Where forbidden tales are told.

Elara Voss stood fiercely in front of the heavy oak doors at the end of the servant’s corridor, her boots planted firmly against the floorboards. The freezing draft from the vestibule bit at her bare legs beneath the heavy inspector’s coat, but she didn’t shiver. She stared down the towering Mothman, her heart hammering against her ribs with a mixture of terror and absolute, furious clarity.

"I refuse your sacrifice," Elara snarled, her voice echoing in the narrow space. She kept her body firmly planted between Bram and the exit. "I did not tear up my life’s work so you could martyr yourself in the snow. You don’t get to erase yourself to save me, Bram. We are going to fight them, but we are going to do it my way."

Bram’s massive shoulders slumped, his silver antennae drooping with the weight of his own despair. "Elara, if the magistrate arrests you—"

"They won’t," she interrupted, stepping forward and pressing her hands flat against the thick velvet fur of his chest. "You are thinking like a desperate man. You think the only way to win is to destroy yourself. That is not romantic, Bram. It is a waste. The magic takes your memories because you pull the heat in a violent, unbalanced panic to fuel a dead grid. But what if we don’t feed the grid? What if we feed the evidence?"

Bram frowned, his dark, multifaceted eyes searching hers. "I do not understand."

"When we did the deep calibration in the boiler room, the heat extracted the visual data of the subterranean pipes from the magic, but it burned the scales to ash because the draw was chaotic," Elara explained, her inspector’s mind working at lightspeed. "But winter memories are just thermal data locked in a crystal structure. If we can balance the magic circuit perfectly—if we create a closed, meticulously controlled loop of intimacy where I give heat at the exact rate you absorb it—we can extract the map without destroying the host crystal."

"To what end?" Bram asked softly, his claws gently resting on her hips. "Even if we extract the map, where does the image go? It will just dissipate into golden dust."

"Not if we give it a permanent housing," Elara said, a fierce smile touching her lips. "In my satchel, I have a master municipal heat clock. It’s a heavy brass diagnostic mechanism with a crystalline face, designed to record and lock unalterable grid data for the county courts. If we bring that clock into the wing-tent, and we channel the balanced energy directly into it, we can permanently infuse the undeniable truth of the pipe map into a public device."

Bram’s breath hitched. "Overwrite their fake data with physical, magical proof."

"Exactly," Elara whispered. "But to balance the circuit, we can’t be desperate. It requires absolute control. It requires total trust. Are you with me?"

Bram looked at the heavy exterior doors behind her, and then down into her eyes. The desperate, martyr-like tension drained from his frame, replaced by a profound, reverent awe.

"I am with you, Elara," he murmured. "Lead the way."

They hurried back to his private quarters, locking the heavy bedroom door behind them. The room was freezing, the air biting and still. Elara retrieved her leather satchel from the floor and pulled out the master municipal heat clock. It was a heavy, ornate cylinder of polished brass and thick glass, the size of a small lantern. She set it directly in the center of the dark linens on Bram’s wide bed.

Bram unhooked the leather pouch from his belt and carefully emptied his remaining ember scales around the base of the clock. Dozens of teardrop crystals pulsed with a soft, warm, golden light.

Elara shrugged off her heavy coat, tossing it onto a chair. She stood before him in only her thermal henley, her pulse racing. Bram reached up and unhooked the extension of the thick blue bell cord from the wall, draping the braided tassel across the pillows so it remained within arm’s reach of the mattress.

"The stop protocol is active," Bram said, his voice dropping into that low, resonant baritone that vibrated in her chest. He stepped close to her, his sheer size dominating the space. "We must regulate this perfectly. I need you to guide the flow. Can you see the threads without your goggles?"

"Yes," Elara breathed. Her innate ability flared to life, rendering the ambient temperature of the room in cool blues, while the localized heat of Bram’s body glowed in a steady, deep crimson. "I can see you."

Bram dipped two of his clawed fingers into his small pouch of blue wing-dust. He didn’t ask her to hold out her arms this time. Instead, he met her gaze, asking the silent question.

"Everywhere," Elara whispered, answering it. "No boundaries tonight. But we check in. Step by step."

Bram’s eyes darkened with raw desire. He tossed the pouch aside and simply wrapped his large, velvet-furred arms around her waist, lifting her effortlessly onto the center of the bed, right beside the brass clock and the glowing scales.

He climbed onto the mattress with her, his massive frame shifting gracefully. He knelt over her, his four wine-red wings extending outward and sweeping down to form a tight, flawless dome. The wing-tent closed, instantly silencing the howling wind outside.

