    DAMON

The Aegean Sea turns from a vibrant, sunlit sapphire to the bruised, heavy purple of a fresh corpse as we approach Thera.

The sky above the volcanic island is a permanent twilight, choked by unrelenting plumes of ash and sulfur that rise from the jagged caldera. This is the root of the Council’s deep magic. The Underworld Gate. It is a tear in the fabric of the mortal realm, an ancient wound in the earth that bleeds raw, chaotic power. For centuries, the Council of Seers has siphoned that dark energy to fuel their scrying pools, to bend the Moirai-witches to their will, and to cast their oppressive net over the city-states.

I stand at the prow of Kaelen’s ship, the salty wind whipping my dark cloak around my legs. Beside me, Thaleia is perfectly still. Her golden eyes are fixed on the looming black cliffs, unblinking.

I know what she is feeling. The oppressive weight of a thousand predetermined paths pressing down on her. But here, standing next to me, she is safe from them. I am her blind spot. The Council engineered my bloodline to be invisible to the Fates, a perfect weapon to hunt rogue Oracles because my future cannot be read, predicted, or manipulated. I was meant to be her cage. Instead, I have become her shield.

We leave the ship anchored in a hidden cove of razor-sharp black sand. The ascent to the temple is brutal. The path is carved directly into the obsidian face of the volcano, slippery with ash and sea mist. My hand hovers near the hilt of my sword, my senses dialed to a razor’s edge. I am a Witch-Hunter returning to the heart of the beast, bringing their most prized runaway right to their front door.

"They know we are coming," Thaleia murmurs, her breath pluming in the unnaturally cold air that bleeds from the mountain’s peak. "The Council’s scrying pools are blind to you, Damon, but they are not blind to the Gate itself. They will see the probability of its destruction."

"Then we move faster than prophecy," I reply, my voice a low, rough rumble.

We crest the summit. The Temple of the Abyss is a monstrous structure of unpolished black basalt, completely lacking the pristine white marble and elegant columns of the mainland sanctuaries. It is a fortress built to contain a nightmare. Heavy iron braziers burn with unnatural green flames, casting long, writhing shadows across the courtyard.

Two Sentinels block the grand entrance. They are elite guards, their armor inscribed with warding runes, their eyes deadened by the proximity to the underworld’s radiation. They raise their heavy spears, but they are looking for a magical threat, a disruption in the weave of fate. They are not looking for a man who does not exist in the tapestry.

I move before they can draw a breath. I slip through the space between their heartbeats, the heavy pommel of my sword striking the first guard’s temple with a sickening crunch. As he falls, I spin, driving my elbow into the throat of the second. He collapses, gasping, unconscious before he hits the ash-covered stone.

"Clear," I breathe, rolling my shoulders.

Thaleia steps past the fallen men, her expression unreadable. We push through the heavy bronze doors, stepping into the suffocating gloom of the temple’s antechamber.

The air here is thick, vibrating with a low, subsonic hum that rattles my teeth. At the far end of the cavernous hall stand the Adamantine Doors. They are massive, etched with glowing, blood-red veins of magic, sealing the inner sanctum where the Gate resides.

Thaleia approaches the doors, pressing her palms against the dark metal. She hisses in pain and jerks her hands back. "Blood magic," she whispers, her golden eyes wide. "Centuries of it. It’s woven with the lifeforce of every Oracle they’ve ever sacrificed to the Gate. I cannot open it with a simple kinetic burst."

"Can I shatter it?" I ask, drawing my blade.

"No. It will reflect physical force back at you tenfold. It requires raw, overwhelming magical resonance to break the seal. A localized cataclysm." She turns to me, her chest heaving, the reality of our situation settling over her like a shroud. "I need fuel, Damon. I need a massive surge of power."

I know exactly what she means.

To generate that kind of power, she has to burn a future. Not a small, tactical possibility like the ones we used to escape the labyrinth. She needs to burn a monumental destiny. A reality so bright and heavy that its incineration will crack the foundations of this temple.

And to burn it, we have to light it first. We have to live it.

    THALEIA

The heat radiating from the adamantine doors is oppressive, but the heat suddenly flooding my veins has nothing to do with the volcano.

I look up at Damon. His dark hair is plastered to his forehead with sweat, his jaw clenched so tight the muscles jump beneath his skin. He is the most dangerous man in the Aegean, yet the way he looks at me—with absolute, devastating devotion—makes me feel utterly invincible.

