Kurohane drags the heavy sliding doors shut, cutting off the balcony and the endless, violet ocean of the shifting Night Parade. The heavy iron latch falls into place with a definitive, ringing clack.
Instantly, the oppressive, sulfurous air of the yōkai capital vanishes.
We stand in a hidden inner chamber deep within his estate. There are no paper lanterns here, no floating fires reflecting the consensus of monsters. The only light comes from a single, low-burning hearth in the center of the tatami mats, casting long, wavering shadows across the unpainted cedar walls. The scent of crushed pine and ozone is gone, replaced by the clean, sharp aroma of white sage and old wood.
My heart hammers against my ribs, a frantic snare drum. The violet light outside means someone else is manipulating the Parade. A massive, unified vote is rewriting the reality of the capital, and I have lost control of the board. My entire survival mechanism—my ability to read a room, to manufacture a lie, to shape myself into the perfect, useful tool—is slipping through my fingers.
I straighten my spine, smoothing the front of my heavy silk robes. I reach for the mask of the imperial matchmaker.
"We must alert the Minamoto clan," I say, my voice steady, calculating the political vectors. "If we can convince them that the violet vote is a threat to their eastern territories, I can pivot the consensus back to—"
The words turn to ash on my tongue.
My throat locks. The muscles in my jaw seize with a sudden, violent cramp. I gasp, stumbling forward, my hands flying to my neck as the air is physically choked out of my lungs. It feels as though I have swallowed a mouthful of crushed glass.
Kurohane catches me before my knees hit the tatami.
His large hands grip my shoulders, hauling me upright. The heat radiating from his skin is a sudden, grounding anchor.
"Breathe," he commands, his dark velvet voice low and calm in the dim room. "Stop trying to formulate the lie, Reika. Let the strategy go. Swallow the manipulation, and your throat will open."
I stare at him, my eyes wide with panic. I force my mind to drop the political calculations. I stop trying to shape the next sentence into a weapon.
Instantly, the invisible grip on my windpipe shatters.
I drag a massive, shuddering breath of air into my lungs, coughing, clutching the lapels of his dark haori for balance.
"What… what is this?" I rasp.
"The Sanctuary of the Unspoken," Kurohane replies softly, not letting go of my shoulders. "An old, deeply paranoid piece of magic built by the first emperor who bound me. In this room, the tongue cannot weave a falsehood. Politeness, social pleasantries, political deflections—they are all processed by the wards as lies. If you try to speak anything other than your absolute, unvarnished truth, the magic will choke you on your own words."
I step back, breaking his hold. A cold terror washes over me, far worse than the violet light outside.
My entire identity is built on social pleasantries. I survived my mother’s abandonment by becoming the exact reflection of what every powerful lord in the capital needed to see. If I cannot lie, if I cannot manipulate the space between people, I have no face. I am entirely, utterly useless.
"Why would you bring me here?" I whisper. The words slip out effortlessly, because the terror driving them is entirely real.
Kurohane stands before the low hearth. The dim orange light traces the sharp, aristocratic lines of his jaw and the fathomless black of his eyes. The shadow of the nue does not pool beneath him here; the magic of the sanctuary seems to suppress the beast, leaving only the man.
"Because outside those doors, you are the architect of a hundred lies," he says. He reaches up, slowly unfastening the silk ties of his haori. The heavy garment slips from his broad shoulders, pooling on the floor. "You wear your usefulness like a suit of armor. I brought you here because I want the armor gone."
"I am nothing without the armor," I snap, my voice trembling. The sanctuary magic does not stop the sentence, validating the tragic, pathetic truth of it. "If I am not useful, Kurohane, I do not exist."
He takes a step toward me. Then another.
"That is the lie your mother taught you," he murmurs, stopping mere inches away. He looks down at me, the intensity in his gaze stripping away the air in the room. "The court only values you for the consensus you can manufacture. But I do not care about the court. I do not care about the Emperor, or the Minamoto, or the political leverage of our betrothal."
He raises a hand. His knuckles brush the side of my neck, right over the frantic, leaping pulse in my jugular.
"I care," he whispers, "about the woman who bit my lip until I bled because she refused to be a hollow doll."
A shiver wrecks my spine. The contact is electric, burning straight through my skin and sinking into the marrow of my bones. In this room, where every word must be true, the absolute sincerity of his declaration is a physical weight. He is not playing a power game. He is not manipulating the matchmaker. He is looking at me.
"Reika," he says, his voice dropping to a rough, gravelly register. "May I touch you?"
The rule of the sanctuary hangs between us. I cannot say yes to placate him. I cannot say yes to secure his loyalty for Haruki’s sake. If I agree, it must be because I, Tachibana Reika, want his hands on my body with an absolute, selfish hunger.
I look up into his fathomless black eyes. The phantom scent of winter plum—the ghost of my past, of my mother turning away—evaporates, burned to nothing by the raw, suffocating heat radiating from his chest.
"Yes," I breathe.
The word does not choke me. It rings in the quiet room, bright and sharp as a struck bell.
Kurohane exhales a harsh breath. His hands slide from my neck to the lapels of my heavy ceremonial robes. He does not tear at the fabric. He moves with a deliberate, agonizing reverence, undoing the complex silk knots one by one. The slow slide of the silk falling from my shoulders exposes my collarbones to the cool air, leaving me in nothing but my thin, white linen under-robe.
The black demon-tally mark inked into the flesh beneath my collarbone is stark against my pale skin. He traces it with the pad of his thumb. The touch sends a violent, liquid heat straight down to my stomach.
"You are shaking," he observes quietly.
"I am terrified," I confess, because the room demands it. "I have never wanted anything just for myself."
"Then start now."
