"Take the name, Idris. Do it now."
The command echoes through the chaotic, superheated roar of the Astrolabe, cutting through the agonizing static of the six syllables tearing my mind apart. Samir’s voice is perfectly steady. He is offering his jugular, his pulse hammering against my bloodied lips, a frantic, heavy drumbeat begging me to end his life.
He is an executioner, trained to view life as an equation. One mortal heartbeat in exchange for the survival of the Aestival Empire. It is cold, flawless tactical logic.
And it is a logic I utterly reject.
A feral, guttural snarl tears from my scorched throat. It is not the sound of a starving predator; it is the roar of a king who refuses to be subjugated by a rigged game. I do not bite down. Instead, I violently wrench my head back, tearing myself away from the maddening, intoxicating scent of his pulse. I slam my hands onto his chest, shoving him away from me with enough force to send him skidding backward across the blistering iron grate.
"No!" I roar, the word magnified by the volatile magic inside me, shaking the massive brass mirrors arrayed above us. "I am the sovereign of the Night Court! I dictate the terms of my own survival, Executioner, and I will not buy my crown with your blood!"
Samir hits the deck, his dislocated left shoulder slamming against the iron. He cries out, a sharp hiss of pain, and looks at me with wide, horrified eyes. He does not understand. To his pragmatic mind, I have just condemned us both to death.
But he is wrong. To take his life, to murder my fated anchor out of sheer desperation, would be the true defeat. Malek wants to turn me into a machine, a mindless conduit of power driven only by instinct and survival. If I kill Samir, the machine wins. If I kill the only man who has ever seen the fractured, desperate truth of my soul and chose to anchor it anyway, there will be nothing left of Prince Idris to wear the crown.
I would rather be ash.
Above us, the massive gears of the Astrolabe grind with deafening finality. The six syllables caged in my ribs shriek in sympathetic resonance. Without the narcotic dampening of Samir’s blood, the ambient solar radiation flooding the platform immediately surges back into my veins. The localized inferno around my body reignites. My skin turns translucent, the blinding golden fire rushing back to the surface.
The machine is pulling on me, demanding that I act as a conduit, demanding I reflect the permanent noon into the sky and boil the aquifers below.
I am a king, I tell the chaotic, burning fragments of my true name. I am not a mirror.
Instead of letting the magic bleed upward into the atmosphere, I force it downward. I seize the six unstable syllables with every ounce of my ENTJ willpower, wrestling the raw, catastrophic thermal energy into submission. It is like trying to hold a dying star in my bare hands. The pain is absolute, a white-hot agony that evaporates the moisture from my eyes and chars the inside of my lungs.
I throw my hands out, channeling the explosive solar force into a massive, localized kinetic shield.
The dark, violet smoke of my innate shadow-magic fuses violently with the stolen, blinding light. A dome of crackling, twilight energy erupts over the iron grate, violently repelling the concentrated solar beams of the Astrolabe. I angle the shield directly over Samir, casting him in deep, freezing shadow.
The moment the Astrolabe’s downward beams strike my shield, the backlash hits me like a physical battering ram.
My knees buckle. The bones in my arms groan under the kinetic pressure. My skin begins to flake, the edges of my shoulders turning a sickening, charred gray.
Ash.
My biology is literally disintegrating under the strain of holding back the sun with a fractured soul. But beneath the dome, Samir is safe from the radiation. He forces himself up onto his knees, cradling his broken arm, staring at the sheer, apocalyptic display of power radiating from my decaying form.
"Idris!" Samir screams, the stoic mask completely annihilated by panic. "You can’t hold it! It’s eating you alive! Stop!"
"Stay down!" I bellow back, my vocal cords cracking. "I am giving you the shadow! Use it!"
On the observation gantry above, Regent Malek realizes what is happening. The blinding dome of permanent daylight over the capital flickers. The boiling roar of the reservoir below us stutters. By turning the magic inward to create a shield, I have broken the circuit. The Astrolabe is choking on its own un-reflected power.
Malek leans over the brass railing, his face twisted in absolute, incredulous fury.
"You fool!" Malek’s voice booms through the steam. "You are destroying yourself to save a human tool! The machine will incinerate you!"
"Then come down here and burn with me, usurper!" I taunt him, blood and liquid light pouring from my nose.