"We need a future," I whisper, my voice trembling. "A big one."

He doesn’t hesitate. He reaches into his tunic and pulls out the woven laurel wreath, the magical conduit that allows us to share the visions, the mechanism of our consent. He slips it over his wrist. I mirror the movement, sliding my own wreath onto my arm. The enchantments flare to life, a soft, pulsating gold in the dim, oppressive cavern.

Damon steps forward, backing me slowly into a shadowed alcove away from the glowing, cursed doors. The rough, warm obsidian bites into my shoulders, but I barely feel it as his body presses flush against mine. He is a wall of solid muscle, leather armor, and scorching heat.

"Show me," he murmurs, his voice dropping an octave, rough and desperate as it scrapes against my ear.

He frames my face with his large, calloused hands, his thumbs tracing the line of my jaw. The physical contact is the spark. The laurel wreaths flare brilliantly, and my heart rate spikes, synchronizing perfectly with the heavy, frantic pounding of his chest against mine.

    The vision lights.

It hits us like a tidal wave of spun gold. We are no longer in the suffocating darkness of Thera. We are standing in the grand, sun-drenched throneroom of the Council in the capital. But the Council is gone.

I am sitting on the High Seat, the marble cool and pristine beneath my hands. I am wearing a crown of woven white fire and hammered gold. I am the Oracle Queen. I have not just overthrown the Council; I have conquered them. I have reshaped the Aegean under my absolute authority. No one will ever hunt me again. No one will ever use me. I am supreme.

    And Damon is beside me.

He is no longer a shadow, no longer a forgotten weapon. He is my commander, my consort. He stands in gleaming armor, a dark king to my golden queen. The vision fast-forwards through years of this reality—ten years of ruling side-by-side, ten years of rebuilding the world, ten years of waking up in a massive, silk-draped bed, entirely safe, entirely untouchable. It is a future of absolute power and profound, unshakeable security.

The emotional weight of that grand destiny crashes into our physical reality in the alcove.

Damon groans, a deep, primal sound that vibrates through my chest. His mouth crashes down on mine. It is not a gentle kiss; it is a ravenous, desperate collision. He tastes of sea salt, ash, and the intoxicating, intoxicating flavor of absolute sovereignty.

The sensations of the vision—the silken robes of the queen, the warmth of the sunlit throne room, the adulation of a thousand subjects—bleed seamlessly into the immediate, visceral friction of our bodies. I thread my fingers into his dark hair, pulling him closer, anchoring myself to the present as the future spins brilliantly in our minds.

His hands slide down my sides, gripping my waist and hauling me upward. I wrap my legs around his hips, completely surrendering my weight to him. He groans again, pressing me hard against the volcanic stone. The heavy, rhythmic friction of our bodies grinding together sends shockwaves of blinding pleasure through my system.

It is a sensory overload. I am a queen ruling a continent in my mind, and a woman coming undone against a stone wall in reality. The duality is intoxicating. I want it. Gods, I want this future. I want to keep this golden cage, because this time, I would be the one holding the keys.

    DAMON

I feel the crown on my head. I feel the absolute, terrifying invincibility of the vision Thaleia has summoned. For a man who has spent his entire life in the shadows, waiting for the knife in the dark, the promise of total, untouchable security is a drug more potent than anything the Moirai could brew.

But I also feel the hesitation in her frantic heartbeat.

I tear my mouth from hers, gasping for air in the sulfur-choked alcove. My body is rigid with need, aching to push her over the edge, to lose myself entirely in the soft, burning heat of her skin and the desperate friction of her hips against mine. But the laurel wreath on my wrist is burning with the weight of the choice.

I press my forehead against hers. Our breaths mingle, harsh and ragged. I slide one hand up to cup the back of her neck, my thumb stroking the damp hair at her nape. With my other hand, I reach across and touch the glowing laurel wreath on my own wrist.

"Thaleia," I grate out, my voice shaking with the effort to hold myself back. "Look at me."

Her golden eyes flutter open, blown wide, swirling with the heavy, narcotic haze of arousal and the lingering echoes of the Oracle Queen.

"If you want this," I whisper fiercely, my heart hammering against her chest. "If you want the throne, if you want that life… tell me to stop. Tell me to pull away, and I will take the wreath off. We will keep this future. We will walk away from this door and find another way to survive."

I mean it. I would burn the world down to give her that crown if she asked for it.

