Where forbidden tales are told.

The deep, bone-rattling toll of the iron bell from the forward cars shatters the vacuum.

    The zero-gravity snaps.

We drop like stones. My boots hit the grated floorboards hard, the sudden return of my own weight driving me to my knees. The heavy, pearl-encrusted silk skirts collapse around me. Beside me, Ronan hits the iron deck with a heavy, jarring thud, a sharp hiss escaping his teeth as the impact jars his shattered left arm.

The crystalline silence of the Stasis Car is dead. The deafening, relentless mechanical heartbeat of the train’s internal gears roars back to life, but the rhythm is frantic, aggressive. The ambient magic in the domed chamber shifts from neutral twilight to a hostile, blinding crimson.

On the brass control console in the center of the room, a sequence of jagged, ancient runes flashes like a warning siren.

The train’s architecture has registered the blood-moon bond we forged in the dark. It recognizes the biological tether between an alpha wolf and a vampire. But the system is built on the absolute law of the treaty. It demands true names. We gave it ciphers. We tried to trick a machine powered by time and blood, and the machine has found us guilty.

The heavy, lead-lined bulkhead doors at both ends of the car shudder. The mechanical deadbolts slide into place with a definitive, echoing slam. The locks glow with a searing red heat.

"The stasis field is collapsing," Ronan says, his voice a gravelly rasp. He uses his good arm to push himself up, his broad chest heaving under the torn linen shirt. "The train is isolating the anomaly. It’s locking us in until the eclipse ends."

I push myself to my feet, my hands trembling as I brush the ash from my stolen gown. I look up at the mirrored silver plates lining the upper curve of the wall. My reflection is back, complete and unbroken. The headless apparition is gone.

But a cold, horrifying logic begins to unspool in my mind.

I touch the weeping, blistered silver burn on my collarbone—the wound Ronan inflicted in the very first hour. I trace the rough, blackened edge of the scorched flesh.

    My pulse skips a beat.

The corpse under the bed in Car One. The real Princess of the Ashen Court. I had assumed it was her because her face was a flawless, rigid mirror of mine. I had spent three grueling weeks memorizing her every feature to carve it into my own flesh. But when we pulled her out from the shadows, I had seen a faint, blackened scar just above her collarbone.

At the time, I thought it was dirt. I thought it was a blemish on royal perfection.

"She had a burn," I whisper, the words tasting like copper.

Ronan turns his head, his golden eyes narrowing. "What?"

"The corpse in Car One," I say, my voice rising, the carefully constructed aristocratic drawl entirely abandoned. I point a shaking finger at my own neck. "She had a silver scorch mark on her collarbone. Exactly here. The exact same size."

He stares at me, the tactical calculation in his gaze hitting a wall.

I step backward, my spine hitting the cold brass of the locked door. "I didn’t have this burn when I boarded the train, Ronan. I only got it when you put your blade to my throat. A dead princess wouldn’t have a fresh silver burn."

The oxygen in the room thins. My lungs seize. The heavy pearls woven into my bodice suddenly feel like a hangman’s noose.

I am wearing the dead woman’s pearls. I am wearing her face.

But the dead woman wasn’t the Princess.

"It was me," I gasp, the realization hitting like physical shrapnel. "The assassin didn’t kill the royal decoy. They killed me."

The room spins. The mechanical crescent bite on the corpse’s neck. The headless reflection in the zero-gravity. The train isn’t hunting a foreign assassin. The train is hunting me, because I am already dead.

"The body in Car One is me from tomorrow," I breathe, my hands flattening against the iron wall to keep from falling. "The temporal recoil. The howl that dragged the train backward in Car Two… it dragged my corpse back to the beginning of the line."

Before Ronan can speak, the crimson light in the Stasis Car violent flickers.

The temporal friction we triggered by feeding the system false names rips a hole in the present. The air in the center of the domed chamber wavers, bending like light through water. The train’s gears scream as a massive, high-definition time-echo bleeds into existence.

It is a projection of Hour Eight. The Engine Car.

We are forced to watch our own tomorrow.

In the holographic blue mist, the Engine Car is a cathedral of grinding gears and molten silver. Standing at the center of the projection is the future version of myself. Her white silk gown is shredded, soaked in dark blood. She is lunging toward the massive, glowing core of the eclipse mechanism, her hands outstretched to take control of the train.

And standing directly behind her is Future Ronan.

He is not shielding her. He is not fighting the automated turrets.

He is holding a heavy, crescent-shaped iron cog ripped from the train’s gearbox.

"You can’t take the core, Vesper," Future Ronan says. His voice booms through the projection, distorted by temporal static but entirely devoid of mercy. "If a vampire commands the eclipse, my packs burn. I cannot let you reach it."

In the hologram, Future Vesper spins around, her eyes wide with a betrayal so absolute it fractures the air.

Future Ronan does not hesitate. He drives the jagged iron cog straight into the side of her neck.

The two mechanical crescents puncture deep. Blood sprays across the polished brass floor. Future Vesper collapses, her stolen face slackening into death.

In the projection, a deafening alarm shrieks. The train’s system registers the murder of the "bride" by the "groom". The treaty is officially shattered. The engine core flashes a blinding white. Future Ronan drops the bloody cog and falls to his knees, staring at his own hands. He realizes that by executing me to prevent a war, he has just triggered the train’s final fail-safe. He started the war himself.

He tilts his head back, and from his throat rips a howl of pure, world-ending grief and rage.

It is the exact howl we heard in Car Two. The howl that tore the train backward through time.

The blue mist of the projection shatters into a million floating sparks, vanishing into the cold air of the Stasis Car.

Silence crashes back over us. The revelation hangs in the crimson light, a suffocating, inescapable truth.

There is no mechanic. There is no hidden assassin from the Ashen Court. Ronan Vale brought me through these cars, shielded me with his body, and kissed me in the void, knowing the entire time that his military logic would eventually demand my death. He didn’t need me to draw out a killer. He needed me alive just long enough to reach the engine, so he could eliminate the vampire threat himself.

I look at the man standing three feet away.

Present Ronan is staring at the empty space where his future self just committed murder. The muscles in his jaw are ticking wildly. The sheer horror in his expression is real, but it is fleeting. The Butcher of the Silver Woods is a survivor first.

    He looks at me.

The golden warmth that had flooded his eyes in the zero-gravity is entirely gone, replaced by the cold, absolute calculation of an alpha prince staring at a tactical inevitability. If he lets me live, I take the core and doom his people. If he kills me, he dooms us both to the time loop.

But the projection showed him the path. The temporal loop demands to be closed.

His jaw locks. The hesitation vanishes.

Slowly, deliberately, Ronan reaches down with his uninjured right hand. His fingers close around the hilt of his silver longsword. He draws the blade with a sharp, ringing scrape of metal against leather.

He steps forward, raising the silver tip until it points directly at my chest, mirroring the exact, merciless stance of his phantom self.
