RHEA
The sound of the opalescent crystal shard shattering against the blood-stained marble is not a delicate chime. It is the deep, structural crack of an ancient vault door tearing open from the inside, a violent resonance that vibrates through the soles of my boots and rattles the bones of my jaw.
The fragments scatter across the floor like frozen tears, and then the air ignites.
A blinding, iridescent shockwave erupts outward from the shards, rushing across the ruined high-roller pit with the speed and force of a tidal wave. The ambient violet light of the premature eclipse flickers violently, bending and distorting as thousands of trapped, compressed memories are suddenly released from the Casino’s central ledger. The sheer volume of liberated consciousness is a physical weight, a sudden spike in atmospheric pressure that smells of ozone, old paper, rain-slicked concrete, and the sharp, copper tang of ancient adrenaline. My Jackal nose is overwhelmed; it feels like inhaling liquid lightning, a thousand different lives and histories washing over my senses in a single, suffocating wave.
I stumble backward, my boots sliding against the shattered glass and black sand of the pulverized obsidian table. The concussive blast of magic hits my chest, stealing the air from my lungs and throwing me off balance. I throw my arm across my face, squinting through the tears in my uniform sleeve to block the brilliant, blinding glare.
Around us, the subterranean architecture begins to violently convulse. The massive stone pillars groan and fracture, spiderwebs of white dust shooting up their fluted sides before the stone shears entirely. The vaulted ceilings shed tons of concrete, dropping heavy plaster slabs that shatter like ice on the marble below. The very ground beneath our feet heaves, rolling in sickening waves as the magical foundations of the empire are systematically unspooled. The closed loop of the wagers, the eternal debt, the stolen lifespans—it is all snapping back to where it belongs, reclaiming its rightful place in the world above.
Across the room, the owner lets out a final, tearing shriek. It is a sound stripped of all aristocratic poise, a raw, wet rattle of absolute ruin. The ageless aristocrat disintegrates not into ash, but into a swirling vortex of luminous, escaping motes of light. Five hundred years of stolen life, of siphoned youth and hoarded memories, are violently clawed away by the returning spirits of his victims. His skin sags in a fraction of a second, turning gray, papery, and translucent before his entire physical form collapses inward.
When the light clears, there is nothing left of the man who tried to own our souls but an empty, tailored white suit lying flat and lifeless upon the broken glass, its silver cufflinks clattering uselessly against the stone.
"Rhea!"
Dante’s voice cuts through the roaring chaos of the collapsing cavern, low and strained but carrying a fierce, undeniable urgency. He scrambles across the fractured marble, his dark coat torn and heavily coated in grey plaster dust. He reaches me in two long strides, his hands gripping my shoulders with a desperation that bruises. His dark eyes frantically scan my body, searching for blood, for broken bones, for any sign that the blast took more than I could afford to give.
"I’m whole," I gasp, my breath catching in my throat as I look up at him, my hands instinctively reaching up to clasp his forearms. The skin of his wrists is raw, the silver-plated cuffs having left deep, weeping burns, but the toxic magic that bound him has vanished. "It’s done, Dante. The ledger is broken. They’re all free."
Before he can answer, a massive slab of the ceiling directly above us shears away with a deafening screech of tearing rebar. The impact pulverizes the remains of the high-roller table, but instead of trapping us in darkness, the collapse lets in a torrential rush of hot wind, dust, and—for the first time in five endless years—true, unadulterated desert sunlight.
The sky above Las Vegas is tearing itself apart. The jagged black ring of the permanent eclipse shatters under the weight of the returning memories, dissolving into brilliant, blinding sheets of gold as the morning sun reclaims the horizon. The harvest is canceled. The tourists above are waking up from their enchanted stupor, blinking in the sudden light, and the subterranean cage is collapsing into dust.
"We need to move," Dante yells over the deafening rumble of falling masonry, his arm wrapping securely around my waist to haul me toward the massive, blown-open entrance where the grand bronze doors used to stand. "The entire structure is coming down! Run, Rhea!"
DANTE
We run.
We do not look back at the broken gaming tables, the ruined vaults, or the empty husk of the man who tried to own our souls. We sprint through the labyrinth of the collapsing high-roller pit, our boots kicking through piles of bone-carved poker chips and shattered glass. The artificial neon grid of the casino floors is shorting out, spitting blue sparks and dying in long, pathetic hums as the real world forces its way down. The air grows fresher with every stride, losing its stale, climate-controlled chill and filling instead with the scent of hot asphalt, desert sand, and raw, unfiltered oxygen.
