The vault seals with a catastrophic, final thud that reverberates through the marrow of my bones. The mechanical sirens outside are instantly severed, leaving behind a silence so absolute and heavy it feels like a physical weight pressing against my eardrums.
On the black marble plinth, the invasion treaty is dying, and it intends to take us with it. The parchment folds inward, radiating a blinding, strobing crimson light that smells of boiling copper and ozone. The magic is a cornered animal, frantically searching for a host, a conduit, an exit.
"We have less than a minute before the kinetic buildup incinerates the room," Nadir says. His aristocratic composure is completely shattered, his chest heaving, his dark eyes locked on me in the violent red glare.
Ashar stands perfectly still, his jaw clenched so tight the muscles twitch beneath his skin. He doesn’t look at the bomb on the pedestal; he is looking only at me. "The Veto," he grates out. "Tell us exactly what to do, Qadir."
My mind races, my Ti function ruthlessly stripping away the terror to isolate the mechanics of the spell. Fae magic is literal. It demands an equal exchange. A blood-seal tied to the political consensus of two rival courts cannot be broken by a single person, nor can it be broken by a lie.
"The magic requires absolute transparency," I say, my voice shaking, though I force the words out with clinical precision. "It will audit the connection between the three of us. If it senses hesitation, if it senses a hidden motive, or if one of us tries to hold back, the Veto fails and the scroll detonates. We have to become a single, unbroken circuit. A complete sharing of life force."
Ashar’s amber eyes darken. He understands the tactical reality of what I am asking. Nadir understands the arcane cost.
"It means total vulnerability," Nadir whispers, his gaze darting between Ashar and me. "It means lowering every mental and physical defense we possess."
The strobing red light flashes faster, the heat in the room spiking to a suffocating degree. The air is thinning, drawn toward the collapsing syntax on the plinth.
"I am the conduit," I say, stepping fully between them. The analytical translator in me is gone, replaced by a desperate, raw instinct for survival and a sudden, terrifying clarity. I look at Ashar, at the lethal, armored War-Prince who has spent a century guarding his heart behind a wall of violence. Then I look at Nadir, the Archivist who hides his profound depths behind layers of cold theory and bitter resentment.
"I won’t be a sacrifice," I tell them, my voice dropping to a fierce, steady register that cuts through the hum of the collapsing magic. "I won’t be a tool used to solve your political dispute. If we do this, we do it as equals. You don’t hold back. You don’t hide from me, and you don’t hide from each other. Do you consent to this? All of it?"
"Yes," Ashar says instantly, the word a heavy, resonant vow in the small space.
"Without hesitation," Nadir answers, his dark eyes burning with an intensity that steals the remaining breath from my lungs.
"Then ground me," I command.
Ashar moves first. He reaches for the heavy buckles of his breastplate. The thick Vanguard leather and iron hit the obsidian floor with a heavy clatter, leaving him in a thin, dark undershirt that clings to the heavy, scarred musculature of his torso. Beside him, Nadir sheds his velvet coat, his movements elegant but frantic, discarding the layers of his courtly armor until he is in a linen shirt, open at the throat.
The heat radiating from Ashar is a furnace; the air around Nadir is a sharp, electric chill. I am caught in the immediate, violent collision of their opposing natures.
Ashar steps into my space, his large, calloused hands gripping my waist. The physical contact is a shock of pure adrenaline. He pulls me flush against the hard, unrelenting lines of his body. "I’ve got you," he rumbles, his voice vibrating against my chest.
Nadir steps in right behind me. His chest presses against my back, his long, elegant fingers sliding around to cup my jaw, his thumb resting over the frantic pulse point at my throat.
The triad closes.
The moment our bodies align, the magic of the scroll violently surges outward, seeking the path of least resistance. It crashes into my mind—a tidal wave of corrupted, jagged High Tongue syntax. I gasp, throwing my head back against Nadir’s shoulder as the pain spikes.
"Open the circuit," Nadir commands, his voice low, his breath hot against my ear. "Don’t fight the syntax, Samira. Let it flow through you to us. We will hold the weight."
I drop my mental walls. I stop trying to translate the magic and simply let it exist.
