Where forbidden tales are told.

    Maeve

The roar of the Zenith Arena crowd is a physical weight, a crushing wall of sound pressing against my ribcage. My skates carve into the pristine, scarred ice as we take our starting positions for the semifinal, but my mind is still trapped in the suffocating silence of the dressing room.

The video of my sister signing away her integrity for a federation payout plays on a relentless, agonizing loop behind my eyelids. I spent three years sharpening myself into a weapon, aiming all my grief and fury at the wrong target. I look at Irena, poised just three feet away in a glittering, midnight-blue and silver costume that catches the harsh stadium lights like shattered glass. I expect her to look triumphant, gloating over the absolute destruction of my righteous crusade.

Instead, she looks like a soldier preparing for a final, fatal charge. Her jaw is locked, her posture rigidly masking the agony I know is radiating from her left ankle.

I take a ragged breath, letting the freezing air sear my lungs, forcing the phantom sting of betrayal down into my boots. If I fall apart now, the federation wins. If I hesitate, we both crash. The opening notes of the music hit the air—a heavy, aggressive cello arrangement—and I push off the ice, letting the sheer velocity tear the thoughts from my head.

    Irena

I block out the pain with practiced, brutal efficiency. The federation judges are sitting in the front row, their pens hovering over their scoring sheets, waiting for the fracture they suspect is there. They want to see the untouchable champion finally break under the weight of a rushed comeback tour.

I refuse to give them the satisfaction.

I accelerate, cutting a deep outside edge that sends a spray of ice into the air. I can feel Maeve in my peripheral vision, matching my speed perfectly. She is rattled, vibrating with the shock of the truth, but her physical compliance is absolute. As we approach the far boards for the rotational lift—the element we have deliberately avoided practicing to completion—I do not look back. I build the momentum, trusting the sheer, violent physics of our speed, demanding total alignment from my ruined body and total precision from hers.

I plant my right toe pick, feeling the sickening grind of cartilage in my ankle, and pivot.

    Maeve

The wind tears at my eyes as we hit maximum velocity. This is the lift. The breaking point.

I brace for the punishing force of Irena’s grip on my waist, expecting the cold, mechanical control she exerts over everything else in her life. But when her hands clamp down, they aren’t an anchor dragging me down; they are a launchpad.

She vaults me upward with terrifying, explosive power. The massive arena blurs into a chaotic, dizzying smear of neon lights and dark shadows. Time violently suspends. Hanging in the freezing air, spinning and balancing entirely on the strength of a woman whose body is secretly breaking, the entire paradigm of my reality shatters.

She isn’t controlling me to feed her ego. She is holding me up, absorbing the brutal, bone-crushing impact of my weight on her shattered ankle, just so we can survive the system that tried to bury us both. I shift my center of gravity, abandoning my fear, and perfectly align my axis with hers. When she brings me down, my blade strikes the ice with a seamless, silent glide.

The crowd erupts into a deafening frenzy, but all I can hear is the ragged, desperate sound of Irena’s breathing.

    Irena

The screaming of the audience follows us off the ice and into the darkened, concrete tunnel beneath the stands.

The moment the heavy velvet curtains fall shut, cutting off the prying eyes of the broadcast cameras, the adrenaline completely evaporates. My ankle buckles. I slam heavily against the rough cinderblock wall, my chest heaving, the sharp scent of my wintergreen muscle rub suddenly overpowering in the cramped space.

Maeve stops right in front of me, the blades of her skates clicking sharply on the rubber matting. Her chest is rising and falling in time with mine.

I reach into the hidden lining of my costume jacket, my fingers trembling slightly as they brush the cold, metallic casing of the biometric flash drive. I pull it out, staring at the small, blinking blue indicator light. I have spent my entire adult life hoarding leverage, locking secrets away because it was the only way I knew how to feel safe in a world that constantly demanded my blood.

But safety is an illusion when you are locked in a cage.

I look up, meeting Maeve’s dark, breathless stare. I press the drive directly into her gloved palm, letting my fingers linger against the rough fabric of her knuckles. The vault is open. The leverage is gone. I am entirely, terrifyingly at her mercy.

    Maeve

The cold metal of the drive bites into my palm, but it is absolutely nothing compared to the searing intensity burning in Irena’s eyes.

She just handed me the weapon to destroy her, no conditions, no backup plan, no safety net. The sheer, devastating weight of that trust, after a lifetime of calculated betrayals and locked doors, fractures the very last remnants of my defenses. The barrier between us—the suspicion, the hatred, the carefully orchestrated manipulation—evaporates in the dark, suffocating air of the tunnel.

I don’t think. The drive slips from my fingers, clattering uselessly against the rubber floor.

I grab the heavy, sequined lapels of her jacket, pulling her off the wall, and crash my lips against hers. Irena gasps, a sharp, ragged sound that vibrates against my mouth, before her hands tangle frantically in the damp hair at the nape of my neck. The kiss is desperate, bruising, tasting of adrenaline, salt, and the terrifying realization that the only thing keeping us from falling completely apart is each other. She backs me up, pressing my spine against the cold concrete, the shadows of the tunnel closing in thick and absolute around us as the roar of the arena fades into nothing.