My legs feel like lead, the silver poisoning still humming in my veins like a low, toxic vibration, but the sight of Rhea running beside me—her jaw set, her amber eyes bright with a wild, unbroken light—keeps me moving. We leap over fallen support beams and dodge exploding electrical conduits, our movements synchronized by the sheer instinct of survival.
As we hit the final threshold—the massive, shattered stone staircase leading upward to the surface—a heavy tremor rolls through the foundations. The stone beneath us buckles, and a fractured steel beam breaks loose from the ceiling directly above, plunging down with the speed of a guillotine.
Instinct takes over. My right hand twitches, my fingers curling inward to snap the temporal tether, to invoke the seven-heartbeat freeze and pluck us out of the beam’s path before the metal can crush her.
I reach for the magic. I pull at the familiar, cold thread in my chest.
And for the first time in my life, there is nothing there.
The well is completely, permanently dry. The magical feedback from the master ledger’s destruction, combined with the extreme exhaustion of the past twenty-four hours, has completely severed my connection to the time-freezing anomaly. The temporal gears have ground to a halt; the seconds are no longer mine to command.
The realization hits me not with panic, but with a profound, staggering lightness. I am no longer a ghost stepping outside the flow of seconds, trading my very lifespan for a few heartbeats of suspended animation. I am just a man, standing in the present moment, fully vulnerable to the unyielding march of time.
"Dante!" Rhea shouts.
Before my mind can fully process the loss, Rhea throws her entire weight against my side. Her hybrid strength, fueled by pure survival adrenaline, shoves me hard to the left. We tumble together onto the jagged stone steps just as the heavy steel beam crashes into the staircase exactly where we had been standing a millisecond prior. The impact kicks up a blinding cloud of grey dust and shatters the stone into gravel, the shockwave rattling my teeth.
We roll down the remaining steps, tangled together, our limbs catching on the rough limestone until we burst straight through the shattered surface entrance and into the blinding, fierce sunlight of the Nevada desert.
We collapse onto the warm, sun-baked asphalt of an abandoned overflow parking lot miles off the Las Vegas strip. We lie there gasping for air, our lungs burning, our bodies bruised, bleeding, and utterly, magnificently alive.
RHEA
The sun is blinding.
I lie flat on my back on the asphalt, the intense heat of the desert day radiating up through my torn clothes, baking the chill of the subterranean depths out of my bones. I shield my eyes with the back of my hand, squinting up at the sky. It is a brilliant, uninterrupted expanse of porcelain blue, so bright it makes my eyes water. No artificial neon. No false moon. No eclipse. Just the clean, unsparing light of the real world.
The silence of the desert surrounds us, deep and vast, broken only by the steady, heavy rhythm of our breathing and the distant, faint hum of highway traffic miles away.
I roll over onto my side, propping myself up on one elbow, and look down at Dante. He is lying a few feet away, his chest rising and falling in deep, ragged drafts. He is staring up at the open sky with an expression I have never seen on his face before—complete, untroubled stillness. The haunted, coiled tension that defined him in the shadows of the Casino, the constant, paranoid calculation of a thief waiting for the next strike, is entirely gone. The dark shadows beneath his eyes remain, and the silver burns on his wrists are angry and red, but his face is relaxed, bathed in the gold of the midday sun.
I crawl over to him, my knees scraping against the rough asphalt, and rest my hand flat against his chest. I can feel his heart beating beneath my palm—steady, strong, and bound strictly to the normal, merciless flow of time. No heartbeats stolen. No moments frozen. Just the present.
"Your magic," I say quietly, my voice dry and scratchy, barely carrying over the hot desert breeze. "It’s gone, isn’t it?"
Dante turns his head, his dark eyes locking onto mine. There is no panic in his gaze, no regret. Instead, a slow, genuine smile spreads across his mouth—a smile devoid of cynicism or calculation, warming his features in a way that makes my chest ache with a fierce, protective tenderness. He reaches up, his fingers sliding into my dusty hair, his touch warm and solid as he pulls me down until my forehead rests against his.
"Permanently," he murmurs, his voice a deep, gravelly hum against my skin. "I can’t stop the world anymore, Rhea. I’m entirely stuck in the present."
"Good," I whisper, a wet, ragged laugh escaping my throat as I press my forehead closer to his. "Because neither of us is running backward ever again."
The memory of who I was—the street names in Reno where I grew up, the face of my mother, the childhood pet I lost to the roulette wheel—is permanently gone. The crystal heart is shattered into dust, buried beneath tons of collapsed stone. I don’t remember where I came from, and I don’t have a safety net of preserved pasts to catch me if I fall.
