    ZARA

The morning light filtering through the industrial skylight of Elias’s atelier is entirely indifferent to the wreckage of the night before.

I wake before he does. My internal clock, honed by decades of paranoia and the violent demands of my blood, refuses to let me sleep past dawn. I lie still on the heavy oak cutting table, the scent of bergamot, ozone, and our shared sweat grounding me in the immediate reality of what I have done. My head rests against the discarded charcoal waistcoat. Elias is asleep on the leather sofa a few yards away, having moved us there at some point in the darkest hours of the morning, though I ended up pacing back to the table when my legs refused to stay still.

I sit up, pulling my black silk camisole over my head. My body feels entirely foreign. It is quiet. The violent, agonizing friction between my wolf and vampire lineages is a dull hum rather than a roaring inferno. I look at Elias. His chest rises and falls in a steady, slow rhythm. He looks less like a ruthless hunter in the pale morning light and more like a man exhausted by his own brilliance.

Then, my gaze drifts to the massive, gold-leafed mirror resting against the exposed brick wall.

    ELIAS CROWE.

The blood has dried, turning the jagged letters my shadow wolf wrote into a dark, rusty brown. It is a grotesque monument to my true purpose here.

I slide off the table, my bare feet silent against the cold obsidian floor. I find my discarded trench coat draped over a headless mannequin. I run my fingers along the inner lining until I feel the stiff, heavy resistance of parchment. I pull it out. The assassination contract. The blood-seal of my handler pulses with a faint, sickly warmth against my thumb. It is an active bind. In the underworld, you do not simply walk away from a sealed hit. If I fail, they will send a dozen executioners to finish the job, and they will mount my head on a pike in the Sanguine Court for the betrayal.

I trace the edge of the paper. I should have killed him. I should have let the shadow wolf rip his throat out. Instead, I let him unravel my armor, and I let him touch me.

"I know a lot of ways to dismantle a threat, Zara, but staring at it usually isn’t one of them."

I flinch, my hand instantly snapping the parchment back into the concealed pocket of the coat. I pivot. Elias is awake, sitting up on the leather sofa. His amber eyes are sharp, instantly analyzing my posture, the guilt I know is flashing across my face, and the rigid line of my shoulders.

"Just checking my inventory," I lie smoothly, forcing my heart rate to slow. "A girl needs to make sure her blades are where she left them."

Elias doesn’t push, but the golden hue of his eyes darkens slightly. He stands up, stretching his broad shoulders. He walks past me toward a massive, reinforced steel wardrobe at the back of the loft.

"We need to move," he says, his voice devoid of the husky intimacy from last night. He is back in his element. The strategist. The designer. "The Midnight Gala is tomorrow, but the lower-tier syndicate shows are already bleeding into the meatpacking district. If we want to understand how the Velvet Fang is being distributed, we need to trace the threads from the bottom up."

He tosses me a garment bag.

"Wear this," he instructs. "It’s woven with silver-ash thread. It won’t bind your shifter half like the Velvet Fang, but it will mask your scent. To anyone else, you’ll just smell like expensive perfume and dead magic."

I unzip the bag. Inside is a sleek, black leather jacket tailored to perfection, reinforced with subtle, protective paneling.

"What’s the play, Crowe?" I ask, slipping my arms into the jacket. It fits like a second skin.

"I am a defected hunter who caters to the elite," he replies, buttoning a fresh, dark shirt. "I go where I please. You are my new muse. My bodyguard. Keep your fangs retracted, keep your claws sheathed, and for God’s sake, do not let your shadow out of its cage."

    ELIAS

The slaughterhouse district of Chicago smells exactly as it did a century ago, only now, the blood flowing into the gutters belongs to things that don’t show up on a coroner’s report.

We arrive at an abandoned meatpacking plant just past ten in the morning, though inside, the atmosphere is a suffocating, perpetual midnight. The cavernous space has been transformed into a grotesque runway. Strobe lights slice through thick, artificial fog. Heavy, pulsating bass vibrates the concrete floor, attempting to mask the underlying scent of decay and copper. The audience is a chaotic mix of rogue vampires, corrupt shifter alphas, and human billionaires who pay exorbitant sums to play in the dark.

Zara walks half a step behind me. She is a masterclass in lethal restraint. The silver-ash leather jacket I gave her absorbs the harsh neon lights, turning her into a sleek, impenetrable silhouette. Her eyes constantly scan the rafters, the exits, the shadows between the VIP booths. I can feel the tension radiating from her. She is a predator surrounded by rival packs, and I am the soft, human target she has suddenly decided to protect.

"Keep your eyes on the runway," I murmur, leaning close so she can hear me over the deafening music. "Look for the stiffness in the models. The way the fabric forces their posture."

A line of models marches down the blood-stained concrete catwalk. They are wearing sharp, angular coats and flowing silk gowns, but there is something fundamentally wrong with their movements. Their eyes are hollow. Their steps are too synchronized, too heavy.

I step closer to the edge of the runway, my eyes narrowing. It isn’t just the Velvet Fang binding them. The silk I designed was meant to suppress, but this… this is a perversion of my work. The crimson threads woven into these garments are pulsating with a sick, erratic rhythm. It’s a parasite feeding on a parasite.

Suddenly, my wards flare. The subtle magic woven into my rings burns hot against my skin.

I turn, but before I can identify the threat, Zara is already moving.