Ashar’s grip on my waist tightens almost to the point of bruising. He anchors me to the physical world, his Se-dominance an immovable pillar of strength. I feel the magic tear into him, testing his resolve, trying to find the cracks in his armor. He lets out a harsh, guttural groan, his forehead dropping to rest against mine.
Nadir’s mind opens behind me. It is a vast, subterranean lake of knowledge, theory, and profound, buried emotion. He takes the arcane complexity of the scroll, absorbing the theoretical paradoxes that would have shattered my mortal brain.
But the magic is not satisfied. The red light pulses, burning hotter. It demands more than just shared burden; it demands absolute unity. It demands the physical manifestation of trust.
Ashar’s hand slides up from my waist, his rough palm flattening against the center of my chest, directly over my racing heart. His golden eyes lock onto mine, dilated and incredibly dark. "Samira," he breathes, a rough plea for permission.
I nod, my hands coming up to grip his shoulders, feeling the thick, coiled tension in his muscles.
Ashar captures my mouth.
The kiss is not gentle. It is a desperate, consuming collision of need and survival. He tastes of ozone, copper, and raw, unfiltered desire. His mouth is demanding, his tongue sweeping past my lips to claim the space, pouring his frantic, protective energy directly into my system. I lean into it, my fingers digging into his heavy shoulders, pulling him closer, anchoring myself in his overwhelming heat.
The connection acts like a catalyst. The red, jagged magic tearing through my mind suddenly smooths out, aligning with the rhythm of my pounding heart.
Behind me, Nadir’s hands slide down the sides of my neck, his long fingers mapping the curve of my collarbones, before tracking down to trace the dip of my waist. He presses his mouth to the sensitive skin just behind my ear, his teeth grazing my pulse point.
A sharp, electric jolt of pleasure shoots straight down my spine, shattering the last remnants of my fear.
I am surrounded by them, encased in their opposing elements. Ashar’s mouth leaves mine, trailing hot, open-mouthed kisses down the line of my jaw, moving to the hollow of my throat. He is relentless, entirely focused on the physical reality of my skin, his hands mapping the curve of my hips, pulling my legs flush against his thighs so I can feel the hard, heavy evidence of his arousal straining against his trousers.
I turn my head, my lips parting on a ragged breath, and Nadir is right there.
Nadir’s kiss is completely different from Ashar’s. It is deep, calculating, and devastatingly precise. He doesn’t conquer; he unravels. His mouth slides over mine, his tongue tasting me with a slow, deliberate worship that makes my knees buckle. If Ashar hadn’t been holding me up, I would have collapsed to the obsidian floor.
The magic in the room shifts in response. The blinding, aggressive crimson begins to bleed out into a deep, resonant violet. The physical boundaries between the three of us begin to blur. I can feel Ashar’s protective fury; I can feel Nadir’s agonizing, centuries-old loneliness; and through the conduit of my own body, I feel them feeling each other.
The broken link between the two princes—the century of bitter resentment, the unspoken heartbreak of their past—is forcibly bridged by the magic passing through me.
Ashar’s hand leaves my waist and reaches around, his large, scarred fingers wrapping around the back of Nadir’s neck. The grip is fiercely possessive. Nadir breaks our kiss, a sharp intake of breath hissing through his teeth as he looks at Ashar over my shoulder.
I watch the profound, terrifying vulnerability break across both their faces. The hostility evaporates, burned away by the raw, undeniable truth of the Veto. They cannot lie to the magic, and they cannot lie to themselves. They still love each other, and they are both fundamentally, inexplicably tied to me.
"We finish this," Ashar growls, his voice thick with lust and magic.
He steps back, pulling me with him, lowering us to the cold, smooth surface of the obsidian vault floor. He doesn’t let go of Nadir, pulling the Archivist-Prince down with us.
The red strobing light of the scroll casts deep, shifting shadows over the sharp planes of their faces. The air is heavy, saturated with the intoxicating scent of myrrh, sweat, and the electric tang of ozone.
My hands are shaking as I reach for the buttons of my ruined blouse. I don’t want the fabric between us anymore. I want the total transparency the magic demands. Ashar’s rough hands brush mine away, taking over the task. He is surprisingly deft, stripping the garment from my shoulders, his golden eyes tracking every inch of my exposed skin with a fierce, burning reverence.
