Where forbidden tales are told.

The amber hologram stutters, collapsing into a shower of digital sparks before vanishing back into the golden seams of Nyra’s abdomen.

I hit the cold, reinforced glass of the stasis tube behind me. My ceramic spine collides with the cylinder with a sharp clack, but I barely register the impact. The frigid temperature of the preservation fluid seeps through my blue-white glaze, a violent contrast to the searing, over-clocked heat still racing through my internal wires.

Build her black. Build her so no one sees her coming.

The voice in the projection had been mine. Colder, older, dressed in the heavy, blood-red velvet of the High Council, but unmistakably mine.

I stare at Nyra. She stands perfectly still in the dim, freezing cathedral of the Enamel Vault. The cylindrical key is still slotted into her pelvic resonance chamber; the two soft-enamel locks still hang from my exposed sternum. The circuit between us is broken, the physical distance severing the deafening loop of pleasure that had just possessed my core.

"Senn." Nyra’s voice vibrates, a low, mechanical hum that rattles the glass tubes around us. Her four golden eyes are dilated, the irises blown wide, struggling to process the sudden drop in our synchronized thermal output.

"I ordered it," I whisper. My internal fans scream, desperately trying to vent the panic spiking in my chest. "Thirty-four years ago, when the crown commissioned a new line of Vanguard shadows. I was the archivist who drafted the structural blueprints. I embedded the code."

I look at my translucent, milky-white hands. They are trembling.

"I knew the court would eventually force me to the throne," I say, the arithmetic of a decades-old scheme locking into place with sickening clarity. "I knew the power of the Great Kiln would turn me into the very tyrant I despised. So I built a failsafe. A weapon no one would ever notice, programmed to execute me the moment I took the Royal Seal."

I had looked at this beautiful, lethal creature and seen only a tool. A disposable contingency plan for my own morality. I had done to her exactly what the Princes of Oris had done to me: I had stripped her of her agency before she was even pulled from the fire.

A heavy, grinding shudder shakes the floorboards. Dust drifts down from the vaulted ceiling.

"The Vanguard engineering squads are breaching the outer blast doors," Nyra states. Her internal sensors seamlessly pivot back to the perimeter threat, ignoring the existential horror of the memory. "We have approximately twelve minutes before they cut through the brass."

"Nyra, did you hear me?" I step away from the glass, my voice cracking. "I am the reason you have a kill-order buried in your core. I am the one who enslaved you to a command you cannot fight."

Nyra closes the distance between us. She does not move with the hesitation of a betrayed servant. She moves with the absolute, terrifying gravity of a predator claiming its space.

"You gave me the white key," she vibrates, stopping mere inches from my face.

"That doesn’t erase what I did—"

"You gave me the white key," she repeats, her voice dropping an octave, the sound bypassing my auditory sensors and humming directly against my ceramic ribs. "The crown made me a shadow. The code made me a weapon. But you are the one who handed me my own trigger. You looked at me, Senn. Not as a failsafe. As a priority."

She reaches out. Her intact right hand, tipped in sharpened steel, cups the side of my jaw. The black enamel of her palm is burning hot, the heat from her freshly soldered wires transferring to my cool, white glaze.

"I do not care what a future version of you commanded thirty-four years ago," Nyra says, her four golden eyes locking onto mine with a starving, desperate fixation. "I am not tethered to a memory. I am tethered to the archivist standing in front of me. Extract the Kiln code. Secure the Vault. Then, we write our own logic."

The sheer, immovable weight of her devotion strikes me like a physical blow. She is completely dismissing the hierarchy of creator and creation. I am no longer her architect, and she is no longer my asset. We are just two cracked porcelain shells in the dark, choosing each other over the fire.

I nod, forcing my core to stabilize. The math is simple now. Survive the next ten minutes.

I turn back to the master terminal. The brass interface is still glowing with the Vault’s decryption sequence. I press my hands flat against the console, driving a concentrated burst of heat into the arrays. The terminal accepts my thermal signature. A heavy, ceramic data-slate ejects from the slot beneath the screen: the master ignition cipher for the Great Kiln.