The air within the velvet enclosure grew thick with the scent of ozone and dark honey. Elara lay back against the pillows, her eyes locked on his.

"Tell me what you want, Elara," Bram rumbled, his cold hands resting gently on her thighs, waiting for her explicit command. "Tell me you want this."

"I want you to take my shirt off," she said, her voice steady despite the frantic beating of her heart. "I want to feel your skin against mine."

Bram moved with agonizing, deliberate care. His sharp claws caught the hem of her thermal henley, pulling it up and over her head. He discarded the fabric, his gaze sweeping over her bare chest. The localized heat at the base of his wings flared, the crimson threads in Elara’s vision instantly brightening to a scorching white-hot intensity.

"You’re spiking," Elara warned softly, reaching up to press her hands against the dense charcoal fur of his chest. "Pace it, Bram. Keep the circuit balanced. Breathe with me."

Bram closed his eyes, inhaling deeply through his nose. His massive chest expanded, and he forced the erratic, desperate heat of his desire to level out into a steady, controlled hum. "I am steady," he murmured. "May I touch you?"

    "Yes."

Bram lowered his mouth to her collarbone, his cold lips tracing the line of her throat. His large hands mapped the curve of her waist, sliding upwards to cup her breasts. Elara gasped, her back arching off the mattress. The sensation of his velvet fur against her sensitive skin was intoxicating.

She let the dream-state open, voluntarily pushing her thermal energy outward, but she didn’t just let it flood the room. Using her innate vision, she watched her own heat—a vibrant, pulsing gold—reach out toward his crimson threads.

"Slower," she whispered, her hands tangling in the fur at the nape of his neck. "Draw it slowly, Bram. Match my pulse."

Bram groaned, a deep, primal sound that vibrated against her skin. He shifted his weight, his hips settling between her parted legs. He nudged her thighs wider, his hands sliding down to trace the sensitive skin of her inner thighs.

"Are you ready for me?" he asked, his breath hot against her ear. "If the draw is too much, pull the cord."

"The draw is perfect," Elara promised, her fingers gripping his broad shoulders. "Come inside me."

Bram entered her with a slow, agonizingly smooth push. The physical connection was a jolt of pure lightning. Elara cried out, her eyes flying wide open as the magical circuit connected perfectly.

The air inside the wing-tent began to shimmer.

Instead of the violent, explosive chaos of the boiler room, the thermal exchange was a masterclass in control. Elara watched the threads of their combined heat weave together in the air—a flawless helix of his deep crimson and her brilliant gold.

Bram began to move, his thrusts slow, deep, and measured. Every flex of his powerful hips, every scrape of his velvet fur against her skin, generated a wave of thermal energy. But he didn’t hoard it, and he didn’t forcefully rip it from her. He coaxed it, gently pulling the heat exactly as she offered it.

"Check in," Bram murmured, his forehead resting against hers, his silver antennae trembling as they brushed her cheeks. "Does this feel right?"

"It feels incredible," she sobbed softly, her nails lightly scoring his back. "Keep this rhythm. Don’t speed up."

As their pleasure built, the physical evidence of their balanced connection began to manifest. From the vibrating velvet of his chest and the undersides of his wings, golden dust began to fall like soft rain. But it didn’t swirl violently. It drifted downward, deliberately drawn toward the heavy brass clock sitting on the mattress beside them.

The dozen ember scales surrounding the clock began to hum.

"It’s working," Elara gasped, her body drawing tight as the friction pushed her closer to the edge. Through her heat-vision, she saw the golden helix of their energy split. Half of it cycled back into Bram’s core, healing the cold void, while the other half channeled directly into the ember scales.

"I can feel the memories," Bram breathed, his eyes wide with wonder. "They aren’t burning. They are echoing."

"Hold there," Elara commanded, her voice dropping into a desperate register as the climax built in her blood. She reached her hand out blindly, her fingers brushing the cold brass of the municipal clock. "Channel it into the glass, Bram. Now. Give it to me!"

Bram drove into her, completely surrendering his control to her guidance. Elara shattered beneath him, her climax releasing a massive, concentrated wave of pure, voluntary heat. Bram absorbed it, his own body answering with a powerful, shuddering release that tore a low, rumbling growl from his throat.

But the energy didn’t explode outward.

Guided by Elara’s precise thermal control, the sheer force of their climax hit the ember scales. The teardrop crystals flared with blinding light, projecting the visual data of the subterranean pipes into the air. The golden wing-dust caught the projection, swirling it into a concentrated beam of magic that slammed directly into the crystal face of the municipal heat clock.

The brass mechanism hissed, glowing white-hot for a fraction of a second before cooling instantly.

