Aeralis Stadium at midnight was a cathedral of suspended violence. Above the sprawling, open-air launch grid, the artificial supercell had been cranked into a green-black nightmare, churning with horizontal lightning that snapped across the sky like cracking whips. The roars of a hundred thousand spectators bled into the endless, deafening thunder, vibrating through the rain-slicked metal under Mara Vey’s boots.
This was the Semifinal Night-Circuit. The air tasted of ozone, sulfur, and desperation.
Standing in the floodlit launch paddock of Lane 1, Mara ignored the blinding flashes of the media drones hovering beyond the safety mesh. She kept her focus entirely on her copper-rune glider wings, her fingers moving with rapid, practiced precision as she adjusted the heavy-gauge conductive rigging. For this heat, she was calibrating the artificial spars not for agility, but for maximum electrical absorption. She tightened the bolts along her shoulder harness, the phantom ache of her long-severed natural wings flaring in time with the pulsing thunder above.
"The absorption threshold is set to redline," Mara said, her voice carrying over the din of the paddock via their private comms channel.
Kade Orun stepped up beside her. His dense, natural black wings were folded tightly against his broad back, shedding the torrential rain in dark, shimmering sheets. He wore his rescue captain’s harness, the heavy-duty anchor command baton secured at his thigh. The silver-flecked gray of his eyes was narrowed, tracking the lethal arcs of voltage dancing between the six official gates suspended over the abyss.
"If we overdraw the runes, the copper will melt straight through your flight suit," Kade warned, his voice a low, steady anchor in the chaos of her mind. "Are you absolutely sure about this route, Mara?"
She turned to him, the rain plastering dark strands of hair to her cheek. After everything they had survived—after the bitter betrayals, the blackmail that had forced his testimony against her, and the devastating memory she had sacrificed in the recovery bay just hours ago to restore his trust—there were no more secrets between them. They knew the truth now. The Storm League wasn’t just a sporting syndicate; it was a parasite. The central lift-cores keeping the wealthy Upper Strata afloat were gorging on the emotional memories harvested from the athletes, while the Lower Reach was being left to sink.
"The League’s memory-harvesting sensors are wired into the official track," Mara said, tapping the modified casing of her right-wrist stormband. Inside its digital housing was the explosive telemetry data she had captured from the echo-cloud in the previous heat. "If we fly the marked gates and take first place, the storm-core will rip another memory out of you. We can’t afford that. And we can’t afford to lose."
Kade reached out, his large, calloused hand covering her high-conductivity rigging glove. The heat of his palm bled through the wet leather, a grounding, undeniable comfort. "The Forbidden Gate is an unstable storm-eye, Mara. It’s unmonitored because it’s a structural anomaly. The voltage inside that pocket is completely unregulated."
"I know," Mara said, stepping closer to him, letting the proximity of his body shield her from the biting wind. "It’s off Turn Four. We break from the track, dive into the blind spot, and bypass the sensors entirely. The copper wings will act as a lightning rod. If we can absorb the raw voltage and survive it, we can channel the energy into a stadium-wide frequency override. We dump the telemetry data directly into the hologlyph screens."
Kade stared down at her, his jaw set, the electrical burn scars along his forearms stark in the green flashes of lightning. He didn’t ask if she could fly it. He didn’t question her skill. The trust she had bought back with her own memories was absolute and unyielding.
"We expose the ledger," Kade said, a fierce, dangerous light igniting in his eyes. He squeezed her hand, his thumb tracing the edge of her wristband. "Let’s burn their kingdom down."
The warning klaxons shrieked across the stadium, a massive, atonal blast that signaled the one-minute launch window. The top four teams in the league were lined up on the grid, their gliders and wings locked into the catapult rails.
Mara pulled her goggles down, the amber-tinted lenses instantly projecting the tempest relay telemetry over her field of vision. She locked her boots into the launch stirrups, engaging the magnetic seals. Behind her, Kade took his position as her anchor, his boots locking into the rear struts, his massive black wings expanding to their full eight-foot span to catch the artificial updraft.