Nadir kneels beside me, his long fingers trailing lightly down my ribs, making my stomach muscles flutter. He leans over, pressing his mouth to the center of my chest, exactly where Ashar’s hand had been moments before.
I am laid bare before them, entirely vulnerable, entirely willing.
"Tell me what you need, Samira," Nadir murmurs against my skin, his dark eyes looking up through his silver lashes.
"Both of you," I breathe, the honesty of it ringing clear and true in the magical current connecting us. "I need both of you."
Ashar strips his shirt, discarding it into the shadows. The intricate, shifting black ink of his treaty tattoos crawls across his broad shoulders and chest, reacting to the volatile magic in the room. He moves over me, settling between my thighs. His heavy, muscular weight is a magnificent, grounding pressure.
Nadir moves to my head, sliding his arms under my shoulders, lifting my upper body so I am cradled against his chest. He holds my gaze, his cool, precise energy balancing the inferno of Ashar’s approach.
"Look at me, Samira," Nadir whispers, his thumb stroking my cheek. "Stay with me in the mind. Let him have the body."
I nod, my breath catching as Ashar’s hands slide up the insides of my thighs. The physical sensation is blinding. Ashar doesn’t rush. Despite the ticking clock of the scroll, his Se-dominance demands he experience the immediate reality of my response. His fingers trace the sensitive skin, finding the slick, hot core of my desire.
I arch off the floor, a sharp cry tearing from my throat.
Nadir instantly captures my mouth, swallowing the sound, his tongue sliding against mine in perfect, agonizing counterpoint to the relentless, rhythmic pressure of Ashar’s fingers below.
The magic of the room spikes, the violet light flashing brighter, matching the rapid, frantic beat of my pulse. The syntax of the invasion treaty is being overwritten, rewritten by the sheer, undeniable reality of our physical and emotional convergence.
"Ashar," I gasp against Nadir’s mouth, my hands reaching down, gripping Ashar’s thick wrists. I can’t take the buildup anymore; the magic and the pleasure are entwined too tightly, threatening to tear me apart. "Now. Please."
Ashar looks at me, his amber eyes blazing with an ancient, primal possessiveness. He shifts, aligning himself against me.
"Look at him," Ashar commands softly, his gaze flicking to Nadir.
I turn my head, burying my face in the curve of Nadir’s neck, inhaling the clean, cold scent of him as Ashar pushes forward.
The intrusion is a thick, stretching fullness that steals the breath from my lungs. I cry out, my nails biting into Nadir’s shoulders. Nadir holds me fiercely, his arms wrapping around me, his lips pressed to my temple, sharing the initial shock, grounding the intense physical reality of Ashar’s invasion.
Ashar goes perfectly still, buried deep inside me, his jaw clenched as he fights for control. His large hands span my hips, his thumbs pressing into the soft skin of my stomach. "Are you alright?" he rasps, his chest heaving.
"Don’t stop," I whisper, my body rapidly adjusting, the initial stretch giving way to a deep, profound ache of want.
He moves. Slowly at first, a heavy, dragging friction that sends a shockwave of pure fire up my spine. Nadir’s hands slide down to cover my breasts, his thumbs brushing the sensitive peaks, catching my gasp in another deep, consuming kiss.
The rhythm builds. Ashar’s hips snap forward with increasing, ruthless precision, driving me up into Nadir’s chest. The physical sensation is a flawless, overwhelming synchronization. Ashar is the anchor, the driving force, his every thrust a declaration of physical reality; Nadir is the architect, his hands and mouth mapping my pleasure, anticipating every gasp, every arch of my spine.
I am the bridge.
The magic of the room surges through us, a blinding current of energy. Through the conduit of my body, I feel Ashar’s hand reach up. He doesn’t reach for me; he reaches past me.
His rough, scarred fingers tangle in the silver hair at the nape of Nadir’s neck. Nadir breaks our kiss, his breath hitching. Ashar pulls him down.
Above me, the two fae princes lock mouths in a brutal, desperate kiss. It is a collision of a century of unspoken grief, betrayal, and undeniable, enduring love. I watch them, feeling the heavy, rhythmic thrust of Ashar inside me, feeling the frantic heartbeat of Nadir against my back, and the sheer, breathtaking beauty of their reconciliation shatters the last of my control.
The Veto clause clicks into place in my mind.