Malek’s eyes dart from my ashing, glowing form to the human kneeling in the shadows beneath my shield. The Regent is four hundred years old; his mind is a labyrinth of political cruelty and magical theory. I see the exact microsecond the realization hits him.
He looks at Samir’s bleeding right hand, the hand that had miraculously grounded the apocalyptic thermal runaway of six syllables.
"He grounded the magic," Malek breathes, the words barely carrying over the roar of the machine, but my heightened senses catch them. "He didn’t just soothe you. He stabilized a six-shard resonance. A mortal body cannot do that." Malek’s eyes widen in horrifying comprehension. "Unless it is adapted to the fire. Unless it is the seventh vessel."
Malek draws a long, curved khopesh forged entirely of condensed, blinding sun-steel.
"If the battery refuses to complete the circuit," Malek snarls, vaulting over the brass railing of the gantry, "I will force the final connection!"
Malek drops twenty feet, landing on the blistering iron platform with the heavy, unyielding grace of an ancient vampire. The impact rattles the grates. He does not even look at me. He locks his predatory gaze entirely on Samir.
He knows that if he kills the executioner, the seventh syllable will snap into my chest, instantly overpowering my conscious will and turning me back into the ultimate, unbreakable conduit for the permanent noon.
"Samir, move!" I roar.
I drop the massive kinetic shield, redirecting the raw, chaotic energy into my own legs. I launch myself across the melted slag of the floor, intercepting Malek just as he lunges for the shadows.
We collide with the force of two freight trains.
The impact is brutal, a chaotic tangle of limbs and searing heat. Malek is at the absolute zenith of his power, invigorated by the ambient sunlight and centuries of stolen blood. I am a fractured, melting husk, operating on pure, suicidal adrenaline.
He drives the sun-steel khopesh upward. I catch his wrist with my left hand, the heated metal of the hilt instantly searing my palm to the bone. With my right hand, I drive a fist cloaked in violently unstable solar magic directly into Malek’s sternum.
The blast throws him backward, his white silks catching fire, but he lands lightly on his feet, a cruel, mocking smile on his lips.
"Look at you, Prince of the Night," Malek sneers, circling me. He twirls the glowing khopesh effortlessly. "You are turning to dust to protect a blood-bag. You are a disgrace to the fangs in your mouth."
"I am the only true thing left in this empire," I rasp, my breathing ragged.
My left arm hangs uselessly, the muscles severed by the heat of his blade’s proximity. The gray ash is spreading up my ribs, consuming the healthy tissue, leaving nothing but a hollow, glowing skeleton of magic beneath. I have seconds left before my physical form collapses entirely.
Malek lunges again. His speed is a blur of white light. I throw up my right arm to block, but it is a feint. He drops low, sweeping his leg out, catching me behind the knees.
I hit the iron floor hard. Before I can roll, Malek’s boot comes down on my chest, pinning me to the blistering grate. The sheer weight of him forces a gasp of liquid fire from my lungs. He raises the sun-steel blade, not to kill me—he needs me alive to power the machine—but to sever my limbs, to render me completely immobile while he butchers Samir.
"Watch him die, Idris," Malek whispers, looking past me.
But Malek has made a fatal, arrogant miscalculation. He has underestimated the Executioner.
Samir does not run. He does not cower in the shadows.
From the corner of my blurring vision, I see the human move. Despite his dislocated left shoulder, despite the agonizing burns on his face and the blood pouring from his torn right wrist, Samir al-Vey launches himself into the blinding light of the platform.
He does not have his massive, two-handed dark steel sword. He only has the small, serrated utility knife he used to slash his own palm. But he is not fighting a war of attrition. He is a guild assassin executing a precise, tactical strike.
Malek senses the movement at the last microsecond. He turns his head, raising the khopesh to casually swat the mortal away.
Samir drops into a violent slide on the slick, bloodied iron grate. He ducks entirely beneath the arc of Malek’s glowing blade. He uses his momentum, his body weight, and every ounce of his relentless, ESTJ discipline to target the only unprotected vulnerability on an armored, ancient vampire.
Samir drives the serrated utility knife to the hilt directly into the back of Malek’s ankle, severing the Achilles tendon completely.