"Circuit linked," Kade’s voice rumbled in her ear, his heart rate syncing with hers on the stormband display.
"Hold my pressure," Mara breathed.
The starting cannon fired, a concussive blast that rattled her teeth.
The catapults disengaged, and Team Vey-Orun was violently hurled into the open sky.
The sheer force of the launch pinned Mara back against the cockpit bracing, her artificial wings snapping open to catch the violent, swirling winds. Instantly, the supercell swallowed them. The rain was blinding, coming down in solid sheets that felt like flying through an ocean. Green and black clouds rolled like bruised flesh, illuminated by jagged veins of violet lightning.
To her left, the Lane 2 and Lane 3 teams were already flying aggressively, their anchors generating massive thrust to push their pilots toward Gate One.
"Drafting!" Kade called out. Mara felt the sudden, immense surge of forward momentum as Kade’s natural wings caught the turbulent air, converting the chaotic storm-shear into a clean, driving thrust. The phantom nerves in her missing wings hummed in perfect synchronization with his movements. She banked hard, riding his momentum, threading her copper glider through a narrow gap between two colliding thunderheads.
They sliced through Gate One in third place, the sensor array flashing green as they passed. A jolt of ambient electricity surged through the copper spars, but Mara bled it off through the exhaust vents.
"Gate Two is shifting!" Kade warned, his voice tight with exertion.
Ahead of them, the living thunder-gate was drifting erratically in the gale-force winds. The Lane 4 team attempted to cut the corner, but a sudden downdraft slammed their anchor into the gate’s outer ring. Sparks showered the night sky, and the team spun out of control, their emergency air-bags deploying as they plummeted toward the lower safety mesh.
"Hold the line!" Mara shouted, pushing the control yoke forward. She aimed perfectly for the dead center of the shifting ring. They tore through Gate Two, the air pressure dropping so rapidly that her ears popped. They were now in second place, closing the gap on the lead team.
Gate Three was a brutal vertical climb. Kade poured every ounce of his strength into the ascent, his black feathers cutting the air with the sound of tearing silk. Mara trimmed the copper runes, maximizing their aerodynamic profile. They crested the gate side-by-side with the leaders, the stadium crowds screaming so loud they could hear it over the thunder.
"Turn Four is coming up!" Mara yelled, her eyes locked on the swirling, impenetrable wall of green-black clouds to the outer edge of the marked track. The Forbidden Gate wasn’t a constructed ring; it was a wild, churning vortex of uncontained storm-energy that the League couldn’t control.
"On your mark, Pilot!" Kade roared back.
"Banking… now!"
Instead of following the lead team into the illuminated, sensor-heavy path of the official track, Mara threw her entire body weight against the yoke. The copper glider snapped to the right, violently breaking formation.
The stadium commentators erupted into a frenzy over the public address system, their voices echoing through the tempest. "Team Vey-Orun is breaking the circuit! They’re flying completely off-track! Where is she going?!"
They plunged into the darkness of the unmonitored storm-eye.
The noise vanished, replaced by a terrifying, high-pitched static whine. The air inside the Forbidden Gate was heavy, viscous, and saturated with raw, unregulated voltage. It tasted like battery acid and copper. Without the League’s dampeners, the turbulence was catastrophic. The glider shuddered violently, the copper-rune spars glowing a blinding, incandescent orange as they began to absorb the ambient electricity.
"Mara!" Kade shouted, his voice cracking with strain. "The voltage—it’s tearing the feathers from my wings! The pressure is too high!"
She glanced back. Arcs of raw lightning were coiling around Kade’s black wings, the electricity threatening to fry his nervous system and shatter his bones. The mechanical shielding wasn’t enough. They were going to be ripped apart by the sheer atmospheric density of the storm-eye.
"Drop your harness locks!" Mara commanded, her hands flying over the control panel to disengage the automated safety tethers separating the pilot and anchor bays. "We have to share the load! Give me your hands!"
"If I let go of the struts, we lose thrust!"
"If you don’t let go, you’ll burn alive! Trust me, Kade!"
Kade didn’t hesitate. He unclipped his safety harness, leaning over the narrow divider separating their seats. The wind howled, trying to rip him backward, but he fought through the gale, reaching out over her shoulders.
