Where forbidden tales are told.

The impact is a tectonic event. As the seventy-thousand-ton mega-yacht hurtles toward the unyielding concrete of the Gibraltar seawall, the panoramic glass of the command deck shatters into a million lethal diamonds. I do not look at the rapidly approaching destruction. I pivot, abandoning the helm, and cross the two feet between us in a single, explosive movement. I drive Sienna to the steel grating of the floor, throwing my massive frame entirely over hers. I bury her face into my chest, my arms wrapping tightly around her skull to shield her from the incoming shrapnel and the crushing G-force. The acoustic shockwave of the yacht crumpling against the quantum-reinforced barricade is apocalyptic, a deafening mechanical scream that ruptures my eardrums. The entire vessel tears itself apart, the central processing node violently severing from the global grid in a shower of sparks and boiling coolant. Freezing seawater detonates through the breached hull, a crushing black avalanche. The last thing I feel before the ocean completely swallows the command deck is the desperate, vice-like grip of her hands anchoring onto my ruined shirt in the freezing dark.

Salt water and burning copper. I spit a mouthful of sand and force my heavy eyelids open. The sky above is the bruised, weeping gray of a Mediterranean dawn. I drag my aching body up, my muscles screaming in protest, the soaked, torn remnants of my evening gown heavy with silt and seawater. I am lying on the familiar white shoreline of his private estate, washed in by the localized surge of the crash. The horizon is a graveyard. In the distance, the multi-billion-dollar mega-yacht is a blackened, smoking carcass, impaled deeply into the heart of the Gibraltar seawall. But the red warning strobes of the barricade are dead. The massive hydraulic gates across the entire Riviera—from the elite sectors of Monaco to the sprawling, forgotten slums—are locked in a permanent, unpowered open state. The water levels have stabilized, distributing the super-tide evenly across the coast. The ocean is free, the system is permanently broken, and nobody drowned in the dark. For the first time since my old crew abandoned me to the authorities three years ago, the phantom weight of betrayal crushing my chest dissolves. I am breathing clean, unmetered air.

The blood from the gash on my forehead is crusting in the biting salt wind, but I do not wipe it away. I walk barefoot through the wreckage washing up on my private beach. Splintered teakwood, shredded canvas, and the floating debris of a vanished empire lap at my ankles. I have no server farms. I have no leverage. The biometric signet rings, the predatory contracts, the billion-dollar ledgers—all of it is rotting at the bottom of the sea. But as I step over a piece of the shattered champagne fountain half-buried in the sand, my lungs expand. The suffocating, absolute terror of trying to control the ocean, of playing God to keep the trauma of my past at bay, is dead. I am entirely ruined. And I have never felt so dangerously, intoxicatingly light. The invisible chains I forged around my own neck have snapped. I look down the curving shoreline and see her. She is sitting in the shallow, foaming surf, battered, soaking wet, and perfectly alive.

I hear the heavy, deliberate crunch of his footsteps on the wet sand before I look up. Lucian stops a few feet away, the rising tide washing over his bare feet. He looks like a deposed king—his bespoke clothes torn to bloodied rags, stripped of all his terrifying algorithmic authority. But the darkness in his eyes isn’t gone; it has just been set completely off its leash, feral and sharply focused on me. I push myself to my feet, ignoring the sharp ache in my ribs. I reach into the soaked, ruined bodice of my dress and pull out a sleek, waterproof titanium data-drive. "You burned the master ledger to smash the fail-safe," I say, my voice a raspy, breathless whisper over the crashing waves, "but you left the backdoor I opened wide open." I toss the small silver drive into the air. He catches it effortlessly. "I scraped twenty percent of the liquid assets from the offshore holding accounts right before impact. Seven billion dollars. Untraceable." I step directly into his space, tilting my chin up to meet his predatory gaze, refusing to yield an inch. "No more cages, Lucian. No more escorts. No more contracts. We rebuild the empire, but we do it in the shadows, and we do it my way. Equal partners. Or I walk."

She just stole seven billion dollars from the ashes of my own apocalypse and used it to buy me back. The sheer, magnificent audacity of her ignites a fire in my blood that burns hotter than the ruined engines of my ship. I drop the titanium drive onto the wet sand. The money is entirely irrelevant. The only currency that matters in this drowned world is the woman standing in front of me, demanding to rule the ruins by my side. I close the final inch of distance, my hands gripping her waist, dragging her flush against my battered body. "There is no walking away, Sienna. Not ever again," I growl against her mouth, the last vestige of my civilized restraint snapping completely. I drive her backward, my weight pressing her down into the freezing, wet sand. She doesn’t fight me; she pulls me down fiercely, her fingers digging desperately into my shoulders, her mouth opening to mine in a bruising, violent kiss that tastes of salt and survival. The cold ocean tide washes over our tangled legs, but I am entirely consumed by the blinding, feral heat of her skin. I tear the ruined silk of her dress aside, claiming her not as a captive, not as a pawn, but as my absolute equal. We are starving creatures, devouring each other on the edge of the world we broke. My hands map the curves of her body, completely unbound by any contract, every heavy, explicit touch a raw, deliberate choice. As she arches into me, crying out my name against the roar of the breaking waves, her nails scoring my back, I sink deep inside her, locking her away in the only cage she will ever accept: my arms. We are the architects of the flood, two dangerous, brilliant liars who burned the world down just to find the truth in each other, and we belong entirely to the beautiful, chaotic dark.