His hands span my waist, his long fingers pressing into the dip of my spine, and he pulls me flush against him.
The collision of our bodies is a sensory explosion. The heat of him is a furnace. Through the thin linen of my robe, I can feel the hard, muscular planes of his chest, the jagged ridges of the silver binding runes carved into his skin, and the heavy, thudding rhythm of his heart.
He tilts my chin up and brings his mouth down on mine.
There is no hesitation, no holding back. The kiss is deep, devouring, and devastatingly real. He tastes of dark tea and ozone. My lips part under the gentle, demanding pressure of his mouth, and the sweep of his tongue against mine makes my knees buckle. He catches my weight effortlessly, his grip on my waist tightening, anchoring me to the earth as the world spins wildly out of focus.
I slide my arms around his neck, my fingers tangling in the thick, dark silk of his hair. I pull him closer, desperate for the friction, desperate to erase the remaining sliver of space between us.
His mouth leaves mine, trailing a path of damp, burning kisses down the line of my jaw, moving to the sensitive skin of my neck. I let out a soft, broken sound, my head falling back to give him better access. His teeth scrape lightly against my pulse point.
"Tell me what you want," he murmurs against my throat, his breath hot on my skin.
"You," I gasp, my hands sliding down to grip the lapels of his linen kosode. I pull the fabric apart, pushing it off his shoulders so his chest is entirely bare. "I want you."
He catches me behind the knees and lifts me into his arms. He crosses the short distance to the wide futon laid out near the hearth, laying me down against the dark silk sheets before following me down.
His weight settles over me, caging me in, a heavy, magnificent pressure. He props himself up on his forearms, looking down at my flushed face. His eyes are entirely black now, dilated with a raw, predatory hunger, yet his movements remain fiercely, carefully controlled.
He reaches down, his fingers catching the hem of my linen robe. He pulls it up, dragging the fabric slowly over my thighs, my hips, baring my skin to the ambient glow of the hearth. The air in the room is cool, but everywhere he touches me, my skin feels as though it is melting.
His calloused palm slides up the inside of my thigh.
I arch off the futon, a sharp gasp tearing from my lips. The touch is direct, intimate, and so electrifying it bypasses every intellectual defense I possess. My hands fly to his shoulders, my nails biting into the smooth, hot skin over his collarbones.
"Kurohane," I plead, my voice fractured.
"I am here," he whispers. He shifts his weight, settling between my parted thighs. The undeniable, rigid heat of his arousal presses intimately against my center through the layers of his dark trousers. The friction of his hips shifting against mine draws a low, desperate whine from the back of my throat.
He lowers his head, capturing my mouth in another bruising, deep kiss while his hand moves between us, finding the slick, aching heat of me.
His fingers stroke me, finding the exact rhythm that makes my vision go white at the edges. The pleasure is absolute, a blinding, physical wave that drowns out the capital, the Night Parade, the violet lanterns, and the scaffolding of lies I have built my life upon. My hips roll upward instinctively, chasing his touch, begging for the culmination that is hovering just out of reach.
I break the kiss, gasping for air, staring up at his handsome, strained face. The silver runes on his chest catch the firelight, a roadmap of his lifelong imprisonment.
I reach up, pressing my palm flat against his bare chest, right over his heart.
"I trust you," I whisper.
The words leave my mouth freely. The sanctuary magic does not stop them. It is the purest, most terrifying truth I have ever spoken. I am giving him the ultimate weapon—my absolute, unshielded vulnerability. "For the first time in my life, I don’t need to be a mirror. I don’t need to manipulate you. I am just Reika, and I am yours."
The silence in the room stretches for one, agonizing heartbeat.
Beneath my palm, Kurohane’s heart stutters.
It is a microscopic hesitation. A skipped beat. His jaw tightens, a fraction of a millimeter. The black of his eyes wavers, and in that infinitesimal gap, I see a shadow cross his expression—a shadow of guilt, of cold, calculated withholding.
The sanctuary magic hums in the air around us. It does not choke him, because he hasn’t spoken a lie. But the magic resonates with the void of the truth he is actively burying.
The blinding haze of pleasure evaporates, replaced instantly by a freezing, visceral shock of adrenaline.
He is hiding something.
He is looking at me, stripped bare, offering him my absolute soul, and he is holding a catastrophic variable behind his teeth.
Kurohane leans down, attempting to capture my mouth again, attempting to push past the hesitation with physical heat.
I slam both hands against his chest and shove.
The sudden, violent rejection catches him entirely off guard. He is thrust backward, his weight shifting off me as he catches himself on his knees at the edge of the futon.
I scramble backward, pulling the crumpled linen robe down to cover my thighs, my breath coming in harsh, jagged gasps. My skin is still flushed, still burning with the heavy, pulsing ache of near-culmination, but my mind is crystal clear, freezing over with the instinct of a cornered animal.
Kurohane stares at me, his chest heaving, his eyes wide with a dangerous mix of unspent lust and sudden alarm.
"Reika," he starts, reaching a hand out toward me.
"Don’t touch me," I snarl, slapping his hand away. The words echo off the cedar walls, hard and true.
I pull my knees to my chest, putting a physical barrier between us. The intimacy of the room, the beautiful, raw honesty we just built, lies shattered on the tatami mats like broken glass.
"You didn’t say it back," I whisper, my voice shaking with a terrifying, hollow rage. "I gave you the absolute truth. I gave you everything. And your heart skipped a beat."
Kurohane’s jaw locks. The mask of the calculating prince, the predator who plays games with the capital’s dreams, snaps back over his features. The vulnerability is gone.
"What aren’t you telling me?" I demand, the cold reality of the situation sinking its claws into my throat. The violet light outside. The manipulation of the Parade. "What do you know that you are deliberately keeping out of this room?"
