The subterranean boardroom beneath the estate is a monument to brutality dressed in mahogany and leather.

Thirty of the most ruthless men in the Chicago Bratva sit around the massive conference table. The air is thick with the acrid scent of imported cigars, expensive cologne, and the distinct, coiled tension of predators forced into a confined space. They are my brigadiers, my captains, the violent architects of my empire. And every single pair of eyes in the room is locked on the woman sitting at my right hand.

I brought Katerina into the wolf’s den to make a point.

After her infiltration of my study yesterday, the fragile illusion of her being a mere pawn was shattered. She knows I engineered her family’s collapse. She knows the depth of my obsession. Yet, when I ordered her to dress for this council, she did not scream. She did not break. She walked down the marble staircase wearing a structured, high-necked black gown that looked less like a dress and more like armor, the diamond collar resting heavily against her throat.

I observe the collective pulse of the room. The men are assessing her, searching for the weakness they believe she represents. A wife is a liability. A bride bought with debt is a vulnerability.

Viktor, a scarred, veteran captain who controls the south side docks, exhales a thick plume of smoke. He leans forward, his heavy forearms resting on the table. He has been testing my boundaries for months, and the incident with the Chechen supplier at the club has given him the perfect ammunition.

"With all due respect, Pakhan," Viktor rasps, his Russian thick and abrasive. "We are bleeding territory on the east side, and the Chechens are emboldened. Some of the men are wondering if your focus has been… diverted by domestic acquisitions."

The room goes dead silent. It is a direct challenge to my authority, wrapped in the guise of syndicate concern.

I do not reach for the gun at my hip. I do not raise my voice to crush him. Before I can even shift my weight, the air in the room changes. The subtle, freezing shift of atmospheric pressure originates directly beside me.

    Katerina leans forward.

I know the mathematics of this room.

If I sit silently and let Levon defend me, I remain a liability in their eyes. If Levon shows a fracture in his control, these men will tear him apart, and the moment he falls, I am nothing but a spoil of war to be passed around the very table we are sitting at. I am surviving in a cage with a tiger, and I cannot afford to let the jackals break in.

I do not look at Levon. I fix my gaze entirely on Viktor. I let the cold, aristocratic training of my bloodline bleed into the hardened steel of my new reality.

"Your men are wondering about my husband’s focus, Viktor?" I ask. My voice is quiet, perfectly modulated, yet it slices through the heavy cigar smoke like a scalpel.

Viktor stiffens. He is not used to being addressed by a woman in this sanctuary. "This is Bratva business, Gospodzha."

"And I am the Bratva’s Tsarina," I reply smoothly, tracing the rim of my crystal water glass. "If your men on the east side are bleeding territory, it is not because the Pakhan is distracted. It is because you have grown slow, Viktor. You blame the Chechens for your own logistical failures."

A low murmur ripples through the seated men. Viktor’s face flushes a dark, mottled red. "You speak out of turn—"

"I speak the truth of the ledger," I interrupt, my tone dropping to a lethal, velvet whisper that mirrors Levon’s exact cadence. "The Chechen push at the docks was telegraphed three weeks ago through their shipping manifests. You missed it. Do not attempt to use my presence in this house to mask your incompetence. If you cannot hold your borders, step down, and Levon will find a captain who does not complain about his own bleeding."

The silence that follows is absolute. The social dynamic of the room forcefully realigns. I feel the heavy, burning weight of Levon’s stare on the side of my face. The men do not look at me with lust or dismissal anymore. They look at me with a sudden, wary respect.

I played the role of the ruthless monarch’s wife perfectly. I defended the monster who destroyed my family, simply because the alternative was my own destruction.

Levon slowly leans back in his leather chair, a dark, terrifying smirk curving his lips. He glances at his platinum watch.

It is exactly three-fifteen in the afternoon.

Katerina’s tactical prediction from the library hits my brain a microsecond before the concrete above us ruptures.

Between two and four in the afternoon, the sun hits the frozen surface at an angle that completely blinds the lenses. I would send a strike team straight across the ice at three-fifteen.

The deafening, concussive boom of military-grade C4 detonating in the upper courtyard violently shakes the subterranean boardroom. The crystal chandeliers shatter, raining jagged glass over the mahogany table. The heavy reinforced doors at the far end of the hall blow inward, tearing off their steel hinges in a cloud of pulverized stone and black smoke.

Automatic gunfire instantly shreds the air. The Chechens did not wait for a negotiation. They came for a massacre.

My brigadiers are already drawing their weapons, flipping the massive table for cover, shouting tactical commands in Russian.

My training dictates that I draw my weapon, secure the command position, and coordinate the counter-offensive. My duty as the Pakhan is to the syndicate.

    I ignore all of it.

The primal, violently possessive instinct of the pack overrides every logical protocol in my brain. The second the doors blow, I do not reach for my holster. I lunge sideways.

I grab Katerina by the waist of her gown and drag her violently to the marble floor just as a spray of high-caliber bullets rips through the back of her leather chair. The wood splinters into deadly shrapnel.