Mara let go of the primary flight yoke. She reached up, grabbing both of Kade’s hands in mid-air.
Skin met skin.
The moment their bare wrists locked together, the biometric sensors in their stormbands shrieked, registering a dual-pilot calibration override. Deep, voluntary intimacy in the heart of the tempest. A shockwave of pure energy blasted outward from their linked hands.
Suddenly, the violent, tearing winds around them simply stopped.
They had created a massive "still-air pocket," a phenomenon born of their intense, skin-to-skin connection and synchronized heartbeats. Within the pocket, the atmosphere dropped to absolute zero pressure. The deafening roar of the Forbidden Gate faded into a profound, breathless silence. They were suspended in the eye of the storm, perfectly still, perfectly aligned.
Kade’s chest heaved against her back, his breath hot against her cold, wet neck. His fingers intertwined with hers, his grip a lifeline of raw, desperate affection and unbreakable trust. Mara could feel his heartbeat hammering against her own, a steady, furious rhythm that anchored her to the sky. She didn’t just feel the controls of her ship; through his skin, she felt the very currents of the storm, mapping the electrical pathways of the vortex.
"I have you," Kade whispered, his lips brushing the shell of her ear. "Channel it, Mara. All of it."
"Brace yourself," Mara said, her eyes burning with amber light.
Still holding his left hand, Mara used her right to slam the yoke forward. The still-air pocket acted as a perfect conductive vacuum. The copper-rune wings drew in a massive, blinding bolt of raw lightning from the heart of the vortex. The electricity surged through the spars, bypassing Kade’s natural wings entirely, flowing through their linked hands, and supercharging the glider’s propulsion drive.
They didn’t just fly out of the Forbidden Gate. They were fired out of it like a railgun slug.
Team Vey-Orun blasted back into the stadium airspace, a comet of copper and black tearing across the night sky. They shattered the sound barrier, the sonic boom echoing off the suspended residential islands of the Upper Strata.
They blew past the lead team in a blur of incandescent speed.
"Now!" Mara screamed, her thumb smashing the transmission trigger on her stormband.
The raw, unregulated voltage they had stolen from the Forbidden Gate surged through the stadium’s network, acting as a carrier wave for the encrypted telemetry data Mara had harvested.
Across the massive expanse of Aeralis Stadium, the towering hologlyph screens flickered. The looping advertisements for luxury sky-yachts and Upper Strata real estate glitched, dissolving into heavy digital static.
Then, the truth appeared.
The screens ignited with the Storm League’s secret energy ledger. It was undeniable, presented in stark, glaring red and blue graphics. Millions of spectators watched as the live telemetry displayed the city’s power grid. The graphics showed the massive reserves of harvested emotional energy bypassing the Lower Reach entirely, flowing upward to overcharge the luxury grids of the elite, while the structural lift-cores of the slums were intentionally starved, operating at a critical fourteen percent capacity.
The commentators fell dead silent. The stadium crowd, previously roaring for blood and speed, fell into a stunned, breathless hush as the sheer scale of the corruption was laid bare in front of them. The League wasn’t protecting the city. It was holding the working class hostage.
Mara and Kade crossed the finish line of Gate Six, the checkered hologlyphs flashing wildly around them.
The public scoreboard overriding the hijacked screens confirmed it: Team Vey-Orun finished in First Place. They had shattered the heat time. But because they had bypassed the physical sensors of the first five gates, the system registered no official track record.
There was no blinding flash from the storm-core. There was no agonizing cognitive wipe. Kade’s memories remained entirely his own.
Mara pulled back on the air-brakes, the copper wings flaring wide as they bled off their massive speed. They descended rapidly, the glider’s landing skids slamming hard into the rain-slicked stadium mesh of the recovery paddock. The impact rattled Mara to her bones, but she held the yoke steady until they ground to a complete halt.
For a second, there was only the sound of the rain drumming against the metal deck and their own ragged, synchronized breathing.
Then, the stadium exploded.
