    — Her Hostile Merger Owns the Ocean

    MAEVE

The hull of the Vanguard did not just cut through the Arctic ice; it obliterated it. I could feel the violent, rhythmic shudder of the nuclear-powered icebreaker radiating up through the reinforced steel floor of the owner’s stateroom, vibrating straight into the marrow of my bones. But the shuddering of the ship was nothing compared to the shockwave of Nikolai Arden pressing me back against the frost-rimmed panoramic window.

"Are you backing down, Stroud?" His voice was a low, abrasive hum over the roar of the crushing ice below us. His hands, large and unyielding, gripped my hips, the heat of his palms searing through the thin, torn silk of my emerald evening gown.

"I have never backed down from you in my life, Arden," I breathed, my fingers digging into the broad expanse of his shoulders, gripping the expensive wool of his tailored suit.

We had just spent the last three hours in the grand salon of this very ship, locked in a vicious, high-stakes blind auction. Three continents were facing an unprecedented winter freeze. Global supply chains were snapping like brittle twigs. The Vanguard was the only privately-owned, ice-class breaker capable of leading a convoy through the newly frozen Northern Sea Route. My company, Stroud Maritime, needed it to deliver eighteen million tons of critical cargo—insulin, microchips, winter fuel—to ports that would otherwise freeze and die.

Nikolai Arden, CEO of Arden Holdings, didn’t need it. He just wanted it to corner the market.

I had won the bid at an exorbitant premium. But the adrenaline of the victory, the sheer, intoxicating rush of outmaneuvering the man who had been a thorn in my side for five years, had somehow mutated. The moment the auctioneer brought the gavel down, the tension between us hadn’t dissipated; it had compressed, turned volatile, and detonated the second we found ourselves alone in the private stateroom.

He stepped into my space, his thighs parting mine, pinning me against the frigid glass. The contrast between the biting cold of the window against my bare back and the radiating, consuming heat of his body was dizzying.

He stopped, his heavy gaze locking onto mine. His chest heaved. He was thirty-eight, ruthless, and usually calculated to a fault, but right now, his slate-gray eyes were dilated, stripped of the boardroom polish.

"We stop right now if you want," Nikolai said, his voice grating, entirely serious despite the heavy friction of his body against mine. He dragged his thumb along my jawline, tipping my head up. "Say the word, Maeve. One word, and I step back. You walk out of here the victor, untouched. Your choice. Always your choice."

I stared into his eyes, reading the absolute sincerity there. There was no coercion, no debt being held over my head in this specific moment. We were two apex predators who had finally collided after years of circling. I was thirty-six years old, entirely sober, and I knew exactly what the cost of sleeping with the enemy was.

"If you step back now, Nikolai," I whispered, sliding my hands up to grip the nape of his neck, pulling his face down toward mine, "I will throw you off the helipad. Finish what you started."

A dark, feral sound tore from his throat. He crushed his mouth against mine, entirely obliterating the remaining space between us. It wasn’t a gentle kiss; it was a hostile takeover. His tongue swept inside, demanding, tasting of scotch and pure, unadulterated power. I met his aggression with my own, biting his lower lip, dragging my nails down the tense musculature of his back.

He hoisted me up, my thighs instinctively wrapping around his waist. He walked us away from the window, the cold glass replaced by the solid oak of the stateroom’s central chart table. He swept his arm across it, sending crystal glasses and navigation charts scattering across the floor with a violent crash. He set me down on the polished wood, positioning himself between my knees.

With deft, impatient movements, he unbuckled his belt and dealt with the zipper of his trousers. I shoved the ruined fabric of my gown up around my waist, my breath catching in my throat as his fingers brushed the damp, aching center of my desire.

"Look at me," he commanded softly, holding my gaze as he positioned himself.

I looked. I held his stare, refusing to yield the high ground even as my body screamed for him.

He thrust forward, burying himself deep inside me in one smooth, unrelenting stroke. A sharp cry ripped from my lips, the sensation so intense, so consuming, it temporarily short-circuited my brain. It was perfect friction, hard and thick, stretching me, anchoring me entirely to the present second.

"Nikolai," I gasped, my head falling back, exposing my throat to him.

"I have wanted this," he rasped, grinding his hips against mine, withdrawing slowly before driving deep again, "for five goddamn years."

The rhythm he established was punishing and precise, matching the mechanical throb of the icebreaker’s nuclear engines. Every thrust was a claim, every drag a question I answered by arching my back, pulling him deeper. I locked my ankles behind his back, my hands desperately grasping the edge of the heavy oak table to ground myself as the world spun.

He bent over me, his mouth hot and wet against my neck, biting down gently on my collarbone, drawing a sharp, sweet ache that radiated straight down to my core. The friction was building, winding tighter and tighter like a coiled spring in a high-pressure valve.

"Faster," I demanded, the executive in me unable to relinquish control even now. "Arden, please."

He obliged, his hands gripping my hips tightly, bruising the skin slightly—a mark I welcomed. The pace became chaotic, desperate. I could feel the muscles in his arms straining, his breath coming in ragged bursts against my skin. The pleasure built into a blinding crescendo, drowning out the sound of the hull, the fear of the failing supply chains, the weight of a multi-billion dollar fleet.

The climax hit me with the force of a tidal wave. I shattered around him, my body convulsing, my voice crying out his name in the empty, soundproofed room. A second later, Nikolai gave a harsh groan, his body going rigid as he followed me over the edge, spilling into me with a forceful, heavy release.

He collapsed against me, his chest heaving, his forehead resting in the crook of my neck. We stayed like that for a long, heavy minute, the only sound our synchronized, ragged breathing and the relentless grinding of the ice outside.
