Where forbidden tales are told.

The violet mist is eating through the bespoke wool of Silas’s jacket. I can hear the subtle, terrifying sizzle of the chemical agent corroding the fabric he wedged into the ventilation shaft. It is a timer counting down in drops of liquefied poison.

I do not look at the sealed tungsten door. I do not look at the dead decryption pad resting on my knees. I look only at Silas.

He is sitting back on his heels, the gold-plated Zippo lighter resting in his palm. His hands are a ruin of blistering red flesh and weeping chemical burns, but his focus is absolute. He uses his teeth to strip the casing off the minuscule blue wire, spitting the synthetic rubber onto the metal floor. He is entirely consumed by the mechanics of his own execution. He does not ask for absolution. He does not ask for permission. In his mind, his life is merely the currency required to purchase my exit, and he is paying the toll without a second thought.

A brutal, violent clarity strips away the last remnants of my armor. The empire I built in Veridia, the millions of dollars, the meticulously constructed networks of blackmail and leverage—it is all utterly meaningless. I spent three years building a fortress to protect myself from this exact man, only to realize my fortress is a tomb, and he is the only one trying to break me out of it.

I drop the decrypt-pad. The glass screen shatters against the floorboards, a sharp, echoing snap that cuts through the hiss of the neurotoxin.

Silas doesn’t flinch. He wraps the exposed copper wire around the ignition flint of the lighter. "Get to the far wall," he commands, his voice a hoarse, ragged rasp. His throat is already burning from the trace amounts of the mist in the air. "Flatten yourself against the tungsten. Cover your ears and open your mouth so the overpressure doesn’t rupture your eardrums. When the magnetic seal blows, you will have exactly thirty seconds before the backup generators kick in. Do not look back."

I do not move toward the wall. I crawl across the freezing floor, the silk of my dress catching on the metal grating, until I am kneeling directly in front of him.

The red emergency strobe flashes, illuminating the brutal geometry of his face. His jaw is locked in a rictus of pure, agonizing concentration.

"I said move, Elara," he snarls, finally lifting his dark eyes to meet mine. The feral desperation in his gaze is entirely for me. He is terrified, not of the concussive force that is about to crush his ribs, but of the possibility that his sacrifice will not be enough to save me.

I reach out. I do not hesitate, and I do not calculate the variables. For the first time in my entire life, I act without a safety net.

I wrap my hands around his ruined, blistering fingers, covering the Zippo completely.

The heat of his fevered skin sears my palms. Silas violently tries to jerk his hands away, a frantic, animalistic panic seizing him as he realizes what I am doing, but I lock my grip. I dig my manicured nails into his wrists, tethering myself to his gravity.

"Stop," I whisper, my voice cracking as the bitter almond scent coats the back of my throat.

"Let go of the charge," he grinds out, his chest heaving as he fights my hold. He is physically stronger, but he refuses to use his strength against me, even now. "If you are too close to the epicenter, the shockwave will kill you. Get against the wall!"

"If you detonate this in a sealed box, it will shatter every bone in your upper body," I counter, leaning in closer, invading his space until our foreheads are nearly touching. "You will die on this floor."

"That is the math!" he roars, the sound tearing violently from his ruined throat. The mask of the cold, calculated vanguard completely disintegrates, leaving only the raw, bleeding core of a man who only knows how to be a shield. "You survive. I don’t. That has always been the protocol. It was the protocol three years ago, and it is the protocol now. Now let go of my hands!"

"I am rewriting the protocol," I say, my voice dropping to a fierce, unshakable vow.

I slide my thumbs over his raw knuckles, intertwining our fingers, inextricably locking our fates together over the wired explosive. I feel the erratic, heavy pounding of his pulse against my skin.

"I am not leaving you in the dark again, Silas," I tell him, pouring every ounce of the truth I have spent years denying into the narrow space between us. "If the door opens, we both walk out. If it stays shut, we both stay. But I am done using you as a pawn. I am done surviving at your expense."

Silas stares at me, the red light casting hollow shadows under his eyes. A violent tremor wracks his massive frame. He is a man who has spent his entire existence being treated as a disposable weapon, a monster kept on a leash until it was time to bleed. He doesn’t know how to process a world where someone chooses to stand in the blast radius with him.

Above us, the heavy wool jacket gives way with a sickening tear.

The concentrated violet mist pours from the ventilation shaft in a thick, heavy cascade, flooding the antechamber. The air instantly turns caustic. My lungs seize, a blinding pain radiating through my chest as I draw a breath.

Time is up. The math has zeroed out.

Silas realizes I am not going to move. He realizes I have tethered my life entirely to his. He lets out a devastating, broken sound—a surrender.

He rips his hands free from my grip, but he does not push me away. Instead, he lunges forward, grabbing me by the waist and violently hauling me flush against his chest. He twists our bodies, putting his back to the center of the room and forcing me down against the freezing floor. He cages me completely, using his entire massive frame as a physical barricade between me and the open space of the vault.

He buries my face in the curve of his neck, shielding my head with his arms, wrapping around me like a bespoke suit of armor. I can smell the rain, the blood, and the ozone.

"Close your eyes, Elara," he breathes against my hair.

I hear the sharp, metallic scrape of his thumb striking the flint.

    The world ceases to exist.

There is no sound, only a cataclysmic rupture in the fabric of reality. A blinding, localized flash of white light violently consumes the red strobes. The air inside the tungsten cell instantly compresses into a solid wall of kinetic force. It slams into us with the weight of a collapsing skyscraper.

The floor violently bucks beneath me. Silas’s body jerks violently against mine, a brutal, bone-crushing impact as he absorbs the primary shockwave. The roar of tearing metal and shattering concrete deafens me, plunging my consciousness into an ocean of screaming static and suffocating dust.
