Where forbidden tales are told.

The lead-lined box in the herald’s hands devours the ambient heat of the cave.

Inside it rests a single, unpolished dragon scale, jagged at the root and glowing with a bruised, necrotic purple light. It pulses in perfect, sickening synchronization with the typhoon eye inked over my sternum. The master scale. The root of the royal mate-bond. The one piece of draconic anatomy that dictates absolute, override-level compliance from a marked vessel.

The air pressure in the cave flatlines.

"The Emperor demands the leash," the herald repeats. His voice is a polished, venomous needle, backed by the sheer physical mass of the two wyverns blocking the cave mouth, their jaws snapping at the freezing rain.

The molten, devastating heat that had just thawed my bones vanishes.

The circuit between Kaito and me snaps shut. It isn’t a fade; it is a violent, unilateral severing. Kaito pulls away from me, his bare back rigid. He reaches for his ruined leather coat on the cave floor and shrugs it on, hiding the geometric iron-ink dragon on his ribs. Hiding my signature.

He steps between me and the herald. The broad, protective span of his shoulders is exactly the same as when he stood between me and the enforcers in my shop, but the geometry has fundamentally changed. The ambient temperature around him plummets. He is no longer radiating the raw, unchained warmth of a lover. He is pulling his heat inward, building a wall of localized frost. The exiled prince slotting perfectly back into the armor of a tyrant.

"The vessel’s coordinates belong to me," Kaito says. His voice is entirely devoid of the rough velvet that just whispered against my skin. It is the flat, dead acoustics of imperial law.

"They belong to the crown, exile," the herald counters, tilting the lead box forward so the purple light spills across the basalt floor. "You bought an island’s survival with stolen scales, but the armada tracked the barometric shift. You are out of counterfeit futures. The Emperor knows you did not destroy your primary scale when you fled. Surrender the root, and he will let you keep your human form."

    I stare at Kaito’s back.

    You did not destroy it.

My hands shake as I pull the soaked remnants of my shirt up over my collarbone. The soot line he drew on my neck smears against the fabric, turning from a mark of consent into a dirty stain.

"You kept it," I whisper. The words barely breach the roar of the rain outside, but Kaito’s spine goes rigid.

He doesn’t turn around. He doesn’t look at me. "I needed a contingency against the capital," he says to the stone wall. "A piece of leverage they couldn’t track."

"Leverage." The word tastes like iron and bile. "I am the leverage."

The herald laughs, a dry, scraping sound. "Did you think you were a partner, ink-cutter? The bond is an imperial asset. He kept the leash because a Ryū lord never truly surrenders his property. He merely waits for the right time to pull the chain."

The public exposure of it—the herald standing there, witnessing the exact moment my delusion of freedom shatters—is a physical blow. We just negotiated a contract of mutual consent. We just opened the gates and let the fire bridge the gap. But the entire time, Kaito was holding a master key behind his back. The absolute power to strip my choices away was sitting in his pocket, waiting.

I stumble backward until my shoulder blades hit the back wall of the cave. The typhoon mark on my chest sears, not with the warm hum of connection, but with the cold, localized terror of being completely engulfed.

"Give it to him," Kaito commands the herald, extending a gloved hand.

The herald smirks and steps forward, holding out the lead box.

Kaito’s fingers wrap around the edge of the master scale. The moment his skin makes contact with the purple, glowing keratin, the magic arcs.

But it doesn’t arc toward him.

The violent spike of purple lightning tears straight out of the box, bypassing Kaito entirely, and strikes the exact center of my chest.

I scream, collapsing to my knees.

It feels as if a molten needle has been driven directly into my sternum. The typhoon eye expands violently, tearing past the iron-ink boundaries I drew. The heavy, geometric blocks meant to cage the storm shatter into black dust beneath my epidermis.

"Aoi!" Kaito drops the box. He lunges toward me, but the sheer force of the kinetic energy radiating from my chest throws him backward against the cave wall.

The master scale isn’t just a leash. It is a memory drive. And the moment it reconnects with the completed circuit of my ink, it forces the encrypted data backward into the architect’s mind.

The blinding flash of white light behind my eyes has nothing to do with the storm.

I am not in a cave. I am standing in a pristine, suffocatingly bright golden hall. I am not wearing the soaked, bloodstained clothes of a slum tattooist. I am draped in heavy, immaculate silk.

I am holding a stylus made of pure dragon-bone.

A young Kaito Sazan is chained to a brass altar in front of me, his eyes wild with terror as the high priests hold him down.

“The prince’s will is too strong,” a voice echoes in the golden hall. “The beast will consume him. Draft the binding. Strip his future so the empire may survive.”

And I step forward. I do not flinch. I dip the bone stylus into a vat of crushed, iridescent scales. My hands—my own hands, unscarred and precise—press the needle into his ribs. I draw the chain. I draw the geometric blocks. I design the exact ritual that strips the choice from the shifter and maps the typhoons for the crown.

I am not a victim of the Ryū’s fate-stripping magic.

    I am its creator.

I designed the cage. I built the system that enslaves the vessels. And when the guilt of what I had done to a generation of people became too crushing to bear, I used my own needle to violently rip the memories out of my own head, running to the slums to play the savior.

    The vision violently collapses.

I am back on the basalt floor, gasping for air, clutching my chest. The typhoon tattoo has expanded, its black, swirling outer bands reaching all the way up to my throat.

Kaito pushes himself off the wall. He looks at me, his silver eyes wide, the slit-pupils completely swallowed by horror. The resonance of the master scale has shared the flash. He saw it. He remembers.

He looks down at his own ribs, then back at my hands. The hands that enslaved him.

"You," he breathes, the betrayal fracturing the single syllable into glass.

There is no contract to negotiate. There is no trust left to rebuild.

Before either of us can move, the true consequence of the broken boundary hits. Without my iron-ink caging the prophecy on my chest, the scale’s raw magic feeds the storm directly.

The roof of the cave explodes.

Solid basalt tears away like wet paper. The sky above us is no longer a swirling cloud-wall. It is a solid, descending ceiling of absolute blackness. The air pressure drops so fast the two wyverns at the entrance are sucked upward into the howling void, screaming.

The rogue wave was a fraction. This is the eye. And it has finally found its center.