It wasn’t a cheer for a race won. It was a roar of collective fury and vindication from the tens of thousands of Lower Reach citizens packed into the cheap seats. They were chanting her name, chanting Kade’s name, a tidal wave of sound that shook the very foundations of the arena.
Mara hit the quick-release on her harness. Before she could even turn around, Kade was out of his restraints. He grabbed her by the waist, pulling her out of the pilot’s seat and hauling her flush against his chest.
His black wings wrapped around them both, shielding them from the rain and the prying lenses of the drones. In the dark, warm cocoon of his feathers, Kade looked down at her, his gray eyes burning with fierce, unbridled pride. He didn’t say a word. He just crashed his mouth down on hers.
Mara kissed him back with everything she had, her hands tangling in the straps of his rescue harness. It wasn’t the tentative, guilt-ridden touch of their past, nor the desperate, survival-driven contact of their previous laps. This was a claiming—an absolute, unapologetic alignment of their bodies and their souls. They were partners. They had taken on the League’s impossible game, broken the rules, and survived with their minds and their hearts intact.
When they finally broke apart, both gasping for air, Kade rested his forehead against hers. "Rank number two overall," he murmured, a wild grin breaking across his scarred face. "We’re in the Championship Final, Mara. And they didn’t take a damn thing from us."
"We showed them," Mara breathed, her heart soaring as she listened to the crowd chanting for the Lower Reach. "The whole city knows. Vance can’t hide behind the spectacle anymore."
But as the words left her mouth, a horrific, groaning screech of rending metal echoed from beneath their feet.
The embrace shattered. Kade threw his wings open, his balance faltering as the entire stadium floor violently pitched to the side.
Mara dropped to one knee, her hands scrambling for purchase on the wet mesh. The cheers of the crowd morphed instantly into screams of genuine terror. The massive suspension cables connecting the stadium island to the central lift-core snapped tight, vibrating with a catastrophic resonance.
Then, the floor dropped.
It was a terrifying sensation of absolute weightlessness. The outer edge of the stadium island plummeted ten feet straight down into the clouds, before slamming to a halt with a concussive shock that threw medics and engineers off their feet across the paddock. The massive hologlyph screens flickered and died, plunging the arena into emergency red lighting.
"What did you do?!" a voice shrieked over the comms. It was Director Vance, his audio channel bleeding into their private frequency, his tone laced with venomous panic. "You bypassed the harvest! You fools! The system is starving!"
Mara looked up, her blood turning to ice.
It was a false victory.
She looked at the failing lift-core in the distance, the realization hitting her with the force of a physical blow. The League hadn’t just hoarded the energy. Director Vance and the Council had fundamentally engineered the city’s lift-cores to fail immediately without the high-voltage emotional memories harvested from the lap records. They had built a system with no safety buffers, creating a completely artificial, immediate dependency on the sport. By bypassing the harvest to save Kade’s mind, they had inadvertently pulled the plug on the city’s stabilizers.
"Mara," Kade said, his voice entirely devoid of the triumph they had shared just moments ago.
He was staring at his left wrist. The blue-and-white display of his rescue captain’s stormband was flashing violently, a priority-one emergency override signaling directly from the underground rescue clinics of his home district.
He tapped the receiver, projecting the holographic audio feed into the space between them.
"Captain Orun, this is Sector Four actual," a panicked, static-laced voice cried out. "The main lift-core just suffered a massive brownout! The foundational tethers are snapping! We are experiencing structural shear across the entire district!"
Kade’s face went pale. "Report status. Are the secondary capacitors holding?"
"Negative, Captain! The Council has locked us out of the reserve grid! The telemetry is redlining. If the Championship Final tomorrow doesn’t generate a massive power surge—a harvest bigger than anything this League has ever seen—the entire Lower Reach residential district is going to plummet into the sea."
The transmission cut out, leaving only the sound of the howling storm.
Mara stared at Kade, the cold rain washing away the heat of their victory. The League had trapped them. Tomorrow, in the Final, they wouldn’t just be racing for a trophy, or even for their own memories. If they didn’t feed the monstrous machine they had just exposed, millions of innocent people would die.
