The heavy brass door of the train car slams shut, cutting off the deafening shriek of the hurricane like a severed nerve.
I collapse against the iron-riveted wall, my chest heaving, dragging in ragged mouthfuls of air that smell faintly of dried lavender and stale blood-wine. The silence inside the car is immediate and disorienting, a heavy, velvet-lined tomb suspended in the exact center of the supernatural storm. We have breached the eye of the hurricane.
Across the narrow aisle, Lucien drops a rusted iron crossbar over the door’s latch, his movements sluggish, entirely stripped of their usual preternatural grace. The third survival round—a labyrinth of submerged rail yards rigged with kinetic water mines—has nearly broken us both.
His midnight leather coat is torn to ribbons, hanging heavily off his broad shoulders, soaked through with the contaminated floodwaters of the Gulf. A jagged gash runs across his left bicep where he shielded me from flying shrapnel in the final sprint. For a vampire, he should be healing instantly, but the chaotic magic saturating the rain has slowed his regeneration to a crawl. The skin around the wound is gray, his breathing as heavy and labored as my own.
I slide down the wall until I hit the plush, rotting velvet of the floorboards. My body is a single, screaming ache. The silver scar on my left palm—the mark of our first exchange in the crypts—pulses with a dull, exhausted heat. My hemomantic reserves are entirely drained. The glowing, spatial map of the arena that I’ve been feeding to Lucien for the past three hours has flickered out, leaving nothing but an echoing emptiness in my skull.
"The wards are holding," Lucien rasps, turning away from the door. He leans his head back against the frosted glass of a window. Outside, the storm rages in a massive, spinning cylinder of black clouds and green lightning, but the sky directly above us is an eerie, bruised purple. "We are in the eye. The car is magically anchored. We have perhaps two hours before the back half of the eye-wall hits and the fourth round begins."
"Two hours," I whisper. The words feel like lead on my tongue. "I don’t think I have another round in me, Lucien. My blood is… it’s quiet. I can’t feel the water anymore."
Lucien opens his eyes, his storm-gray gaze finding me in the dim, golden light of the carriage’s emergency gas lamps. He pushes himself off the door and closes the distance between us, sinking to his knees on the velvet rug in front of me.
Up close, the toll of his treason is evident. By opening the royal hatch in the catacombs, he severed himself from the protective magic of House Vale. He is running on nothing but sheer will and the fading echoes of my blood.
"You are freezing, Zora," he says, his voice a low, rough rumble.
He reaches out, his cold, calloused fingers grazing the collar of my soaked canvas jacket. I flinch slightly, not from fear, but from the sudden, electric spark that jumps between our skin. The adrenaline of the gauntlet is crashing, leaving behind a raw, agonizing hyper-awareness of the man kneeling before me.
"We need to get you out of these wet clothes," he says, his eyes dropping to my shivering shoulders. "Your core temperature is dangerously low. If you go into hypothermic shock, your veins will constrict. Your magic will consume itself trying to keep your organs alive."
It is a tactical assessment, cold and practical, but his eyes are entirely dilated, the irises swallowed by black. The air in the narrow train car is suddenly thick, heavy with the ambient magic and a dark, undeniable gravity that has been building between us since the pumping station.
"I can’t move my arms," I confess, a humiliated tremor in my voice.
"Let me," he murmurs.
I nod, offering a silent, explicit surrender of control.
Lucien’s hands are remarkably gentle as he unbuckles the heavy utility belt at my waist, letting the rusted compass and my few surviving tools clatter to the floorboards. He grips the lapels of my soaked jacket and eases it off my shoulders, pulling the heavy, freezing fabric down my arms. I shiver violently as the cool, damp air of the carriage hits my thin, waterlogged undershirt.
He doesn’t stop there. He sheds his own ruined leather coat, letting it drop to the floor. Beneath it, his white linen shirt is plastered to his torso, translucent and clinging to the hard, sculpted lines of his chest and abdomen. He pulls the shirt over his head in one fluid motion, tossing it aside.
His skin is flawless pale marble, marred only by the sluggishly bleeding gash on his arm. He radiates a dense, vibrating energy—a predatory cold that somehow makes the air around him feel scorching hot.
