Where forbidden tales are told.

The ice beneath our boots does not simply crack; it disintegrates.

Gravity asserts its absolute authority, and the floor of the deep vault swallows us whole. We are plunging into the fissure, plummeting away from the pale, sickly blue luminescence of Vespera and into a suffocating, absolute black.

The air rushing past my face is no longer just freezing—it is dead. It is the heavy, oxygen-starved atmosphere of the Umbrafell under-realm, a physical weight that presses against the lungs and demands surrender.

I do not surrender. I am an Aurorakin blade. I twist in the freefall, driving the condensed aurora light of my hands outward, trying to catch the jagged walls of the abyss. But there is no ice here to anchor to. There is only smooth, impenetrable obsidian rock.

A heavy, dark mass collides with me mid-air.

Noctis. The chains of aurora light I bound his wrists with are still glowing, tethering us together in the crushing dark. He twists his body, using his own momentum to force my back toward his chest, shielding my spine from the incoming impact.

"Brace," his voice grates against my ear, the sound barely audible over the roaring wind.

He does not pull from the ambient air to break our fall. He pulls from himself. I feel the exact moment the magic demands its toll. A violent shudder rips through his solid frame, and the temperature of his right shoulder plummets instantly. He weaves the dense, kinetic shadow-net just as we hit the floor of the cavern.

The impact is brutal, a bone-rattling crash that forces the air from my lungs. The shadow-net absorbs the lethal velocity, then dissipates into mist, dropping us onto a surface of coarse, crushed stone.

I roll instantly, my combat instincts overriding the shock. I snap to a crouch, pulling the ambient light from my own iridescent skeleton to illuminate the immediate threat.

My ribs flare with violent, chittering bursts of green and violet. In the absolute dark of the Umbrafell realm, I am a blinding, screaming beacon.

Noctis is kneeling a few paces away. His breathing is ragged. His left arm was already hanging useless from our first fall; now, his right shoulder is locked in a rigid, unnatural posture. The silver bones beneath his dark purple skin in that quadrant have lost their metallic sheen, frosted over with a permanent, dead gray.

He has paid the price of the weave. The heat is gone, forever.

Before I can assess the damage, the darkness around us detaches itself from the cavern walls.

They do not make a sound. There are at least thirty of them. Umbrafell warriors, their black-purple skin rendering them practically invisible in the gloom, save for the glint of their silver bones and the razor-sharp curves of their obsidian horns. Spears of condensed, localized gravity are leveled directly at my glowing chest.

I am the enemy in their inner sanctum. A creature of light in the heart of the eclipse. The killing intent radiating from them is a physical pressure, suffocating and unified.

    "Hold the strike," Noctis commands.

He does not yell. He does not plead. He speaks with the low, grinding absolute authority of the eclipse priesthood. He stands up, ignoring the dead weight of his limbs, and steps directly between the perimeter of spears and my body.

He raises his wrists. The aurora bands I forged are still locked around his skin, biting into his flesh, casting a harsh glare on his face.

"She is the Aurora Bride," a voice hisses from the circle, dripping with centuries of blood feud. "She casts no shadow. She is an abomination of the light. Step aside, Priest."

"She is my asset," Noctis replies smoothly, his voice echoing off the vaulted rock. "And she is the only reason the Death God’s mist did not consume the Zenith Sanctuary. The surface is cracking. Vespera’s throne has defaulted on its bargain with the Underworld."

A ripple of unease passes through the circle of warriors. The social architecture of the Umbrafell shifts, grinding against the rigid laws of their hatred. Noctis is playing a dangerous, high-stakes game of public perception. He is framing my capture of him as his capture of me, aligning our survival with the survival of their entire subterranean network.

The public scrutiny is a physical weight. The warriors look at his glowing chains, then at my defiant posture. We are forced into a unified front by the sheer gravity of their collective suspicion.

"If she is your asset," the lieutenant sneers, stepping forward, his silver eyes narrowing, "prove she is under your heel. The light blinds our paths."

The lieutenant does not wait for permission. He snaps his fingers, and a spike of concentrated, jagged shadow launches directly at my throat.

It is a lethal test. A political execution disguised as a security measure.

I begin to draw the aurora to my hands to deflect it, calculating the angle, ready to shatter the dark.

    Noctis moves faster.

He steps entirely into my space, eclipsing my glowing form with his broad back. He throws his remaining functional hand outward, his fingers splayed.

The magic he weaves is not a simple shield. It is a dense, physical wall of absolute void, a vacuum that swallows the lieutenant’s shadow-spike whole. The collision makes no sound, but the shockwave ripples through the cavern, dusting us in fine rock powder.

I watch the back of Noctis’s neck. I see the exact, horrifying moment the cost is extracted.

The magic races down his spine. The heat is stripped from his intercostal muscles, the flesh turning a pallid, bruised gray as the permanent frostbite sets in. A low, involuntary hiss escapes his teeth. He has just sacrificed the warmth of his core to block a strike meant for the enemy.

The cavern falls into a stunned, heavy silence.