But as I look at Dante, I realize I don’t need one. I have a blank page. I have the sun on my face. And I have the man who helped me burn my own cage down to the foundations.
Dante’s hands shift, sliding from my hair to frame my face, his thumbs gently wiping away the grey plaster dust and dried sweat from my cheekbones. His gaze is intense, searching my eyes for any trace of regret, any lingering shadow of the ghost I used to be. Finding only absolute, unyielding resolve, his breathing hitches.
"Rhea," he whispers, his voice thick with an emotion he no longer has to hide behind temporal barriers. "Let me feel you. Right now. No frozen time, no tricks. Just this."
The need in his voice is a physical pull, a raw, desperate hunger that matches the fire blooming in my own chest. We are survivors of a sunken world, and the adrenaline still humming in our veins demands a release that is real, tangible, and entirely ours.
"Yes," I say, my voice steady and clear in the brilliant daylight. "No more waiting."
I sit back on my heels, my fingers reaching for the buttons of my ruined dealer’s vest. The fabric is stiff with dust and stained with dried blood, a relic of a life I am gladly casting aside. I peel the vest off, tossing it onto the asphalt, followed by the collar of my shirt. Dante watches me, his dark eyes darkening further, his gaze tracking every movement of my hands with a reverence that makes my skin prickle with heat.
He sits up, his movements still slightly stiff from the silver poisoning, but there is a fluid, predatory grace to him that has nothing to do with magic and everything to do with the man himself. He reaches for the hem of his dark, torn shirt, pulling it over his head and discarding it. In the bright sun, his torso is a map of hard muscle, marred by the fresh, angry red whip-marks of the silver chains across his ribs and shoulders.
My heart aches at the sight of his wounds, but when I reach out to touch them, my fingertips tracing the edge of a burn, he catches my hand. He presses my palm flat against his bare chest, right over his racing heart.
"I’m alive, Rhea," he says, his voice tight. "Feel it."
"I do," I whisper.
I lean forward, pressing my body flush against his. The contrast of his cool, vampire skin against my warm, sun-baked hybrid flesh is intoxicating. I wrap my arms around his neck, my fingers tangling in the dark hair at the nape of his neck, and pull him down.
When our lips meet, it is not the desperate, stolen kiss of two fugitives in the dark. It is a declaration. It is slow, deliberate, and saturated with a profound, enduring peace, yet underwritten by a fierce, possessive hunger. I part my lips with a soft sigh, welcoming the heat of him, the taste of salt, dust, and the dark, sweet warmth of his mouth. His tongue slides against mine, deep and searching, claiming the present moment with a deliberate, unhurried intensity that makes my head spin.
He groans, his hands coming down to grip my hips, his fingers digging into the denim of my trousers. He pulls me onto his lap, my legs parting to bracket his waist. The heat of his arousal presses hard against my center through our clothes, a blunt, demanding weight that makes a low shiver ripple down my spine.
"Rhea," he murmurs against my mouth, his breath hot and ragged. "I want to feel every inch of you under this sun."
"Do it," I breathe, my hands sliding down his shoulders to grip the waistband of his trousers.
With feverish but deliberate movements, we rid ourselves of the remaining barriers. The warm desert air sweeps over my bare skin, a sensation so sharp and clean it feels like a baptism. Dante’s gaze sweeps over me, taking in the curves of my body, the fading bruises on my ribs, and the subtle, elegant lines of my hybrid form. There is no judgment in his eyes, only a deep, consuming hunger that makes me feel entirely seen, entirely real.
He lies back on his discarded coat, pulling me down on top of him. The heat of the asphalt beneath the heavy fabric warms us, but the real heat is the skin-on-skin contact of our bodies. I rest my forearms on either side of his head, looking down into his dark eyes, which are clear and focused entirely on me.
He reaches down, his hand sliding between our bodies, his long, pale fingers brushing against the sensitive skin of my inner thigh. I shiver, my hips tilting instinctively toward his touch. He moves higher, his fingers finding the slick, aching heat of my center. I gasp, my eyes closing for a fraction of a second as he touches me, his thumb circling my clitoris with a slow, agonizingly perfect pressure.
"Open your eyes," he commands softly, his voice a gravelly caress. "Look at me, Rhea."
I force my eyes open, locking my gaze with his as he slides two fingers inside me. He is thick, warm, and deliberate, stretching me slowly, his eyes never leaving mine as he gauges my reaction. A low, feral purr rumbles in my throat—the last remaining vestige of my hybrid nature, no longer a curse, but a part of my truth.
