Where forbidden tales are told.

Magistrate Caelum does not expect us to walk through the heavy mahogany doors of his private solar. He expects Iria to be a fugitive, or dead, and he certainly does not expect the vampire king to be standing exactly half a pace behind her right shoulder.

I let her lead. Iria drops the black leather dossier onto Caelum’s desk with a resounding crack. It is a flawless, multi-layered trap of logic and law. She lays out the transit logs, the encrypted supply chains, and the isotopic decay measurements that prove the blood signature in the prince’s throat was a projected memory, not a physical bite. I watch Caelum’s eyes dart from the parchment to my face, searching for a fracture in our alliance. He finds nothing but my absolute, suffocating silence. I am the executioner’s blade hovering over his neck, but Iria is the one holding the hilt.

"The crown prince was operating an unsanctioned memory harvest to fuel the eclipse engines," Iria states, her voice ringing with the clarity of struck silver. "The evidence is absolute, Magistrate. You will annul the assassination charge against me, and you will sign the immediate closure of the lower district’s transit hubs. Or His Majesty will have you audited for treason by association."

Caelum’s face pales. He looks at me, the ruler of his kind, standing in submission to the demands of a human investigator. The social architecture of the court snaps. I nod once, a minute dip of my chin that seals his defeat. Caelum reaches for his quill, his hands shaking, and signs the annulment. The victory is pristine. For the first time in three centuries, I watch a human force the immortal court to its knees, and the pride that surges in my chest is a violent, possessive thing.

When we finally return to the absolute isolation of my private sanctum, the adrenaline of the political strike crashes. The heavy velvet curtains block out the eternal eclipse, lit only by the low glow of the hearth. I immediately step back, putting the mandatory three paces of distance between us, honoring the rigid boundary she set in the archives.

Iria does not respect the boundary.

She sheds her coat, letting it drop to the floor. She crosses the Persian rug, her boots silent, and steps directly into my personal space. The heat radiating off her skin hits me like a physical blow.

"I said no feeding, Vesper," she murmurs, her grey eyes locking onto mine, dark and dilated. "I said no mesmerizing. I did not say you couldn’t touch me."

She reaches up, her fingers sliding into the hair at the nape of my neck, and pulls me down.

My restraint shatters. I crush my mouth against hers, a desperate, starving impact. She gasps, her lips parting, and I devour the sound, sweeping my tongue across the ridge of her teeth. The contrast of her living, frantic warmth against my unnatural cold is a shock to my nervous system. I back her into the heavy oak of my desk, lifting her by the thighs until she is sitting on the edge, her legs wrapping around my waist.

I tear the silk of her blouse, my cold hands finding the bare, flushed skin of her stomach. She arches into my touch with a sharp intake of breath. I kiss my way down her jaw, my fangs fully descended, aching with the predatory instinct to bite, to claim, to drink the memory of this moment from her veins. But I lock my jaw. I scrape my blunt teeth against her collarbone instead, denying the beast, choosing the man.

She pulls my shirt over my head, her nails digging into the scarred musculature of my back. "Take it off," she commands, her voice thick with a desire that mirrors my own.

I strip her of the remaining fabric, laying her back against the scattered legal briefs on the desk. She is a vision of absolute, unprotected vulnerability, yet she holds all the power. I sink into her, the friction deep and precise, and her nails bite into my shoulders. We move in a frantic, unyielding rhythm, the heavy silence of the room broken only by the wet slide of our bodies and her breathless, unraveling moans. I watch her face as I drive her toward the edge, my own release building like a storm front. She shudders violently, crying out my name, her internal muscles clamping down around me. I let go, burying my face in her neck, groaning as the climax rips through my body, anchoring me to the only real thing in this cursed city.

We remain tangled in the dim light, the aftershock of the intimacy leaving a heavy, golden lethargy in my limbs. She traces the edge of a three-hundred-year-old scar on my chest, her breathing finally slowing to its steady, rhythmic metronome.

I close my eyes, pulling her closer, and make the mistake of speaking the truth.

"The engines are starving now," I murmur into her hair, my guard lowered by the profound weight of what we just shared. "Closing the transit hubs only stops the supply. It doesn’t stop the hunger. It was always going to end like this."

I feel the exact moment her muscles freeze.

Her fingers stop moving against my skin. The sentence hangs in the air, a half-truth that implies I knew the scope of the engine’s fuel long before tonight, long before the prince’s murder. The illusion of our perfect victory begins to crack, the underlying horror of the city bleeding through my careless words. She shifts, her pulse spiking, preparing to pull away, to demand the missing pieces of the puzzle I have hidden from her.

Before she can speak, before I can retract the slip, the heavy reinforced glass of the sanctum’s balcony doors shatters inward with a concussive, deafening explosion.

The blast wave throws us from the desk, the lingering heat of our bodies instantly consumed by the violent, icy wind of a full-scale siege.
