Consciousness returns with the precise, mechanical clarity of a rifle bolt snapping into place. I do not open my eyes immediately. I run a systems check on my environment, evaluating the sensory data. The ambient temperature in the cabin has plummeted well below freezing. The wind outside is a continuous, deafening roar against the reinforced timber.

And there is a heavy, living weight draped entirely over my chest.

My eyes snap open. In the pitch-black gloom of the windowless cabin, I feel the steady, even rhythm of Endrit’s breathing against my collarbone. Sometime during the night, the sheer physical imperative to survive had driven him to close the remaining gap between us. His face is buried in the curve of my neck, his cold fingers curled tightly into the tactical fabric of my vest. His legs are tangled with mine, seeking the core heat of my body.

It is a profound tactical error. I have allowed a hostile asset within my primary defense perimeter. I have allowed the biology of sleep to override my discipline.

I do not gently wake him. I slide my hand flat against the center of his chest and shove him backward with enough calculated force to detach him completely.

Endrit hits the rusted iron bars of the headboard with a sharp gasp, the coarse wool blanket slipping from his bare shoulders. He blinks rapidly, his pale eyes wide and disoriented in the dark as the brutal cold of the room instantly attacks his exposed skin.

"Get up," I command. My voice is harsh, stripping away the fragile, temporary truce of the night. I swing my legs off the mattress, standing up and putting immediate distance between us. I adjust my tactical rig, checking the placement of my hunting knife with rigid, methodical movements. "The storm has not broken. But the rules of your captivity remain active. You forget your place."

    Endrit

The cold hits me like a physical blow, but it is nothing compared to the violent whiplash of his rejection. One moment, I was anchored to the only source of warmth in this frozen hell, and the next, I am slammed against the freezing iron, reminded exactly of what I am: a package. A dead man walking.

I pull the heavy wool blanket tightly around my waist, my breath frosting in the air. My chest aches, the memory of Dardan’s lighter resting on the floorboards returning with venomous clarity. The grief that broke me last night has crystallized into something much sharper. Something toxic.

I watch Besnik standing by the dead hearth, a towering monolith of suppressed violence. He is re-establishing his authority, building his invisible walls back up because the proximity terrified him just as much as it terrified me.

"My place," I repeat, my voice trembling, though not entirely from the cold. I slowly slide to the edge of the mattress, my bare feet touching the ice-slicked floor. "And what is your place, Besnik? Are you the alpha predator? The untouchable phantom of the underworld?"

He does not turn around. He simply stands perfectly still, listening.

I let out a bitter, hollow laugh. "You are nothing but a courier. A highly trained attack dog on a very long leash. You talk about rules and parameters, but you do not make them. You take orders from men like Dardan. Men who would sell you out the second your blood becomes too expensive to wash off the floor."

    Besnik

His words are designed to inflict structural damage. He is probing the architecture of my loyalty, searching for a stress fracture he can exploit. It is his standard protocol: manipulate, destabilize, conquer.

I turn slowly. "My contract requires me to deliver you breathing. It does not require me to deliver you intact. Do not mistake my temporary suspension of restraints for a surrender of control."

"Then control me," Endrit spits back, his chin tilted up in a reckless, magnificent display of defiance. His lips are turning blue again, his body shivering violently, yet he steps forward, abandoning the safety of the bed. He stands in the middle of the freezing room, completely exposed. "You are so obsessed with order. You chain me to a bed, you hold a blade to my throat, you establish your dominant perimeter. But you let me sleep against your chest. Your system is flawed, Besnik. You are breaking your own rules."

He has crossed the line. The insubordination is no longer a verbal nuisance; it is a direct challenge to the hierarchy of our survival.

I cross the distance between us in three massive strides. I do not draw a weapon. I am the weapon. I grab the front of the wool blanket he clutches to his chest, twisting the thick fabric into my fist, and drive him backward. He stumbles, his back slamming into the heavy timber wall with a loud, dull thud that rattles the cabin.