"You are so beautiful," he whispers, his fingers moving inside me, drawing a long, trembling sigh from my lips. "So real."
I cannot take the sweet torture any longer. I reach down, my hand guiding his thick, rigid length to my entrance. He is hot and heavy against my wet skin, pulsing with a rhythm that matches his heartbeat.
I lift my hips and slowly, deliberately, lower myself onto him.
The sensation of him filling me is so intense, so exquisitely sharp, that my breath catches in my throat. I freeze for a moment, my internal muscles clenching tightly around him as my body adjusts to his size. Dante lets out a low, guttural hiss, his hands coming up to grip my waist, his knuckles white as he holds me still.
"Rhea," he groans, his hips twitching upward instinctively. "You’re so tight. So hot."
"Don’t freeze it," I whisper, my voice trembling with the sheer, overwhelming wave of pleasure. "Don’t let it stop."
"Never," he swears, his eyes blazing. "I’m right here."
I begin to move. I lift my hips and slide down his length in a slow, rhythmic rhythm, the friction of our bodies generating a heat that rivals the desert sun above us. Every thrust is a solid, undeniable proof of our existence. The raw, physical reality of his body sliding inside mine, the skin of his chest rubbing against my breasts, the sweat dripping from his brow onto my collarbone—it is a sensory overload that has nothing to do with magic and everything to do with life.
Dante meets my movements, his hips lifting to drive deeper into me, his hands guiding my pace. The rhythm accelerates, turning from a slow, tentative exploration into a desperate, driving need. The pleasure builds in my abdomen, a tight, coil of tension that grows hotter and tighter with every stroke.
I lean down, burying my face in his neck, my teeth lightly grazing the skin over his pulse point. He groans, his hands shifting to my back, pulling me down hard against him as he drives up into me with a sudden, fierce abandon. The speed of his thrusts increases, his body rigid with the effort of holding back, his breath coming in short, sharp gasps.
"Rhea… I’m close," he pants, his fingers clawing into my back. "I can’t… I can’t hold it."
"Come with me," I cry out, my own peak rushing toward me like a freight train. The friction, the heat, the absolute freedom of the moment coiling tightly, ready to snap. "Dante, now!"
With a final, deep thrust that bottoms out against my cervix, Dante shudders violently. He empties himself inside me, a hot, pulsing torrent that triggers my own release. My internal muscles clamp down around him in a series of intense, delicious spasms, the pleasure washing over me in brilliant, blinding waves of gold that rival the sunlight above. I scream his name into his neck, my body shaking as the climax ripples through me, stripping away the last remnants of the dark, the dust, and the debt.
He holds me tight, his arms locking around my waist, burying his face in my hair as we ride out the aftershocks of our release together. We lie there tangled, our chests heaving, our skin slick with sweat, basking in the warm, healing rays of the sun.
DANTE
The wind carries the scent of sagebrush over us, a cool contrast to the heat of our bodies.
I lie beneath Rhea, her head resting on my shoulder, her breathing slowly returning to a steady, peaceful rhythm. My arms are still wrapped around her, my fingers tracing the smooth line of her spine. I have never felt so heavy, so physically exhausted, and yet so incredibly light. The silver burns on my wrists still smart, but the pain is just another physical sensation, a reminder that my body is working, healing, and living.
I look at my hand, resting against her hip. There is no grey tint to the world. The shadows are just shadows, cast by the bright, unyielding sun. I am no longer a thief of time. I am just a man, holding the woman he loves, letting the seconds tick by without trying to catch them.
"We have no money," I say quietly, a faint, dry chuckle shaking my chest. "No safehouse. No magic. And the entire Vegas underworld is probably going to be in a state of absolute chaos by sunset."
Rhea stirs, lifting her head to look at me. Her amber eyes are bright, a lazy, contented smile touching her lips. She reaches up, bopping my nose with one finger.
"We have a car parked about three miles from here," she says, her voice light. "And I still know how to hotwire a Mercedes if the keys are gone."
"A useful skill," I murmur, my smile widening. "And after that?"
"After that, we drive," she says, turning her face toward the endless expanse of the Nevada desert stretching out before us under the unsparing, brilliant sun. "We don’t have a history to lean on, Dante. We don’t have a destiny. We have to make it up as we go."
I pull her down for one last, quiet kiss—a soft, tender seal on our new, unwritten contract.
"Then let’s start driving," I say.
We have no history left to lean on. We have no magic to save us from tomorrow. We have only right now. And for the first time in five years, that is more than enough.
