Where forbidden tales are told.

The architecture of the church finally surrenders to the architecture of the earth.

The slick, claustrophobic obsidian of the upper tunnels fractures, opening into the true heart of the red mountain. There are no inquisitors down here. The holy tuning forks cannot penetrate the sheer density of the magnetic field wrapping around the planet’s core. The air does not just carry heat; it carries mass. It is a thick, atmospheric soup of latent draconic magic, sulfur, and bruised amber light bleeding upward from the magma lakes miles below.

I step out onto the jagged precipice of the central vault. The physical laws forged by the priests do not apply in this depth. The heavy iron spikes driven into my forelegs left phantom aches in my human flesh, but in this chamber, the crushing gravity of my captivity unravels. The ambient magic is so dense it pushes back against the weight of the body. Dust motes do not fall; they hang suspended in the molten air, drifting in slow, lazy spirals.

Eira steps out onto the ledge beside me. She does not gasp at the sheer drop. She looks at the floating embers. She lifts a hand, and a flake of glowing ash settles on her palm, cooling instantly against her skin without burning her. The logic of this place is absolute: the mountain does not harm what the dragon claims.

She takes another step toward the edge. The rock crumbles beneath her leather boot.

    She pitches forward.

I catch her. I do not grab her arm. I step off the precipice with her, wrapping my arms entirely around her waist, pulling her back against my chest as we drop into the abyss.

    But we do not fall.

The magnetic resonance of the core catches us. We sink, drifting downward with the agonizing slowness of a leaf in heavy water. Eira cries out, her hands flying up to grip my forearms where they are crossed over her ribs. Her spine arches backward, pressing flush against my sternum. The sudden, overwhelming friction of her body against mine sends a violent spike of heat straight through my blood.

In the weightless dark, surrounded by the slow-drifting embers, I bury my face in the curve of her neck. I stop suppressing my core temperature. I let the draconic heat bleed through my skin, wrapping around her in the freezing subterranean dark, turning my body into a living furnace. She shivers, but it is not from the cold. She tilts her head back, granting me the vulnerable line of her throat.

Her pulse hammers against my lips. It is frantic, terribly fragile, and entirely mine. The iron church above reduced her to a defect, an invisible girl singing wrong notes in the back row. Here, suspended in the molten womb of the world, she is the exact center of gravity. I turn her in my arms, the weightless environment offering no resistance. She faces me, her chest heaving, her eyes wide and dark in the amber glow.

I slide my hands up her jaw, my thumbs tracing the line of her cheekbones. She does not pull away. She leans into the scalding heat of my palms. Her hands come up to grip my shoulders, anchoring herself to the monster the world told her to fear. The space between us vanishes. The kiss is not hesitant; it is a collision. It tastes of sulfur, copper, and the desperate, breathless realization that the dark is safer than the light. We drift in the heavy air, tangled together, every point of contact a spark of absolute, terrifying possession.

She pulls back, just enough to breathe, her forehead resting against mine.

She hums. It is a low, trembling vibration at the back of her throat. A perfect, resolved major chord. It is not the dissonant weapon she used to shatter my iron. It is a sound of pure, unadulterated comfort.

The acoustic resonance hits the ambient magic of the vault. The air shimmers. The heavy, oppressive weight of the church’s residual wards—the lingering pressure in the stone—dissolves into nothing. The air turns sweet, the sulfur fading into the scent of rain on hot stone. It is a victory so quiet it feels like a thief’s prize. We are suspended in the deep earth, entirely untouched by the inquisitors, the priests, or the iron. We broke the locks, and the magic did not demand a toll.

I brush a tangled lock of hair from her sweat-damp forehead. "We have the mountain," I whisper against her mouth. "They cannot reach you down here."

Eira smiles, a soft, breathless thing. She lifts her hand, the one bearing the pink scorch mark of my collarbone, and traces the line of my jaw. "That chord," she murmurs, her brow furrowing slightly. "The progression… it shifts the magnetic…"

    She stops.

Her hand freezes on my jaw. The smile falters, sliding off her face like water over glass. She blinks, staring at my throat, her pupils dilating in sudden, blank confusion.

    "Eira?"

She drops her hand. She looks at her own fingers, then out at the floating embers. "The progression," she says again, her voice thin. "I… I used a…"

She cannot name it. The musical terminology, the exact phrasing she has studied since she was a child, the very name of the note she just sang to free us—it is gone. Excised. Erased from her mind with surgical precision.

The blood freezes in my veins. The magic did not spare us. It just waited for the deepest, most vulnerable moment to collect its fee. The locks of the church demand a piece of the soul for every vibration of power. She gave up a piece of her music to buy us this peace.

I grip her face, forcing her to look at me, panic flaring in my chest for the first time in three centuries. "Eira, look at me."

Before she can focus on my eyes, the bedrock directly above our heads lets out a deafening, catastrophic groan.

The suspended gravity in the chamber violently snaps. We plummet ten feet, crashing onto a protruding shelf of basalt. I throw myself over her, shielding her body with mine as the rock rains down.

A sound drops from the ceiling. It is not the scrape of inquisitors’ boots.

    It is ten thousand voices.

The Great Choir has been activated. A massive, unified, harmonic weapon forged by the High Priest, channeled straight down the ventilation shafts into the core of the mountain. The sheer acoustic pressure of the hymn hits me like a physical hammer, driving me to my knees, crushing the breath from my lungs. The amber light of the magma violently flickers.

The warmth between us is obliterated by the freezing, holy cadence of the slaughter.
