Where forbidden tales are told.

The agonizing shriek of a thousand burning armorers rips through the shed, shattering the quiet warmth of the dark.

It does not just echo in my ears; it vibrates through the marrow of my bones. Garam recoils violently. The tempered bronze of his skin flashes a sickly, blinding white, his massive hands flying to his temples as the sheer volume of the ambient memory crushes into his skull. The fragment of the iron crown in my hand is ice-cold, yet it burns with a malice so absolute I drop it into the dirt.

Before the metal even settles, the wooden walls of the shed explode inward.

Splinters rain down over us. Blinding torchlight floods the space, wiping out the shadows. I scramble to grab my sword, my bare feet slipping on the canvas, but heavy iron-shod boots are already swarming the floorboards. Hands grab my arms, twisting them behind my back with brutal efficiency, dragging me away from Garam. I fight, kicking out, my breath coming in jagged gasps, but there are too many of them. The King’s elite guard.

Through the chaos, a figure steps through the shattered doorway. The Head Eunuch.

He does not look at me. He carries a heavy, square box forged of dull, grey lead—the only metal dense enough to block magical resonance. With a sharp flick of the latch, he kicks the lid open.

Inside rests the rest of the crown. It is a massive, jagged halo of black iron, radiating a cold, suffocating pressure that instantly drops the temperature in the room.

Garam roars. It is not the sound of a man. It is the grinding, tectonic agony of a beast being crushed by the weight of a mountain. The proximity of the crown, even without him eating it, is overloading his senses with the screams of the dead. He falls to his hands and knees, the floorboards smoking beneath his palms as his internal furnace spirals out of control.

"Drag the armorer out," the eunuch commands, his voice entirely devoid of inflection.

The guards haul me into the freezing mud of the village square. The night wind bites into my bare chest. The villagers we had just saved by eating their weapons are being held back at spearpoint, forced to watch. I thrash against my captors, my eyes locked on the shed, waiting for Garam to tear through the wood, to unleash the inferno and burn these men to ash.

But he doesn’t. When two guards drag him out into the rain, he is stumbling. The eunuch walks beside him, holding the lead box open just enough to let the crown’s toxic resonance batter the Bulgasari into submission.

"On your knees, Han Muyeong," the eunuch says, gesturing to the guards. A heavy mailed fist slams into the back of my knees. I hit the mud hard.

The eunuch stops in front of me and lifts the crown from its lead prison.

Up close, in the harsh glare of the torches, the details of the cursed iron are excruciatingly clear. My breath hitches. I stare at the interlocking bands, the specific, counter-sunk rivets, the aggressive taper of the forward spikes designed to look like a sunburst. I know these angles. I know the exact mathematical ratio of the weight distribution.

    It is my blueprint.

Three years ago, I drafted a design for a ceremonial helm. The court told me the design was arrogant. They told me it was flawed, useless, and ordered it destroyed. Yet here it is, forged into a weapon of mass suffering, worn by the King’s authority.

"You always were a brilliant draftsman," the eunuch notes, catching the horrified recognition in my eyes. "The King admired your vision. He simply found a better material to cast it in. The bells of the northern monasteries."

Garam groans in the mud beside me, his hands digging into the earth. "Too loud," he grates out, his voice fracturing. "They are burning. The metal is melting with them inside."

I look at the eunuch, a cold, creeping dread paralyzing my lungs. "To melt a blessed temple bell, you need an unprecedented heat," I whisper, my voice trembling. "A standard royal forge cannot reach that temperature."

The eunuch smiles. It is a thin, bloodless stretching of the lips. "No. It cannot. It requires a sustained, contained inferno. A dual-chamber draft to recycle the oxygen. A pressurized heat trap to ensure nothing escapes."

The world drops out from under me.

    A dual-chamber draft. A pressurized heat trap.

I designed that. Five years ago. A theoretical furnace blueprint meant to forge unbreakable siege plating to protect our soldiers. I spent months perfecting the airflow, calculating exactly how to trap the heat so the fire would feed on its own exhaust, raising the temperature to catastrophic levels.

They didn’t just steal the design for the crown. They built my furnace. They built it at monastery scale.

They locked the rebel armorers and monks inside my masterpiece, and they ignited it.

The jigsaw pieces violently snap together, forming a picture of absolute horror. The screams Garam hears—the agony saturated into this iron—they are the final, desperate prayers of innocent men burning to death inside a crematorium of my own invention. I am the architect of their ash. My hands did not strike the match, but my mind built the hell they died in.

Nausea hits me like a physical blow. I dry-heave into the mud, my smooth, ruined fingers clawing at the freezing earth.

"He is starving, Muyeong," the eunuch says, turning his attention to the writhing monster. "And he is so entirely weak when he plays at being human."

The eunuch steps forward and presses the cold iron of the crown directly against Garam’s blistering shoulder.

Garam screams. The sound tears the air apart. The concentrated, distilled agony of my furnace floods instantly into the Bulgasari’s veins. The human shell we fought so hard to build, the man who just held me with such careful, devastating reverence, fractures.

The dark bronze skin turns to the color of dead, cold ash. The heavy, grinding resonance in his chest halts, replaced by the terrifying, hollow silence of a machine resetting.

"Garam!" I scream, fighting the guards, desperate to reach him, to touch him, to anchor him.

He stands up. His massive frame towers over the eunuch. But when he turns his head, the steady, amber warmth of his eyes is gone. They are a blinding, toxic, empty white. He looks at me, kneeling in the mud, weeping for the blood on my invisible hands, and there is absolutely no recognition in his gaze.

He turns his back to me and falls into step beside the Head Eunuch. The King’s weapon has returned to its master.