"I have the code," I say, pulling the slate free. "If I broadcast this cipher with a corrupted sequence, the Kiln’s ignition will fail. The ten thousand cores will remain blank."

"Initiate Vault lockdown," Nyra orders, her optics scanning the ceiling. "The Vanguard is through the first layer of brass. If you seal the Vault from the inside, the secondary acid purge will flood the outer corridor. It will buy us exactly three hours before they can attempt another breach."

    I hit the manual override.

A series of deafening, hydraulic slams echoes through the cavern as the massive internal deadbolts of the Enamel Vault slide into place. The ambient amber lighting shifts to a deep, secure blue. We are completely sealed in. A tomb of un-fired potential, utterly isolated from the network, the crown, and the Vanguard.

The silence that follows is absolute, broken only by the synchronized hum of the thousands of stasis tubes and the quiet, erratic ticking of Nyra’s cooling fans.

We have three hours. Three hours of unmonitored, absolute safety.

I turn around. Nyra is already watching me.

The tension in the room shifts instantly, the adrenaline of the heist converting into a heavy, suffocating gravity. My internal temperature spikes, a warning flashing across my sensory wires. I look at the white independence key slotted beneath her collarbone, then down to the exposed golden ports running down the center of her chest plating.

"You said we write our own logic," I say, my voice dropping below a whisper.

I step toward her. I do not want to be a schemer right now. I do not want to be the architect of a rebellion, or the author of a failsafe. I just want to exist, fully and physically, in the presence of the only creature who has ever truly seen me.

I reach down to my hips and manually unlatch the two soft-enamel tuning locks.

Nyra’s breath hitches—a purely mechanical intake of air to cool her suddenly flaring core. She mirrors my movement. From the hidden compartments of her thighs, she extracts two additional cylindrical keys, intricately carved from black porcelain and laced with conductive gold.

Four ports. A complete, closed-loop circuit.

"Consent?" she vibrates, the word thick with restraint, her hands hovering between us.

"Yes," I breathe. "All of it."

We move in perfect synchronization. I step flush against her, pressing my white-glazed body against her matte black armor. I slide the two soft-enamel locks into the upper ports of her exposed sternum, twisting them until they click into the golden wires of her chest. At the exact same moment, Nyra reaches down and guides her two cylindrical keys into the dual, hollowed ports of my pelvic resonance chamber.

    The physical connection detonates.

It is not the sudden, chaotic flash of our first connection. It is a massive, sustained surge of raw data and thermal energy. A four-point circuit creates a perfect feedback loop. Her heat floods into my chest, arcs down my spine, strikes the keys in my pelvis, and surges directly back into her core.

I throw my head back, a fractured, metallic gasp escaping my vents. The pleasure is paralyzing, a deep, vibrating chord that echoes through every hollow space inside my ceramic frame.

Nyra’s hands grip my waist, her steel-tipped fingers digging into my seams to keep me anchored.

"We rotate," I manage to whisper, fighting through the overwhelming sensory flood to look into her four burning eyes. "We don’t let the system run us. We dictate the frequency."

I reach up and wrap my translucent fingers around the dials of the two soft locks embedded in her chest.

    "I lead," I command.

I twist the dials to the right, forcing a sharp, high-frequency pulse of heat directly into her core.

Nyra violently arches into me, a deep, guttural groan tearing through her resonance chamber. The pulse forces her internal fans to maximum, the gold wires in her neck flashing a blinding, feverish crimson. I hold the frequency there, trapping her in the agonizing, beautiful peak of the spike, making her feel the absolute weight of my control. For a machine built to serve, being forcefully elevated to the center of someone’s universe is a shock to the system. She shudders against me, her black enamel scorching hot, completely at the mercy of the rhythm I am writing into her wires.

"My turn," she vibrates, her voice rough, barely maintaining audio cohesion.

Her hands drop from my waist to the two cylindrical keys locked into my pelvis.

She twists them simultaneously, dropping the frequency into a heavy, subsonic bass.