"Come here," he says softly.
He shifts back against the velvet bench of the carriage, extending his legs, and pulls me forward into the space between his knees. I don’t resist. I am exhausted, desperate for any anchor in the spinning dark. I press my back against his bare chest. The shock of his cold skin against my shivering body should be agonizing, but it isn’t. It is an immediate, grounding relief.
He wraps his powerful arms around my waist, pulling me flush against him, sharing the immense, vibrating core of his supernatural energy.
I let my head fall back against his shoulder, my eyes slipping shut. The scent of him—ozone, dark spices, and the metallic tang of his blood—fills my lungs, intoxicating and entirely overwhelming.
"Your magic is depleted," Lucien murmurs, his lips brushing against the shell of my ear, sending a violent shiver down my spine that has nothing to do with the cold. "And I am blind to the storm without you. If we walk into the fourth round like this, my father’s games will tear us apart in minutes."
"I know," I whisper. I turn my head slightly, my cheek grazing the smooth, cold curve of his jaw. "You need to feed."
His arms tighten around me, an instinctual, possessive flex of muscle. "Zora—"
"Not a drop from my palm, Lucien," I say, my voice steadying, finding its steel. I open my eyes, looking at our reflection in the dark, rain-streaked window across the aisle. We look like a painting of a sacrifice, a human girl wrapped in the arms of a dark god. But I am not a victim, and he is not taking anything I am not freely giving. "A single drop won’t give you the strength you need to carry us through the eye-wall. And it won’t trigger the hemomantic feedback loop I need to recharge my sight."
I turn in his arms, shifting my weight until I am straddling his thighs, facing him. The proximity is devastating. My soaked undershirt clings to my breasts, my bare knees brushing against the heavy, soaked fabric of his dark trousers.
"Take from the vein," I command softly, reaching up to push the damp hair away from his forehead.
Lucien’s breath hitches. He stares at me, a profound, agonizing war playing out across his striking features. The rigid, aristocratic control of the Prince is fracturing, revealing the starving, desperate man beneath.
"If I take directly from the pulse," he rasps, his hands moving up from my waist to grip my hips, his long fingers biting gently into my flesh, "the connection will not just be a map, Zora. It will be absolute. It will tear down every mental wall you have. It will pull your grief, your terror, your memories. It will pull you."
"I know."
"I cannot guarantee I will be able to shield my own mind from you," he warns, his voice dropping an octave, vibrating with a dark, feral edge. "You will see everything I am."
"I have already seen you," I say, my thumbs tracing the sharp line of his cheekbones. "I am not afraid of you, Lucien. I trust you. Take what you need."
A low, fractured sound escapes his throat—something between a groan of absolute defeat and a growl of pure, unrestrained hunger.
He pulls me down.
His mouth crashes against my neck, right over the frantic, hammering pulse of my carotid artery. I gasp, arching my spine, my fingers twisting violently into his dark hair.
He doesn’t bite immediately. He opens his mouth against my skin, his tongue tracing the line of my vein, tasting the salt and the terrifyingly fast rhythm of my heart. The anticipation is a slow, agonizing torture. A heavy, pooling heat ignites low in my belly, radiating outward, entirely consuming the cold.
Then, his fangs slide free.
He gives me a fraction of a second to brace myself, and then he breaks the skin.
The pain is a sharp, brilliant flare, but it lasts only a heartbeat. The moment his venom mixes with my bloodstream, the hemomantic magic in my veins violently detonates.
A rush of pure, golden euphoria explodes behind my eyes. It is an aphrodisiac of staggering proportions, a biological override designed to make the prey surrender to the predator. But I am not prey. I am pushing back, forcing my spatial magic into the current of blood he is pulling from me.
I gasp loudly, my hips unconsciously grinding down against his lap. Lucien groans against my throat, his hands sliding frantically up my back, pulling me impossibly flush against his chest. I can feel the hard, thick ridge of his arousal pressing against the apex of my thighs through the wet fabric of our clothes, a heavy, urgent reality that shatters any remaining pretense of mere survival.
The physical pleasure is blinding. Every nerve ending in my body is electrified, vibrating at a frequency I have never experienced. But the mental connection is entirely devastating.