A massive man—six and a half feet of pure, corded muscle and gang tattoos—lunges from the shadows of a concrete pillar, a heavy iron pipe swinging in a deadly arc aimed directly at the back of my skull. He has the hot, wet scent of a rogue werewolf. An enforcer. Someone recognized me and decided to cash in a bounty.

Zara doesn’t shout. She doesn’t hesitate. She intercepts the strike with her forearm, the reinforced leather of the jacket absorbing the brunt of the iron pipe with a sickening crack that I feel in my own teeth. But she doesn’t buckle. Using the momentum of his swing, she steps inside his guard, her hand shooting up to grip his throat.

She doesn’t use her claws. She relies on the sheer, terrifying density of her hybrid strength. She slams the enforcer backward, lifting him off his feet and driving his spine into the concrete pillar with enough force to splinter the stone. The man chokes, dropping the pipe. Zara leans in, her face inches from his, her amber eyes flashing with a suppressed, feral rage.

"Walk away," she whispers, her voice a low, vibrating growl that barely cuts through the heavy bass of the club, "or I will pull your vocal cords out through your teeth and use them to tie my boots."

The enforcer’s eyes widen in terror as he registers her unnatural strength. She drops him. He scrambles away, disappearing into the crowd like a beaten dog.

Zara turns back to me, shaking out her bruised forearm. Her chest is heaving, the adrenaline spiking her pulse. "You have a lot of fans in this city, Crowe."

"Occupational hazard," I reply, my voice tight. I look at her arm. "Are you hurt?"

"I heal fast," she mutters, avoiding my gaze. She is hiding something. The tension in her shoulders hasn’t dissipated with the end of the fight.

"Come on," I say, grabbing her uninjured arm. "I saw what I needed to see. Let’s get backstage."

    ZARA

The backstage area is a labyrinth of temporary partitions, racks of clothes, and exhausted, hollow-eyed models staring blankly at makeup mirrors. The smell of the corrupt magic is overpowering here. It makes my stomach churn, a violent reminder of the cage Elias had put me in, though this feels infinitely more malicious.

We slip past a group of distracted stylists into a dimly lit storage alcove. A single garment hangs on a metal rack—a heavy, crimson velvet coat, identical to the ones we just saw on the runway.

Elias approaches it like a bomb technician. He doesn’t touch it with his bare hands. He draws a pair of silver shears from his inner pocket, the metal glowing faintly in the gloom.

    "Watch the door," he commands.

I stand by the edge of the partition, keeping my back to him, scanning the chaotic backstage area. "What are you doing?"

"Extracting a sample," he says. I hear the delicate snip of metal against fabric. "The Velvet Fang was designed to be a static prison. But this… the weave is active. Someone has altered my protocol. They aren’t just using it to bind shifters. They’re using it to farm them."

"Farm them?" I ask, glancing over my shoulder.

Elias is holding a single, glowing red thread in his gloved fingers. His face is pale, his jaw clenched in absolute fury. "The fabric is siphoning the kinetic energy of the trapped shifters and funneling it outward. It’s creating a reservoir of stolen magic. This isn’t a boutique collection, Zara. This is an industrial harvest. Whoever is running this show is preparing to distribute stolen hybrid power to the highest bidders on a massive scale."

My blood runs cold. I know exactly who has the resources, the cruelty, and the twisted vision to execute something this colossal. My mother.

Before I can process the sheer horror of it, a sharp, violent vibration buzzes against my ribs.

    My burner phone.

I pull it from my pocket. The screen is glowing an unnatural, sickly red—a blood-magic priority seal. I tap the screen. A text message materializes in sharp, black lettering.

TARGET: ELIAS CROWE. DEADLINE: MIDNIGHT. CONFIRM KILL OR STRIKE TEAM OMEGA WILL CLEAN THE BOARD. YOUR TREASON IS NOTED, QUILL.

My breath catches in my throat. The words blur together. Midnight. That gives me less than fourteen hours. If I don’t kill Elias, my mother’s syndicate will descend on his atelier, on this club, on anywhere we try to hide, and they will slaughter us both.

I stare at the screen, my hands trembling. The heavy weight of the assassination contract in my pocket feels like an anchor dragging me into an abyss.

    "Zara."

The voice is right beside me. I flinch, dropping the phone. It clatters against the concrete floor, the glowing red text facing upward.

Elias is standing there. The silver shears are still in one hand, the stolen Velvet Fang thread in the other. He looks down at the phone. He reads the glowing red words. The silence that stretches between us is heavier than the oppressive bass vibrating through the walls.

Slowly, deliberately, he looks back up at me. His amber eyes are devoid of the warmth I found in them last night. They are cold. Analytical. The eyes of a man who realizes he has let a viper sleep in his bed.

He looks at my coat, right at the hidden pocket where the thick parchment of the contract rests.

"You didn’t burn it," he says, his voice a lethal, quiet whisper. "The contract. You kept it."

I take a step back, my heart hammering a frantic, desperate rhythm against my ribs. "Elias, I…"

"You slept in my bed," he continues, stepping into my space, his sheer physical presence overwhelming in the cramped alcove. "You let me promise you a cure. And all the while, you were just waiting for the right moment to slip the blade between my ribs."

"No!" I say, my voice cracking. "That’s not—"

"Who holds the leash, Zara?" he demands, cutting me off. The silver shears gleam menacingly in the dim light. "Who is threatening to clean the board?"

I look at the man I was sent to kill. The man who gave me the only peace I have ever known, and who I must now betray to survive. The timer is ticking.

"My mother," I whisper, the truth tasting like ash on my tongue. "And if I don’t kill you by midnight, Elias… she will kill us both."