The lieutenant takes a half-step back, his spear lowering a fraction of an inch. To attack a priest who has just paid the flesh-tithe is heresy. Noctis has leveraged their own religious and magical laws against them, building a fortress out of his own sensory loss.

"Take us to the deep transit," Noctis orders, his voice entirely devoid of the agony I know is shredding his nervous system. "The council must be warned. The surface is falling."

The warriors part, a slow, reluctant yielding to the hierarchy of the priesthood.

I fall in step closely behind him as we are marched through the winding, jagged tunnels of the Umbrafell stronghold. The ambient temperature here is punishing, but it is nothing compared to the absolute zero radiating from Noctis’s spine.

I stare at the frost creeping across his dark skin. The pieces of the puzzle do not fit.

The rumors of the Zenith Sanctuary paint the eclipse priests as heartless manipulators, creatures who would step over the frozen corpses of their own mothers to gain an inch of political leverage. Noctis survived the Sunless Massacre—a slaughter perpetrated by my people, an event that left him as the sole breathing entity in a monastery of frozen statues. He has every biological and historical reason to let that shadow-spike tear my throat out.

Yet, he has systematically dismantled his own nervous system to keep me breathing. First his hand. Then his shoulder. Now his core.

He is not protecting an asset. A calculating priest would not pay a permanent physiological price for a disposable tool. He is protecting a linchpin. The realization shifts the entire foundation of my defense. He is manipulating the future, and I am the exact instrument he needs to break a prophecy. He is keeping me alive not out of mercy, but out of a desperate, terrifying obsession with the mechanics of fate.

The tunnel widens into a small, naturally formed alcove off the main thoroughfare. The warriors halt, gesturing for us to step inside while they secure the path ahead.

The heavy iron grate slams shut, locking us in a space barely large enough for two bodies.

The sudden isolation amplifies the quiet.

Noctis leans heavily against the cold rock wall, his chin dropping to his chest. The adrenaline of the confrontation is fading, leaving only the catastrophic reality of the heat-loss. His large frame is wracked by a violent, deep-tissue shudder. It is not the shivering of someone who is cold; it is the physiological collapse of a body that has had its thermal anchors violently severed.

I stand a foot away. My skeleton pulses with a steady, ambient glow, casting shifting prisms of light across his graying skin.

Below us, on the uneven floor, the long, dense line of his shadow stretches out. It creeps across the stone, defying the angle of my light, and docks perfectly against the empty space at my heels.

    The mate-shadow.

The moment the alignment locks, the sensory overload hits me like a physical blow. The absolute void of his presence screams for the ambient energy of my light. The air between us thickens, humming with a frequency that makes my crescent horns ache.

I can feel the exact shape of the emptiness inside him. It is a gnawing, hollow ache, a sensory starvation where the warmth used to be. And my body—a body forged in the freezing upper atmosphere, a body that radiates the temperature of the Long Night—suddenly feels an agonizing, biological imperative to fill that void.

    I step forward.

I do not think about the blood feud. I do not think about the prophecy. I think only of the catastrophic vacuum in his chest.

Noctis’s head snaps up. His solid silver eyes lock onto mine. He senses the shift in my posture, the microscopic yielding of my guard.

"Don’t," he rasps, his voice ragged.

"You are going into shock," I say. My voice is a low, glacial hum. I close the distance between us to a matter of inches. The ambient light from my collarbone drifts across his face.

He inhales sharply. The contrast of my icy presence against his deadened nerves causes a violent, magnetic spark. He wants to pull away, to maintain the discipline of the priest, but the mate-shadow anchors him in place.

I raise my hand. I do not touch his skin. I hold my palm a millimeter above the frosted, dead flesh of his chest. I let the pure, unadulterated aurora light from my marrow bleed outward. It is not heat. It is raw, kinetic energy, a frequency of life that vibrates against the silence of his sacrifice.

Noctis closes his eyes. A ragged sigh escapes his lips as his body instinctively leans into the hover of my hand. The threshold of touch is a razor wire vibrating between us. The intimacy of the exchange—my light bleeding into his void, his shadow anchoring my emptiness—is suffocating, overwhelming, far more invasive than any physical penetration.

He leans down, his face dropping toward the crook of my neck, seeking the epicenter of the glow. His breath ghosts across my collarbone, a desperate, shuddering intake of my frequency.

We are a fraction of a breath away from crossing the line. From turning the first key in the bond.

A harsh, metallic screech shatters the air.

The iron grate of the alcove is wrenched open. The blinding glare of a dozen localized gravity-torches floods the small space.

Noctis snaps back, his posture instantly rigid, the mask of the ruthless priest slamming back into place. I drop my hand, the aurora light retreating into my bones, leaving the air between us cold and empty.

The Umbrafell lieutenant stands in the doorway, his silver eyes darting between us, his face twisted in a mask of deep, unadulterated suspicion.

"The council will see you now," the lieutenant says, his voice dripping with disgust as he looks at the lingering proximity between the shadow and the light. "Do not keep the dark waiting."