I press my forearm horizontally across his collarbone, pinning him flush against the freezing wood. "You exist because I allow it," I growl, leaning in until my face is mere inches from his. "I am the only rule in this room."

"Prove it," he whispers, his breath hitching, his pupils blown wide. He is terrified, but he refuses to look away. "Silence me."

I intend to. I intend to crush the remaining rebellion out of him, to establish an absolute, irrefutable physical dominance that will ensure his complete compliance until the extraction team arrives.

I drop my forearm from his collarbone, my leather-gloved hand moving up to grip his jaw with punishing force. I tilt his head back against the timber, and I crash my mouth over his.

    Endrit

It is not a kiss. It is a violent act of suppression.

The impact is brutal, tasting of iron, cold, and raw aggression. His heavy hand locks my jaw in place, denying me any avenue of retreat. He is trying to consume my oxygen, to overwhelm my senses, to force my body into a state of absolute, undeniable submission. He expects me to freeze. He expects me to shatter under the sheer weight of his control.

But as his mouth grinds against mine, a sudden, blinding realization sparks in the dark. He is angry, yes. But beneath the rigid execution of his dominance, there is a frantic, jagged edge. His heart is hammering against his ribs with the same chaotic rhythm as mine. His grip is not just punishing; it is desperate.

    He is starving.

The grief and the terror inside me suddenly ignite into a wildfire. I will not be a passive victim to his punishment. If he wants to drag me into the dark, I am going to make sure he burns with me.

I open my mouth, leaning directly into the violence. I bite down on his lower lip, tasting the sharp, metallic bloom of his blood.

He groans—a low, entirely involuntary sound that vibrates through the chest plates of his tactical armor—and his grip on my jaw falters for a fraction of a second. That microscopic hesitation is all the opening I need.

I drop my hold on the blanket, letting it fall to the floorboards. I bring both my hands up, my cold fingers digging fiercely into the thick, dark hair at the nape of his neck. I pull him closer, deepening the kiss, matching his brutal invasion with a feral, tearing hunger of my own. I am no longer the prey being devoured; I am biting back.

    Besnik

The sudden shift in the tactical dynamic is catastrophic.

He does not surrender. He retaliates. His hands are buried in my hair, his mouth a desperate, searing heat against mine that shatters the icy perimeter I have maintained for a decade. The taste of my own blood mixes with the frozen rain on his skin. My biological imperatives are suddenly at war: the ingrained protocol to neutralize the threat, and the overwhelming, primal urge to drag him down to the floor and tear him apart in an entirely different way.

I break the kiss, tearing my mouth away from his, gasping for the freezing air of the cabin. I try to step back, to re-establish the distance, to regain my fractured command.

But my momentary lapse in mechanical detachment has given him the leverage.

Before I can brace my stance, Endrit twists his body with shocking, desperate agility. He hooks his bare leg behind my knee, using my own forward momentum and his sheer body weight to sweep my center of gravity.

We crash onto the floorboards together in a violent tangle of limbs. The impact forces the breath from my lungs. Before I can roll and pin him, he uses the momentum of the fall.

He scrambles upward in the dark. The heavy wool blanket is forgotten beneath us.

Suddenly, the rusted springs of the bed are no longer his cage. I am flat on my back on the ice-slicked wood, and Endrit is straddling my hips. His knees are clamped tightly against my ribs. He grabs a fistful of my collar and the front of my tactical vest, yanking my shoulders off the floor, forcing me to look up at him.

His chest is heaving, his pale skin glowing like a phantom in the dying gray light filtering through the cracks. His mouth is bruised, stained with my blood, and his eyes are blazing with a wild, triumphant fury that completely eclipses his fear.

"I told you I was a thief, Besnik," he whispers, his voice ragged, echoing loudly over the howling wind outside. "Did you really think I wouldn’t steal the only thing you have left?"
