawless expanse of his chest.

"Your turn," I command, my voice low, breathless.

Gideon’s eyes darken. He reaches for the heavy brass zipper of my thick mining coveralls. He pulls it down with slow, agonizing deliberation, the rasp of the metal incredibly loud in the small room. He slides the heavy fabric off my shoulders, pulling my arms free until the coveralls pool at my waist. I am wearing a simple, sweat-dampened tank top underneath, my skin bruised and smeared with coal dust.

He doesn’t care about the dirt. He looks at me like I am the only source of light left in the world.

He drops to his knees in front of me. The movement is so sudden, so steeped in absolute reverence, that my breath catches in my throat. He wraps his arms around my hips, burying his face against my stomach, his cold skin a shocking contrast to my fevered heat.

"Gideon," I gasp, my fingers immediately sinking into his dark hair.

"I am entirely yours," he murmurs against my skin, the vibration of his voice sending a violent tremor through my core. "Do whatever you want with me."

    Gideon

The scent of her—sweat, copper, and the wild, ancient magic of the deep earth—is a narcotic.

I have spent a century maintaining absolute control, punishing myself for the sins of my bloodline by living a life of sterile, rigid discipline. I refused the power of my family. I refused the blood of the workers. But kneeling here, with her hands tangled in my hair and her pulse hammering against my mouth, I want to drown in her.

I look up at her. Her face is flushed, her dark eyes half-lidded but blazing with authority. She is not a fragile thing to be broken or protected. She is the Alpha.

She pulls me up. I rise smoothly, catching her by the waist and lifting her onto the edge of the metal desk, sweeping the blueprints and files onto the floor with a violent clatter. I step between her thighs, crowding her against the edge of the desk, my hands gripping the curve of her hips.

"Stop me if you need to," I say, the words torn from my throat. "Tell me to stop."

"I am not going to tell you to stop," she says fiercely, grabbing the hem of my shirt and yanking it over my head.

I discard the shirt, my skin burning wherever she touches me. She traces the hard lines of my chest, her fingertips grazing the faded, silver scars of old cave-ins and rescue missions. When her hands slide down to the heavy buckle of my work pants, my control finally fractures.

I capture her mouth again, my fangs fully descended, grazing carefully against her lower lip. I don’t bite. I map the shape of her, my tongue tasting the lingering salt and adrenaline. I strip away the rest of our ruined clothes, desperate to feel the absolute, barrierless friction of her skin against mine.

She is incredibly responsive, arching into my touch, her nails dragging down my back with a sharp, grounding pain that anchors me to the physical reality of the room. I lift her slightly, shifting her weight onto the edge of the desk, and guide myself into her.

    We both freeze.

The intrusion is slow, incredibly deep, and agonizingly perfect. Maeve throws her head back, a sharp, ragged gasp tearing from her lips. Her internal heat is overwhelming, gripping me so tightly my vision flashes with silver static.

"Maeve," I grind out, my muscles locking as I fight the urge to move, terrified of hurting her. "Are you okay?"

She looks down at me, her chest heaving, a fierce, brilliant smile breaking through the exhaustion on her face. "You talk too much, Black."

She wraps her long legs around my waist, locking her ankles at the small of my back, and pulls me flush against her.

The rhythm we fall into is heavy, primal, and stripped of all pretense. It is the collision of two people who have stared into the abyss and survived. The metal desk groans and shifts against the concrete wall with every powerful thrust. The physical sensation is blinding, pushing out the terror of the impending Blood Moon, pushing out the psychic roar of the god in the mountain, pushing out everything except the profound, consuming reality of her.

She matches my strength flawlessly. When I grip her hips, leaving dark bruises blooming on her pale skin, she bites my shoulder, drawing a bead of blood that she instantly licks away. The sensory overload is absolute.

"Look at me," I demand, my voice a guttural rasp as the pressure coiling at the base of my spine reaches a critical mass.

She opens her eyes. They are entirely black, the pupils blown wide, the wild earth-magic rising to the surface of her skin in a faint, static hum.