Unified Consensus. Absolute Transparency.
"Yes," I scream, the word tearing from my throat as the pleasure crests, crashing over me in a tidal wave of blinding white heat. My body clamps down around Ashar, my spine bowing off the floor.
Ashar breaks the kiss with Nadir, throwing his head back with a harsh, guttural roar as he finds his own release, emptying himself into me, his heavy frame trembling violently with the force of it. Nadir shudders against me, his chest heaving, his own climax washing through our shared mental link, a profound, exquisite wave of emotional resolution.
At the exact moment we peak, the invasion scroll on the plinth lets out a sound like shattering glass.
The blinding, volatile magic collapses inward. The corrupted syntax breaks apart, the syllables turning from jagged crimson to a soft, stable, luminous silver. The violent shaking of the vault stops entirely. The oppressive, localized vacuum pressure vanishes, replaced by cool, breathable air.
The Veto is triggered. The blood-seal is broken.
For a long, suspended minute, the only sound in the dark, silent vault is the ragged, overlapping sound of our breathing.
The adrenaline slowly, inevitably begins to ebb.
Ashar collapses forward, his heavy weight a comforting, solid blanket over me. He buries his face in the crook of my neck, his lips pressing a soft, lingering kiss against my pulse point. He is entirely pliant, the lethal Vanguard warrior reduced to a state of absolute, peaceful exhaustion.
Nadir shifts, extracting his arm from beneath me, but he doesn’t pull away. He slides down, resting his back against the side of the obsidian plinth, his long legs stretched out on the floor. He reaches out, his cool fingers gently brushing a tangled lock of damp hair from my forehead.
"You did it, Samira," Nadir whispers, his voice thick, devoid of all its usual aristocratic armor. "You broke the Sovereign’s hold."
I let out a long, shaky breath, a profound sense of relief washing over me. We survived. I saved my city. The impossible tension that has gripped my chest since the road opened finally uncoils.
I shift slightly beneath Ashar. He grumbles, a low, contented sound in the back of his throat, and rolls off me, settling onto his stomach on the cold floor, one heavy arm draped over my waist to keep me close.
The room is bathed in the soft, tranquil silver light emanating from the neutralized scroll. It is peaceful. Intimate. I sit up slowly, pulling the discarded velvet of Nadir’s coat over my lap to ward off the chill of the stone floor.
My gaze drops to Ashar. He is sleeping, or at least resting deeply, his face turned toward me. The intricate, magical tattoos that mark him as a prince of the blood cover his broad, muscular back.
Fae treaty tattoos are not static. They shift and reform, recording the political actions and binding votes of the royals. I have never seen one up close, unshielded by armor or glamour.
I reach out, my fingers lightly tracing the ridge of his spine. The ink is warm to the touch, a deep, iridescent black against his olive skin. I know the High Tongue perfectly. I read the sweeping, elegant syntax etched between his shoulder blades.
It is the record of the invasion treaty. The exact mandate Kaelen used to tear open the road in Qamar.
My fingers slow. I read the final clause, the section that records the Vanguard’s official stance on the mandate. The High Tongue is precise. It leaves no room for ambiguity.
Iron Vanguard. Prince Ashar Rahim. Vote: In Favor. Consensus achieved.
My blood runs cold. A block of ice drops into the pit of my stomach.
I look up, my eyes wide, searching for Nadir. He is resting his head back against the plinth, his eyes closed. The linen shirt he wears is unbuttoned, slipping off his shoulder, exposing the smooth, pale expanse of his own back, and the intricate, shifting ink that mirrors Ashar’s.
My heart begins to hammer a frantic, sickening rhythm. I scramble to my knees, dropping the velvet coat. I lean over, my hands shaking so violently I can barely focus my vision, and read the High Tongue script flowing across Nadir’s skin.
Archive Spires. Prince Nadir Sayegh. Vote: In Favor. Consensus achieved.
I read the date stamped in the magical ink.
Six months ago.
They didn’t just fail to stop Kaelen. They didn’t just act on outdated intelligence.
Six months ago, Ashar and Nadir both cast their royal votes to approve the treaty. They both looked at the tactical map, saw my human city, and consciously chose to sacrifice it to save their own dying world. They are the architects of the very invasion I just bonded my soul to them to stop.