As he drinks, the walls of his mind collapse inward. I am suddenly flooded with his memories, a chaotic, rushing river of images. I see the gilded, suffocating cages of the Carnival Court. I feel the agonizing sting of his father’s magical reprimands. I feel the centuries of crushing, absolute loneliness—the terrifying reality of moving through an immortal life without a single soul who looks at him with anything other than terror or expectation.
And he feels me.
I feel him hit the bedrock of my grief. I feel him experience the memory of the night my mother died—the smell of the rain, the sound of the brass compass hitting the floor, the suffocating, crushing guilt that has defined every waking moment of my life since.
He doesn’t recoil. He doesn’t pull away.
Instead, Lucien shifts his grip, one hand anchoring the back of my head to keep my throat exposed, the other sliding down to aggressively grip the hem of my soaked undershirt.
"Lift your arms," he murmurs against my skin, his voice thick, distorted by the blood and the magic.
I comply, my body moving entirely on instinct. He strips the wet fabric over my head and throws it away, leaving me completely bare to the waist in the dim light. The cool air hits my flushed skin, but the heat radiating from him is a furnace.
Lucien pulls back from the bite just enough to look at me. His mouth is stained with my blood, his eyes swirling with a terrifying, beautiful mixture of predatory hunger and absolute reverence. He is healing. The gray tint of his skin is vanishing, flushed with the vibrant, pulsing life of my hemomancy. The gash on his bicep is knitting together right before my eyes.
"Tell me if it is too much," he whispers, his thumb brushing a stray tear from my cheek—a tear I didn’t even know had fallen. "Give me the word, Zora, and I will stop."
"Don’t you dare stop," I breathe, my hands dropping to the heavy silver buckle of his trousers.
I undo the clasp with trembling fingers. Lucien shudders, a violent tremor wracking his powerful frame. He catches my wrists, his grip iron-tight, his restraint snapping entirely.
In one fluid, explosive motion, he flips us, pinning my back against the plush velvet of the long passenger seat. I gasp as he crowds over me, a massive, immovable shadow. He works the remaining soaked fabric down my legs, tossing my heavy denim and undergarments to the floor. I am completely exposed, vulnerable, splayed beneath him on the dark red velvet.
He strips out of his own remaining clothes with a frantic, desperate efficiency.
When he comes back down over me, skin to skin, the friction is a jolt of lightning. His body is magnificent—hard, sculpted, and radiating the lethal power of an apex predator. But his hands, when they cup my face, are trembling.
"You are a terrifying creature, Zora Baptiste," he murmurs, his gaze sweeping over my bare chest, tracing the line of my collarbone down to my stomach, devouring every inch of me.
"Show me," I demand, arching up into his touch, my hands mapping the broad, muscular expanse of his back.
He parts my thighs with his knee, settling his heavy hips into the cradle of mine. He reaches between us, his long, calloused fingers finding my wet, aching center. He strokes me once, firmly, and I shatter, a ragged cry tearing from my throat. The hemomantic connection amplifies the sensation a hundredfold. I feel my own pleasure echoing back at me through his mind, a recursive loop of staggering intensity.
Lucien doesn’t make me wait. He aligns himself at my entrance, his jaw locked tight, his eyes burning into mine.
"Look at me," he commands, his voice a ragged rasp.
I lock my eyes with his storm-gray gaze.
He pushes inside me.
The stretch is deep, full, and entirely consuming. I cry out, my nails digging into his shoulders as he seats himself entirely to the hilt. The physical connection merges flawlessly with the magical one. My blood in his veins sings, glowing with a brilliant, blinding light in our shared mindscape. The map of the storm outside reignites, expanding outward in a massive, pulsing grid of spatial memory.
But it is entirely eclipsed by the rhythm he sets.
Lucien begins to move, pulling back and driving in with a heavy, relentless friction that steals the breath from my lungs. It is not gentle. It is urgent, desperate, a physical manifestation of the survival we have been fighting for since the games began.
"Lucien," I gasp, my legs wrapping tight around his waist, anchoring him deeper.
"I have you," he grunts, his control slipping. He drops his head, his mouth capturing mine in a bruising, ravenous kiss. I taste my own blood on his tongue, copper and salt, a primal feedback loop of sharing and consuming.