Malek lets out a shriek of absolute, undignified agony. The ancient vampire’s leg buckles instantly, his balance completely destroyed. He crashes to his knees, his grip on his weapon faltering.
"Now, Idris!" Samir shouts, rolling out of Malek’s reach, clutching his injured ribs.
I do not hesitate. The distraction buys me the fraction of a second I need.
I ignore the agonizing decay of my own body. I summon the absolute last reservoir of the six syllables, dragging the raw, solar fire out of my ashing veins and forcing it entirely into my right hand.
I thrust my hand upward, driving my palm directly under Malek’s jaw.
I release the magic.
A localized blast of pure, unadulterated thermal energy detonates point-blank against the Regent’s throat. The concussive force is staggering. Malek’s head snaps back with a sickening crunch. The shockwave lifts his heavy body off the ground and hurls him backward, over the edge of the iron platform.
Malek plummets into the blinding white steam rising from the boiling reservoir below, his screams swallowed by the roar of the water.
Silence, save for the grinding gears, falls over the platform.
I remain on the iron grate, staring up at the blinding, unforgiving mirrors of the Astrolabe. I try to push myself up, to crawl toward the shadows where Samir is kneeling, but my arms do not respond.
I look down at my hands. They are gone.
From the fingertips to the elbows, the flesh has entirely turned to gray, crumbling ash. The catastrophic strain of channeling the six syllables into a kinetic shield, and then weaponizing the remaining thermal energy, has burned out my physical biology completely. The sun-sickness has consumed me.
The ash is spreading rapidly up my shoulders, crawling across my chest toward my heart. The pain is fading, replaced by a terrifying, hollow numbness.
"Idris!"
Samir scrambles across the blistering grate. He ignores the heat, throwing himself down beside me. His dark eyes are frantic, sweeping over my decaying form. He reaches out with his bleeding right hand, trying to press his palm against my chest, trying to force the singer’s resonance back into my failing system.
"No, no, no," Samir chokes out, his voice cracking as his hand passes right through the crumbling ash of my left shoulder. "I told you to take it. You stubborn, arrogant fool, I told you to take the blood!"
"I command… the light," I whisper, my voice barely more than a dry rustle of wind. "I am… not a mirror."
"You are dying!" Samir screams, tears tracking through the soot and blood on his cheeks. He grabs the collar of my torn, charred shirt, trying to pull me upward, trying to anchor me to the physical world. "Your heart is stopping! The magic is eating the muscle!"
It is true. I can feel it. The heavy, immortal muscle in my chest is faltering, the rhythm stuttering into chaotic, erratic beats as the myocardial tissue literally turns to dust.
"The machine… is broken," I tell him, forcing the corners of my mouth into a faint, exhausted smile. "The permanent noon… will fade."
Because I am dying, the six syllables trapped inside me are dying with me. The battery is shutting down. Without my immortal life-force to act as a magnifying lens, the Astrolabe is just a collection of heated mirrors. The water table will survive.
"I don’t care about the machine!" Samir’s pragmatic exterior shatters completely, revealing the raw, devastated core of the man beneath. He presses his forehead against mine, his breath hot and ragged against my skin. "I care about you. Do not leave me here, Idris. That is an order. Do you hear me? I am the executioner, and I forbid you to die!"
It is the most beautiful, desperate command I have ever heard. I want to obey it. I want to live in the dark with him, to build a new empire out of the ruins, to feel the heavy, grounding weight of his hands on my skin for the rest of eternity.
But my sovereignty has demanded a final price.
"You… hold my reins," I whisper, the last of the air leaving my lungs. The golden light in my vision begins to dim, the blinding glare of the Astrolabe fading into a cool, welcoming twilight. "Absolute law."
I reach up with the last remaining sliver of my intact magic, a faint tendril of dark, violet shadow, and gently wipe a tear from his cheek.
Then, the final, erratic beat of my heart echoes in my chest.
It stops.
My eyes close. The agonizing heat vanishes, replaced by a profound, terrifying weightlessness. I feel myself slipping, unraveling into the dark, leaving the burning platform behind.
The last thing I am aware of is the agonizing, deafening silence as the two-way conduit of the blood-bond in Samir’s mind snaps completely, permanently severed.
I am gone.