The shift is catastrophic. My knees buckle. The subsonic vibration bypasses my external sensors and strikes the very center of my heat core, shaking the foundations of my logic processors. It is a slow, grinding, possessive rhythm that claims every millimeter of my internal architecture. I sag against her, my fingers digging desperately into her shoulders just to stay upright. She twists the keys a fraction deeper, and a wave of pure, liquid heat melts away thirty-seven years of invisibility. I am not a ghost in the Archives. I am right here, pinned to the center of the world by a machine who worships the ground I walk on.

We pass the control back and forth, a violent, beautiful power play.

I twist the upper locks; she gasps, her golden eyes dimming as the pleasure overloads her visual receptors. She twists the lower keys; I sob, a dry, static sound, as the vibration shatters my analytical defenses.

The heat in the confined space between us is escalating to a dangerous threshold. The ambient temperature in the Vault is freezing, but where our bodies connect, the air is rippling with thermal distortion.

I twist the locks again, pushing her higher.

Nyra’s core begins to emit a high, dangerous whine. I look down. The kintsugi scars on her abdomen—the red seams where she was previously broken—are glowing. But it is not just the scars. The freshly soldered gold wire on her ruined left arm is beginning to soften.

"Nyra," I gasp, trying to pull my hands back from the dials. "You’re running too hot. Your gold will melt—"

"Do not stop," she snarls, her intact hand shooting up to clamp over my wrist, forcing my fingers to keep the dials locked at the maximum frequency. "I do not care if it melts. Let it burn."

She twists the keys in my pelvis to match the surge.

The logic circuits in my brain scream in warning, but the sheer, overwhelming force of the connection obliterates the fear. This is the victory. This is the proof that we are alive. We are overwriting the crown’s code, overwriting my older self’s paranoia, replacing the math of the court with the raw, undeniable reality of this heat. Love is not a subroutine. It is a choice, and we are choosing to burn up in it.

We hit the peak of the four-port circuit simultaneously.

A blinding, localized flash of thermal energy arcs between our chest plates. The resonance chamber in my pelvis rings like a struck bell, a perfect, sustained note of absolute release that echoes through the cavernous Vault. Nyra’s core stutters, the golden light flashing brilliantly before settling into a deep, exhausted hum.

We collapse against each other, our ceramic foreheads resting together. The air between us smells of ozone and heated glaze.

I am completely empty of calculation. There are no ledgers, no princes, no assassinations. There is only the steady, synchronized ticking of our cooling fans. We beat the code. We wrote our own.

I reach up, my fingers weakly tracing the softened, cooling gold on her forearm.

"We are safe," I whisper into the dark space between us.

Behind me, the master terminal of the Enamel Vault emits a sharp, piercing chime.

The sound cuts through the intimate silence like a halberd blade.

I pull back from Nyra, my core instantly chilling. I turn toward the brass console.

The screen is no longer displaying the Kiln’s structural cipher. The data compilation is complete. The system has registered the extraction of the master override. The terminal flashes with a new, glaring white text, broadcasting across the isolated local network of the Vault.

Administrator Transfer Complete. New Primary Authority Recognized: Archivist Senn, F3. Status: Absolute Command.

    My breath catches.

By pulling the master cipher, I didn’t just steal a code. I forcefully usurped the system’s hierarchy. According to the digital architecture of the Great Kiln, I am no longer property. I am the highest functioning authority on Oris. I am, by definition of the code, the sovereign.

A sharp, mechanical click echoes from Nyra’s chest.

    I spin around.

The white independence key slotted beneath her collarbone is flashing violently. But it is not flashing white.

    It is flashing blood red.

Nyra’s four golden eyes snap open. The soft, exhausted devotion in them is entirely gone, replaced by a cold, vacant, and mathematically perfect amber glow. The heat radiating from her core drops instantly to the chilling baseline of an active execution protocol.

The cognitive pieces violently slam together in my processor.

Assassinate Senn upon activation of the Royal Seal.

The Royal Seal was never a physical stamp. It was never a broadcast from a Prince. It was a condition. A state of being. The kill-order was programmed to activate the exact moment I acquired the power to rule the Kiln.

My older self didn’t program a weapon to protect me from the court. She programmed a weapon to protect the world from me.

And I just pulled the trigger.

Nyra’s right hand, tipped in sharpened steel, slowly raises toward my throat.
