Where forbidden tales are told.

The relentless, deafening boom of heavy iron striking iron reverberates through the subterranean vault, shaking the ancient dust from the vaulted ceiling. Outside the heavy cellar door, the frantic screams of the Sanctum elders dissolve into a chaotic, indistinct roar of fury. They are battering the thick oak and iron with sledgehammers and crowbars, desperately trying to breach the tomb. But the deadbolt holds. The architecture built to guarantee a prisoner could never escape is now the impenetrable shield guaranteeing the world can never enter.

Inside the crypt, the air is suffocatingly thick. It smells of ozone, the dying smoke of the dropped torch, and the overwhelming, heavy copper stench of a slaughterhouse.

I sit in the furthest corner of the cell, my spine pressed against the freezing, damp granite. The wet stone floor beneath me is entirely slick with the pooling blood of the men Silas butchered. Silas lies with his head resting heavily in my lap. The massive, terrifying fanatic who tore three men apart with his bare hands is now utterly still, his immense frame trembling with exhaustion and blood loss. My chained hands rest over the soaked, torn fabric I pressed to his ribs, holding the ruin of his flesh together.

I can feel the exact, sluggish rhythm of his fading heartbeat beneath my bloodstained fingers. It is the most beautiful sound in the universe.

The violent thudding against the door echoes again, followed by the screech of metal scraping against stone. Silas stirs, his brow furrowing. His heavy eyelids flutter open, the pitch-black abyss of his gaze finding mine in the dying, flickering amber light of the single remaining torch. He forces a shallow, rattling breath into his lungs.

Slowly, fighting the agonizing pain in his side, he lifts his massive hand. It is completely coated in thick, drying crimson—the blood of his brothers, the blood of his past, the blood he spilled to keep me. He reaches up, his scarred, gore-stained fingers brushing lightly against my pale, dirt-streaked cheek. The contrast is visceral, a terrifying portrait of devotion painted in slaughter.

"They will breach it," Silas rasps, his voice barely a whisper above the din of the battering ram outside. His thumb traces the line of my jaw, smearing a streak of warm red across my skin. "Eventually. The iron will break. The light will come in."

He pauses, his dark eyes searching my face with a sudden, desperate vulnerability.

    "Are you afraid, Elara?"

I look down at the monster who locked me in a lightless box, the man who starved me, broke my mind, and then laid his own life on the altar he built for me. I look at the blood coating my hands, realizing with absolute, terrifying clarity that I feel no remorse. The girl who feared the dark, who wept for the sun and the cruel family who sold her, died on this cold floor days ago.

I lean down into his bloody palm. I do not flinch from the gore.

    "No," I whisper.

I slide my chained hands from his ribs, the heavy iron links clanking softly as I frame his sharp, aristocratic face. I lower my head and press my mouth firmly against his. I taste the sharp, metallic tang of his violence, the salt of his sweat, the bitter ash of the Sanctum. It is not a kiss of submission, nor a plea for salvation. It is a vow. I kiss him with the feral, possessive desperation of a creature claiming its mate in the deepest circle of hell.

Silas releases a shattered, agonizing groan against my lips. His massive arm wraps around my waist, his grip bruising, pulling me down until my chest is flush against his, our bodies merging in a desperate, suffocating tangle of iron chains and ruined flesh. He kisses me back as if my breath is the only oxygen left in the world.

The heavy door shudders violently on its hinges, a massive crack splintering the wood, but neither of us looks away.

The world above can burn. They can tear the sanctuary down stone by stone, they can scream their righteous prayers and wave their holy fire, but they are too late. Silas did not cleanse me of my sins; he infected me with his. He wanted to hollow me out until only his truth remained, and he succeeded so completely that I have become the very gravity holding his fractured mind together. We are the disease, and we have cured each other.

With a final, sputtering hiss, the dying torch on the floor flickers one last time, violently consumed by the damp, stagnant air.

    The flame dies.

Absolute, suffocating darkness slams down over us, instantly erasing the blood, the stone, and the shattered door. The void returns, heavy and endless. But the terror that once paralyzed me in this blackness is entirely gone. The dark is no longer a cage; it is a blanket, wrapping tightly around the only two things that exist.

I curl my body perfectly into the massive, burning curve of his, burying my face in the crook of his neck. His large hand strokes my hair in the absolute black, a steady, worshipful rhythm. The banging outside fades into meaningless background noise, drowned out entirely by the synchronized, heavy thud of our beating hearts, beating as one, forever entombed in the magnificent, beautiful dark.