"Get down!" I roar, twisting my body in mid-air to ensure I take the brunt of the impact.

We crash onto the floor. I cage her entirely beneath me, pressing her small frame against the freezing marble, my massive shoulders forming a physical shield over her head and spine. The noise is apocalyptic. The sharp, rhythmic cracks of AK-47s drown out the screams of my men.

I feel a sudden, white-hot punch of kinetic force tear through the back of my left shoulder. The impact knocks the breath from my lungs, but I do not shift my weight. I curl tighter over her, burying my face in the curve of her neck, letting my own flesh absorb the storm of lead and shattered stone meant to kill her.

The world is reduced to darkness, deafening noise, and the crushing weight of Levon Sokolov.

My ears are ringing so violently I can barely hear the gunfire tearing the boardroom apart. Dust and smoke choke the air, burning my lungs. I am pinned flat against the floor, trapped beneath the solid, immovable wall of his chest.

I wait for the fatal impact. I wait for the bullets to rip through us.

Instead, Levon groans—a low, guttural sound of pure agony vibrating deep within his chest. His body jerks hard above me.

"Levon," I gasp, struggling to push against his good shoulder.

"Do not move," he snarls, his breath hot and ragged against my ear.

He shifts just enough to draw his sidearm with his right hand, firing blindly over his shoulder into the smoke, a suppressing barrage to buy us seconds. He hauls me up by the strap of my gown. "Run! To the armory!"

He pushes me forward, shielding my back with his body as we sprint through the chaotic, blood-slicked hall. Bodies of guards and Chechen hitmen litter the floor. The smoke is blinding.

We reach the heavy titanium door of the subterranean panic room. Levon slams his bloody palm against the biometric scanner. The deadbolts retract with a heavy clank. He shoves me inside into the darkness and drags the door shut behind us.

The massive locking mechanism engages, instantly cutting off the deafening roar of the firefight outside.

Emergency red lighting flickers on, bathing the small, reinforced steel box in a sinister crimson glow. I turn around, my heart battering against my ribs, struggling to process the sheer velocity of the violence we just escaped.

Levon leans heavily against the sealed door.

His bespoke suit jacket is shredded. The left side of his white shirt is soaked in a massive, rapidly expanding stain of dark crimson. Blood drips steadily from his fingertips, pooling onto the steel floor grates.

He is breathing in harsh, shallow rasps. His face is pale, the cold mask of the untouchable Pakhan completely shattered by physical trauma.

I stare at the blood coating my own hands—his blood. It smears across the diamond collar he locked around my throat. The realization hits me with the force of a physical blow. The architect of my ruin, the monster who spent three years destroying my family just to own me, threw his life away to protect mine. He broke his own rules. He abandoned his men to ensure I kept breathing.

The terrifying paradox of him paralyzes me.

The burning agony in my shoulder radiates down to my spine. The bullet shattered the scapula. I am bleeding out, and the syndicate is at war on the other side of four inches of titanium.

I slide slowly down the reinforced door until I hit the floor, my legs sprawling out in front of me. I look up at Katerina.

She is standing in the center of the crimson-lit room, her black gown coated in dust, her eyes wide and fixed on the blood pooling beneath my arm. She is looking at me not as a captor, but as a casualty. The brilliant, calculating mind that mapped my fortress and uncovered my darkest secrets is currently frozen in shock.

She knows what I did to her father. She knows I am the reason she is wearing those diamonds. This is her perfect opportunity. The cage door is theoretically shut, but the warden is bleeding out on the floor.

I pull the customized Sig Sauer from my right holster.

The metal is slick with my own blood. My hands are trembling—a physical weakness I have not permitted myself to show in fifteen years. I rack the slide back, chambering a round. The sharp, mechanical click echoes loudly in the tight space.

Katerina flinches, taking a half-step backward, bracing for the execution she thinks is coming.

I do not point the weapon at her.

I flip the gun, gripping the hot barrel with my bleeding fingers, and hold the heavy grip out toward her.

"Take it," I rasp, coughing. A terrible, metallic taste fills my mouth.

She stares at the weapon, her chest heaving, refusing to reach for it. "Levon…"

"I said take it, Katerina!" I demand, my voice breaking under the strain of the blood loss.

Slowly, her trembling fingers wrap around the grip. I let go, leaving the loaded weapon entirely in her possession.

I lean my head back against the cold steel of the door, exposing the vulnerable line of my throat. I strip away the final layer of my architecture, offering her the ultimate control she has been fighting for since the moment she walked down the aisle.

"You read the files," I whisper, my vision beginning to blur at the edges. "You know exactly what I am. You know what I did to bring you here. The safety is off. There are fifteen rounds in the magazine."

I lock my fading gaze with her wide, terrified eyes.

"Shoot me, Katerina, and you walk out of this bunker a widow with my empire at your feet. Or you patch me up, and you accept that your soul belongs to me forever. Make your choice."