    The wing-tent fell silent.

Bram collapsed heavily beside her on the mattress, his massive wings resting gently over them like a weighted blanket. His chest heaved, his cold core thoroughly and perfectly warmed. He wasn’t panting with exhaustion; he was breathing with the deep, satisfied rhythm of a perfectly fed biological system.

Elara lay beside him, her skin flushed, her body humming with a profound, lethargic bliss.

She turned her head to look at the center of the bed.

The dozen ember scales were still there. They had not turned to ash. They rested quietly on the dark linens, their internal light slightly dimmed, but their physical structure entirely intact. Bram’s memories were safe.

But the municipal master clock was transformed.

The crystal face of the device no longer showed the standard county dials. It was permanently, irrevocably infused with the glowing, golden map of the town’s hearthline. Every pipe, every stolen residential line, and the massive bypass funneling heat down the mountain was burned into the glass in undeniable, magical truth.

"We did it," Elara whispered, a tear of pure relief tracking down her cheek.

Bram slowly pushed himself up on one elbow. He looked at the clock, and then down at her. His multifaceted dark eyes were soft, filled with a staggering amount of adoration.

"Look at your wings," Elara murmured, reaching up to touch the velvet feathers extending over them.

Bram turned his head. The three thick, deadened bands of ashen gray on his upper wings had not entirely vanished, but they were no longer dead. A faint, beautiful flush of wine-red was beginning to bleed back into the gray velvet. The perfectly balanced circuit had not just saved his memories; it had begun to heal the psychological and physical damage of his past overdraws.

"You healed the void," Bram whispered, his voice thick with emotion.

Elara shifted, immediately turning her attention to the aftercare protocols. She sat up, wrapping the dropped-feather blanket around her bare shoulders. She reached for her satchel and pulled out the pre-prepared vial of saltwater and thick honey.

"Drink," she ordered gently, uncorking the vial and pressing it to his lips.

Bram drank the briny, sweet mixture, his throat working as he replenished his electrolytes. When he finished, he gently took her left hand. He pressed his thumb against her index finger, silently counting for three seconds to check her core temperature.

"Ninety-eight point six," he reported softly, kissing her fingertips. "You are perfectly stable."

Elara smiled. She moved closer, resting her knees against his hips, and reached up to his brow. With incredibly tender, meticulous care, she began to groom his silver antennae, smoothing the sensitive velvet to calm the lingering magical static. Bram closed his eyes, leaning into her touch with a low, rumbling purr vibrating deep in his chest.

"Bram," Elara said softly, her hands framing his face. He opened his eyes to look at her. "The inn doesn’t need our heat anymore. The town doesn’t need us to fuel the furnace. I didn’t do this to balance a ledger."

"I know," he murmured, his large hands coming up to hold her wrists.

"I did it because I love you," she said, the words falling from her lips with the absolute certainty of a universally accepted truth. "I want to be in this room, under these wings, entirely for us."

Bram’s breath caught. He pulled her down, burying his face in the crook of her neck, holding her so tightly she felt the steady, powerful beat of his heart against her ribs.

"I love you, Elara," he swore against her skin, his voice a fierce, unyielding vow. "My chosen. My home."

They held each other in the quiet warmth of the wing-tent, perfectly content, perfectly balanced. The storm outside seemed like a distant, irrelevant memory.

    Knock. Knock. Knock.

The sharp, urgent sound of a fist against the heavy bedroom door shattered the peace.

Bram’s wings instantly snapped back, dismantling the tent, though he kept his arms wrapped securely around Elara.

"Elara! Bram!" Ysra’s voice crackled through the thick oak, sharp with panic. "Get dressed. Now!"

Elara scrambled out of the bed, her inspector’s instincts instantly overriding the post-coital haze. She grabbed her thermal shirt and canvas trousers from the floor. "Ysra, what is it? Did the furnace die?"

"No!" the old cook yelled back through the door. "The pass is clear enough for travel! The magistrate is here! They brought a dozen enforcers with them, and they are demanding you both surrender the property!"

Elara froze, her hands pausing on the buttons of her coat. She looked across the room at Bram. He was already pulling on his dark vest, his massive wings flaring behind him, his jaw set in a hard, grim line.

They had run out of time.

But as Elara’s gaze fell to the bed, the fear evaporated, replaced by a cold, righteous fury. She reached out and picked up the heavy brass municipal clock. The crystal face glowed with the undeniable, golden truth of the council’s theft.

She turned to Bram, hoisting the heavy mechanism under her arm.

"Let’s go show them what a code violation actually looks like," Elara said.