"Mine," I snarl, the ancient, territorial instinct of my kind finally breaking loose, but aimed entirely at submission rather than dominance.

"Yours," she gasps, her fingers digging mercilessly into my shoulders.

She shatters around me. Her internal muscles clamp down with a violent, rhythmic force that completely destroys the last of my restraint. I drive into her one final, devastating time, a raw shout tearing from my throat as I follow her over the edge. The climax hits me like a physical blow, a rush of pure, searing heat that floods my veins and temporarily deafens me.

I collapse forward, burying my face in the curve of her neck, my arms wrapped so tightly around her I’m afraid I might crack her ribs. But she holds me just as fiercely, her rapid heartbeat thumping a frantic, beautiful rhythm against my chest.

We stay like that for a long time, the only sounds in the room our ragged breathing and the distant, muffled hum of the union men outside the door.

    Maeve

The adrenaline crash is absolute, but for the first time since the tunnel collapsed, I am not cold.

Gideon is a heavy, solid weight against me. His breathing has slowed to a deep, even cadence, his cold skin slick with our shared sweat. The frantic, predatory energy that usually hums beneath his surface is completely quieted. He is at peace.

We managed to untangle ourselves and move to the narrow canvas cot. It barely fits the two of us, but we are pressed together in the dark, my back against his chest, his arm clamped securely around my waist. The thin wool blanket from the emergency supplies is pulled over us.

I am exhausted, my muscles aching with a deep, thoroughly satisfying soreness. But I am not asleep.

The silence of the room allows my senses to expand again. The residual hum of my magic, stoked by the extreme emotional and physical intensity of what we just did, reaches out into the environment.

I rest my hand on the cold concrete floor beneath the cot.

Concrete is just refined stone. It connects to the foundation, the foundation connects to the earth, and the earth connects to the bedrock.

Through the floorboards, through the dirt, I can hear the mountain.

The vibration is different now. The fossilized god in the ancestral cavern is fully awake. The red sky of the Blood Moon is pulling the ancient magic to the surface. But it isn’t the god’s roar that catches my attention. It is the whispering of the millions of tons of coal dust buried across the Appalachian seam.

The dead are speaking, transmitting the psychic echoes of the Black family’s ritual preparations from the mansion, carrying them through the root system of the earth directly to my palm.

The gate requires the anchor. The blood that broke the lock.

I frown in the dark, concentrating, filtering the noise. Julian is safe in the basement. The backup sacrifice is out of their reach. The Patriarch must be panicking.

But the dust doesn’t sound panicked. It sounds absolute.

The eldest son. The traitor’s blood. The foundation must be fed by the one who intends to break it.

A cold, paralyzing dread begins to seep into my veins, chasing away the warmth of the afterglow.

I remember Gideon’s words in the cavern. I came down here to set charges. I was going to collapse the entire cavern… I was going to end my family’s reign tonight.

He told me it was a suicide mission because of the blast radius. I assumed he meant the physical explosion.

But the magic isn’t bound by C-4 explosives. It is bound by blood.

The only way to permanently sever the connection is from the inside, he had said.

My heart seizes. The realization slams into me with the force of a runaway train.

Gideon wasn’t just planning to blow up the cavern. He knows exactly how his family’s blood magic works. The ritual requires a sacrifice of the Black bloodline to anchor the god’s nervous system to the earth. To sever that nervous system, to permanently destroy the magic and free the mountain, the altar requires a willing, catastrophic sacrifice of that same blood.

He didn’t just break into his father’s office to find structural coordinates. He gave me his files. He secured his brother. He yielded his complete autonomy to me, tying up every single loose end of his existence.

He intends to surrender himself to the altar. He intends to let the god consume him from the inside out to poison the root system of his family’s empire.

He has been planning to die all along.

I slowly turn my head, looking over my shoulder at Gideon’s sleeping face in the dim light. The peaceful, beautiful surrender in his expression suddenly looks like a farewell.

"You lying bastard," I whisper to the empty room, my hands curling into fists against the concrete floor.