Every thrust sends a shockwave of pleasure through my nervous system. I can feel the exact moment his mental shields entirely disintegrate. Through the blood-bond, I feel his awe. He looks at my mind, at the iron-clad architecture of my willpower, and he does not see a frail human. He sees a queen. He sees an equal.
I am completely undone by it. To be seen so entirely, to have my darkest, most jagged edges witnessed and revered by the creature I was taught to hate—it shatters me.
The physical pressure building between my thighs spirals out of control. I am chasing the blinding light behind my eyes, my hips lifting to meet every brutal, perfect thrust.
"Zora," he groans against my mouth, his pace turning frantic, his muscles bunching beneath my hands as he chases his own release.
"Now," I sob, the command tearing from my throat. "Lucien, please—"
I break first. The climax hits me with the force of a tidal wave, a violent, arching spasm that wrings a scream from my lungs. The hemomantic magic in my blood surges, sending a shockwave of golden light through our shared connection.
Lucien roars, a deep, feral sound that vibrates through my chest. He drives into me one final, devastating time, his body going completely rigid as he spills his release deep inside me. I feel his climax as if it were my own—a brilliant, shattering release of tension, fear, and centuries of suppressed emotion.
We collapse against each other, chests heaving in the quiet dark of the train car.
The silence returns, heavy and ringing.
Lucien does not pull away. He slowly collapses his weight onto his forearms, burying his face in the crook of my neck, right over the bite mark he left. His breathing is ragged, his heart—normally a slow, quiet rhythm—hammering violently against my own.
For a long time, neither of us speaks. The magic slowly settles, the glowing map of the storm retreating to the edges of my consciousness, leaving behind a profound, terrifying quiet.
With agonizing care, Lucien shifts his weight, pulling out of me with a soft sound of reluctance. He moves to my side on the wide velvet seat, gathering my exhausted, boneless body entirely against his chest. He pulls one of the heavy velvet blankets from the back of the carriage and drapes it over us, trapping our shared heat.
His hand moves to my neck. His thumb gently, reverently strokes the raised, bruised flesh of the bite mark. His saliva contains a natural coagulant; the wound is already sealed, leaving behind two perfectly round, tender indentations.
"Does it hurt?" he asks softly, his voice rough.
"No," I whisper, turning my face to press my lips against his bare chest. "I feel… full. The magic is back."
"I saw it," he says, his hand dropping to run slowly, soothingly down the length of my spine. "I saw the map. I know the way through the fourth round."
He pauses, his fingers stalling at the small of my back. The physical aftercare is tender, grounding, but the emotional air is thick with the weight of what we just shared in our minds.
"I saw the compass, Zora," he whispers into the dark.
I stiffen slightly. I had pushed the memory of my mother’s death down for years, burying it beneath the necessity of leadership. But in the heat of the blood-exchange, I had lost control of the gates. He saw the rusted brass. He saw the crest of House Vale carved into the hilt of the blade that killed her.
I wait for the denial. I wait for the Prince to protect his bloodline, to tell me my memories are flawed, that the Court does not murder humans outside the arena.
Instead, Lucien’s arms tighten around me in a vice grip.
"I did not know," he says, his voice vibrating with a sudden, lethal rage—not at me, but at the empire he belongs to. "I swear to you, on the blood you just gave me, I did not know it was my father’s guard who took her."
I look up. His storm-gray eyes are locked on the ceiling of the carriage, burning with a cold, terrifying promise of violence. He doesn’t pity me. He is preparing for war.
A heavy, suffocating realization drops into the pit of my stomach, colder than the floodwaters outside.
I am lying naked in the arms of a vampire prince. I have bound my magic to his, traded my blood for his strength, and let him strip me bare in every conceivable way. I should be terrified of the vulnerability. I should be plotting how to use his newfound loyalty to save my people and escape.
But as I press my hand flat against his heart, feeling the steady, thrumming rhythm of the life I just restored to him, the truth crashes over me with the devastating force of a hurricane surge.
I don’t just need him for the map anymore.
I am falling in love with the monster who holds my life in his hands, and if he dies in the rounds to come, I know with absolute, horrifying certainty that I will not survive the storm without him.