She stares at me, her chest heaving. The vision of the sunlit throne room flickers between us, a beautiful, tempting lie. Then, a slow, fiercely resolute fire ignites in her eyes.

"A golden cage is still a cage, Damon," she whispers, her voice breathless but entirely steady. "I don’t want a destiny that is written. I want the unknown. I want you."

She doesn’t wait for my response. She pulls my head down, capturing my lips in a kiss that is completely stripped of the queen’s elegance and entirely fueled by raw, devastating need.

My restraint shatters. I crush her to the stone, my hands exploring every curve, every dip of her body with desperate reverence. The heat between us builds to a critical mass. The friction is relentless, a heavy, driving pressure that forces the air from her lungs in a series of broken, beautiful gasps. I map the sensitive skin of her throat with my lips, feeling the frantic, fluttering pulse beneath my tongue, grounding her entirely in the messy, terrifying reality of the present moment.

    THALEIA

The pleasure crests, a terrifying, beautiful wave that sweeps away the sunlit throne room, the crown of fire, the absolute security of the queen.

As my body bows into his, muscles trembling, my breath fracturing into a breathless, sobbing moan, I reach out with my mind and grasp the brilliant, golden thread of the Oracle Queen’s future.

I look at the marble throne. I look at the empire of safety.

And with a violent, agonizing wrench of my will, I set it on fire.

The loss is a physical blow. A profound, hollow agony rips through my chest as I permanently erase the greatest destiny I will ever know. I will never be a queen. I will never have that perfect safety. The vision crumbles into ash, incinerated in the furnace of my choice.

The resulting release of magical energy is apocalyptic.

The power tears from my body, a blinding shockwave of silver and violent purple light. Damon shields me with his body, burying my face in his chest as the magic violently erupts from the alcove and strikes the adamantine doors.

The sound is deafening—a tectonic crack that reverberates through the very roots of the island. The blood-magic seal shatters like cheap glass, screaming as centuries of dark enchantments are instantly vaporized by the sheer, catastrophic weight of my burned future. The massive metal doors explode inward, blown off their hinges, crashing into the inner sanctum with the force of a falling meteor.

Silence rushes back into the cavern, broken only by the sound of falling rock and our own ragged, exhausted breathing.

Damon slowly lowers me to the ground. My legs are shaking so badly I can barely stand, but his arm is wrapped securely around my waist, an unyielding pillar of support.

We look through the billowing dust and pulverized stone.

The inner sanctum is laid bare. In the center of the vast, circular chamber, suspended over a chasm that drops endlessly into the dark, is the Underworld Gate. It looks like a jagged tear in the air itself, bleeding a viscous, pulsating black light that makes my eyes water just to look at it.

"Are you ready?" Damon asks softly, his thumb brushing a streak of ash from my cheek.

I nod, the hollow ache of the burned future still echoing in my ribs, but replaced rapidly by a fierce, soaring sense of liberation. "Let’s finish this."

We step into the chamber together.

The Gate reacts to our presence, the black light flaring aggressively. It senses the disruption. It senses the void where a massive destiny used to be, and it senses the Witch-Hunter, the man who casts no shadow in the weave of fate.

I raise my hands, channeling the last, violent dregs of the incinerated queen’s future. The magic pools in my palms, a blinding sphere of pure kinetic destruction. I don’t need a prophecy to tell me where to aim.

With a feral cry, I thrust my hands forward. The blast of silver light arcs across the chasm, striking the exact center of the rift.

The collision of energies creates a vacuum that sucks the air from the room. For a split second, time seems to stop. The black light of the Gate freezes, the jagged tear expanding before violently, catastrophically collapsing inward upon itself.

A shockwave of pure force detonates. The cavern ceiling groans, massive chunks of basalt raining down around us. The subsonic hum that has plagued the island for centuries abruptly cuts off, leaving behind a ringing, profound silence.

The Gate is gone. The Council’s limitless well of deep magic is severed forever.

Damon grabs my hand, his grip tight and grounding. "The temple is coming down! Run!"

We turn and sprint back through the shattered adamantine doors, fleeing the collapsing sanctum. We have no grand destiny protecting us now. We have no absolute safety guaranteed by the stars. We only have the ash falling around us, the trembling earth beneath our feet, and the fierce, undeniable reality of each other’s hands. And for the first time in my life, as we run toward the twilight sky, the unknown feels exactly like freedom.
