Where forbidden tales are told.

Nia stared at the blinking cursor on the seventy-two-inch monitor. The glow of the screen washed out the color of her skin, leaving her looking like a marble statue in the freezing bunker. The choice hung in the sterile air, heavy as an executioner’s blade. Delete the account and go blind, or leave it open and step into the cage with the ghost who had been guarding her.

She didn’t reach for the delete key. Instead, she rested her fingertips on the home row, the plastic keys smooth and cold.

"We leave it open," Nia said, her voice dropping to a terrifyingly steady register. "We draft a phantom target. Someone who doesn’t exist, attached to coordinates you control. When the algorithm bites and sends a contractor, you don’t just kill them. You capture their uplink. We trace the blood backward."

Dane watched her profile. For three months, he had studied her fabricated terror, but this—this cold, calculated architectural violence—was entirely new, and it captivated him far more than her tears ever had.

He reached over, pressing his palm flat against the monitor, obscuring the draft of the decoy post.

"If we do this," Dane said, the gravel in his voice grinding against the absolute silence of the room, "the hunt goes both ways. There are no more decoys. No more algorithms translating our actions. If you step into this with me, the masks burn."

He stepped back from the workstation. Slowly, deliberately, he unbuckled the heavy tactical rig strapped across his chest. The Kevlar vest hit the floorboards with a dull, heavy thud. He reached down to his thigh, unholstering his primary sidearm, ejecting the magazine, and clearing the chamber. He placed the empty gun and the bullets on the glass desk. The combat knives followed. One by one, he stripped himself of the arsenal that defined his nonexistent life, piling the dark steel under the harsh halogen lamp.

When he was entirely unarmed, wearing only a black undershirt and tactical trousers, he looked at her.

"Dane Mercer," he said. The syllables sounded foreign in his own mouth, rough and unused. It was the first time in nearly two decades he had offered the truth of his identity to a living soul. "My name is Dane Mercer."

Nia stood up. The breath hitched in her throat, not from fear, but from the staggering weight of the surrender he had just laid bare on the desk. He wasn’t just a shadow anymore. He had given her a shape, a name, a vulnerability.

She walked past him, moving toward the heavy, reinforced steel door of the bunker. She gripped the industrial deadbolt. With three sharp, echoing cracks, she disengaged the locks. She pulled the heavy handle downward, pulling the door open just an inch. The faint, damp draft of the abandoned hallway crept into the stifling heat of the server room.

"The door stays unlocked," Nia stated, her dark eyes locking onto his across the room. "An unblocked exit. Either of us can walk through it, at any second, and the other does not follow."

Dane gave a single, slow nod, accepting the boundary.

"And a signal," Nia continued, her voice softening just a fraction, the tactical edge melting into something profoundly human. "If I say the word ‘stop’, everything freezes. You don’t calculate the risk, you don’t argue the perimeter. You simply stop."

"Acknowledged," Dane murmured. He didn’t move toward her. He waited, entirely stripped of his control, letting her dictate the space between them.

Nia let go of the door handle. She crossed the room, stepping over the discarded Kevlar, stopping only when the tips of her boots touched his. She reached up, her trembling fingers grazing the fabric of his dark shirt. She found the hem, pulling it upward, her knuckles brushing against the rigid, scarred landscape of his abdomen.

Dane sucked in a sharp breath as she pulled the shirt over his head, tossing it aside. His torso was a map of old violence—burns, lacerations, and gunshot wounds that had healed in the dark. Nia didn’t flinch. She traced the long, jagged line of silver tissue across his ribs, her touch feather-light, dismantling the armor of his skin just as she had dismantled his tactical gear.

"No more decoys, Dane," she whispered, her lips parting as she tilted her head up.

He didn’t hesitate anymore. Dane brought his calloused hands up, framing her jaw, his thumbs gently sweeping across her cheekbones where the manufactured tears used to fall. The friction of his rough skin against hers sent a violent shockwave down her spine. He kissed her, and it was entirely unlike the calculated, rhythmic precision of his work. It was desperate, unpolished, and drowning in raw, suffocating gravity.

Nia opened her mouth, pulling him closer, her hands tangling in his dark hair. The kiss deepened, a chaotic collision of adrenaline and profound, shattering relief. Every lie they had told each other evaporated in the suffocating heat of the bunker. He backed her slowly against the edge of the server rack, the low vibration of the cooling fans humming against her spine.

He broke the kiss just enough to let them breathe, his forehead resting against hers. His hands slid down to her waist, mapping the curve of her hips, silently asking for the final surrender of their boundaries.

"Are you staying?" Dane asked, his voice a jagged rasp, his dark eyes searching hers for the slightest hesitation.

"I’m right here," Nia breathed, her hands sliding down the broad expanse of his bare chest, anchoring herself to the heavy, frantic beating of his heart. She pulled him back down to her, sinking into the absolute, terrifying freedom of being truly seen, letting the heat of their bodies eclipse the digital war raging on the screens behind them.
